Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most highly rated managers in world football and linked to huge clubs like Real Madrid and Chelsea, despite being controversially sacked by Bayern Munich. In this video, Jon Mackenzie explains how the German achieved all of this by the age of 35, explores what his tactical philosophy actually is, and looks at just what exactly makes him such a great coach.

As a Bayern fan, I’d say his best quality was the ability to make in-game adjustments that could win the match. This might be a bit too Germany-centered for Tifo, but it's still an interesting topic: the DFB (German Football Association) is changing the rules on how to qualify for the highest coaching licenses (tldr: they become more expensive and there is a point system that favours Bundesliga ex-players). With this new system someone like Julian Nagelsmann might never gotten the opportunity to qualify for coaching licenses at the highest level. Wondering how this will change the coaching landscape in Germany, as it becomes very hard, if not impossible, for coaches at smaller clubs or youth levels to work their way up.

Wow. When license & price of something goes up, you know we are moving towards automation. When car prices goes up, the automated public transportation is the replacement. When art prices goes up, AI generated images become the replacement. And when AI can already beat chess & online game champions, who knows if they are going to replace football coaches next. Edit: Knowing German people & their love for efficiency & automation, no wonder if they are at the forefront of pushing the automation of football game. When other aspects such as tactical analysis & physical performance already automated by AI and easily publicly accessible, one of the way to keep coach job competitive & still valuable is to increase the price of coaching license. To me this all make sense.

@@blaquenguni9249 I think too much is made of winning the CL. It is the most prestigious trophy at club level - but much like the world cup (which is the most prestigious trophy in all of football) - there is alot of luck involved. In league football, the best team almost always wins, since results are spread over 38 games. But knockout football has so much unpredictability, and all it needs is one bad day for the team or a poor refereeing decision to end a run. Just look at Leicester winning the FA cup 2 years ago. Leicester were good - but no one is gonna say they are a better team than Chelsea, City or Utd that year. But they rode their luck and grit and won. If a Super League sort of football ever materializes, it will be a far more accurate indicator of thr strength of the top clubs across europe.

Definitely too soon. He should have stayed in Leipzig. Might have even managed to win the league title with them. Just imagine: being the first coach to win the league title in the history of a given team. How many people get a realistic chance of pulling that off? Claudio Ranieri did it with Leicester in 2016, but I'd argue you can't even call that a "realistic chance", for how miraculous and completely bonkers that Premier League season went. And now compare that to being the who-the-hell-knows-what-number-th coach to win the title with Bayern Munich. (Seriously: does anyone know off the top of their head how many different coaches won the league title with Bayern?)

I think it would also be too soon for Chelsea (given that they sack managers often) or Tottenham (Levy is an expert at wasting good managers). Liverpool would be ideal if they sack Klöpp at the end of the season, as they have proved they have patience to rebuild.

He was under heavy scrutiny but had managed a perfect CL campaign so far and was only 6 points behind last season's result at this time as well as only 1 point behind Dortmund this season. It is definitely more of a personal thing against his off field stuff rather than his results.

It's both. Some German pundits believe that the youthful, rollerblading look wasn't what was expected from a Bayern manager. He's made outspoken comments after some matches which have shown his immaturity. He wasn't as close to the finished article as Bayern would've expected at this stage. The mole has been around for some time. Guardiola was complaining about it so it limits the no of players it could be........ As for JN's girlfriend, Bayern knew that she was BM expert at Bild and should've asked for her to leave as it represented a conflict of interests. She only left her position, but stayed at Bild. Even if she had nothing to do with it, players are naturally going to be wary of saying things in the dressing room knowing that it could go to Bild.

just a quick heads-up: for the league placement chart around 1:30, you're showing the Bundesliga going down the 20th position. There's only 18 teams in the league though, so that makes it slightly disleading, especially considering just how close to relegation (16th spot) the 15th place really is

@pozsoz
@pozsoz Год назад
This season for Bayern in the Bundesliga was crazy, I thought Jon "Underlying Numbers" Mackenzie would have noticed some weird stats. For example, having the biggest goal difference with both the best defense and attack, and at the same time not having the most wins, nor the most clean sheets. Defensively there were many ties that came from last minute fouls, handballs, and so on, I think the weak spot in Nagelsmann's tactics was going for that 3-1-5-1 that often left defenders hugely exposed and playing lots of 1v1 that led to silly mistakes and conceding goals which probably shouldn't have happened. I don't know if it was the right move to sack him but there were dressing room issues and it is said many players didn't really respect him, which is important in big clubs with players and directives with big personalities. I don't think Tuchel is very different tactically but he is certainly more conservative and a bit more defensive.

