This may not be a popular comment, but as a child I was raised Presbyterian Christian, which many people wouldn’t consider a cult, but I do because as a small child they taught me about the Rapture in which all believers get sent to heaven and everyone else will get left behind and experience horrible things. I was so terrified of this for a large part of my life and it wasn’t until I was in my late 20’s that I broke free and it’s taken a lot of undoing from this indoctrination. I also was taken to an anti abortion rally. I had made a sign and everything and was only 7 years old. I stood on a street corner and people were yelling horrible things out their car windows at us. This was a very negative experience and I didn’t understand it. My best friend was also there and said it affected her very negatively also. It’s a fine line between religion and cult.
This is officially one of my favorite podcasts that Kirk has released. Trauma bonding was very well delineated, and was laid out in such a way that it profoundly related to cases of domestic violence.
Oh, thank you for mentioning Jehovah's Witnesses. Looking back, after decades out as a normal person, it is a cult. It makes me sad to realize. So much it is authoritarian, but it more cultural than dictated by any scriptural doctrine or lack thereof. They could hold the same key core beliefs and not control so much. I had to fight to graduate high school. They forced me to quit my candy striping job. My father was going to remove me from high school. I lined up a legal team, but I was terrified. Stuck the ACLU's phone number in my bra. What question I have is this a natural development or do the leaders do it purposively?
Could you make an episode on ableism (the discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities) and mentalism (a form of discrimination and oppression against a mental trait or condition a person has, or is judged to have) ? I have been diagnosed wih asperger syndrom and I would find it extremly interesting to have your view on the topic !
Did they make a podcast on disability and ableism? We are only temporarily able if we are able. I became very interested when I became disabled. The legislation and signs for wheelchair users made me think so much had improved. Hah. Call me naive! One aspect that my managing partner and I had at a disability rights law firm was the sexuality part. I cheered wheelchairs who proudly mentioned their battles to date and be viewed as sexual by their parents and society. They even use their own names in an anthology I read.
Based on the way she described secure attachment, it seems as though a parent is necessary to soothe stress. If that is the case, then scolding a kid must cause maladaptive attachment. How do you manipulate your kids behavior so they dont say... steal from other kids or even as simple as looking both ways to cross the street without negative reinforcement when they dont follow? Also, it was very interesting to think about. Catholicism could be cultish in the way it controls sex. No sex till marriage, no sex for the priests. The sex based rules appears to be controlled by a sense of culture cause even the leaders have to abide by the doctrine that limits them. Hmmmm
No sex before marriage it is advised in many Christian Church like Anglican Church, Baptists and so on. But in most European countries with strong Catholic background, people do not follow Catholic Church rules and advices. You can check the birth rates and it is clear that people in Spain, Italy, Portugal... do not follow the traditional Catholic pattern.
I don't know if you put in neurolinguistic programming as a tag for this or if RU-vid's Algorithm just knows to show me cult stuff when I type in neurolingustic programming
