CoCo Chanel did so much more then just a little black dress, she started a revolution that got woman out of corsets and into wearing practical simple clothing. She also created a lot of work clothes for woman during world war 1 she disliked the fact that men dictated what women should wear since beforehand all French designers were men. She created the 1920’s look of simple silhouettes. The history of coco is actually really interesting she did a lot in her life some that even now is scandalous but when it comes to fashion her lines core value was so much more then being a “tan woman in a little black dress”.

She also stole what made her famous from Jews she turned over to the Nazis (spoiler they were killed) and then helped out by spying for the SS, so the next time a witty one liner about a famous person in a video thats only 2 minutes long and is looking only to give a quick sumamry, gets you triggered because they dared not to speak their whole biography, thus prompting you to go on this needless rant about the life on a really bad famous person, don't leave out the parts that aren't "aesthetic" to you.

So the next time you see me praising Ghandi or mother Teresa or some American pop star, feel free to criticise me for glorifying them and ignoring the bad things they've done. But since you're clearly implying that I've failed to follow my own rules, aka: you're implying I am fasly deifying someone in an attempt to attack a short youtube video I felt didn't rightly praise said celebrity, please tell me where I've done this.

Personally I like french fashion because it isn’t about looking perfect. IMO French women embrace their little imperfections, and exude confidence. I think that’s ultimately what makes them so desirable.

Actually that's not totally true, i think that most of the french women are less confident than american women, but wathever they won't wear tons of make up to cover their imperfection because they think it's trashy and unnatural. But that's true that they care a lot about being pretty wich is why they will eat healthy
@luckyDancer100
@luckyDancer100 6 лет назад
lee a I should clarify by saying that the ideal image of french women is confidence. People always feel some level of insecurity. This isn’t limited to culture; it’s often just human nature. But the french, on the surface level, present themselves as confident. This is the image presented on magazine covers, and gives them that certain undefinable, unattainable quality. They wear their hair natural, their lips red and look like fashion icons.

I'm a history student and actually, the obsession with french "mode" (fashion) already occurred in the middle ages. For example, there was this one style called "mid-partie" from the french. It wasn't just clothing fashion that was imported from france, but also architecture (eg baroque architecture) and language (hence why the german and english language have a lot of words with french origin). Today the english language is the standard first language, back then it was french. This trend of viewing france as the pinpoint of fashion has not really died out until the 1900, where this video starts off.

BlueSkies11 If you want to have a beautiful style just wear what you want, that’s probably why you like the French\ Belgian style it’s because those women are free to wear what they want and they know it so they just choose what make them beautiful, not what make the others beautiful. But remember one things, your beautiful only if you think you are, not if the others thinks you are, be yourself.

I agree we Ryuu, smoking is receding in younger generations in France. A lot. Although lower classes are shown to have increased their cigarette consumption, sadly. If you want to check, TF1 and M6 made whole segments out of it after a study was published, by the INSEE I believe (not sure though). If you're in an area with a lower general income, it's possible people might smoke more.
@frog7195

@ileanor1863
@ileanor1863 6 лет назад
I think most teenagers try it and such but most of my friends who began smoking already quit around 18/19. Same for me, I began smoking around 15, but I've pretty much stopped unless I'm seeing friends (18 now). There is a smoking culture, but it's more publicised internationally than in other countries I believe, and there's less stigma around it. But since the prices went up, lots of younger people have said they'll stop, at least where I live. So since they've risen, usage will probably decease in low income areas as well, perhaps.

Yall just have selective hearing and hate anything that has to do with being socially aware. Yall the type of people to label everything as “sjw”. Just say yall hate being educated and made aware of the issues women face and go. (Btw it is sexist to expect women to look effortlessly beautiful 24/7 and not show the hard work she had to go through to achieve that beauty. Its basically implying that a woman’s job is to be pretty, but TRYING to be pretty deserves social repercussions.)

