Just came across this channel. I'm mighty pleased. I must say I'm impressed how this this Pastor dealt with this question, very succinctly … without even quoting 1 Timothy 2:11-14 ….. which is very clear.. But a Scripture that most CHOSE to ignore. But his explanation really embodies all the reasons why they should not be.
John Piper has some great sermons, books, and now the Ask Pastor John videos. You should definitely check out some of his books! I attended his church as a child and he’s an extremely kind and genuine man of God.
The Comments below are sad. I appreciate that John Piper and the Bethlehem congregation can maintain biblical things like this in an age when it unpopular. I mean....We are talking about church and worship here not American politics or something. ...Really its not about what John Piper thinks but about what God thinks. The bible is actually perfectly clear on the subject. Even if it is unpopular what Piper is describing is what the Bible says. Please listen to a few of these scriptures with an open mind: "1 Cor 14:34-35 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.And if they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church." 1 Timothy 2:11-12 "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence." 1 Timothy 3:1-7 ESV "The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? "
@Tomcloud what is truly painful is distorting the Word of God like you do. there isn't even a hint of Christ like character in you judging from what you wrote. it is truly sickening that people claim to know Jesus yet speak like this
Dean Taylor Ronan’s 16 full of women leading in churches; Phoebe, Junia, Lydia, Priscilla! The very first designated true gospel preacher is Mary Magdalene! Jesus said as much giving her the honour of showing his resurrected self to her first and that she was to go tell the others the good news. That’s the funny ion of preacher. Also Acts whereby those in the upper room in hiding both men and women went out in what us now called Pentecost. They received the Holy Spirit like flames and in turn converted 3000 that day!!! Men and women are to preach the gospel and no church existed in those days. Just people who were infilled with the Holy Soirit who shared the best they could! Otherwise none of you could preach today, they carried the flame 🔥 and all have that opportunity if they open their hearts to Christ!! Don’t restrict Gods word, that’s a sin.
@DyingToLiveForJesus You know, I mainly agreed with you. I believe (because the Word of God says) that women should keep silent in churches, submit to her husband, wear heading coverings while praying or prophecying, etc. Yet you also made it seem like we're just an object. We aren't. God loves us just as much as men, we simply have a different role. A woman can help teach a man as we've seen with Priscilla and Aquila, yet women cannot pastor. Women can also prophecy and be a judge, yet not a pastor. Meaning, God knows we're smart also. Fact is, Eve was made from Adam's rib. Eve fell into sin first. Yet God still had compassion on both man and women. We simply have different roles. We're not just here to look pretty without the ability to think or spread the Gospel as your first comment has insisted.
I agree 100% there is a church out here that represents piper church and they do the opposite , women go on The pulpit and read thru the Bible and this made us uncomfortable, we didn’t return . I was shocked this was a John piper church , here in Cali.
When people take issue with the biblical roles of women in the Chruch, it's never about how they they want to serve and edify the congregation, it's about ego and feeling significant based on feminist ideals.
innerfire89 this is true but someone could easily flip your comment around and say “when people take issue with women having leadership roles in church, it’s never about how they want to serve and edify the congregation, it’s about ego and feeling significant based on misogynistic ideals”. I think that the verses which Paul and Timothy Wright about we’re fit for a certain time, situation and context and we need to be aware of that.
@@Clebs98 The Word specifically gives the reason for why women should never teach a man or have authority over a man: "For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [14] And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner." 1 Timothy 2:13-14 That is the exact reason given. It is unchanging through time and culture because the same reason will always remain. God bless you and peace be with you.
@@MegaJimbob125 Reread it. It’s not talking about any man. Especially read the part where it mentions, let them ask their OWN husbands at home. Reading a scripture or testifying in the pulpit is not usurping(wresting violently) authority from a man.
@@MegaJimbob125 lol, a grand predominance of scholars (just shy of unanimity) think the pastoral epistles were NOT written by Paul. Besides, the argument given in 1 Tim. is obviously a non-sequitur.
