Little bit of a different kind of video today, but I had some thoughts about Star Wars, the new Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney Plus show, and the evolution of toxic movie and fandom culture over time, and so I tried to put it all together in a video. Little all over the place, sorry about that, but hope you enjoy!

Same. The new shows are amazing. These people don't even try to watch or understand the theme or the story. They just conditioned themselves to hate it and that's what they're trying to do. They sit there to find a scene they don't like ''hurr this stormtrooper took 1 step too much'' ''hurr plott'' because they can't get themselves to allow these new shows to have the benefit of the doubt of being fiction like they do with the OT. If you sit and try to find something to hate, either it be some narrative decision to help the protagonists or a small logical mistake then you will find issues with every movie, show, cartoon whatever out there. If the OT came out today they would shit on it more than the current ones due to all of its problems. Remember all the flack Obi Wan got because the lightsaber bounced off something? It did so in the OT too. The hyprocrisy.

Yeah, they're whiney bitches. I did not like Episodes 8 and 9 from the main saga, but I just kinda dealt with it in my head canon and moved on to other star wars movies and shows that I like, and I've liked more than I've disliked so far. They over exaggerate and everything is a "world ending problem." They're afraid of lore and canon growing and so things are immediately a "loophole" or "breaks canon" but you really just find out these fans are terribly uncreative and unimaginative and blame the writers because they can't perceive how it works or aren't willing to accept that it does.

Nothing that you’re saying is true tho. Most Star war fans hate the new stuff because it’s badly written. Just like the prequels are trash. Literally Star Wars is one of the worst written franchises ever. Same thing goes for modern Star Trek. Most Star Trek fans hate the new Star Trek stuff because it’s full of bad writing.
@CometStar100
@CometStar100 2 года назад
@@damiantirado9616 It's not though. The only things that are really bad on a writing level is the Rise of Skywalker and Book of Boba Fett in the current run of Disney Star Wars. The rest of Disney Star Wars don't have severe writing problems to the point where they would be considered bad but there is a argument to be made that they break canon and disrespect George Lucas which I disagree with the breaking of canon part of that. It could be disrespecting George Lucas but that doesn't bother me that much cause all I am looking for is a good story not if it pleases the creator. If Lucas wanted to continue Star Wars then he should of kept the franchise. The biggest reasonings from what I saw from videos for why Disney of Star Wars sucks is because it goes against canon and George which someone like Star Wars Theory has made a good amount of videos talking about it.
@damiantirado9616
@damiantirado9616 2 года назад
@@CometStar100 I don’t care about George Lucas he ruined Star Wars along time ago with the prequels. Disney Star Wars sucks too they do have bad writing. The force awakens isn’t a good film kid. It’s a bland copy of a new Hope, the only character that has character development is Finn. Apart from that all the characters in that movie are bland and dull. The last Jedi has tons of terrible writing, same thing goes for Rouge One and Solo a Star Wars story which is incredibly stupid nostalgia bait movie. You only enjoy the new stuff because of nostalgia. Kenobi is very badly written too. The only thing that is good is the Mandalorian season one. But the Mandalorian season one isn’t great it’s okay at best. 7/10 type of show. The problem is Hollywood this days makes crap tv shows and movies that you people are so used to terrible and dull writing, so when Hollywood uses nostalgia bait you enjoy it, or when Hollywood makes the minimum effort at doing something interesting like the Mandalorian you think it’s a master when in reality it’s just average and amateur filmmaking. In summary your expectations are so low due to trash filmmaking that an okay/average movie or tv show with nostalgia makes you feel like it’s a masterpiece cause it’s the best you’ve seen compared to the rest of the crap they have. Edit: if you’re a true film fan and watch movies made in the past analyze them and watch movies this days you would know Hollywood makes pure trash this days. Especially Star Wars. I recommend you to watch Mr. Plinkett Star Wars reviews, you will learn a lot about filmmaking by watching those videos, probably the best Star Wars reviewer ever. Most RU-vidrs review Star Wars by using their nostalgia “hey look Han Solo showed up and I like him, movie is a 8/10” that’s not how you review a film. But most people only care about nostalgia this days so Hollywood doesn’t make anything better.