The CONCEPT of French style (similar to how British Kate Moss actually dresses) is better than real French (street) style in my opinion. In Paris too many of the women look haggard and disheveled. There is "effortless" and then this is just plain gray and sickly. Very few women I saw on the metro or even on the Champ Elyse looked chic or lively.
@mlleauboise10
@mlleauboise10 6 лет назад
I've lived in both countries, and I think people do dress nicer on a daily basis in France. They do make more effort everyday. But it's as a general fact. Whereas in America for example, people have an amazing mix between "sneakers sweatpants hoodie everyday" and dressing very nicely. The thing is, in France, people tend to conform more to what's in in our country at the moment, and people take care as to not stand out. French people are judgemental about appearances. Black and neutral colors are a staple in this country. I think you're not being quite fair here, as I've seen many more "disheveled and haggard" looking people in America. But again, this is influenced so much by which area you look at that you can't say Americans "wear this or look like that". There is such astronomical discrepancies between households economically, and geographically. Someone in New York City might look at the top of the fashion game whereas someone living in a small town in the country might just not care.
@mlleauboise10
@mlleauboise10 6 лет назад
I do agree with you though that how Americans see French style has nothing to do with how it actually is. There is a whole fantasy about it. Not all French girls are classy and naturally beautiful, just as not every American girl is fat (which is often pointed by French for Americans). Those are stereotypes.

Depends on where in France. Last fall when I was in Paris I was amused by how 40% of girls wear a blue jean jacket and black jeans, and 40% of them wear black leather jacket with blue jeans, and the rest dressed differently. In Marseille people dressed a bit more diverse and polished This is just my observation from my one month in France last year

But sexism isn't unique to French girls... as a French girl I feel like it's a matter of interpretation. You didn't really explain how or why it's rooted in sexism either. The stereotype of the effortless, stylish French girl in my view is more about women embracing their imperfections, self care (obsession with skin care and socialising) and exuding confidence. And it's true that obesity is much lower in France than it is in America, we are one of the slimmest countries in Europe. Because to us, healthy eating practises, quality meat and produce, regular meals. As well as taking time to enjoy your food, which is basically self care. We have longer lunch breaks and snack a lot less for example. I don't see why we can't be proud of that, everyone knows it's not healthy to be fat. Except for Americans clearly, who are so offended when you mention weight loss lol.
@CT1010101
@CT1010101 2 года назад
The sexism in the stereotype stems from the idea that French women must be beautiful & sexy and pretend they are that way at all times with zero effort. That a "normal" woman is a gorgeous one. And that anyone who doesn't fit that is lesser. And that she just pretend her gorgeousness requires no effort, because she is just naturally phenomenal. She doesn't wear makeup bc she's beautiful. She doesn't go to the gym bc she's naturally thin. She doesn't wear spray tan bc her skin is naturally golden. Men are not held to these standards. Men's worth is not tied inextricably to their physical appearance. An ugly wealthy man is just a wealthy man. An ugly wealthy woman is an ugly woman. There's a double standard and a societal reinforcement of this. Women reinforce it as do men. And by buying into the effortless "French woman" stereotype we buy into this sexism that says a woman's worth comes from her appearance but she must be naturally gorgeous, or else she is less. She is tacky or even, gasp, American.

You're judged pretty harshly if you wear too much makeup in France, people will not hesitate to point it out to you immediately, so you see it mostly in Sephora or Mac stores for example. They tend to tell you "it's unnatural" and that you don't need it to be pretty. It's looked down upon because it's thought to be for the wrong reasons (like pleasing people and stuff). It's a general conception though, as some people don't care.
@Betdl
@Betdl 6 лет назад
Well, as a french girl, I can tell you that fake lashes are really rare. People wear them mostly for special occasion but not on an everyday basis (I've never seen it at least). But the trend of eyelash extensions is rising I guess. And we do wear full face of make-up (foundation, concealer, powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick and mascara) but not everyone and not everyday. We may skip one or more product or add one or more. There's no "rule" about how you should look, usually, I feel like people don't really care. Even if, in some places, having too much make-up can lead to judgmental gaze.

The problem with stereotypes is that they don't evolve with time. So - if you must know- a recent study by the BEH has shown that young French women/teenagers are not "mince" but "maigre" (which is basically unhealthy thin). So there is the beginning of a really big health issue because we are talking about one young woman out of five, and if you aspire to be that then I won't stop you but just know you are putting your health on the line. And obesity is growing in poor households too. Please stop fetishizing my country.

There's a huge blind spot in your analysis imho. The main issue with 'french girl' as an archetype is in how it erases the diversity of french women: it only represents upper middle class Parisian white girls. You rarely ever see black, arab or asian women embodying this and yet we're here we're french and we're part of the fashion world too.

