I think something especially people who aren't multilingual don't always realize is that speaking a language doesn't at all mean you are able to teach it to people who don't know it. Especially when it comes to a native language - it's something you learn as a baby/young child just by picking up what's happening around you and it's very intuitive, so you don't always KNOW stuff like grammar rules because you didn't need to learn them formally, you just instinctively know what's right for the most part. So somebody who is qualified to teach a language would be able to tell you "What you said was wrong because it broke x grammar rule" but a native speaker who isn't qualified to teach might just be able to say "What you said was wrong because it just felt like it didn't fit".

I actually really love that you don’t teach asl because I’ve found it really hard to just find youtubers who just sign and do casual videos with specifically American Sign Language and who don’t revolve their entire channel around the language. If people want to learn asl they can easily find numerous channels that will teach them it, it’s harder to find videos to just enjoy the video and the content while also getting “practice” through like immersion of the language.

I'm learning people don't really know what it takes to teach a language. I'm an oralist who also signs and people are always telling me to teach. I am a lazy signer and suck at fingerspelling (suck at spelling in general) but to them, not knowing sign, they think I'm the best signer. *roll eyes* Also, I love watching your videos! Makes me so happy each time you post!

Teaching is hard! I still get people wanting me to teach ASL on my channel and I'm like ??? Why??? 1, I'm not fluent. 2, I don't know the first thing about teaching, lol. I still make too many mistakes to even attempt. I only "taught" once and that was showing Christmas signs on Jessica's channel and even that was pushing it for me.

I follow your videos because it helps me with understanding conversations with deaf people. Everyone is different, being style, different communities, how they were raised and educated. It's all personal. And sign language changes, developes, evolves. You have to open your eyes and your hands. It's beautiful.

So true about books having out-dated signs...the only books I've seen in bookstores are from early 2000s or older. At first I was teaching myself with the books I bought, and using Lifeprint.com, and a couple of youtube videos. When I finally found someplace I could take courses, I found it helped to have the basics down already, but my teacher informed me that some of the signs were old, or not the signs used by the Deaf in my area. I learned a lot more from the courses than I did teaching myself since I got to actually practice with people and see how my receptive skills are, and if I can hold a conversation only using ASL. It's one thing to learn the words, it's another to know how to use them :)

My ASL teacher is deaf. She lost her hearing later in life(high school). She had no interpreters then and used lip reading and her voice to communicate. She learned ASL in college. We her students were surprised to learn she is deaf because she has very good speech having lost her hearing later in life and using her voice on the regular earlier in life. Her name is Tracey Messamer and she is an excellent teacher❤ There are levels to ASL and the testing to become an ASL interpreter or teacher is EXTREMELY HARD. Not impossible but it's not by any means easy; if that's your goal,I dont wish to deter anyone. But teaching ASL isnt as easy as one would think. Many of us speak English as out first language but we cannot properly teach it.

It's honestly good for you to not teach ASL on your channel because there exists (I wouldn't say an abundance or excess but...) sufficient opportunity of ASL learning unlike what you are doing here. WHat you are doing on this platform is so so so amazing in several aspects: 1. I'm biased but being a PNWer it is really awesome to someone from the same area it's just randomly cool and motivating to have some representation of the Deaf community. 2. Continuing the thing about representation of Deaf comm. your videos really (at least in my opinion) "humanised" the Deaf comm. as most people just "know" about the comm. thru their ASL learning or assumptions about disabled ppl or shit like that. Showing your life thru RU-vid really and elevates people's perception of Deaf Comm. from a concept of this group of people that do this funny hand thing to human who are just like the us, the hearing, or really anyone and everyone else. It breaks random subconscious assumptions and biases people have. 3. I'm an ASL 3 student and having a visual "learning" ("" because you are more than just a learning source absolutely love your vids n personality lol) source that's finally not just classroom oriented or some random stimulated real life conversation. Annnnyway. Just wonna say love your vids (yee ik i didn't like any of them ima bish but hey lol) and so very proud of and excited about what you are doing! PS: why did i sound like when you finally reconnect with that overly-"kind" relative you haven't seen in ages lol

I appreciate you being honest about this. Teaching is not that easy and it’s a lot of responsibility 🤗 I love seeing your journey on here. And for your purpose I wouldn’t even be too worried about being 100% “correct” all the time from a prescriptivist point of view. I’m sure there are many ASL resources online both free and paid that were created by actual teachers 🙌 maybe you could do a collab with a professional ASL teacher?

Hi Cheyenna and her fans like me I really love your honest opinions I will respect your choice but what you said its true, if peoples want learn sign languages, classes is best way, BUT some tips i can add i'm deaf guy from Belgium who is interesting learn some ASL and i can tell you: check youtube channel of ' Bill Vicars ' believe me he is GREAT awesome ASL teacher in my opinion Why? He is chill, funny and easy to follow, there is words he is teaching his class on background, he will show first, then his students try do correct, if he notice it is wrong he is honest about it like a qualified teacher BUT also: there is SO many signs for same words, so in fact its hard to learn sign language BUT he always telling this: this sign? Or this? Or this? Of they are correct, then they are correct but also depend on 'context' and what they are talking about can make different signs for one word OR few words transformed into one sign, depend on face mimic and hands fingers like example: i'm gonna sleeping, then you just do sign of 'sleep' maybe peoples can start learn from that channel of Bill Vicars before they take ASL class If those peoples have no knowledge about deaf community and want learn sign language, it could be hard when they take ASL class with no knowledge So my advice, check on youtube for ' basic sign language asl' and if you CAN follow it and try do sign yourself, then it is easier to take ASL class

I took 2 yrs of ASL and have a certificate in it but not qualified to be an interpreter. I have a passion for languages in general but other than English i am not fluent in any....but that doesn't grt rid of the want to make videos on langauges. I feel like if I did that though I'd add links to videos or sites that are actual professionals or native speakers of that language. Also, I just found your channel! You are very pretty and I like what I've seen of your content so far.

very mature answer. Just because I speak English doesn't mean I am qualified to be an English teacher. Like you, I don't know all the grammar "rules". I just know how to use them (most of the time) but if I had to explain how to conjugate a verb or use the dative I would be clueless.

Chey I agree with you. I'm hearing and I learned ASL from my Friends. My JR. High & HS had mainstream program. So I had 6 years learning from them. Then I took 2 ASL classes at my community college. They only had 2 classes. But to be honest I did not learn anything new from the classes. I do better learning ASL from books and my friends. I also pick up signs when I watch youtube (interviews & channels like yours). PS I'm still not 100% fluent.

I think it’s wild that people essentially expect that because you’re a Deaf youtuber, that you would be interested in/have some obligation to teach others ASL???? Like just because someone is Deaf and uses ASL doesn’t make it their obligation to teach you ASL. Deaf people have other interests other than the language they speak.

As a Deaf person, I can say that there are many ASL teachers that thinks they know the proper ways to do this or that in ASL when in reality, they're not doing it correctly themselves. That is when I find out that a lot of the ASL teachers were...hearing. More often than not, most teachers if not all properly trained teachers learned from ... native Deaf signers. Therefore, you are qualified to teach ASL, Cheyenna.

For those of you insisting that Cheyenna teach ASL, here's a suggestion for the people already learning ASL that have gone through a year of studying vocab. Just turn on the closed-captions and set the speed to .25 or .5. You'll be able to see what the meaning of her signs are and give you something to go else where to research. I suggest lifeprint.com or just search Bill Vicars here in youtube.com.
