If I’m being honest, as a younger fan of Godzilla I’m mostly excited for Minus One because it is the first time I have ever had the opportunity to watch a Toho Godzilla movie in theaters. It looks great, but I can’t deny that that is the main reason I’m going.

Godzilla Minus One is incredible. Can't believe it only cost 16M to make. Godzilla is like this rampaging angry injured animal that does not have peace. His war is never over. For a split second I thought they were breaking the rules of Godzilla and he was eating people. But then he shows that he has no care whatsoever to eat someone and only wants to kill people and destroy stuff. And if there was any doubt he shows it again. Beautiful, horrible destruction. He is so bloodthirsty that he doesn't think and is hyper focused at times. There is no marvel move bullcrap. No annoying comedy relief sidekick. No string of quippy one liners during action sequences. No one sided politically motivated preaching. Just the undeniable truth that war is a totally horrible thing and all lives matter. No one is disposable. It is the best anti war movie I could imagine where not a single person is shown killing another.

Saw it last night myself. I had high expectations and man did it live up to them. Not only did the movie have an engaging and empathetic cast of characters it also had a really amazing and dramatic story too. The part that impressed me the most is how Godzilla was primary to the main character’s story and motivations rather than a random obstacle or disaster. The relationship between the main character and Godzilla is what takes center stage and it’s perfect. Everything and everyone felt like they mattered unlike the new monsterverse films with their cringe marvel humor and pointless forgettable characters that only exist to pad out the runtime. The only resemblance this film has to Shin Godzilla is that it’s dark tonally and Godzilla is actually genuinely scary. If anything it’s much more like the original 1954 Godzilla movie. The effects, fight scenes and destruction are also amazing. Godzilla’s atomic breath in this film almost made me piss myself it was so damn cool. I’d say that Minus One is how you perfectly balance a destructive monster movie with a emotional character driven one. 10/10 I hope you watch it and let me know what you think because it’s honestly tied with Shin Godzilla for my favorite Godzilla movie ever now. Hell I’m gonna go see it a few more times because it’s actually phenomenal.
@say5070

