In this video, I'm focusing on creating a subtractive synth with several randomly changing features and effects, polymetric ping-pong playback, and euclidean sequencing. I'm using firmware 4.0.

Great video thanks. I've been playing around with this kind of thing on the deluge and what I notice is that I can listen to a simple randomised loop on repeat for so much longer than a regular loop. The way they change and evolve just delights the ears.

We all have instinctive favourites in rhythm and melody which can lead even the most inspired musician to become set in their ways. Anything which trips us out of our comfort zone has got to be good for broadening our perspective on creativity IMHO. One interesting development from looking back on music fabricated this way might be to look for snapshots within the generated strings and splicing samples that sound pleasing for future stepping stones to music.

Exactly! Resampling a randomly generated phrase can be a great starting point for a new song. I also think there's something to be said about just listening to these generative loops for a while and seeing which melodies stick with you. Thanks for watching and for your thoughtful comment.

Another great one! Really inspiring and well paced and explained 🙂 For the stuff that can't be tied to random or LFOs like the decimation on your hihat, you can try hitting record and wiggling the knob to record some automation into your sequence, then maybe set the length for the hihat pattern to an odd number of beats so it repeats in a way that's different each time.

I love your videos, however, the white screens in between are very bright. I'd recommend a light font and a dark background. But besides that, I learn a lot from your videos :)

Basically, you could put all notes on the first position... they will sound together the first time but then never again... Then you can work in 1 bar I Put a C E G together for example on 1 spot.... everything within the scale. Nice video ;)

Thanks! I might in the future, but I'm quite happy with this version and screen. I like how the simple interface forces me to rely on my ears more, so I don't feel like it's urgent or would change much if I got the oled.

Cool. What an amazing machine we have. What would be the easiest way to then introduce a key change but retain all the same parameters? Could that also be randomized somehow, within sensible musical rules like 3rds or 5ths?

Good question! You can very easily copy tracks by pressing on them and simultaneously pressing an empty track. That could be your starting point, and then you'll just need to move a few notes around in the copies version. Have fun!

I do have one question (at least :) is it possible to save the instruments you've taught us how to make so that we can open them up and play them in/on other 'Songs' ?

Yes! While in the Clip (instrument track), hold and press Save and press Synth. Name your instrument, and that's it. It will persist into other projects, and you can turn the Deluge off and it will still be there when you start it back up :)

Great video. When you tie the parameters of a single note all to the random modulator does each parameter in that note get the same value or is each modulation a different random value all generated at the same time?

Thanks for watching! I honestly don't know, I should look into this. It's probably the same value in the same clip, but different across different clips, like LFOs, but that's just me guessing.

From the Deluge manual: "X and Y: MIDI MPE support will be added in a future Deluge firmware update. These modulation sources refer to the horizontal and vertical sideways pressure which a user of an MPE-compatible MIDI controller may apply to each key with the finger pressing it."

Actually, note-probability is not per se generative, it does not generate anything. Generative is something that generates new things, like new sequence.

Fair enough, but we're getting into semantics - a sequence that is impossible to predict and ever-changing, using sounds that are randomly generated and modulated is close enough where I feel like it warrants the use of the word Generative. Thanks for watching and for keeping us honest! :)

Thanks! That's a tough nut to crack, but what I tend to do is experiment with the bass; you can keep most other things the same, and try to change the bass progression, and if that starts to sound good, you link it back to the original bassline and boom: now you have a second section to build on. Blues progressions could be worth exploring too. Have fun!
