It's actually sad bc some theatre kids (for lack of better words) have trouble with left/right because they're just not built for it, same as there are also dyslexic actors who take a longer time to learn scripts, and actors of various types of neurodivergency who have trouble with spatial awareness, behind the scenes social aspects, or really just about anything, and then end up being labeled lazy, or so called "divas" for having very particular ways of learning scripts, blocking, etc. The "you have to be better than everyone else" mindset that theatre kids have is EXTREMELY damaging and /that/ is why I don't act anymore, despite it being something I love very much! I am/was a theater kid. As a person who’s very shy and anxious it was kinda a struggle… Surprisingly I was never too nervous to act on stage instead I was more nervous just to talk to people around me 😅 There’s lots of kind and accepting people but many get very over the top and sometimes rude. It really is the little things like someone ranting about how they should’ve gotten a role, the side eyes, ppl saying “congrats” in a condescending way, and not being included. When you’re constantly put up against each other people will get petty… Also I remember being in Macbeth and having to “be dead” on the stage for 20 minutes with stinky smoke by my face and I never want to hear those monologues again! Also the guy who played Macbeth was method acting so he would like actually push you and stuff… he basically looked insane 24/7! That man was a good actor so when I say he was scary, he was SCARY!!! He also spit in my face but I think that was an accident 😅 Being the quite one surround by a ton of people who are loud as hell and REALLY wanna be the center of attention (not everyone) was very difficult. The more theater people I meet the more I realize how much they like talking about themselves (Definitely not everyone) especially when starting college. I didn’t have many close friends and not gonna lie constantly being rejected or type casted was super crushing. And when you weren’t in shows the divide between you and other “theater kids” grew. I thought I was gonna study musical theater in college (I even auditioned for schools last year) but I realized that I really can’t handle being in the constant cycle of auditioning and dealing with rejection. I really enjoyed acting and singing and kinda wanted to prove people wrong? But rn I’m in a bad cycle where I want to sing (I’ve studied that much longer) but as soon as I do I automatically hate myself which kinda scares me since singing used to be the one thing I actually liked about myself. Okay idk why but I just gave a whole rant there… Anyways the lineup was actually pretty good representation based on my experience 😅 ya got your calm ppl, very confident ppl, and your crazy people…

As a former shy theater kid I relate to the feeling of being left out so much. I did theater for 6 years in middle/highschool and I think that definitely sparked my hatred for highly extroverted people lol. I relate so much! In hs I was never picked for roles bec I was “too tall” (6’ girl) and was never really nurtured into anything. So I didn’t go to college for theater even though I really loved it. Fast forward almost 20 years after high school and I’m back doing community theater. I now know what my vocal range is and I get roles that I love. I still am shy but on stage I really thrive. I’m kinda glad I didn’t go to school for theater bc I hate how competitive it is. Unless you are going to try to teach it or be a professional actor (super hard obviously) then just do it for fun. I'm glad you did some unpacking of why you dislike the stereotype of the theatre kid. I participated in a couple of school plays and enjoy listening to musicals, but I'm not sure if that really makes me a theatre kid or not. I don't fully understand the stereotype myself. But I do find that a lot of the things people say they dislike about theatre kids basically boils down to being an effusive and expressive person who cares a lot about a particular subject. And when people make fun of theatre kids, even if it's for things that I don't personally do, it's still kind of hurts because those are the same sorts of things that are common in more extroverted autistic people, and I'm autistic. Even if someone is being annoying or inappropriate, I don't think bullying is the solution. Having had people tell me to kill myself, and worse, I wouldn't wish that on anyone no matter how much they sing in public.

Another thing about the theatre kid hate is the fact that often (at least in my uni program) they’re happy and having fun, not hurting anybody. I don’t understand people who come into the theatre building and hear solo’s being practiced or lines being run or just laughter and call it annoying. Why do you have to crush positivity? Even if you don’t like it why do you have to SAY anything. People are happy and not hurting you so why ???? this is so well said!! a lot of people in theatre (including myself) are neurodivergent, and it truly does just boil down to the fact that i have never found another space that i could unmask in. theatre kids, while they can get loud and overexcited, are really just extremely enthusiastic and passionate about the art and the culture that surrounds it. theatre people are genuinely the most non-judgmental and inclusive people i’ve ever met, and the purpose of the environment (in most cases) is to hold space for people’s emotions, respect other people’s boundaries, and to learn to understand your own thought process and emotions. because a lot of people in theatre are nd as well as queer, it really is just a loving and inclusive space. it really frustrates me to hear about “theatre kid” stereotypes when a lot of them are based in mental ableism and queerphobia

