On my RU-vid site, you can watch more than 18,000 videos about Israel and the Holy Land
I would be happy if you could share the site with your other friends who are interested in the rich and sacred history of the place
A shtreimel (Yiddish: שטרײַמל‎, plural שטרײַמלעך shtraimlech) is a fur hat worn by many married Haredi Jewish men, particularly (although not exclusively) members of Hasidic Judaism, on Shabbat and Jewish holidays and other festive occasions. In Jerusalem, the shtreimel is also worn by Litvak Jews (non-Hasidim who belong to the original Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem, also known as Perushim). The shtreimel is generally worn only after marriage, except in some Yerushalmi communities, where boys wear it from the age of bar mitzvah.
There is much speculation surrounding the origin of the shtreimel. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, it is of Tatar origin. Different theories hold that it is of Tatar, Turkish or Russian origin, but it is not possible to establish a clear chronology. Some legends say that the initial reason for adopting the shtreimel was that the czar of the time decreed that the Jews must dress like the Gentiles.[citation needed] The shtreimel is comparable in construction to fur hats historically worn by Central European (Polish) and Eastern European Russian boyar nobility.[citation needed] According to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the shtreimel comes from the costume of Polish nobility, the Gentiles

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

Typically made of genuine fur from the tails of Canadian or Russian sable, stone marten, baum marten, or American gray fox, the shtreimel is the most costly piece of Hasidic clothing, costing anywhere from $1,000 to $6,000. It is possible to buy a shtreimel made of synthetic fur, which has become very common in Israel. Manufacturers in New York City, Montreal, B'nei Barak, and Jerusalem have been known to keep the secrets of their trade closely guarded.

question: Why the fur hat? quick answer: ''This outfit is the result of Christians who forced the Jews in Europe to wear something different. It started as a punishment, but the Jews saw the good side of the story. Now they knew who was a Jew and who was not. They decided to stay with this attire'' To me it's kinda like how some black people take the n-word and turn it as a good thing which i dont get because....if you want to take back the word to make it a powerful positive thing....why only other blacks can call you that? (**sigh**) Human logic doesn't make sense.

I never heard the reason gave in the vid but it makes sense. Jews were forced to wear a yellow star in WWII so people would know who is a Jew. We don't throw the symbol away because asshole used it fro some bad reason. PS Comparing Jews with negroes is ridiculous.

If I'm not mistaken, they were worn for the purpose of hiding the kippah. Not necessarily a punishment. I could be wrong though.

Pure punishment. Why to hide the kippa? They are very proud of it. In Muslim countries they didn't hid it.

Jews were being percucuted for the kippah, I was told they were using hats of nobility to hide the kippah. Eventually it just became custom.

@@zahishaked curiosity: are you yourself Jewish? If YES,could you explain why Jews persistently lived among European and Tsar Russia Christians despite almost regular pogroms? Couldn't they've moved to other, mostly non-Christian areas centuries ago? After all, Europe had horrific "hygiene" practice during the Middle Age. Cholera and plague as regular among non-Jews. No wonder. If we remember how clean 😣towns and people were.

All of these Hassidic traditions and dress customs go back 300 years at most and have been invented in Eastern Europe small villages and reflect aesthetics and culture of those provincial settlements. I think they can hardly be called Jewish traditions as they have nothing to do with historic traditions of Judaism going back Millennia. Most of the Hassidic tradition, hairstyles, dances, songs and dress are highly undignified, reflecting the low statute in societies and life of subjugation, submission and isolation, imho. Speaking as a Jew, I hope these Hassidic sects will disappear one day.

Everything you said makes a lot of sense. They aren’t biblical they are reflections of a particular ethnic group of Jews experience. They seem cultural rather than religious.

PS I have never heard that actually. The shtreimel is made of tails of mink because the Jewish people were only able to use the tails and not the body fur. It's all conjecture. As for Christians being cruel, yes they were and did way worse things to Jews than to force Jews to wear distinct clothing (makes them identifiable from Christians in Europe). Try the Inquisition as just one example of Christians cruelty. Happy Pesach :) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shtreimel A shtreimel (Yiddish: שטרײַמל shtrayml, plural: שטרײַמלעך shtraymlekh or שטרײַמלען shtraymlen) is a fur hat worn by some Ashkenazi Jewish men, mainly members of Hasidic Judaism, on Shabbat and Jewish holidays and other festive occasions.[1] In Jerusalem, the shtreimel is also worn by Litvak Jews (non-Hasidim who belong to the original Ashkenazi community of Jerusalem, also known as Perushim). The shtreimel is generally worn after marriage, although it may be worn by boys after bar-mitzvah age in some communities. A common view is that the shtreimel was adapted by Jews living in Europe as a warm winter hat,[4] possibly inspired by nobility;[5][2][6][7] the shtreimel is comparable in construction to fur hats historically worn by nobles or gentiles across Europe, Scandinavia and Russia.[7][8] According to the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the shtreimel could come from a period in the 17th century when Oriental costumes were considered fashionable by the nobility of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (Sarmatism).[8] One legend says that the initial reason for adopting the shtreimel was that the Jews were forced to wear an animal tail as a public humiliation.[4]