Even now, Chelsea was dominating in their last 5 games chance wise and even more on the Liverpool game. The problem is some players that got most scoring opportunities didn't score. They need to address this more than the tactics for now. They need to addres Harvertz, Felix, Kova, Kante scoring techniques individually for each of them especially Harvertz and Felix they both have big flaw on their scoring technique and mindset on these scoring situations.

@@insertname8451 yeah Felix always in drible stance which is great for opening up play but he needs to practice when to switch to proper stance to shoot. Prime Hazard is a good example of a player who knows how to do both. Also he's scared to shoot when there's a defender coming which is a bad habit and mindset that can be trained and eliminate. Kai is the same, he's scared, he's better at his shooting stance but he lack power on his shot because his stance is always going for placement but this makes it easy for goalkeeper time and time again. Lacking conviction. I don't know what they do in training but they need to be addressed individually and told and coached right in their face to better this scoring techniques. If Chelsea could create as many chances as the last 5 games while fixing this scoring problems. Chelsea would win games with lots of goals.

One thing worth mentioning here to provide some context for his dissatisfaction with Bayern's performances and the frequent tactical tweaks, is that he mainly had to do this because the club failed to address a number of vital gaps in the squad. At the bare minimum they needed a replacement for Lewandowski and a pivot player who is good at defending defensive transitions. On top of that, Thiago had never been properly replaced and it seems that Gnabry as well as Sane are now better in slightly more central areas, which means that a further winger with similar qualities to Coman was needed. However, even if they had only brought in a defensive midfielder and a striker to replace Lewandowski, I don't think Bayern would've had as many problems. Ultimately, the Bayern management was lucky to have Nagelsmann who was able to come up with solutions to problems created by gaps in the squad. But those solutions couldn't solve the underlying problems. That isn't to say Nagelsmann isn't without faults or hasn't made some mistakes, who doesn't, but I don't think this level of constant tweaking is something he necessarily thrives to do. As broadly hinted at in the video, it merely means that he is actually capable of coming up with wide variety of tactical solutions and as such, is capable of working with all kinds of different squad and player profiles.

I think his style is similar to Pep in how he wants his teams to control the match through possession and not just attack mindlessly

The decision was very very unpopular with the fans and came out of nowhere. if Bayern get kicked out of the CL now, it could very well be that the board is sacked by the members. As a member, I would. The elite clubs like Bayern, Real Madrid .and usually Barcelona are a meritocracy as much as they are about passion & love for the club. You have to love the club and perform at the highest level. One of the two isn't good enough. Nagelsmann did.

I think the point on Nagelsmann's sacking was missed entirely. The 2nd half was a desaster in both seasons at Bayern. Just look how they crashed out of the cup against Gladbach or against Sevilla and them losing a 9 points lead this spring. All indicators, CL against PSG aside, pointed to another crash and while the timing sure was bollocks, it's utter bullshit to point at the loss against Leverkusen and claim it was the sole reason. Also in this video the fact that Nagelsmann has no clear cut longterm system, caused frustration and confusion within the locker room as we know from Lewandowski himself. Him being flexible isnt always benefiting the team.

He’s not who everyone thinks he is. It’s like those players who aren’t acc good. Like the idea of Olise or Jude is better than reality. Simply ask Leipzig or Bayern fans. He’s pretty flawed. But hey he’s “young and attack minded”
@fishyfish6510
@fishyfish6510 Год назад
My friends who are Bayern fans are upset that he got sacked despite having a great UCL run. Also if Leipzig fans don't like him then they're spoiled brats. Most teenagers are older than that club so for them to even qualify for Champions League let alone made it to the semifinal in 2020 is groundbreaking
