I needed this today!! After several recent designs that cracked or messed up edible prints, I realized that the good ones had been your marshmallow fondant! I have also been dreading making it due to the mess! I need one day to make a bunch of marshmallow fondant and giant batch of buttercream and hire a housekeeper to clean the powdered sugar! Oooh, I will time that for dog groomer, since my long-haired dachshund invariably turns white, and sticky, from powdered sugar plumes (with towels and so on as guards).

I was always using store bought fondant and gave up because it never worked for me. Then I found you & that was a game changer! When I tried your way & it didn't come out right, I went back to your video. Yup, I missed a step. Thank you Karolyn for the video's, they are so useful!! ❤

A tip for the powdered sugar mess. Get a shower cap and cut a hole for your mixer attachment. The elastic band will hold snug on the bowl and minimize mess while making buttercream and fondant. 👏🏻 I 100% agree with the whole you have to play with it and find what works for you. Another variable is if you’re using leftover fondant and working that into other fondant. It’s going to set up even faster, (in my experience). You really truly have to find your own “happy medium” that’s going to look slightly different for everyone depending on what brand of powdered sugar or shortening or marshmallows or humidity or…. Find your happy medium 😘 Thanks for another great tutorial.

@@kaedee13 you’re welcome. Try it first on an empty bowl to make sure the hole is cut big enough. Otherwise it will catch when your attachment is turned on and rotating, then get knocked off and pulled into the bowl.

Thank you, love this! And, yes, I forgot to mention about using the leftover fondant. I frequently mix it with newer fondant to help it set faster. And I always say that the recipe always varies depending on humidity and other factors. Once you work with it enough, you get the feel for it!

I love this, thank you!! I recently saw a post where a baker wraps her mixer with seran wrap lol. It’s genius!! You can see through it and watch without any powdered sugar blasting out all over the place. 🙌🏻

I will never buy fondant again because of you. I love your recipe and it costs so much less to make it. It’s a chore but well worth it.

The only time I get elephant skin with store bought, is either I've I'm playing way too much with it, or when I dye it a color . It always happens when I color the fondant. But the tylose part is never an issue for me. I find it to dry rock hard for toppers.

Some people say they have luck with the store bought fondant and tylose. What brand do you use? And I agree, I've been doing this for so long that it's second nature to me. It gets easier with practice!

Hi! Hear me out…..always drape the mixer with a wet towel. Not saturated though. The beastly powdered sugar flings itself but sticks to towel. Wayyy less mess!

LOL thank you!! It can keep up to a month if you store it right. I wrap it in plastic wrap, put that in a ziplock bag, then store that in an airtight container.

Thank you, Karolyn. You are a treasure of knowledge! I attached some decorations to the side of a chilled buttercream cake with buttercream and THEY FELL OFF!!! What did I do wrong and has this ever happened to anyone else? The lady was not happy with me. UGGH! Does anyone have any pointers? The decorations were not large or very heavy. The cake was kept in the cooler so the buttercream did not melt, and I used as much as I could without having it squish out the sides. Was the buttercream too soft to begin with? It had held for 24 hours. I was off when she came to pick up the cake, so I had it finished ahead of time.

I always use water to attach the fondant, or piping gel would work too. With buttercream it sometimes behaves like chocolate and when it gets too cold it doesn’t hold the decoration and it can snap off.

Oh no! Unfortunately we all know the feeling. You said you put it in a cooler. I always refrigerate my cakes. That way, the butter in the icing solidifies and really glues the decorations to the cake. What kind of icing are you using?

Thank you so much for sharing these information🤍 May I ask you a question? Do you let it dry? Let’s say that you have to make a 3D number for topper on the cake do you have to make it overnight to dry out and use it or you can make it and put it on top of the cake at the same time?

For toppers that have to hold their shape, I make them at least a day or two in advance and let it sit out at room temp so the air can dry it out!

I can’t get homemade fondant to work for me. Satin Ice and Wilton don’t either. You know what works beautifully!!?? THE FREAKING PREMADE FONDANT FROM DOLLAR GENERAL!!!! It tastes amazing and works wonderfully with CMC powder.

No, I only have 1/4 tsp per 2 pounds. That's just enough to make it stretchy and pliable. If I added more, it may get too hard.

Same! I use marshmallow fondant the majority of the time but when I need to make figures or cut out letters I like store bought because it gets harder much faster once tylose is added then marshmallow fondant does.

I'm sure it works for some people! I just find that most people who are having that issue are buying their fondant. If you don't mind me asking, what brand of fondant do you like to use?

@@KarolynsKakes I only use Wilton if using store bought. I tried Satin Ice once and hated it! I found that the top layer of the Satin Ice when rolled out would dry out super quick (no tylose added) so it would cause cracking and wrinkles. Very frustrating. But I do love marshmallow fondant when it comes to covering cakes. My marshmallow fondant does harden when tylose is added, I just find that Wilton sets up faster, which is always a plus if you are running behind!

@@KarolynsKakesI have used a few different kinds, satin ice, renshaw, I mostly use a brand called Virgin Ice that I get at Bulk Barn (not sure if you have that in the US).

No, but I don't make cookies. The one time I did, I used royal icing.

I made marshmallow fondant for like 6 years, and I did it like you do with with corn syrup because I found the marshmallows to have pretty much no stick to them. I started buying my fondant a few years ago because I just hate making it with a fiery passion. Then the cost suddenly almost doubled on store bought, so I decided to go back to marshmallow. Well I can no longer make it. It just won't work for anything. There is zero stretch to it, and it just breaks off 😢

I have the hardest time with fondant, is there anyway you can share exact amounts of the syrup, water & Tylose 🙏🙏🙏 I’ve tried & tried and I fail easy time. I end up buying the fondant and using the paneling method to put it on the cake. It never fails that when I try to drape it over the cake it tears or it gets holes🥲😭💔
