35% of the world drives on the left but why? Why don't we all just drive on the same side of the road? Come for a drive with Drew Stearne and Henry Catchpole to find out.

When I was in a taxi between Varanasi, India and the local airport, the driver would drive down the middle on the road. He pulled to the left only when another car approached. I asked him why he did that. He responded 'So the other driver can see me coming'. Yes, India has a horrendous road toll any way you care to measure it (per capita, per km traveled, per 100k cars, etc).

It's very, very simple: most people are right-handed, therefore it makes the most sense to have the shifter and all of the buttons you primarily press accessible by the right hand, which means the driver would need to sit on the left.
@jonathanord
@jonathanord 5 месяцев назад
There's a counter argument to that being the majority of people are right-handed, so it would make sense that your primary steering hand would be your strongest and hence right hand. You can change gears and use everything in the console with your non-primary hand whilst ensuring that you have better control of the steering and hence the movement of the car. Thus, you would need to sit on the right of the car.

@RandomGameplayVideos
@RandomGameplayVideos 6 лет назад
There already is. You wear the watch on the hand opposite of your "main" hand. So if you're a lefty, wear it on your right hand. /Mainly because if you're right-handed for example, you are going to use that right hand for almost everything in your life. So the watch might become uncomfortable and there's a bigger risque to damage it or get stuck to something.

Jay Dee you are supposed to wear your watch behind the wrist protruding bone so the dial won't interfere with the movement of your hand
@RandomGameplayVideos

But then, how do you write? I'm right handed and if I try to write something (in a book, using a pen, not on the keyboard) I simply can't because my hand is sort of resting on the watch band instead of the paper as I'm used to. Anyway, probably getting used to it like you said.
@TheDonCucaracho

Daniel 1992 I've always written with my hand bent in a very left-handed way, so I guess I was already writting in an uncomfortable position even before using a watch. Lol idk

And why should we when the majority of people are right handed?
@zzzzz8421
@zzzzz8421 3 года назад
@@notthefather3919 did you mean: “why shouldn’t we?” Well because it takes most people’s dominant hand away from the wheel. Meaning your ‘weaker’ hand is controlling where your 1 ton beast is going! Your dominant hand does signalling and steering and your left does everything else
@Figureight
@Figureight 6 лет назад
and just like how in Medieval times travelled on the left so that our dominant hand was able to protect / fight (like in jousting), I think RHD cars make more sense. My dominant hand is always on the wheel. That to me makes much more sense.

Excellently explained. The first Ferrari fitted with a steering wheel on the left side (all Italian racing cars were RHD until early 1950's) was given as a gift to Henry Ford by Enzo himself. It was a dark green 1952 Ferrari 212 Barchetta. It is in the Peterson Automotive museum.

Excellently explained, except that it's completely wrong. Riding your horse on the left goes back to jousting days.
@Britishshooter
@Britishshooter 6 лет назад
Alan F Brookes, you really did not think that one through did you? Archaeological evidence shows people all over the world walked and rode on the left for thousands of years before jousting was invented in around the 11th Century. The depth of hoof marks from horses leaving laden from the likes of mines compared to those entering the mines unladen is just one clear proof that mankind always originally used the left hand side for the reasons that are, as I stated, clearly explained in the above video. If you watch men approaching each other on a pavement in over 90 per cent of cases if room allows they will pass each other right shoulder to right shoulder, i.e on the left. Extensive Human behaviour studies have shown this.

I'm from the US and I must say that driving on the left makes more sense. When you are sitting on the right, shifting is done on the left side of your body (including the clutch), and accelerating/decelerating are done on the right. This also allows right-handed people to keep their right hand on the wheel while shifting.
@johncanalese588
@johncanalese588 6 лет назад
Also having the RHD position allows most manufacturers to conveniently install a Foot Rest for your left foot which operates the clutch because it is in the center of the vehicle where there is more space for it. On LHD cars it's against the outer kick-panel which is more restrictive.
@joshxkerrigan
@joshxkerrigan 6 лет назад
In America, when vehicles started filling roads, there was a common decision amongst American car manufacturers that they would build LHD vehicles, built that way so passengers can exit onto a curb on the right. Also, in 1960, Hubel and Wiesel invented ocular dominance columns, and found that that 70-90% of the world population is right eye dominant; therefore, when oncoming traffic lights flash in your left eye, your right (& likely dominant) eye can stay focused on the road ahead.
@tweeny55
@tweeny55 6 лет назад
Our passengers just exit on the left,which is curbside to us same as the right is curbside to you,no difference at all,also we tend to put traffic lights both sides of the road here,did Hubel and Wiesel not think of that lol.A classic case this of no right or wrong answer...simply different.

I took a bus tour of Scotland a few years ago. Our driver/guide told us the British were going switch driving sides but do it in stages. On First of April buses and lorries (trucks) would switch, and then on the fifteenth cars and motorcycles. During WWII British and Commonwealth vehicles has a "pass" sign on the front of the vehicle to indicate which side to pass on. depending on which country you are in.

