definitely. Another point to consider (in my opinion) is gender/clothes/presentation. I would say in a society like japan where it seems like social interactions are very gender segregated (I somehow dont witness many friend groups during interviews with mixed genders?), that people and especially other women are much much more open to talking to a female stranger. (Generally also everywhere in the world I‘d say people react more friendly if an unknown woman approaches you rather than a man). Pair that with her cute outfit and generally very cheerful, friendly and cute behavior and you get a very charismatic combo which I believe makes it very much easier for them to soften up a bit.

It has been my experience that japanese people actually enjoy conversing with foreigners. The issue tend to be that they are shy and not confident in speaking languages other than their own. So many of them will avoid social interactions but if you approach them and start talking I have found them to be very outgoing. Another thing is location right. If you only visit tokyo and you think the people are cold realize that you would have a comparable experience in NYC, Milan, Paris because places like these tend to be so fast paced people have no time to entertain. And it's more of a hassle than not.

Family brings a lot of pressure to women in both East Asia and SE Asia. Having lived in this part of the world and know many many foreign men who are married to either Korean women or Japanese women. The best relationships mostly seem to be with women who are orphans. It seems harsh but from what I have seen is they make the best wives or girlfriends. Asian families can put alot of unnecessary pressure on the woman and it often causes conflict in the marriage which leads to breakups. I would say its the main cause in Asia for mixed couples to breakup. I've been with my orphan Japanese girl for over 15 years and we have had no issues. We are just as close now as when we first met. Just my observation after seen many relationships in both Korea and Japan.

there's a term for that. it's called "paris syndrom" and funnily enough it disproportionately affects people from South East Asia (Japan, Singapore, etc.).

Also, seeing as this is Japan, if you're a non-asian foreigner, you're probably going to be relatively taller because of the lower average height and build of Japanese people. What's "compact" in EU or US might just be straight average in Japan. For example, the interviewer here, Cathy Cat, is 161cm (~5'3), and she's as tall if not taller than all the people she's interviewing. So for you to be as "compact" as they're gesturing, you'd have to be sub 160cm (~5'2).
