This week Licensed Therapist, Kati Morton, LMFT explains why depression can cause us to feel empty inside, and like we are a burden to everyone around us. She also digs into why COCSA can feel so complicated to process because they were kids too, and it can feel wrong to blame them for the abuse. Kati then explains a therapist's perspective around bridging up new information in each therapy session and feeling like we are just doing it for attention. She also discusses a professional crying in session and that our reaction to it is the most important piece of information. This and so much more this week!! All that and much more in this week’s episode of Ask Kati Anything!

Ask Kati Anything ep. 167 | Your mental health podcast, with Kati Morton, LMFT
Audience questions:
1. I've experienced emotional neglect and physical abuse from my parents and family members. I struggle with depression and anxiety right now. Even when I feel quite alright I feel emptiness inside...
2. I was sexually abused by my brother who is 5 years older than me from ages 5-9. I originally went to therapy in an attempt to heal from this trauma but I've pretty much just avoided the subject entirely and focused on...
3. What do you, as a therapist, think if a patient is bringing up completely new information? As a patient/client, I feel very uncomfortable after a therapy session in which I said (again!) new things...
4. My question is about providers crying in session. I was having a bit of a crisis last week, and while explaining the situation & my feelings about it to my dietitian, she started crying. At first, I was so surprised by it that I thought she was...
5. You have talked about how important boundaries are in therapy especially with clients with BPD. Does this mean that your boundaries shift when it comes to clients with BPD? Also, you have mentioned that when a client asks for a hug...
6. Can you tell more about journaling? How do you use it? How do you recommend your clients to use it? It's helpful to me a lot when I feel anxious, getting rid of all thoughts helps. But when it comes to processing different thoughts, beliefs or feelings I feel like I intellectualize...
7. As a child I was totally spoiled and my parents didn't seem to trust in my capabilities to cope with age-appropriate things on my own, due to me having been born way too early. I was emotionally nurtured, maybe even too much...
8. Recently I've been hearing a lot about AI, Chat gpt and all that. I'm curious to hear your take on this subject. Personally I do use chat GPT sometimes, but I don't see it as a therapist or a replacement for one. To me it's more like a journal that talks back...

I was telling a part of my story to a friend. When she burst into tears. I was aghast. I could never want to cause pain. I apologized. Yes I am working on my own CPSTD hyper-responsibility issues. Then I realized that we have no right to even try to control what others get to feel. We should not restrict their right to have genuine emotion about something they also may have also experienced BE. Share. Cry. Together. Help each other find a path to healing.

Katie I don't particularly think that forgiveness is absolutely required to heal. Can you talk more about this topic?
@JanelleBearden246
@JanelleBearden246 Год назад
I think forgiveness is key to letting go of what the other person did, which is how you’ll be able move on and heal eventually. Or if what was the other person did, is so unable to be understood I think that you have to learn to accept what happened while wanting to move on and change.

The forgiveness needed I've found. Is self forgiveness. Forgive yourself for doing what you had to do to survive. Forgive yourself for thinking it was your fault. You don't have to forgive your abuser. You can forgive yourself for not knowing it wasn't your fault.

What do you do when these overprotective parents victimize themselves and don't want to get out of that role? Bc I feel like every time I try to do something on my own or for myself, they make me feel guilty for not needing them.... Like I have to be that dependent child of theirs forever

I identify with question 7….. I have a physical disability and my mom had a mental illness. Both of my parents were EXTREMELY helicopter-ish even as me as an adult BUT at the same time “ hey Jenna now that you’re an adult you need to lean to do xyz”. EXTREMELY confusing!

I wasn't allowed to talk about what was going on I was told actions speak louder than words and was trying to get help for what I was suffering with the abuse I was so alone and being manipulated the person who abused me was 11years older and he got younger siblings but they were still older than me to do things as well with me I was so traumatized being so young and stupid and I can't help thinking that I'm still being manipulated as an adult .I suffered a miscarriage at age 13 years

Q 8: Ai. I did use a mental health app that used Ai as the therapist. It was great when I really needed to speak to my therapist and I was in-between sessions and couldn't afford to set up one. However, they changed the systems and it no longer was as good as before.

Hi Kati, do you have recommendations for a secular version of The Artist's Way? I want to start journaling more and you've talked about it a lot, but when I looked it up it looks like it has religious undertones which is not therapeutic for me. Any suggestions very welcome!

I really appreciate how you help people by sharing your knowledge. I'm also wondering, have you ever considered that the Catholic faith might be the true one? If you do one day, there are some RU-vid channels such as Breaking in The Habit, Thomistic Institute, Ascension Presents, Catholic Answers which explain it. It's better to know the way of salvation. I believe heaven and hell exist, and it's up to us if we want to accept God's Mercy or not. That's why it's very important to become a part of the Church.

A psychiatrist is the last person who you can do inner child work with. They are very cold and, as a group, don't know their Oedipus complex from their male-female conflict issues. What I am trying to say is that they are all in theory when you have to make your internal child find a chance to find an adult again and start over with the attachment scerenio. Don't worry. It can be done with pshcholtias