Glad you saw the film and commented on it.(Spoilers ahead) I saw it last night and I fully agree. The one thing I didn't like was that Godzilla's walk was stiffer than stale bread. I think the creator here might not like that Godzilla isn't much of a character either but thats another issue. I was with my girlfriend and i said the real trick to a Godzilla movie is to keep the audience engaged when Godzilla isn't on the screen and the story without him was excellent and really benefitted from being set post WWII. I liked that they skipped time to keep things moving but also still let the plot bake without feeling rushed. A key thing you pointed out was was Shikishima's relationship to Godzilla and how Godzilla affected his life. *Chef's kiss* The film didn't shy away from Godzilla needing to be stopped because he was a monster but he was also the main character's personal monster. I also loved how the battle was against the people of the city and not the government. it's a regular thing in these films for it to be a social commentary on the government and this was still that, but they didn't make i about a bunch of meetings and conferences. the people just banded together and did it themselves because they could not rely on their government.
@CYB3RxPRO
@CYB3RxPRO 10 месяцев назад
@@say5070 I’d have to say I personally disagree with your opinion on how Godzilla really isn’t much of a character in this movie. To me it’s the opposite, almost harkening back to GMK this Godzilla feels not just annoyed but almost malicious. Taking its time to hunt down the human vermin in its territory and destroy as much as possible. I remember hearing somewhere (I don’t remember exactly where) that the director wanted to make this Godzilla not just a force of nature but also a divine being. Godzilla is not just an animal protecting its territory but also a divine figure punishing the humans who foolishly waged war against each other and disturbed it. While that’s not necessarily a new concept it gives much more merit and higher stakes to the conflict between the main characters and Godzilla. It shows that even in the face of a god’s judgment people can face their past trauma and move forward to the future. As for Godzillas walk I’m pretty sure the design and animation were homages to the original. Personally I like it. I feel like an overly animated Godzilla (like the legendary films) would’ve taken away from the movie’s aesthetic. I think it also adds to the idea that he’s a divine figure, like a giant moving statue of a deity than a normal living creature.
@say5070
@say5070 10 месяцев назад
@@CYB3RxPRO I was saying that the creator of this video would probably feel like he didn't have much character. Personally I wouldn't say he was much of a character tbh but that wouldn't bother me as much because Godzilla has had a lot of different variations over the yrs and this is in line with what it is supposed to be which is that of an destroyer. Not even necessarily an angry destroyer seeking vengeance. Just reorganizing his living room by leveling some buildings. In his smaller form he did seem to be less monster like and more like a dangerous creature tho and this movie had a lot of subtle story telling beats so that was probably on purpose. That last part was a great segue to the land movement which I wasn't very much a fan of. I see what you mean about over animated movements but the smaller Godzilla had much more fluid movement to me and it looked great (maybe because it was in the dark where CGI looks best.) That one was smaller tho and that more fluid movement served to make Godzilla better interact with smaller targets like the humans on Ohto island. I also thought his movement in the water was really fluid and natural looking and the camera angles they shot of the boat with Godzilla looking behind with his eyes trained on them really brought gravitas to the scene with the motion. I just felt like it was too stiff when walking but I do like your interpretation of it because if that's what they were going for, mission succeeded. I would have literally described it as a statue. If you play video games and have played Elden Ring, there are bosses called Erdtree Watchdogs that have a very similar movement style and you guessed it, they are moving statue type enemies. (Bear in mind the first Godzilla movie I watched was 98 and grew up on Jurassic Park so I have a bias towards more lively movement styles)
@CYB3RxPRO
@CYB3RxPRO 10 месяцев назад
@@say5070 edit: sorry this is so long lol I do think there’s a small bit of disconnect with how Godzilla was handled. However I believe that it was done on purpose. Now I can’t say for sure as I’m not the director, but I think the concept of “force of nature” vs “divine figure” explains the discrepancy in Godzilla’s animations best. The island attack in the beginning in particular is a clear reference to Jurassic Park-esque dinosaur films and shows Godzilla much more in the “force of nature” category. In that context I can see as to why he was much more smoothly and naturally animated because Godzilla is meant to be a big scary dinosaur at that point. As it’s only after he was nuked that his design becomes stiffer and more rigid which changes Godzilla into the more “divine” figure I mentioned before. As for his smooth water animations from what I’ve heard Jaws was a big inspiration for the director and it clearly shows in the boat chase scene. Godzilla’s movements in the water were much more natural than previous incarnations, but I think that’s on purpose to push the scary aspect of Godzilla. In previous movies he’d just somehow stand up straight in the deep ocean and walk forward, so there’s definitely an air of believability and realism to how he swims in this movie. If he just stood straight up in the water it would take a lot away from the tension. I think It’s clear to see a lot of the decision making regarding Godzilla in this movie was to make him as scary and threatening as possible using two different methods, both a smooth and natural one and a rigid and divine one. I could go so much more into detail on my own theories, interpretations, and ideas of how the movie molds together perfectly but that would take way too long (I could literally write pages upon pages). Including more as to why I believe Godzilla is actually more of a character than what’s shown. Nonetheless these are just my subjective opinions and interpretations but I think it provides a new light to see parts of the movie under. Whether by intention or not I think we can find our own equally justifiable meanings from many parts of the movie, and personally I think that’s the best part about media in general. Of course the film itself isn’t perfect and you’re free to disagree or argue against the points I made too, in the end I’m just happy is getting the recognition it deserves. This is just a side tangent but I’m a huge Godzilla fan and also grew up with the 98 Godzilla as my first Godzilla movie, it still holds a special place in my heart despite how sacrilegious most fans think it is, but as a kid the Toho films we’re definitely my favorite and still are. Also I have indeed played Elden Ring and can’t wait for the dlc. Also I apologize if my comment is not entirely cohesive, I usually write it out train of consciousness style and edit it after. Sometimes I just like to talk too much like what I’m doing right now lol completely and unnecessarily making this comment longer than it needs to be.

