Great video - galleries are prestigious to be in, but often cost a fortune, and as you say the artist does not make much money. There needs to be a different model for future galleries, where the artist either pays for wall space or commission on painting sales, not both!

Yeah. I've only displayed in my friends coffee shops. I was in my schools local gallery a couple of times. In which they take less of a cut because you're a student. Unfortunately my gallery receptions keep bombing from things like bad family dynamics or the covid lockdown. My friends no longer want to display art in their shops though now, which really sucks. I had thought about doing a kickstarter but don't know how well that would work for originals. I think prints would work but the originals might be more tricky. I still really value an actual gallery space though. Especially a coffee shop because then you have a lot of natural foot traffic. And your work is actually experienced in person rather than on a screen. I think the reason galleries have died is because they just rip off the artist and then you tend to only get kitch work which makes people not really want to come to the galleries because they're not really getting anything out of it. I try and only make gallery work that really makes the viewer have a genuine moment with so that it's worth their time to spend time with the piece. I produce a lot less as a result but so far I really like all my paintings and get a good response for them. I just need a new wall that's not going to rob me.
