When I voted in my last municipal election, I was required to declare, out loud, at the polling station desk, which school board I supported before they could hand me a ballot. Which I thought was ridiculous.
@seandowney6216 Yes, I sent an email to the local election and they explained it to me. Nevertheless, I don't remember ever before having to declare aloud my school board affiliation. Personally, I found it quite objectionable. It felt like a violation of the principle of blind/secret voting since one must publicly announce a personal affiliation in order to get a ballot.
@Socialism SucksCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I think Jim is saying it really shouldn't be a thing period. We don't want an explanation from the stand point of it exists, so here's how it works. We want it not to have to be part of the process.
I went to Catholic school in Canada and there is very little Catholicism being pushed in the school. The focus is on education and not the Catholic faith.
That is such a lie. I went to a catholic school in Ontario and wow the propaganda was insane. They make you read the bible in grade 9 and my religious teacher told the whole class you are going to hell if you masturbate. That teacher literally disappeared the next year. Grade 12 religion was the worst they pushed all there political ideology onto you. At the time I was just a high school student and I believe everything they told me. As I went to university and got an actual education I realize what these religious teacher are doing. We are literally publicly funding to push catholic ideology onto grade 12.
@Smozzle19 the courses at university teach you actual anatomy, real research data and not based on opinions. I build my own opinion based on what I learned. Grade 12 was all opinion based information where they tell you what is right or wrong. Catholic are clearly indoctrinating your kids.
I think all schools should be publicly funded. Education should be just as accesible as Health care. Everyone deserves decent education, and a decent chance of making something for themself. Don't punish kids for your political agendas.
it's funny for anyone to hear Catholics call gays "pedophiles" when the catholic church and Catholic school system have spent millions to hide the pedophile crimes of priests and teachers. The severity and mass recurrence and obstruction of justice in the Catholic community should legally allow canada to cause all Catholic institutions to loser their religious status.
there should always be a seperation between church and state. using government funds for religious schools should be illegal. why should my taxes go towards religion when i myself don't believe in religion.
Catholic schools were publicly funded up to grade 10 (I think it was 10), but it has only been since the 1970s or 1980s that they have been funded all the way to OAC, now grade 12.
Finally, someone showing courage in Canada to stand up for what’s right. Good job York Catholic school board. You can’t bring down the Catholic school board based off a couple people whining, because parents know if it’s the only sane education their kids are going to get today. The alternative is homeschooling. You’ll end up getting like 3 kids at a public school hehe the hippie teacher and the kids whose parents hate them.
Cant hear as the music is more important than what the reported is saying. CBC is now hiring 20 year old RU-vid video makers to edit its video Its not about the content as with everything on youtube the background music is more important.
ontario should publicly fund all school boards. Ontario is trying to minimize it's responsibility towards education and this discussion, causing resentment can only cause resentment that will facilitate unrest. Why does Ontario insist on copying issues from south of the border?
Some schools don't want funding which is right because they have full autonomy..... American has the right idea because they understand some systems don't want to be compromised.... Canada is passive and they are upset about many of these things cuz they don't understand how the systems work, anytime you take something from someone you owe them it's a principal of life and that will never change.... specialized schools that are being created in Canada are not taking funds so they can keep morals, values, policies that they desire instead of it being political like it is under public funded systems
Interesting article. It’s in the Constitution exactly to protect a minority, Catholics, who, with apparently good reason worried that the majority would take away their ability to educate their own children.
No one has ever stopped a parent from educating their child in their own home. Religion ONLY belongs in your brain, in your house, and in your church. It belongs nowhere else. Your delusions need to be kept private.
Now we have so many different minorities, we don't have a distinct majority, it doesn't make sense to keep this school board. It would be impossible to give each minority their own school board. So the best plan of action is to give everyone the same.