Its so sad to see how even after being years in the ministry he is not able to understand the role of a women in the church. I already see the contradiction here when he said that since women are not allowed to preach in the pulpit, so should women even stop praying, reading the scripture and leading songs in the pulpit ? Someday all the men who misinterpreted the bible and think women are not called to preach in the pulpit will have to eat their own words when they realise how wrong they are
I respect and I would like to say that: Women are also used by God. We see it in the bible. If a woman cannot read a bible text or even praying in Betlethem church, she cannot be a Sunday School teacher too, or not? Can we find in the bible women praying? Or in charge of "elders" things?
He seems almost apologetic for following the Scripture. Women seem extremely rebellious about this in the church. All I know is that my personal rebellion has always gotten me in serious trouble. Women are trying to intimidate men about this, and, sadly, in top many churches, it is working. Stand firm Dr. Piper, and don't apologize.
Such sound doctrine with boundaries within the church. For we know that God's word is perfect and that 2 Timothy 3-16 that all scripture is inspired by God including 1 Corinthians 14:34. So to dispute the word of God and say there are mistranslations or errors is the equivalent of a child shaking their fist at God.
He never apologized. I think he answered this question very kindly. We are commanded to let all of our words be seasoned with salt. I think that he was very appropriate here. This person is probably asking that question because they feel women are being left out. The appropriate answer is to explain what the Bible teaches, then tell women what God has in the church for her to thrive. The appropriate answer is not to berate her for asking a question. Also lastly remember this is probably a sister in Christ asking this question. You don’t answer your sister in Christ back harshly. Maybe the world you can be more aggressive with them. i don’t know, but not a sister asking a simple question. She is probably new to reformed thinking.
WOW! This guy clears this matter up, it's not literal women. You got to watch this! Let me know what you think? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DZsS0DqJ2ZY.html
Hi please can somone help me. how do the women who have no husband, get their questions answered? Also what if you are married and your husand is not a Christian/ or is a Christian, and doesn't know the answers? Thank you youtube community
@@LucasS12 That is what I also teach in regard to those who have no husband or where the husband is inadequate to answer 👍 but where a husband is present, a wife should always ask him first, adequate or inadequate to answer, before getting the response of the pastor/elder. The husband is the head of the wife, so he is the first point of contact in all things, period. That is my opinion.
In the Bible in Isaiah 54:5 it says that your maker is your Husband, the Lord of Hosts is His name, so I find answers to my questions in the Bible. If not, I have a notebook full of questions that hopefully will one day be answered by God.
That is ridiculous that a woman cannot give a prayer or read a scripture behind the pulpit or give her testimony. She is not functioning as the pastor and is not usurping authority over the pastor. SMH.
1 Timothy 3:1-7New King James Version (NKJV) Qualifications of Overseers 3 This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the position of a bishop,[a] he desires a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the HUSBAND of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach; 3 not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,[b] but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous; 4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence 5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?); 6 not a novice, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the same condemnation as the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Husband = Male If you are going to answer me back please answer with a Bible verse.
1 Timothy 3:11 - Deacons must be HUSBANDS of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households. Romans 16:1 - I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. Is the bible contradicting itself? Nope. 1 Timothy is clearly a letter addressing issues in Ephesus. Joel 2:28-29 - And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit.
@Deb Harris Women can serve as deacons according to that scripture. Phoebe was a deacon What are the responsibility of a deacon. Can they pray preach teach or lead in praise and worship
If so, biblically, women should not be in a worship team, not in Sunday school teaching, not as a seminary teacher, maybe also not in things related to sharing Jesus, but we know it's not like this. So does women have a role in the bible or church? Or is she just to teach or read secular things or schools or Universities places?