Man trust me you are mirroring my feelings of how things have been increasingly radical since Shin Godzilla. Everything you've said ive said myself. Thing is Minus one from design alone looks to be like its going back to its roots not only that but it feels more like a culmination of everything that came before. The moment I saw the design and trailer I knew this is the Godzilla we've all been waiting for. Not to say that Shin was bad its great Godzilla movie something refreshing just like the changes 2014 did. Just i prefer the traditional approach to Godzilla not the radical interpretations that continued to follow.

"Ok so imagine Godzilla shows up, is like 10x bigger than normal, and wrecks the whole planet so bad that all of humanity has to board colony ships and leave the planet to live in the stars. Now imagine they run out of resources and have to return to earth for one last final battle." "Ok now imagine its boring as shit." As a fellow GFan, I do understand the concern with Minus One. But as I'm sure you and many others know by now: nah, we're good. Might be one of the best Godzilla films ever made. Might be THE best. Such a touching story. The movies from the 70s 80s and 90s were pretty campy and corny. They really were made for the mindset of a 7 year old. These new series and movies are diving in to metaphysical and alternate universes which shockingly should be up alot of people's alleys considering of tech advancements and recent other superhero movies like the MCU. I loved The TOHO movies as a kid. The rubber suits, the cheesiness of it, the fights, etc. Now as an adult trying to watch them back, I have a hard time staying awake. It’s tricky making something that’s essentially a child’s fantasy interesting for an adult audience. Marvel managed to pull it off, although they are struggling now because they are making movies about secondary characters that didn’t really have much of a fan base to start with, but that’s another story. Godzilla has always been a character for good or bad. The original movie was interesting because Godzilla was a credible threat, and no one really knew what to do. The movie (the American version anyway) was narrated by Raymond Burr who managed to sound foreboding as well as optimistic. No small feat. I do enjoy the monster verse version of Godzilla although I hate the way he looks in that version. He is still a character, he still has his own agenda in those movies, and they are at least interesting. But I do agree, as fun as they are, something is missing. Godzilla minus one looks epic from the trailers. A leaner, meaner version of the character that does inspire some “oh shit!” Moments. I’m excited to see it. I just hope we don’t get any American rewrites for the English version. I want to see it as the director intended it.

Just watched your video fully though. Won't fault you for having a opinion and concern for the series, but thankfully what we were delt out of Godzilla Minus 1 was amazing. I get your concern pre release, but the movie was handled gracefully with Godzilla, story arc and human characters. Ive never seen the anime series myself but I think its a tad unfair to use their reception as a reason to be skeptical about Minus 1.

Overlooked that each of the non-human allies - not only turns against the humans but enables and helps an enemy monsters! But Singularity Point was is a stand alone work! As is with Shin Godzilla too - these movies are one and done! Uniquely original and finished stories... The only similarities Minus One has with Shin Godzilla is the use of a First Stage variant! With Minus One going the extra step of utilizing this stage to be an antagonizer to a main character - which was an aspect that Shin didn't really seem to do - be personal! What Shin Godzilla highlighted was the extraordinary human resources and more "true to life" social style of problem solving and team work... Which is certainly implied in almost all of these movies - Shin Godzilla showcases how that plays out... But... Frankly... How or What are you seeing as being the downside / creeping fear? Money wise - Minus One was a Shoe-String Budget that reaped Maga Block Buster performance... Which unlike the other two - this movie doesn't come off as having some awkward reworking / radical shift on WHAT Godzilla is! Now I have no context on the new NetFlix content... Monarch Legacy of Monsters has already stepped all over Kong Skull Island... Now what can I say about Minus One - and I haven't even seen the movie! 1) Size Matters - they dropped down Godzilla's size and in turn put much more detail into facial expressions and his intentions! His comes off as being more personal and hunting humans. So instead of being a "hurricane" sized animal - his appearance is more like a huge angry alligator walking on two legs! 2) Doesn't have or require prologue! Totally stand alone restart of an original Godzilla monster. Is not connected to or leads into Legendary Film's Monsterverse! So one ticket gives the whole story. 3) I was born in '73... I've watched most of the movies and been a fan most of my life - I have to say that more content with weird stories and visuals that are solely done as eye candy is many, many folds < than all the many years of nothing and wishing!