As someone who worked in education for a number of years, believe me when I tell you that your kids are in much better hands in the catholic school board than in the public school boards run by marxists. Even if you are not religious, if you care about having an objective and balanced education system fight like hell to keep funding for the catholic boards. In regards to not flying the pride flag, section 2(A) of the Canadian Charter of rights and freedoms guarantees Canadians the right to freedom of religion and freedom of conscious.
As someone who was in the Catholic schools system from kindergarten to grade 12 I have to disagree. In grade 12 political catholic ideology was being taught. Only one sided perspective on different topics and this is publicly funded. I didn’t chose to be in a catholic school my parents force me to be in one.
You are also force to take religion class every year in high school. I wanted to take an algebra course in grade 12 but I couldn’t because I already took all science, math and computer science you can take except algebra. You have to take English, because that is what university looks at but I couldn’t take algebra because I was force to take grade 12 religion that forces catholic ideology about society topics down your throat.
@RanStuff Grade 11 world religion. But, there was grade 9, 10, 12 religion class that was specific for catholic religion. What province are you from? I wanted to take it during summer time so I can take algebra but they didn’t offer it, they make you take it during school term.
Why don’t we merge all school boards with representatives from each school with a core curriculum? We need more money spent on students and not administrators 🤨🤨💔🇨🇦
Because to the Left, it would mean Catholic schools would have a say. It's why they want to do this. It doesn't help that this would be Toronto dictating the defunding of the Catholic schools to the Northern countryside, which has more Catholic schools than in Toronto. And the French Canadians, which most of them send their own kids to Catholic schools would be screwed over by Toronto, again.
Section 2(A) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of religion and freedom of conscience. Section 2(B) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantees freedom of thought, belief, opinion, and expression.
The Vatican is a foreign country, one of the richest on the planet. Why are Canadian taxpayers paying for another country's education system.? Do they also pick up the tab for German or Spanish schools.? If not, why not.?
I am an atheist . So I think any religious funding of schools is inherently flawed . However , the timing of this discussion is interesting to say the least . They won't fly the Pride flag so we are talking about defunding them . I am against flying the Pride flag at schools for the same reason I don't like religious schools . I have a crazy idea , how about schools teach kids the skills like writing , reading , math ....I know it's old fashioned but maybe don't have ideological agendas
Education always has an ideological agenda. People have been talking about defunding Catholic schools for decades, the recent flag debate just illustrates why it needs to happen.
@@Maxmulham I have no problem with how people want to live . I just don't want it all shoved down my throat . Schools are failing kids on providing the skill sets they need
I am a Catholic and I have attended Catholic schools my whole life, I am in my 2nd last year of high school . I pray, I attend my church, read my bible, pray some more. I don't believe schools should push agendas. From experience Catholic schools are not pushing any agendas down kids throats. They teach them the bible and how to read it but they also teach them about Islam, Buddhism and other religions. They teach them Catholic values (which in my opinion are every humans' foundation of morals) So I find it quite shocking to hear that people want to defund a Catholic school board. Just because you don't want your kids to learn some good morals, doesn't mean you have to destroy it for everyone else because if I grow up in a nation without these schools. I am homeschooling
U want to get mad at someone on behalf of the indigenous community get mad at peta who destroyed tgere fur trade so they had to look for help Instead of thriving like they were
Would love to have Stephen Lecce pull the plug on Catholic education. I am a Catholic educator. The Catholic system as it is now, does nothing but serve the interests of the government.
We are mad because Catholics have the highest rate of molesting children. Putting children in a school run by a bunch of molesters is probably not a good idea
@@djayjp what of the North that has lots of lower class kids from French Canadian homes, with schools that are packed with about 20-30 kids in a classroom? About a third of them would be able to afford the education for all their kids, and the rest in already crammed public school classes? Ready to have 50 kids in an already crammed public school classroom?
Disappointingly the YCDSB fail to stand against hate, embrace tolerance, acceptance and love leaving minority children vulnerable in this divisive political climate. Not offering sanctuary and safety of the minority betrays the spirit under which charter rights granted the Catholics school board's existence.