If they dont let unmarried men and plain men who have not proven themselves authority in the church to pray @ the pulpit, then i agree with this. Otherwise, it is very difficult for me to understand. I get a ton if great info from this man and learn a lot from him. An answer and explanation would be awesome here for me. Thanks. God bless all of us.
I appreciate very much of Piper, but some of these symbols are subjective and (for someone who passionately cares about exegesis) not explicitly found in scripture.
Can a Male that is not a pastor or elder pray in your pulpit. If it represents Pastoral authority then shouldn't' Plain laymen not be allowed to pray in the pulpit regardless of the plumbing in our body?
There is a blessing for obeying. We were a thriving penticostal church on the edge of carnal crazy popular. No problem with lots of woman singers. Testimonies. Organist. Childrens church.etc. It started with a 2 woman imparticular. One very carnal rich and married. One single fornicator (but no one knew it.) Both had no problem rebuking men. Both were very powerful in promoting there influence on the pastor who was to busy gathering tithe money to build a bigger church. Big red flags flying all over but who cares. The single girl quit and the rich lady years later divorced and led many astray. Now 20 years later i see how the Lord/enemy brought them as a test we failed miserably. I believe the jezebel spirit can creat a zeal in a woman that is self seeking. But also im against any man or woman speaking any time in any church when out of Gods will. Gods order. Out of authority. Offending people. I could write a book on it and include several imbittered woman(my exwife included) ive met and pastors cant control them.
This guy got it so wrong. Paul even said that if a woman is praying or prophesying, she should have her head covered. Any woman under his ministry may have never had the chance to move in their gifts due to his lack of understanding. It’s quite said how ignorantly some churches are lead.
elialapo I don't agree with John Piper here. I believe the Pastors should not be on a stage or having a pulpit. I also believe two year olds should pray (everyone should pray and read scripture). But, in the Bible, women cannot preach and teach over a man. So I cannot see a woman as an elder biblically.
There's simply no sutch thing in Scripture of a woman being a elder or in a pastoral role, I'm very moderate in my beliefs but John Piper is right on the money here. And anyone contradicting that statement they're lieing to you.
Bishop and Elder is an office for a man. If you read the scripture, no woman ever testified that she was a preacher, pastor, etc. No way she can be no Elder in God’s church.
There should be no such situation. That is not the model of a Biblical church body. What part of "An overseer must be the husband of one wife..." (1 Tim 3:2) don't people understand? It isn't possible for a woman to be a husband. It's like a square circle; it cannot logically exist.
@Lightning Girl 8888 tell me how you really feel😁. Clearly you have me confused with a misogynist. I was referring only to the roles of men and women in the church, which is the context here. Outside of the church body, this Biblical text has no relevance. 90% of your rant is not applicable to my response, but the Bible is clear on roles of overseers (pastors). This is not negotiable and God, in his providence, knows what he is doing when he sets up roles. Women have especially important roles in the church and in life. However, these roles do not include pastoral assignments as God's Word clearly indicates. If you don't like this, take it up with God. We are to maintain God's design for the church regardless as to whether it is popular or not.
Then Paul, John and even Jesus himself would be disqualified. It’s not about being married, it’s about being monogamous since some in the culture back then would take multiple wives and instead of asking them to divorce their wives after coming to Christ, they said stay as you are take care of your wives but you can’t be a church leader. But Paul even advocates for celibacy over marriage so it would not make sense to interpret this as marriage being obligatory.
Matthew 19:11-13, 1 Corinthians 7:8-9, it is clear to serve GOD is a human honor, yet to serve in a given position, the qualification must be met if they are already set; we know what they are. There is no confusion, merely a lack of prayer, study and good teachers when we are unable to hear...
Now I understand why Jesus says call no man rabbi or teacher. There is a criteria for elders, but after seeing Piper’s response to whether he should continue his ministry (in light of his son etc), I don’t know if this strict application is about sticking to the bible literally or simply men doing what they want.