If you've watched all Japanese Godzilla films and are slamming the CG trilogy this hard, then I can't believe that you were paying attention during the other films. They're not just "monster fights go brrrr", they all have some kind of message whether it be moral, political, environmental, philosophical, or all. Godzilla has been political from the first film and the CG trilogy is no different. I think you just missed the point. Don't get me wrong, I hated the first CG movie when I first saw it and didn't bother watching the other two, but once I went through and watched all 29 Japanese Godzilla movies (up to Shin) plus another 15 movies I consider part of the same universe like Rodan, Mothra's movies, Atragon, Varan, Frankenstein Conquers the World, The Mysterians, the Zone Fighter series, Space Amoeba, Gorath, and many many more, the CG movies clicked and I ended up loving them. Yes, the monsters battles are entertaining, but the messages the movies have always had from the get-go are all there in this trilogy too. Give them a rewatch and look past the spectacle. The third film gets real philosophical and it was cool, making Ghidorah basically God. Singular Point made Godzilla way too complicated because you need to be a high mathematician. I will however liken the CG trilogy to Ghost in the Shell, as it is about as philosophical as it gets but if you go in thinking it's "cyborg cop fights crime" then you're going to have a bad time. The CG movies just aren't as accessible to general audiences as, say, Pacific Rim

I have seen the other movies. I know they are more than just monster fights. I just wished these films were more like those films in the sense that were both fun, had something to say, but also kept the TITULAR CHARACTER a character. Not to sound rude, but just because I have more hope because they are in line with what I want to see, that doesn't mean it's 1-1 with what I want to see.

This is a goofball review. I personally like the evolved plot line for Godzilla. I anticipated it being very different and it didn’t disappoint. It’s non canon and subverts expectation which I was pleasantly surprised about. I have watched EVERY Godzilla film, cartoon and anime including this trilogy and the singularity. All very different takes and is more cerebral. Science-y and touches on evolution. So sorry I totally disagree with your assessment. But I hear you.

damn some of the comment are very radical about the monsterverse or toho for some reason, either way i wanted to say that singular point was more scientific than political tbh but had godzilla mostly sidelined because they wanted the human character to figure out what that (singular point) is, which tbh isnt the greatest directing and really was dissapointing, and from what i see from minus one, it look like it wouldnt be anything like shin like the metamorphisis and such, so i wouldnt worry all that much considering this is live action which they want to succes i assume

It’s okay man, u don’t have to worry anymore, Godzilla minus one was a masterpiece! And man, the polygon trilogy and Singular point are the most unthinkable ideas this franchise ever had, it’s unbelievable how hard it was to get animated series/movies of Godzilla that could appeal to a whole new audience and also fans and then they gave us two that were like “We are now launching new Godzilla animations worldwide on Netflix…..what if we done the most far thing possible from a Godzilla product, that won’t resemble a Godzilla story at all….twice?”. And although I even kinda like Singular point, jesus man, why? Why make something that’s so uncomprehensible and far from everything in the franchise that no one that’s not a fan could appreciate and a fan could only like it because you know the character in it (in Singular point you can’t even UNDERSTAND what’s happening being a fan or not). Like who would even watch that trilogy or that series if it hasn’t the Godzilla name on it???? The little praise it has would be completely gone.

I've been a fan of Godzilla since I saw Godzilla vs. Megalon in the theater first run. Toho invented Godzilla. I'm going to stick with the belief that they're a good arbiter of their own character's vision rather than someone claiming he became a fan after seeing the Broderick movie of all things and then throws salt on the studio's whole direction by showing cartoon after cartoon. Minus One is clearly going back to the character's roots. If you respect the original, there's no way you can't respect this effort.
