Welcome back to another installment of The (unofficial) Deluge Video Manual, where I'll be showing you all I know about using the Synthstrom Deluge (firmware version 4.0)! In this video, we're diving deep into the sampling engine on the Deluge, and showing off nearly all it has to offer. We're really getting into the thick of things with this one, so let's start the sample madness!

A correction needs to be made about what I say at 20:55 ! It turns out you can edit the polyphony, sample mode, reverse, speed, and pitch/speed settings to the entire kit at once! Just select one of these parameters and hold "Affect Entire" while turning the select knob to edit the value. Sorry about the misinformation there. You can gain early acess to the next video in this series by signing up to my Patreon, along with other sweet perks! www.patreon.com/RSKT_all

Thanks for the kind words! I'm still amazed by it too to be honest. Funny you say that about the Synth Dawg manual. I've had a look at the old manaul before but I actually find Synth Dawg did an excellent job on the manual overall. I think his manual for the Empress Effects Zoia pedal is probably the best Zoia guide out there too, but at the end of the day everyone has a different way of learning I guess. Hopefully these videos work for people who find both manuals confusing haha.

Another great deluge video! Enjoyed the lofi loop that you made, music tutorials are much more enjoyable when the demos are musical :) One trick to cut down on buzzing or clicking on samples with a repeating section is to zoom in super far, until you can see single lines of the wave form. Adjust the loop begin and repeat points so that they are at the same level, going in the same direction (I usually make both going up, crossing the midpoint). If they are at different levels, and there is a jump, it is like a square wave at that point, adding higher harmonics that give buzz and clicking sounds. It's a bit of messing around, but if you are trying to capture a particular sound, can be worth it
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
Thanks so much for the kind words and the advice about looping samples. That makes a lot of sense to be honest, so I'm going to be using that more from now on :) These videos are definately pretty devoid of music haha. Hopefully when I launch the "workflow" series, there'll be a lot more music and fun involved :)

@RSKT_music

Not sure about the phantastic bass, but you can get tonnes of free multisamples from the Synthstrom forum, as well as the public Deluge Discord server. Hope that helps :)

@RSKT, maybe you can help me understand this. (But first, THANK YOU for these amazing videos) How do you (if at all), manage the problem where the sample you load as a synth (your kick in your example), but the original sample is, say, a A#, but it gets loaded into, say, a C ‘slot’ for the root note. Wouldn’t it then completely mess up the scales throughout, for that track? Are you literally pitching the sample up or down to match it’s root note slot or something? I feel like this is a sampling 101 I should already know.
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
No problem! From memory, the Deluge tries to recognise the pitch of the sample so that it's loaded into the correct slot. (There's a section on this in the manual somewhere I think). But either way, if it doesn't work then yeah, I'm just manually pitching the sample up or down. You can use the custom1 knob for this, or the transpose setting for the first oscillator. :)

Hey RSKT, I'm still coming back to your tutorials, as i finally have more time and inspiration to make music with the Deluge. Is it possible for you to share your vocals folder ? Because it looks really interesting and inspiring
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music 11 месяцев назад
Hey there! So the vocals in here are from some crappy public domain websites I scoured ages ago. I can't even remember what they were called and there's no text info in the packs to let you know where they were from. These were pulled from a couple of websites that just had a bunch of random vocals slapped in a pack. I just searched for "free vocal sample packs" and got a list of them. I'm sorry I'm not more help. For what it's worth, most of the vocal samples in here aren't particularly great. You'd probably be better off going with a large paid option.
@TheLordTimi
@TheLordTimi 11 месяцев назад
@@RSKT_music ok, i guess it's time to go digging 🙂 Also, are you still thinking about doing a series of workflow tutorials ?
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music 11 месяцев назад
@@TheLordTimi oooo boy! I sure am. Time has not. Been my greatest friend lately. I'm waiting for work to die down a little (should be next month) so I can smash out a tonne of filming, and I'm hoping to include the workflow series within that. I've also got plans to release 2 more episodes of the video manual too, but need to sit down and research a couple of things so it's accurate. Either way, at this stage the Deluge isn't going anywhere, so don't stress. It will return as a foul point again before the year is out (hopefully).
@TheLordTimi
@TheLordTimi 11 месяцев назад
@@RSKT_music that is great news ! I know you love your Deluge and you aren't going to forget it but i was afraid the series would be too much time-consuming to produce, also considering you already put a lot of time in the making of the unofficial manual. But i'm glad to know that it's coming before the end of the year ! I'll be patient (while experimenting on my own in the same time) even though i "can't wait" to see that 😁 Cheers !

Hey there! I'm trying to recreate your problem but can't seem to be able to. Can you walk me through exactly what you're doing? Although I'm not sure if it matters, how long is the audio file you're trying to do it to? If I'm unable to help, it might be worth posting this to the FB group, Synthstrom Forums, or the Discord channel. Sorry I'm not much more help at this stage.

23:10 can you do this per step? Not changing the global pitch of the actual sample but just on one step
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
You can. Custom 1 is mapped to pitch automatically with samples, so you can use that to automate pitch and parameter lock it.
@SiychMusique
@SiychMusique Год назад
@@RSKT_music thank you! Is this also able to be quantised to semitones etc?
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
@@SiychMusique You set the quantisation in the settings (there's a few options there) , but only applies to things you live record in and you can't edit the quantisation of that recording afterwards (unless you do it manually). But you can add in different semitones to the sequencer if you want.

how are you so good at this device?! i am to get my unit around 2-3 weeks from now.. im feeling a bit intimidated now...
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
Honestly? I don't think I'm THAT good at it. I think a lot of my knowledge stems from the fact that I don't have many other pieces of gear to get distracted with, other than my Zoia pedal and Ableton (which shares a very similar workflow). There's a lot of things in this manual that I don't use all that often, but I'm trying to cover almost all that I can. The plan is to launch a new series after this one that focuses more on different workflows, tips, and tricks. I wanted this video manual to be in place first so that if people struggle with certain concepts, they can reference back to these videos to help brush up on things they may not fully understand. I think the workflow videos are going to be a lot more fun to follow along with, and also be a lot more musical too. Either way, don't be intimidated. The Deluge is just like learning a stripped back version of Ableton, and you'll probably find yourself using only about half of it's features at any given time. The important part is to have fun while doing it! :)

I wish the speed control has more precision. Ideally in hundredths. It seemed to be too course an adjustment for me.
@RSKT_music
@RSKT_music Год назад
I kind of feel the same way with a lot of other things. Some finer detail on the envelopes would be really nice, but it is what it is. I'm not sure if this will work with the speed control (you can give it a go though), but I tend to map parts of the envelopes to LFO's for snappier control. For example, when making a percussion sound, a super snappy decay is sometimes needed, but setting the decay to 1 sometimes feels even a bit too long. So mapping decay to LFO2 and and then changing the LFO rate can sometimes help with that.

I'm not trying to be negative here, but I am genuinely so baffled by this comment. What was unusable about it? You literally put sounds onto an SD card, plug it in, and then load them. It couldn't be any simpler. Genuinely interested to hear more about what made this so difficult for you.

@@williamwallace6508 Ahhh I see. Yeah I do recall talking to someone on reddit about this very issue. Seems to have a limit with the mulitisamples, and you have to be very specific for what you can load into it. Still, I wouldn't say that makes it unusable.