Those who agree with John Piper: do you forget that Paul had messengers who would deliver his’ letters to churches? A few of them were women. They not only delivered his’ letters but they read them out to the whole church, explaining Paul’s teaching and going into greater depth! How about you get off your high horses and do some proper research on context of the verses in 1 Corinthians and 1 Timothy before you start exerting your ill-informed opinions on the word of God. What a shame it is to know that churches are missing out on hearing God’s revelation of truth and love through many devoted and strong servants who happen to be female.
@@glennwalker5739 As far as I know, It's NOT there. It is so sad that women want to boss men. Women CAN preach and teach from the pulpit--just NOT to men and/or during Sunday worship service. They can stand on the stage and the podium, and teach other WOMEN in WOMEN only meetings. They can also teach children and teenagers. There is PLENTY for us to do!
@Caleb Dominikovich, you made quite the assertion, but didn't care to back it up with any references. It doesn't, to the best of my knowledge, clearly state in the scripture that women read these letters out in the church gatherings. However the scriptures DO clearly state that woman must keep silent in the churches. We are commanded to follow the commands of God, and Paul specifically says that this is a "command of the Lord" (1 Corinthians 14:37), that "woman should keep silent in the churches" (1 Corinthians 14:34). This teaching is hard to swallow, but it is only due to our hard-heartedness to follow the command, rather than the command being hard to understand. That is why woman are reminded to "be in submission" (vs. 34), so that they can be obedient to this command. If woman do not submit, they will be disobedient to this command of the Lord to his church. Therefore, woman should "be in submission" (vs.34) to the "command of the Lord" (vs. 37) to "keep silent in the churches" (vs. 34). Your extra-biblical teaching does not make void the command of God stated in his word. His word is truth!
No actually its really simple women are not teach men that's God's Word. You are too cowardly to stand on it. Pray you would have enough faith and courage to against falae interpretations. That verse applies to all churches. All eras all times. You do gymnastics to get around it by shallow pentecostal, charismatic skip rope to disobey the clear scriptures. I was in a pentecostal church for 5 years ok. I saw so many unbiblical practices. Speaking in tongues without an interpretation, lying about miracles, tithing, prosperity preaching, association with likes of benny hinn etc... and yes women preachers. Isnt it funny all the false teachers and practices are in the charismatic churches who dont study context or even care about deep Bible study.
The reading of God's word and praying is more sacred even than preaching, I think, and I wouldn't want to outsource it to anyone. I would want to be the one leading my congregation in these sacred parts of the service.
"Suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression" 1 Timothy 2:12-14 (KJV) It was Eve that was deceived by the serpent, not Adam. He was decieved and seduced by the woman Eve. Just as men are still today.
This is the logos but if you go deeper and rightly divide the word of Truth study the Hebrew and receive the Rhema word of God you will discover this is not literal. This is not God's original intent...He is Just and the same Holy Spirit abiding in me is not to be silenced by my gender.
There are female ministers/pastors and vicars whether people like it or not. Before people say the women who are ministers don’t exist or that they’re fake they do exist. They’ve been to bible collage just like the men and been trained to preach. I don’t understand how or why churches have a habit of putting men on pedestals and backing women into corners. This doesn’t seem fair on either genders both church and society puts a huge amount pf unnecessary pressure on men and this worries me. Where are the spaces and environments in church fir men to go and get to support when they need it? Why do we keep piling the pressure on men and expecting them to cope? As for women why do we keep silencing women and degrading them in church? This doesn’t seem fair and women are being backed into corners. These apply in church and in home/marriage. Going back to women in ministry women did have their own ministry in the bible. There were lots of influential women in the bible who were gifted at many things. Jesus affirmed women, loved them, valued them and healed them. Why are many churches today only viewing their approach and handling of women to be restricted to a few verses written by Paul? Paul has said so many things about women most of which don’t seem to value women or appreciating them the same way Jesus did. I’ve wrestled with this for a while now abs I can’t reach a conclusion. Plus surly it’s bette r to hear a sermon which is biblically correct regardless of whether it’s from a man or a women?
