If Rex actually kept a record of how many droids he killed, his armor would be jet black.

If he scratched his helmet for every droid kill, he wouldn’t have a helmet.

Viewers: Why does Captain Rex have tally marks on his armor. Captain Rex: Well, the tally marks count the amount of times I was not told about the plan by the general and gained a new experience through his wit. Such as being forced pushed of a wall instead of being told to jump..... Or having to lug an Astro-mech around..... However, one of my personal favorite of the bunch though is when the general’s wit inspired my own plans. Like posing as a clanker with just the head of one. Good times. Viewers: ah memory lane. Note: Made this just because of swcw nostalgia, thus it fits the bill but is not likely.

I always assumed it was the number of actual living beings he killed in combat, since that number would be significantly lower than the number of droid kills.

What if he actually counted his real kills on sentient/living beings. What I remember is him killing that slave driver and some of those snow creatures. Also during the siege of manderlore he shurely got some dead mandalorians on his cap.

New theory-the tally marks show how many times he’s said the word clanka

I can’t see it being the number of brothers he lost. Having a military background, I just could not reduce the memory of a friend lost in combat to a simple tally mark. If you lost someone in combat you would want his name remembered, not that it was just a clone trooper. That just cheapens the loss, and remember the clones are already fighting the concept that they are almost the same as droids. I believe the marks are either battles or missions, successful or not. The only other thing would be droid kills. Say one tally mark for 100 B1s, or 10 B2s, or special units.

Am I'm the only one who wanted to see more of Appo? Rex was a great clone and one of my favorite clone but Appo should have been seen more.

I think it was how many of his clone brothers but like-named ones like heavy, fives, Hardcase, so that is my theroy

I like the theory of it being how many times that armor saved him. He didn’t switch armor like others, so his attachment (mirroring Anakin) shows in this way. Also maybe the location of each tally matters, the ones on the helmet show helmet saves and ones on his arms show arm guard saves.

I believe it is in honor of his comrades. as a Rex once listed of all the friends he had, who died. And then went on to question the reason for it all toward the end of the Clone wars. Watched to the end of the video.... Nevermind!

A theory that popped on my head just now was that each mark represents when he was saved by someone else, like Anakin, Ahsoka, or his Brothers.

when I saw this video title, I thought the markings might be wins against the droids without losing any men. OR every mark represents 100 kills.

I kinda agree with the close fallen brother theory. After all, during season 7, Rex was holding that picture of himself, Cody, Fives and Echo, and makes the comment he made of 'so many troopers gone'. No doubt he misses them, but doesn't want to forget them. I also feel it could be the amount of battles he's been in, not just the ones that were victorious, seeing as that was another thing he made a comment of during the clone wars as well.

I think it means every Jedi that died during the Clone Wars it is confirmed that 20 Jedi were killed during the Clone but his Helmet has 25 markings which could mean the 5 Jedi we didn't know died during the clone wars

I think it represents fallen brothers. I like this theory the most because it gives the character more emotional depth and makes him more human. I think Rex cares more about the men he lost than the droids he killed.

Rex makes a new tally mark every time Anakin does something dumb. One day Anakin and Rex are on the final offensive push on a planet and Anakin tells Rex to get ready and then YEEETS him behind the enemy defences to shoot the droids and then on his return he tells Fives to mark another one down and Anakin is super confused.

The pic I looked at of Rex he had four fully complete tally marks so I thought it meant Fives cuz 4 ||||| ||||| ||||| ||||| is CT5555

I always thought that these marks were days during battles or campaigns in the war. It made sense to me, because usually people scratch those kinds of marks to represent finished days...Great vids man! Keep up the good work!

I think, Dave filoni just used kill marks as a sort of placeholder word, because that's the first thing you think of when you see tallies on a soldiers armor. My favorite theory is still friends lost in battle.

Few theories: How many battles he has survived, how many near deaths he has had, how many close commanders he has lost. How many clones/commanders/jedi he saved through rescue missions. i like this one because he does really love his brothers and all those he served with. I think he would have the opposite of most where they would mark how many kills they had/how many they lost. I think he would mark how many he was able to save. Would also explain the low count since he def lost more men than that and over the multiple years, he was def in more battles than that

It’s definitely for his brothers that he lost under his command. Truthfully it’s the closest thing to the number of slashes. He did everything for his brothers. He wouldn’t sacrifice a single clone life if he didn’t have too. I think he would put a mark on there after every clone death that was under his command because as you said in the video he would definitely take responsibility for the death of any clone he was responsible for. He was kind hearted and truly was a friend of the force. And I think he also did it to show experience. Rex was huge on the experienced look. Dude literally upgraded his helmet from phase 1 to phase 2 just to show that he’s been around the block a time or 2. So he may use the marks as well to show intimidation in younger clone recruits, they think it’s kills but really he knows what it’s really for. Dave feloni also said it was dealing with a death of some kind, if we know it’s not droids because he literally says he doesn’t keep count, then it’s for clones. His clones, under his command.