Right brain works the left hand, powered by dopamine, majors in intuition, overview and spatial awareness and planning, most people who can solve the Rubik's cube without instructions are lefties (as they can perceive the whole), left brain works the right hand, powered by seratonin, majors in step-by-step process learning ie first you do this, then you do that, a, b, c, d, 1, 2, 3, 4 etc, will nearly always require instruction before it can tackle the Rubik's cube but once learned can usually do it faster.

Countries that drive on the left have better safety records, Why?, Because most humans are right side dominant, So driving on the left means your vision of oncoming traffic and the road is slightly to your right. Most people shot with a gun or rifle on their right side,(vision more to your right again) by putting the gun towards your left side (vision towards the left ) and using your left eye, many would do less better, which is sort of what you are doing by making people drive on the right, they do worse., hence more problems. No one country who drives on the right would admit it, but if they had the chance in the past to drive on the left, it could be argued that many thousands of lives would have been saved today. Just a thought

Also, if you think about it, the oldest man-made transport which are ships dock on their left hand side which is their port side. This is very similar to a car, bus, coach, tram or train stopping with the platform or pavement/sidewalk/footpath on it's left-hand side to pick up or drop of passengers. It is more intuitive therefore. As for cars, makes more sense to have the clutch nearer the gear stick.

And then there is St Thomas (USVI) where unlike the rest of the US, they drive on the left, but the cars are left-hand drive like in the US. Which makes it so much more interesting when you are going around the narrow winding mountain roads since there is likely no guard rails and if you look down from the driver's window, you're looking at a big drop off. I spent a month in the UK and Ireland driving around last year and it took awhile to get used to right-hand drive cars. I've been driving stick shift manual transmission vehicles for probably close to 50 years and the muscle memory just has me automatically reaching with my right hand to shift gears. With the car I was renting while there, that meant that I often automatically reached with my right hand and ended up rolling down the electric windows instead.

Yeah, but Brits and Americans both use miles, inches, pounds etc., while driving on different sides. So I guess that argument doesn't work here. :) Only we Europeans, using the superior Metric system and driving on the right side, got it all right :D
@tsu8003
@tsu8003 6 лет назад
Britain uses metric predominantly and generally only uses imperial for mileage and measuring peoples heights but are equally at home using both systems for everything so who really is superior?
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 6 лет назад
+tsu 800 The superior way of doing anything in life is to do it the most efficient way. Using multiple non coherent units to express length and weight is LESS efficient than using one system that is coherent throughout. The Metric system IS that coherent system. Therefor using it instead of using multiple units that don't directly relate is more efficient and therefore superior.
@MacXpert74
@MacXpert74 6 лет назад
+tsu 800 or another example. If you can write a computer program in 1000 lines of code that achieves the same result as a different program that uses 10.000 lines of code to do it, than the the program with 1000 lines is superior. Superior doesn't equal more complex, but equals more efficient.

We drive on the left hand side of the road...the correct side....:), which I believe dates back to the days of old. Horse men were usually right handed with their swords etc., so if approaching an enemy, his sword hand would be free on the right side of his horse, to have a bash at the enemy, without his horse getting in the way. If driving a horse on the right hand side of the road, he would have to lean across his horse to try and slash the enemy, who also had the same problem. If this makes any sense to you.....I hope.....:)

Interesting that in the Maritime environment, oncoming boats will each alter course to starboard (right), to pass. So in effect they are ‘driving’ on the road equivalent of the right side. But, just about all boats have their helm position on the starboard side of the boat which makes them the road equivalent of ‘RHD’ vehicles!

I think it is better to have the steering wheel on the left, because the pedals are in a better position, you have the inside of the wheel arch to rest your clutch foot and if they are slightly offset to the center you have the gas and break pedal in a better place, in front of your right foot ( i live in Greece by the way, so i have driven only cars with steering on the left except one military track in cyprus, so opinions from someone who drove both are welcome)

There are a couple of reasons why it is better to drive on the left in a right hand drive car. The majority of people are not only right-handed, but right-eyed as well, with a statistically significant shorter reaction time to objects seen in the right eye compared to the left. It makes more sense to have the more dominant eye closer to the oncoming traffic. There's also the point about changing gears. Left hand drive and right hand drive cars both have the same pedal arrangement, with the clutch on the left and the accelerator on the right. Having the clutch and the gear stick on the opposite sides of the body (as is the case in a left hand drive car) means performing two movements at the same which are controlled by opposite sides of the brain, which is more difficult than it would be were only one side of the brain engaged. It is also safer to keep the dominant hand on the wheel as it allows more control of direction when changing gear.

On Conestoga wagons - obviously foundational to early “driving” in the Americas, especially the US - the driver actually walked *beside* the wagon. The wagon had a hand brake mounted on the left side, so that it could be operated with their right hand. Obviously, with such a vehicle, you had to drive it on the right side of the road, if you had any hope of seeing on-coming traffic!

