Drake employs a Jamaican accent when it's convenient for him. So we investigated the origin of his patois.

---------------
The cultural history we’re discussing in this video extends beyond Drake in so many ways that couldn’t fit into this video. So here are some links to further watching / reading to get a better picture of the Caribbean-Canadian connection.
The first is this video by TheNerdwriter1. It focuses on the difference between tropical house and dancehall, with a nice little explainer on the history behind dancehall’s significance in Jamaican culture. • Video
The second resource is in the Statistics Canada website. It’s where I got the map you saw in the video. And it can give you a closer look at the figures I talk about in the video.
www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/89-621-x/89-621-x2007012-eng.htm
Finally, I recommend the culture writing in the FADER, particularly when it focuses on greater Toronto. Here are some of my favorite pieces:
On calling Drake’s music dancehall www.thefader.co...
On the delicate balance between appropriation and appreciation in Greater Toronto

loulouella actually they are correct "one dance" is a dancehall song not afrobeats. Why would anyone call it afrobeats is anyone guess? Maybe because Africans produced the song, and wizkid is featured on it. Sonically it has a dancehall beat and the American music industry can't be fooled. They are already familiar with dancehall beats following decades of dancehall songs on the billboard charts (dancehall artiste I could name but I won't go there). On paper both dancehall and afrobeats genres got credit for the song (I have given my reasons why I think afrobeats genre was given credit) but it's a dancehall song and everyone will call it dancehall except some Africans who may or my not be familiar with real dancehall sound.

He's not speaking patois. There's a distinct dialect in urban Toronto that hybridizes english, patois slang, arabic and somali (but mostly patois), representing the diverse cultural fabric of the city, but it's defintley unique and a product of the migrant patterns of foreign born citizens in the city. Urban London has a similar demographic to Toronto, which is why a lot of the slang is extremely similar. This is why I have trouble saying that Drake is appropriating Jamaican slang. Most people of colour in Toronto speak like this.Toronto urban slang, even though it is strongly influenced by patois, is defintley its own unique dialect. So while we say "wha gwan my yout?" on the daily, terms like "I'm cheesed" or "say wallahi" are a product of a very mixed environment. Idk, it's hard to understand if you're not from Toronto lol. What do ya'll think?

As a Jamaican, Drake's "Jamaican Accent" is one of the worst I've ever heard. Like his last album is a huge joke in Jamaica due to his accent in songs like "No Long Talk." That's not to say he isn't allowed to do what he's doing or anything, his music is still loved here no joke ting, it's just that as a native some of his songs are absolutely unbearable to listen to without laughing yuh rass off.

Weird, because he didn't do any of this until he started ripping off the UK scene. UK hip-hop and grime is heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbeans, particularly patois, and London slang comes a lot from this. Also, Drake got really into UK dancehall and afrobeats. I'm sure this has a little to do with it, but he's mostly picked it up from abroad for sure. No doubt he's also into Jamaican dancehall.

I don't think growing up in Toronto is an excuse to suddenly start to speak like that since he didn't before. Drake grew up around Jamaicans, but that doesn't make him Boi-1da or even Rihanna from Barbados. He's putting it on to fit in and because dance-hall in so in now. His excuse is Toronto's diversity. Most of his upbringing was in the more white area of Toronto anyways. Whatever, he can speak however he wants, I'm not offended or upset, it's just disingenuous to justify his accent like this as well researched as this may be. Drake is arguably a culture vulture.

Your missing the UK connection. London slang is heavily influenced by patois. And its grime and Hip Hop artists use it in full, unashamedly. Drakes been on UK music for a while now and even features some UK artists on his new album (Santan Dave, Giggs, Jorja smith etc.) i dont know if its a good thing, as it almost comes off as him acting like some benevolent higher artist throwing the UK scene a bone. When I think its doing its own thing well with out him. But I can't be mad on behalf of artists like Santan Dave for getting promotion they deserve to have and are probably buzzing to get. Edit: I'm well aware Toronto slang has been using Patois for a long time (it was in the very video this comment section is under lol) my point is that the UK scene has clearly inspired drake to be a bit more true to his Toronto roots in his vocab. And if you don't like that then cry more. Doesn't mean its not true. Also check out Tre Mission, A great Toronto Grime artist.

The high school he went to, Vaughan Academy, (around the corner from me) is in the middle of a Caribbean neighbourhood, some call Little Jamaica or Eglinton/Oakwood or Vaughan/Oakwood or simply Eglinton. Most youth .. regardless of colour or background in my neighbourhood (and many kids across the city) speak using slang that is heavily influenced not only by Jamaican patois but from lots of West Indian countries/regions. Many kids with African/Italian/Portuguese/South Asian/Asian and various European roots share the same language. In addition to the neighbourhoods of Scarborough and Weston mentioned in the video there are also neighbourhoods like Rexdale, Regent Park and Jane and Finch which have a lot of Caribbean people living there. With a few exceptions most neighbourhoods in our city are very multicultural and we like it that way. Most kids grow up without segregation and are hanging out at each other's houses, eating each other's mom's food and being exposed to each other's culture. You should come and visit and you'll have a better understanding of how commonplace it is for music from Toronto to be infused with all kinds of culture. He's not a poser he's just from T Dot and "That's how we stay."

Saying “that’s how people from Toronto speak” removes the origins and the fact that it’s because of the Jamaican immigrants. the video really didn't explain this topic at all. it completely slipped the part that actually matters. it's more than there just being a lot of Jamaicans in Toronto. it's that that population has influenced urban youth culture and the dialect and slang that they speak, almost regardless of ethnicity. A similar thing exists in London England. the way of speaking is more common to Scarborough and the other places another commenter mentioned. so drake is trying to ham up that connection when he speaks like this. there's also the connection to the British grime scene which is also a factor that the video didn't cover at all that other commenters mentioned.

Drake and a lot of hip hop artists are influenced by the Jamaican culture. From listening to music Bob Marley and the Wailers to Sean Paul and etc, they realized that the culture and dialect is very unique. With the latter, leaving others who hear it (especially in person) mystified and wanting to understand and hear more. This is why most hip-hop songs with the dialect has such an appeal. So for those in the comment section saying "it is just a city/Toronto thing", the correct thing to say is "It is just a city/Toronto thing influenced by the Jamaican culture". Otherwise, where would it have come from?

I noticed people from England also seem to use a lot of Jamaican terms such as "wagwan". I saw a Toronto man say that as well. I am not Jamaican but I think i have heard the term "wagwan" in their music or something. Idk how I knew it was Jamaican, I guess it just sounds like it.

Thank you for covering the truth about this. I was skeptical an American company would know the truth. Much of the Toronto slang that I grew up with derives from Jamaican culture. That's just the slang people used in high school. BTW it seems odd but many kids grew up listening to reggae artists like Vybz Kartel, Movado.. so the Popcaan connection seemed organic to us.

Drake is taking advantage of a convenient cultural cache - 98 singles and 4 albums in and you're JUST NOW speaking with an accent?