Yes, but, you know why that is? I think the answer is easy enough to see. Lucas had a great vision in the beginning, which after the first two films started to change. Then he sold it all to Disney who usually aren't making SW shows with any of Lucas' vibe. So we've ended up with a range of different 'vibes' which different people have really, really fallen for. Then some portion of the fan base is bound to end up unhappy when the next movie or series to come out doesn't give them more of what they want. Compare this to the Harry Potter series of novels (just the first lot). You had one writer, with a consistent vision and story she wanted to tell from start to finish. Because the vision was always consistent, the fan base never got split (to any degree like the SW fan base). In other words, I don't think the fans are especially bad - I just think they've each fallen in love with different phases of this fictional universe, and they can't get their fix anymore because Lucas didn't have the ideas or motivation to keep going in the same vein as he started.

Why do Star wars fans hate everything? The real simple reasons are these: 1. Woke politics: People are sick and tired of woke politics/agendas in their star war films. They want characters who are genuine which aren't based on their races or sexualities. It's not woke to cast a black woman, it's woke to use her as a stereotypical angry black woman and then make her the centerpiece of your show instead of the main character. People aren't there to see that woman, they are there to see the main character. People wanted to see Obiwan and Anakin scenes and interactions, that woman kept getting in the way of that. Obviously everyone hated her existence because of that and the massive amount of plot armor given to her. This is what all these diversity loons do not understand. As well as the whole "girls get it done" trope. 2. Bad writing which makes no sense. I don't think I need to explain this one. 3. The bashing of old characters. I don't think I need to explain this one either.

What's wrong with using a video of someone who took their time to analyze the show and construct their thoughts as a way to explain yourself? Have you thought that, perhaps, the RU-vidr was making a good point and your friend simply agreed with him? Your friend's opinion is that he didn't like it, and to back it up he wanted to use someone who he thought did a better job at explaining it. "Where the points made good?" is really the only thing you should care about, not where the points come from.

As true today as it was two years ago, and I suspect will be true in the future. Thanks for the insight. I think people pay waaaay too much attention to pre-release press and obsess over every little detail that leaks and spin narratives and become obsessed with the drama before ever seeing the product. And while the products do have flaws, as do all human works, the backlash (for some people) has become as much a part of the fandom as the thing itself. And the older fans don't seem to realize that new fans are growing up and replacing them every day, and Star Wars really is supposed to be for the youth. That's why it pays to stay young at heart and enjoy it as it comes, rather than trying to impose your will on it. Wow, it really is a case of life imitating art.

I find people were accepting of Force Awakens at first because while being too similar to the originals in beats, it had some possibilities for the future movies. Then the next movies came, and didn't do anything good with what it set up, and became worse after the fact. The same with the prequels, they became better over time, in part due to how poorly the new movies were received and how much additional content that came in and added to them, via the Clone Wars and such. Myself, although the majority of the new media from Disney has not been good to me, I also find that Andor is the single best Star Wars media that has come out, and Rogue One I found to be overall excellent.

This was a very nice video and I like how you discussed this topic (rambling included). I have mixed feelings on it, because what is considered "toxic negativity" can be subjective, and I do get some of the fan frustrations. Your comparison is the MCU--how would you like it if, after Age of Ultron, every single MCU movie that was released was made with bad storytelling, weak CGI, ignored previous films and was clearly made without considering the fans? The lead writer of Kenobi just admitted in an article that he didn't know whether or not Kenobi knew Anakin's Sith name, Vader. He had to ask another staff member at Lucasfilm film, Pablo Hidalgo. The only way you CANNOT know this information, is if you didn't bother watching Revenge of the Sith before working on the script for a series with a character from said movie, set closely in the timeline to said movie. It's said multiple times in the movie to Kenobi. I try to take it in stride--it's fiction and I can decide what's "canon." But it does feel blatantly disrespectful and one of the reasons fans are so harsh is because Disney has lost consumer trust.

Those rose-coloured glasses or rather, our impartial memory, highlight the joyful moments of our past while suppressing the sad or uncomfortable ones. This causes us to overlook the negative aspects of the context in which the memory took place. Then memory then becomes a splice of unattainable perfection that you will never be able to return to, which causes you great pain and sorrow-and therein lies the fallacy: nothing was ever perfect. Or perhaps it was perfect, in the sense that everything is perfect, but not in the way you remember it; free of any pain and negativity. And sometimes, they join forces with toxic, resentful or emotionally immature people and then its suddenly "it okay to harass and dox others" because you're defending your childhood from those who want to destroy it. Nostalgia originally meant ‘homesick’. And that's why there so angry because experience of Childhood again. To experienced at original shock and wondering and awe first watch STAR WARS. And so they can only feel disappointment when reality sets in and possible just can't come true.