The argument that most people are right handed and the dominant hand should be on the steering wheel is correct. It is not about strength required for steering but better hand eye coordination. You can drive better when zigzagging or maneuvering through traffic in RHD. It is not difficult to change gears with left hand once you have practiced.

And here is a fun fact as well. NZ uses the metric system, from Europe, whilst America and the UK still use Imperial

Here's a true fact: only America and two other countries use imperial solely. Britain uses imperial for most things apart from mileage and measuring a persons height but is equally at home using both systems!

It goes back to the days when we rode horses and attacked each other a lot with swords. We rode on the left so we could draw sword and lunge quick.

To complicate matters a little more: British and European cars have the indicator stalk on the left these days, Japanese cars have them on the right. Does anyone know why?
@khusyairi
@khusyairi 6 лет назад
Freerk de Ruiter been wondering about this for quite sometime too actually. Always thought that it was because most people r right handed, so it kinda makes more sense to put the most use stalk on the right side of the steering. U know, more convenient to flick it whilst keeping our hands on the steering wheel. That has always been my theory anyways, never knew if its correct or not.
@veemacks7255
@veemacks7255 6 лет назад
I think it's related to manual cars, where you might leave your gear-changing hand on the gear stick and your other hand on the wheel. So if you want to indicate, you can still do so without having to take your gear stick hand off the gear stick and bring it back up to the wheel to indicate. It would work for Japanese cars, being RHD, your right hand is on the wheel and you can indicate without taking your left hand off the gearstick. It should mean that all RHD cars have that and all LHD cars have it the other way around, but maybe they just never had that idea.

It's due to the local preference for RHS or LHS drive and manufacturers cannot be bothered mirroring production for indicator stalks for overseas markets
@johncanalese588
@johncanalese588 6 лет назад
The automotive industry these days is all about cost-cutting! Why produce two versions of a steering column when one will do fine. So now most cars are engineered for LHD and ‘modified’ where possible for RHD markets. Look at Land Rover, an entrenched British manufacturer who builds their RHD vehicles with indicator stalks on the left side of the steering column i.e for LHD markets. The biggest global market is LHD and the Americans would never accept an indicator stalk on the right side so we RHD countries are the bunnies. Curious, the Japanese manufactures still continue to have true LHD & RHD Versions of their cars.

I am from Canada, Japanese cars here have the turn signal lever on the left so you don't use your shifting hand to indicate. Cars here all have the indicator lever on the left, actually - it may be a legal requirement in Canada / USA. The only one I can think of that didn't was a 1968 Austin 1100 our family used to own; in those days things were less regulated. When I was in Malaysia, I found that in Right-hand drive (JDM) versions, Japanese makers moved the indicator to the right side of the column, so you once again you aren't using your shifting hand to indicate. A buddy in Malaysia had a Saab, on that car it seemed that they just moved the steering column to the other side of the car from where it is in European models - the turn signals were on the left, same side as the gear change. What bothered me about driving in Malaysia was having to push away for 1st and 2nd gear, rather than pulling towards myself, as you do in LHD cars. The shifting pattern and springing of the shifter are the same for RHD and LHD, but pulling towards you is a more natural action than pushing away. The other problem with some RHD cars is having enough space for the clutch pedal to move without hitting the transmission tunnel (especially in a rear- drive car). Accelerator pedals generally don't need as much movement as a clutch, so are easier to fit against the trans tunnel. Driving on the left in Malaysia always felt slightly weird, even after 9 months, but that was after 10 years driving on the Right in Canada. There are quite a few JDM RHD cars showing up in Canada these days, but I'll never buy one, it just doesn't feel right.

Strangely Sweden cars has always been left hand drive, even long before right lane traffic. Never got a answer to this.
@LucifersTear

Three reasons why driving on the left is way better. 1) Drive thru is a doddle, strongest arm out window too collect goodies 2) It's much better and safer to have your dominant hand on the wheel at all times and use the left to shift gears. 3) Making vulgar gestures at oncoming road users for being dumb is much easier and more natural with the right hand. So that "F-you buddy!" really gets right up in his grill as he goes past.

Without watching the video, my guess is most race tracks in Europe go clockwise so it was advantageous to put the driver on the right side of the car. Perhaps I'll watch the video to confirm that I am right.
@flitsies

Well it makes more sense to drive on the left, but in the future with the advent of electric cars it won't make much difference as the steering wheel will simply shift over to the other side as there will be nothing in the way that would exclude this capability. So you car will drive either side with a click of the button you now drive which ever side depending on which country and still be able to over take.

I know why. It is left over from the Roman Empire. During the Roman era, riders and drivers held the reins in the left hand so they had their right hand - most men are/were right-handed - free to hold a sword for protection. Just like know you keep your gun or knife to the right side of your body - left side if one is left-handed.
@happy543210
@happy543210 3 года назад
the proper choice is left-hand drive because more people are right-handed and that's what you use to shift gears.