Most of my positive social experiences, in school, were from drama club, so I feel deeply at peace with theater kids. Like, I was (almost) never bullied in drama club (and when I was, I typically did not notice until thinking back years later like "WAIT, they were trying to be mean!" 🤣), and singing duets with friends who were as into musicals as I was was probably where my most genuine friendships were formed. (Plus, having other people being cringey around me makes me not have to constantly worry if I'm being cringey.) All of this to say, I'm probably as theater kid as they get, lol. And it's fine that it's not your thing. It can seem pretty saccharine, depending on your mileage for those kinds of things. We all find our own safer proxies for human genuineness. You just have to find what variety and degree of genuineness you find most palatable. At risk of sounding earnest. Oops.

I was a BSM for almost four years in Uni and working with professionals or even student talent was great! I've even performed on-stage before and knew great performers! But still ...they weren't Theater Kids(TM) The real Hell was the computer lab in the basement where at least 10 music and theater students were crowded around the desks, each singing their own song louder than the other and OVER my noise-reducing earbuds because they were nervous.

i was a theatre kid for like 6 months in 2016 and whether i learned anything applicable to the world outside of theatre is debatable but what i did come away with is a general burning resentment towards theatre kids. some were insanely obsessed with controlling others (and MEAN about it). some kids did make theatre their entire personality after doing one show, and they became such a clique of bullies towards anyone new. some were so self-obsessed that they could not possibly be bothered to consider the lives, experiences, or feelings of anyone around them. unfortunately hamilton was still fairly new at the time and WOW did they love bursting into song for exactly no reason. *those* kids are the ones that make people hate theatre kids. the only reason i don't entirely regret my choices to participate in theatre is because i got to see firsthand that the stereotypes are so very true, and i got a good look at the kind of person i never want to be. i am here for the theatre kid slander but i do really appreciate jordan unpacking some of his own feelings and where his bias comes from. i think a lot of bias against theatre kids does come from a similar place of internalized shame about being "too much" along with a disdain for the ignorantly inconsiderate people we may have encountered. and it's not necessarily that all theatre kids are obnoxious or all obnoxious kids are in theatre, it's just an unsettlingly strong correlation. thank you for coming to my ted talk

I don't think I can be considered a true theatre kid, as I've been in only 2 musicals and only one in school, but I adore theatre and the rich, beautiful version of storytelling it has. I do actually love seeing high school productions of plays though, most of the ones I have seen are chock full of kids with so much raw talent finally seeing their hard work, late night, fumbling and tripping, practice and nerves all come to a peak with a stunning show-mistakes and all, it's just so lovely to see them shine. Talented people who are genuinely kind are just the greatest and deserve the entire world.

I loved theater in school, i think as an autistic person part of it was that I'm incredibly socially anxious and already acting all the time. But my school was very small so the theater kids were just my whole class (of like mostly football boys and cheerleaders) so I didn't really experience this side of theater 'community'. I think it would've been difficult but ultimately healthy for me if I'm being honest? like people think I'm cringe anyway just for being the way i am as a person so being around people who are unabashedly themselves and out there maybe would've helped me accept myself sooner.

My genuine recommendation if you want a different view of theater kids would be to watch Tick Tick Boom (new movie on netflix) and THEN watch behind the scenes stuff with Lin Manuel Miranda and/or the cast. I do think there are some people who can be genuinely annoying about their hobbies, and the nature of theater probably makes it easier for those particular types to be annoying. However, there's a good amount of people out there who are just very fun and energetic and simply have a wholesome and nerdy love for theater. I've definitely been seeing that more watching Tick Tick Boom stuff because Andrew Garfield and the rest of the cast seem to be such cool people overall. Aside from that though this was a really fun video to watch! Thanks Jordan

As someone who participated in some theater in high school and enjoys it, but was never in that Theater Kid squad, you completely ripping into theater kids is absolutely hilarious. Luckily, in college, all of the annoying theater kids are in theater programs now, so we normal actors finally get the clubs to ourselves, just to mess around and have fun.
