The only criticism I have is with the statements followed or preceded by the "Sun moves." More should be explained as to why the Sun appears to be in Gemini or the other constellations.

People seem to be jumping to conclusions about the purpose of this video . . . the idea was to show why the stars seem to change position day on day, rather than simply explaining why stars appear to move across the sky at any instant. Also, 'everything's moving' is a pretty shallow answer that doesn't really demonstrate any understanding of how the relative positioning works. I don't see how this is 'dumbing down' anything either, as there's not much more to it than that.

Had a question of why we see the same stars every night? Are they rotating with us? Answer: no, the universe is so vast that the light from stars seem stationary, and they are also moving (further or closer) but not rotating with us. With the earth's rotation and change in tilt, the stars appear in different places but light takes so long to travel you'll see the same stars. Trust me, this was an 1-2 hr conversation where I'm essentially repeating myself with someone that can't grasps their mind around that the universe is seemingly infinite and continuesly expanding... idk what do yall think? Note: forgive me if this is written too simple, just trying to a point across of the conversation and receive some feedback. Thanks

I think the stars we can see with the naked eye aren't that far, googling "farthest star that can be seen with the naked eye" gives a few different answers but they all lie within less than 20k light years only, I believe the stars we can see with our eyes are all in our galactic neighborhood (not including galaxies like Andromeda), they orbit with us around the galactic core. That being said, you're right, space is so damn big that despite those stars being in our "neighborhood" to actually see the night sky change we need to live and record them for several thousands of years. Humanity's recorded history only started about 5 thousands years ago, we're just too short lived, and things happen slow in this universe relative to us short lived creatures. An article I found mentions that the stars Arcturus, Sirius, and Aldebaran have been found to have changed location by half a degree in the sky since ancient Greek times. That's how slow the change is, other stars in their constellation haven't moved even that much yet. The sun orbits the galactic core fully every about 230 million years, together with its neighboring stars, but they won't stay exactly the same, so the night sky as we know it with all of constellations will change over thousands and millions of years to come.. I sometimes wish I could be there to witness it all, a slow paced movie for sure.

So, You are telling in this video that the sky is concave and Polaris is at front of our face in UK? I thought that Polaris is exactly at the top of the north pole and the sky is flat but to each of us the perspective looks like a dome around us. Right? If not, them you need a flat umbrella and move the head of your doll to the top and place your camera under the doll facing up to see correctly. That is why some many people are stupid because they do not question people like you.

@576ito1080p your old man rant made me chuckle. Sure, the young kids are stupid, but with age and experience we are achieving more than the previous generation. More of us are volunteering, donating to charities and fund raising more so than our parents ever did. We also brought forward ethical living, environmental consciousness, and let me say great new music. I love everything that was before us, but sir, times are changing and we are the future. Don't worry it's in safe hands.

So the Earth spins at 1000mph while circling the sun which is moving at 500,000 miles through the milky way and the milky way expanding even faster, why does the north star never move, 24 hours a day and century after century and the stars all revolve around it exactly the same unless we are in an enclosed, fixed system where we are stationary and they spin above us ( stars,sun,moon ) ? Alike to what all religious bibles use to teach across the face of this Earth.

There are trillions of stars in our galaxy, the north star happens to currently align (not perfectly because it does wander a bit) with earth's axis during the very short time that man has been observing it which is very short when you consider earth is 4.5 billion years old... The amazing thing is that this star is called the north star and it aligns with our north pole, what a coincidence... lol
@zephilandevol
@zephilandevol 2 года назад
The milky way isn’t expanding and the stars near the sun are moving with the sun along the milky way. It’s like cars in traffic, the car in front of you doesn’t look like it’s moving. And the north star (polaris) wasn’t always the north star, it wasn’t during biblical times (~0AD)

@AriaHarmony
@AriaHarmony Год назад
The north star wasn't always Polaris, it was different in ancient Egypt for example, and will once again be a different star thousands of years from now. This is because Earth's tilt itself is changing, it's predicted to rotate slowly completing a full circle every 25k years iirc (correct me on the number if I'm remembering wrong), so the north star will always keep changing, it just takes time and we haven't been keeping records for long. That being said, earth/sun/galaxy movement is not what's causing that north star change, like I said it's the slowly changing tilt of the Earth. The change of the position of the stars themselves relative to Earth will take a long loooooong time to be something we humans can perceive, on the order of 100k to millions of years, space is big. Even at 500,000 miles an hour, space is just that big, and events regarding stars and galaxies just take a very long time to happen. Long for us anyway, our recorded history is only 5k years old, the stars barely moved relative to each other and the the galactic core since then, despite moving at such incredible speeds, space is just so damn big. I'd say it's damn near incomprehensible to our human brains, just try to truly comprehend the distances in the solar system alone, it's mind boggling, stuff like "you can fit 30 Earths in the distance between the Earth and the moon", what?? It doesn't seem that far! But it is. And the distances between the planets is another story entirely. Another example is the prediction that when the milky way collides with Andromeda, most starts will not crash into each other, there's just so much space in between them normally that most of them will miss each other. Oh and that collision will last a loooooooooong time, it's not some car crash it's a galaxy crash! These behemoths like to take their time with everything, I think the whole event will take a billion years from start to almost settled but I might be off by some millions of years from recent estimates, I might even be off by the total time anything human-like has walked the Earth, 60ish million years, yeah, on this scale our entire existence can be folded into an error margin. I truly don't think most humans comprehend this. And sometimes I wonder if the universe couldn't even comprehend our tiny short existence either.

But the earth spins at 1000 miles per hour… the stars would be constantly moving around us at this incredibly fast rate. There would be a lot more rotations in one day!!! How does this make sense? The earth spins about 1000 miles per hour and people don’t notice it? I don’t think they are telling the truth about the place we live.

Have you ever been in a plane? You feel the force of gravity as the plain accelerate but once it reaches the desired speed there is not such feeling of gravity force. Same happens with earth speed, we don't feel it because we're rotating at the same speed.
@Lobster_Lars
@Lobster_Lars Год назад
Do you not understand? The earth rotates once per day. The surface speed doesn't change that. the sky rotate once per day. Miles per hour has nothing to do with it

Better to say "appear to move". Could then introduce the notion of relative motion. At least he didn't say "God just wants it that way". Even the dumbed down British population deserve some simple science, so good on him for making it accessible. When you compare this guy to Patrick Moore, you see how much education standards in general and TV has deteriorated. Also, I suspect that due to light pollution many people don't get the priviledge of seeing stars, and have wonder sparked in that way
