Why do Greeks spit on each other (usually making the sound "ftou") to ward off evil spirits? Does this action have a holy basis in the Greek Orthodox Church?

As somebody coming from a extremely stoic austere form of protestantism namly Dutch reformed this was really surprising. Who knew that spitting in Church could be polite.

As a Baptised & Confirmed Latin Catholic I am grateful to God that RU-vid suggested this video to me. I am fascinated. I always thought that this tradition was superstitious, maybe even Pagan, so prefer to use blessings & what us Latin Catholics call ‘sacramentals’ for protection from evil. Thank you for educating me!

IDOLATRY! If Christ is in you and and you are Christ’s no weapon can be formed against you. You’re are not warding off the devil by spitting. The devil is cunning and has people in his grip because they are a slave to sin and the devil.