I honestly think all the films, 1-9, spinoffs, and series are pretty good overall. Nothing exactly groundbreaking but nothing overly bad either. Average as a franchise, solid B- overall. Honestly I find the fandom menace so much more interesting(and groups that just want to hate on pop media stuff in general) It just seems so interesting to me on how so many people can expend so much energy on something that brings them such dissatisfaction. It astonishes me how much politics tends to shape it too, particularly identity politics. It's at the point I feel like people have more riding on disliking a Star Wars project rather then let themselves enjoy what they can. That's where I think grifters come in. I loved The Last Jedi (and still do), but so many people hated it causing Disney to panic, scrapping all there plans for a logical sequel and replacing it with a mess of a movie that will 'please' all the angry fans. I always thought that the sequel trilogy would be the same as the prequels in the sense that they were hated at first, but grew on people after some time, but now they ruined it. They tried to please fans, but as a filmmaker this is something you should NEVER do, in the first place you should always make the movie you want to make/ that you think will be good. Fans will never be satisfied because there expectations are just to high, but give them time and they will appreciate it afterwards. But now, Disney and J.J. Abrams have made a trilogy without a proper, thought out story. I think fans would still appreciate a propper sequel to TLJ more then a weak course correction that just shuves fan service down your throte all the time in the hope that people would like it. I know that it's just a movie, but it just makes me so sad, to see creative people get scared like that and make a movie that they know is not the one they want to make, but they're just so frightened of there own fanbase that they do it anyway. They should have just made the movie they wanted to make, that way the fans would probably hated it when it came out, but over time, it'll grow on them. I hope Disney and J.J. Abrams learn from this

And because Disney wanted to release these movies in december, they had to be rushed out. But I still think that Rian Johnson did a good job (not perfect) with The Last Jedi. There is a verry good video on RU-vid, I think it's called 'The Anti-Trilogy' that explains verry well how every movie tried to 'fix' the last one. And it also explains how The Last Jedi is the movie that George Lucas would have made, because it turns everything on it's head. With the prequels, George made Darth Vader, the most feared villain in Sci-fi, a horny teenager and turned Yoda, the wise and calm mentor into a cgi frog on steroids. At first fans hated it, but over time they grew to love George's dessisions. And what did Rian Johnson do...? He turned Luke, the forgiving, hopefull hero into a sad, defeated old man. What's the difference?? Why can't people, over time realise that this actually was a great way to continue the story?? Yes. These movies needed more time and needed to be planned out from the beginning. Can't even scroll through the comments here, on this video, without feeling like people are blowing their tops... I have (literally) become too old for this childish bullshit, and have since long ago started to cherry pick both what I watch and even what I save in my collection - even though gaps in a series bothers me to no end. I didn't like the prequels, so after having seen all three in theatre and then once again on dvd later on (to make sure that I wasn't just in a bad mood when I thought they were awful), I decided I didn't need to see them again. I have also only ever seen the Special Edition versions of the OT once, and that was like a punch in the face. So between 1997 and 2020 (when I finally managed to get hold of Blu-Ray versions of the DEspecialized Editions) I didn't watch the OT even once! Btw, this cherry picking reaches into more areas than just Star Wars. For instance I own Mission Impossible 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, but not 2. I love movies, and I have for almost 40 years now, but all in all, I'm a happier person when I'm not all up in arms about them, and simply enjoy or not enjoy them for what they are, be it simple entertainment or stunning works of art.

They hate the Corporisation of star wars by Disney which is evident by Kenobi and schlock like Book of Boba Fett. Toxic Positivity is still an unaware example of toxicity in the fanbase making both sides more extreme. People don't like Disney as a whole compared to your strawman of 'people not liking the new thing'. It's literally a real world example of what the OT was a satire of the evils of institutional control. You don't get to just dismiss it all as 'fantasy movies' when you kick out the creator from the conversation of the series.