It could be kills of living things, like the Umbarans, I imagine at least after the battle he would have respect for those he has killed, it would be different to anyone rather than dismantling a droid, also, the marks could be for significant engagements instead of just battle, like his raid on the slavers, or anytime he has gone hunting for someone significant and did a fair amount of fighting.

I honestly think Rex carries the memory of his brethren everywhere with him. I know he didn’t get to know every single unit under him but he probably knew every field officer under him. But it could be the amount of times he should have died but didn’t.

When I was little and I first saw the tally marks, I thought it was how long Rex was In a sepratist prison, but we didn't get to see it in any of the episodes.

I think they're kills of living commanders and leaders, he killed plenty of living enemies on Umbara, but fewer of his kills were living leaders. Maybe they're droid commander kills. Maybe they're the squad mates he lost who had armour markings and known names (Denal, Mixer, Echo etc.)

The markings on Rex’s helmet match Caleb’s mask. I have no idea what they mean but a cool detail.

I think it's how many times he has saved a Jedi. It's usually the other way round, so boasting that you're the reason this particular Jedi is alive is more meaningful.

If Rex's Tally marks represented kills on Battle Droids, each line would probably represent a hundred or a thousand, hence having very little groups of tally marks. But since he lost count, it would probably be reasonable to mark it has each battle where he think he killed a huge amount of droids. However this is just my theory/thoughts. I do like the "each time his helmet saved him" and "a close fallen brother" theory. It seems the most accurate but according to Dave Filoni, they are *kill* marks.

I think the marks represent battles he survived. To me, that makes the best sense. He was in more battles then documented on the cartoon.

I find the theories surrounding either brothers lost or brothers saved to be most likely, because the sentiment behind Rex not keeping count of B1s is that he just doesn’t care about that stuff, the kills of any kind aren’t important, and it would make a lot more sense based on how he’s characterized that it’s got something to do with his fellow clones, season 7 is all about how Rex feels about loosing so many good brothers

Someone has already pointed this out but the marks probably represent how many humanoid lives he's taken for the Republic. He increases his mark count during the battle on umbra.

Those guys might have been just numbers for the caminoans but each clone knew he was more than that and so does Rex

Those marks are for octaparra droid kills as they were deployed in low numbers and Rex only got to destroy a dozen together with anakin. Also: Anakin has marks on his star fighter representing all tri droid kills as they were deployed mostly on ground rather than in orbit or space and they were fast as hell.

His inhibitor chip might also have been damaged when he was tortured by the separatists or the explosion in the citadel Another thing I would absolutely love to see in the bad batch series is that they would serve the empire later on the series, what if the bad batch doesn’t find a purpose in the galaxy then joining the empire... so for example the bad batch could start to realise that the empire is slowly taking over the galaxy so they could join the empire and they could be revealed as scar squadron 99.... would you like this to happen?

Another theorie might be that the markings on his armor indicates how many clones he killed, direct or indirect.

I personally think that the tally marks represents the amount of campaigns Rex has partaken in during the duration of the Clone War's.

honestly I believe it to be the number of battles he has taken part in, because there are markings all over his armor and he has done it by ranks as well. I feel that the markings on the helmet represent the big battles that costed lives and were critical for the republic, like battle of Umbara. The ones on his arms represent the standard battles he has taken part in, like battle of Felucia.

Commando droids are the only humanoid droids capable of taking out ARC troopers 1v1 so I think it could be them. Since they're relatively rare and usually only deployed in significant engagements it would make the kills even more impressive and noteworthy.

I think it was a symbol of how many brothers he lost to the war, so he'd remember how many laid down their lives and how all the hopes and dreams of the 501st live in the brothers currently still standing and himself

Well... Kill marks of droids is impossible due to the sheer number he offed. Loss marks of fallen soldiers is equally unlikely, given how many of his brothers die. Win marks of battles seems reasonable, given that there are ever more tales of missions spun, untold missions and battles. Annakin, Obi-Wan, Tano and the clones sometimes refer to "that one time on..." or "that mission at...." eventhough it was a not-shown thing. Protection marks seem a bit less reasonable, given how long he had that armor and how often he was in battle - therefore how often the armor must've saved his butt one way or another. VIK (very-important-kill) marks seem a good idea and would fit his personality. I think it would fit well with him to mark very vital scores, like offing a Magna-guard on his own, or helping defeat a very powerful Seppi general.