S Lena because this video is about the history of "the French girl" Arabs, Asians werent around at the time, afaik African women wer but they were too small a minority (late 1800's/ early 1900's)

Pillsbury dope girl sorry that what's considered beautiful in white/European countries is... European? Idk why Europeans would care about other beauty standards when they could just adhere to their own. Do you expect Europeans to hold to Asian beauty standards? Or South American beauty standards? No because that's stupid.

French girl here. That pretty much sums it up. Don't try too hard and throw that beret hat away it's so generic . The sexism aspect is kinda relevant although there are multiple ways to exude that French touch without having it embroided into patriarchy. Embrace the flaws and have some class and mystery about you.

First, Marianne Faithful is not French, second, not everyone smokes in France... And then... What you're saying is paradoxical: how is the idea of being effortlessly beautiful and not wanting to wear make-up, sexist? I would tend to think that it is in fact putting on too much makeup to always cover up what we don't like about ourselves instead of accepting our natural physique that encourages sexism... Please, at least get your facts straight, have a nice day, though :) Thank you

DiLayla D some people do make up for fun and it’s not just women who do makeup and because of that it kind of breaks the social standards of sexism. Just wanted to point that out❤️

Sue * You're right, my comment wasn't complete :) Although I am not criticising people who like to wear makeup, it is still my opinion that *too much* makeup is not alright, for exemple when you do it for the wrong reasons (trying to follow a standard or trend that is not you, or listening to the bullies, or others who shouldn't have a say in how you present yourself, etc...) And don't worry, my boyfriend wears makeup (he loves eyeliner) and no one would dare question the fact that he is a man (I'm pretty proud of him, by the way, for not giving in to peer pressure, so you won't get any sexist comment coming from me) Besides I myself love to try different things and I LOVE experimenting with makeup :) And don't worry, in my previous comment I used "we", therefore I made sure to include everyone, male, female or other 🖒 Have a beautiful day! And thank you for pointing out what I forgot to mention in such a sweet way! ❤ Love from France!

DiLayla D, I agree. I don't think "looking effortlessly beautiful" is necessarily sexist, in itself. In fact, it is related to a similar concept from the Renaissance Italian courts called "sprezzatura". This was a recommend way of acting for MALE courtiers, which emphasized a similar approach of "hiding the work", so to speak.
@adorkable7196
@adorkable7196 6 лет назад
I'm not sure you even watched the video you are criticizing. Never did she say everyone in France smoked what she was listing is this idea that the fashion world HAS of a french girl, not facts cause in the end of the day there is no such a thing as a "french girl style" cause there is a vast variety of french girls which additionally will vary from city to city. SHe even explained WHY it was sexist. As it has nothing to do with what women want to do but how they are percived. Nothing about the french girl style is effortless, if you have to calculate HOW to be effortless. The idea is sexist because there is this underlying notion that women should look perfect but not try, very similar to the notion that women should be pretty and smart but not too smart. Ultimately watching and listening carefully to the video would cleared up your own misunderstanding. Instead you jumped to conclusions

French girls are free and happy. That's because of French culture and French society being very liberal and secular. They call it laïcité. They're very progressive, and that's why French girls have all the freedom to express themselves.

Great video and montage! Btw, the secret of French girls not being fat is to chew and take time (like 1 or 2 hours) for lunch and dinners. Not all the French women smoke, or are slim, anyway.

Maggie Mateu think she means women HAVE TO BE attractive, that's their purpose. They should be the French girl = pretty with no makeup, have an appetite but doesn't gain weight, well dressed 24/7 witouth being narcissistic etc etc

Yes it does? Observers argue that French girls are always skinny and beautiful without any effort which puts pressure on women that they're supposed to be always skinny and beautiful without it being a big deal - even though it is time consuming and not effortless. However, man don't have to deal with this.

El Lobo When she literally says "It's about being beautiful without having to try" and right after "but it's rooted in sexism. It's the idea that women should be attractive at all cost, but without ever showing how hard she worked to get that way" it makes no sense, because it means one thing and the opposite : to be beautiful *without having to try* you don't have to *work hard to get that way* because you do it effortlessly . It's about natural beauty, embracing your body I think. Then it looks more like feminism.