Did you see all the Star Wars toys that existed before the Disney buyout? Have you forgotten the corporate tie-ins that Phantom Menace had (I still remember a pizza place giving a cup with a Jar Jar Binks top)? Star Wars was coorporitized *long* before Disney got their white gloved hands on it. I'm not saying there aren't legitimate reasons to hate Disney, but corporitizing Star Wars isn't one of them. And what do you mean "kick out the creator from the conversation of the series"? George Lucas *sold* the series. @@adamdavis1648 The films are being corporitized, not the brand as a whole. Merchandise for star wars has always existed even in the IOUs that came out months after Star Wars 1977 because they knew toys wouldn't be ready in time. Merchandising has always existed, I'm referring to the fact even though Star Wars has always had a hold on merchandise section... it was never owned by conglomerate to market and sell. Also, i'm referring to the corporatisation of content made by Disney to pass off as entertainment. It's the glorified factory filmmaking and lack of care in the brand that gets to me. It was primarily owned by George Lucas. He owned the merchandising rights, he would lease the film rights to studio producers to get the prequels made and he did it under his finance. George Lucas selling the series doesn't alter history and make him any less the creator of the brand. In many cases Disney has constantly tried to bring him up and misquote him as a means to fit him under their narrative. If you read Bob Iger's book you'll know that George was only willing to sell the brand if he was promised the Pixar Treatment which would imply that he would still be making SW content just under the wing of Disney. Since that was something he was screwed on in the contract the buyout wasn't exactly genuine or on terms of the agreement since Iger simply rushed him into signing without specifying the terms of which he would be signing. Also, the '' Lucas sold the rights and so doesn't get to have any say as creator'' is disingenuous and short sighted. Usually just a lazy talking point by haters. It really just screams that you don't like George Lucas. He still has his say on what he disagrees with and is legally still considered the creator since he has to be legally credited on every Disney Star Wars piece of content. Your last bit is a complete strawman, buddy. Toxic Positivity is the case of being too positive on something that you choose to shun any ounce of negative criticism to a piece of content (which only displays fragility) which is equally extreme to your caricature of a said hater. Kathleen Kennedy is leading Lucasfilm as a whole and if her decisions cost her money, antagonise the fanbase and create friction with staff and viewer then she in every way should be criticised as leaders and corporate leaders should be. Are we forgetting Margaret Thatcher exists? We have every right to disagree on anything but to label it toxic because you feel bored by it means nothing since its human behaviour and sprouts the same way across politics, office, government and work. I just didn't understand how you could say he was "kicked out from the conversation of the series" because a sale sounds more like willingly walking out than being kicked out. If Iger tricked him into selling through false promises, then I stand corrected. What you describe as my "caricature" of haters is actually just a factual description of the toxic negativity that I've seen a lot of. I have yet to see much of the toxic positivity you speak of. You don't have to be miserable to criticize bad writing...

@@Clipzilla42 But the people who make videos about how evil Kathleen Kennedy is and how Star Wars is "ruined by SJWs" and how Lucasfilm must hate the fans......those people seem miserable and yet smug at the same time. It's not the fact that they're criticizing the writing, it's the fact that they seem to be bitterly spitting out criticism of both the writing and the writers while frothing at the mouth with crazed rage. They'd probably fail to the dark side pretty easily if they were force users.

@@adamdavis1648 Lol true, but there is a different and more insightful subset of SW critics as a whole; the people I’m thinking of make critiques that will stand the test of time. Although they might express frustration at the writers for their decisions, that’s as far as they go, aside from maybe a joke at their expense. There are RU-vidrs like Jay Exci and MauLer who make humorous critiques as well as remaining objective about the writing itself, and how it does or doesn’t function.

I agree with you and this has been a problem for a long time. We as fans have to start stepping up and your video is a great example of that! We can also see a bigger problem with the algorithms of social media and how our anger (Palpatine voice) gets rewarded. Who wants to be on the Dark side anyway!? But yes, Star Wars fans are some of the most toxic and they need to be addressed.

This doesn't apply to just star wars, but any time you try to defend a movie or show you like there's always that one guy who chimes in and goes "Oh you can like the movie, but you can't say it's good because oBJeCtivELy..." and it's like, fuck off.

Good analysis about Star Wars. I agree with you about you gravitate to what you grew up with. 20 years from now you’ll hear more sequel trilogy defenders hating on future Star Wars stuff.