I love Piper, but this is the worst answer he has ever given to any question ever. The pulpit, biblically, is not a sacred place. That the pulpit is a small part of ministry in the church is highly incorrect and illogical. John is apologizing the whole time he is answering. Why do leaders think they have to know everything? I’d rather him say “I’m not sure” or “I don’t know” than this silly answer that is unbiblical and makes him look vascilating and weak. Sorry John, you whiffed on this one.
How are you so sure sister its the Holy Spirit & not your own thoughts? So is John Piper void of the Holy Spirit and your not? I don't think so, very likely your a believer as well. Just be careful when you say something like that. Holy Spirit is never in disagreement, but human beings have the capacity to make mistakes. I am still researching on this topic to be sure
@@lBaerdeLouisYAna the scriptures are not 💯 accurate. Research have proven it. Even Jesus himself said that we should follow his ways. Moses rules, an eye for an eye became erroneous in the NT. Rules change over time. Also, I had a few visions where God is pulling me to the altar to speak, so I'm sure there's a reason why my beliefs contradicts some of the verses. Please do more research. It's not about just reading the verse, you have to make sure it's accurate and narrow down the translation to it. Hopefully one day God will open your eyes to this wisdom
@@seungk8607 Well said everyone thinks they know it all. Humility is the answer and genuinely asking the holy spirts help with interpretation of scripture from a sincere heart. I personally believe a female cannot be a preacher or a pastor, and I am a female who would love to teach the bible in church, however I cannot find any permission in the bible to do so. Thefore l must be obedient to god and not teach in church to men
Wow. Yuck. Some of the best and most Christlike pastors I’ve ever had are women. Reading the Bible requires looking at the context, the backstory and the time period when it was written. Also, the first person to share the good news that Christ was resurrected was a woman - Mary. This video and oppressive theology is so harmful.
@Mark OnTheBlueRidge well laid out explanations, ill try to put my flesh aside by the help of the HolySpirit so we can have a balanced platform from which to converse . i believe strongly thAT christianity in its unperverted form is the onLy "religion" that gives true freedom to women and that is very important as one of the things Christ came to purchase for us (men and women alike) is liberty to live a full life in submission under Him even here on earth. i also agree that feminism may have taken their fight a tad bit too far (and thats only because men over the ages have abused the privileges that come with the gender and women feel they've had enough. the bible clearly says in Gal3:28 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise.… there was a curse that came with the disobedience of eve "your desire shall be towards the man, and he shall lord over you" and i believe Christ has restored the female gender thru the cross and so the sin and weakness of eve shouldn't be a stone to hang on a woman under the lordship of jesus. the Holy Spirit can breathe on any vessel and use whomever He wants to use irrespective of gender and age )( i say age because i also know of churches that won't submit under a leader who is younger than them, as if to say the anointing is a respecter oftags the man being under christ and the woman being under the woman was strictly under the context of marriage. what u said about women pastors being disobedient to christ, i honestly dont know what u mean by that. even male pastors struggle with the flesh, no one is above fighting the good fight of putting the flesh under. i am a woman, and i can say that ive seen women who have made themselves available to God to use and He has honored that. dont call unclean what God has called clean. at the end of the day Jesus should be our focus and not the gender of who brings the word to God. im so hungry that ill collect the word from even a horse's mouth. if that is the channel thru which God wants to bless me
Charissa Ruth with love and respect sister the reason given for women not to teach a man and not to have authority over a man is specifically given to us which is not because of the time or culture it was in but because of the beginning of time which is never changing : - "For Adam was formed first, then Eve. [14] And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner." - 1 Timothy 2:13-14
Hannah Wills 1 John 5 1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
Heidi Stauff he will answer to God for following his word. His word says for women not to teach or exert authority over men. Why don't you call God what you called John Piper or tell God he's wrong. May God have mercy on you in your unbelief.
