The controversy around the twins is actually pretty interesting. Reno Wilson, the voice of Mudflap, Jazz, Brains, and others, has said that they were supposed to be poking fun at wannabe gangsters, not black people. Apparently the idea for the characters came from a comedic bit he was developing with Tom Kenny at the time. Reno was surprised when people interpreted the character as an offensive caricature. Edit: Apparently Reno Wilson didn't voice Jazz, but the point still stands.
90% of the people who say they're racist either didn't even see the actual movie, or they dismissed them immediately without knowing any of what you said. I'm not saying they're great characters (in fact the film would have been so much better without them, and if that screentime had been given to sideswipe or the arcees), but the "bayformers are racist" thing is so fucking stupid and misinformed.
The thing is that ALL characters in the Beyverse movies are caricatures. Micheal Bay movies are not where one goes to find complex characterization. That idea of the VA implies a lot of backstory for why a character acts like that, something a Bay movie would NEVER delve into. So what you end up with is a shallow caricature that's vague enough to be open to negative interpretation.
I would be interested in how much better they could this figure today. But it would probably be so small and frustrating anyway. The collection just doesn’t feel complete without them.
Fun fact: They WERE in DOTM. For like a few seconds and only in vehicle mode. However in the movie tie in comics, they get murked by Sentinel Prime, which would have been hilarious to see.
if they had them have 3 minutes of screen for their death it would make sense, but would still get barks and nicks from haters not impressed seeing the 2 and being a bit smitten they had them die quick
if we got to see the more mature skids and mudflap in dark of the moon they might have had a chance. Its a deep shame because I tell this story all the time but, when I was falling behind in school my reading teacher went out of his way to buy me the deluxe dotm mudflap as a kid so that toy and character holds a lot of meaning to me.
As a black male, when I saw them in ROTF they were one of my favorite parts of the movies because they were funny and their bickering resembled how actual siblings bicker. However, now that I’m older (24) I now see how some people didn’t like it. Doesn’t bother me much still but to each is to own.
They were made to poke fun at wannabe gangster types, regardless of race. No racial commentary was meant to be implied, especially since one of the two voice actors is black and one is white, but you'd never even know which is which. I think the filmmaker's only crime was poor humor.
I’m in the exact same scenario as you. Saw them when I was a kid at first, and I always liked them, specifically due to their designs but never thought they were racist even now I love them, and apparently they are meant to be wannabe gangsters, which to me is a “oh no, anyways” sort of thing because outside of speaking in slang and having gold teeth, i don’t even think they are anything much like gangsters. Mohawk is way worse anyways, because he actually acts like a gangster making constant death threats and is a decepticon, but eh I’ve seen people get more upset over drift looking Asian than Mohawk.

Loce them or hate them, they were interesting designs. It's a shame we're unlikely to see them in Studio Series as I think modern engineering would truly make good figures for them.

Honestly, if hasbro did ever do the twins cause we'rerunning out of on screen characters, then I'd say just reissue the ice cream truck set. They fit perfectly with the studio series scaling and compared to the altmodes we see Skids & Mudflap in for the rest of the movie we only ever seen that version of them get one other release and that was in a toys r us exclusive 2-pack (technically 3-pack?) with Demolisher

@James-ne1nl The rest of the dinobots have already been mentioned to be planned after SS86 Swoop gets released, they said before that they wanted to complete the G1 set when asked about the live action dinobots and then they'll go back to the other ones. DOTM Warpath was never in the movie, I said they were running out of on-screen characters if you actually read my message. The main part of SS was to celebrate the movie franchise and give people that grew up with those films a chance to have more accurate versions of the characters from their childhood. Again, if they just wanted to get the twins out and be done with them, then they could just reissue the ice cream truck and be done with them since they'd fit in just fine with SS (they were around half the size of Bee which the ice cream truck versions are) and people wouldn't end up paying for what is being asked for on that set.

These guys were always my favorite as a kid because they were really goofy and funny, the racism went right over my head when I was five, like it should. I still find them funny.
Out of the other Autobots, the twins were what really keep me watching RoTF because of their fun personality. And those two have the most personality out of the other Autobots or any Cybertronian characters in the Bayverse other than Bumblebee and Jetfire because of how much screen time they got.
I actually thought they were just a couple of hillbillies when I first saw the film. Ah well, folks nowdays always gotta find something to be offended about behind every rock...

I remember “Tuner Mudflap” being the absolute longest shelf-warmer here in Winnipeg. Shit was on shelves until mid-way through Dark of the Moon in 2011-12

I'll give them this, I like Skids in green colors and would love to see Legacy G1 Skids in green, like that one time they repainted the original G1 figure in green and orange as different characters to represent Skids and Mudflap from ROTF
I love the twins ! ... i did grow up with the Spanish version of the movie sooooo maybe that’s the why (they are more likable and fun) ... but I still like them in the English version ... I did ended up buying the original release for the twins since there’s no way they’ll get new releases... they are pretty noice.
Finally, I find another person who seen the movie in spanish, I am from argentina and was a child i see the movie and like this characters, that's because they don't have a racist speech in spanish, they only have a pronunciation like they were dummies, like their are new in the war and want to help but they need more experience 😅.

One thing I loved about the DOTM figures, Skids & Mudflap had completely different molds. Hasbro could of been cheap and made them same, just changed the head and colors, but no they were completely different figures.
They had different alt modes so it would have been pretty obvious if they had done that. I still find it weird that Mudflap's toy robot mode looks more like the robot mode for the ice cream truck form than his actual on-screen robot mode as a car.
@@fredbitproductions347 They did, and that figure sucked even worse. They were supposed to show up in the movie but got cut. They were supposed to die instead of Ironhide in a heroic, character redeeming last stand while Ironhide escaped.
Personally, if by some distant chance they make Studio Series figures of these yahoos, I feel they should do what they did with SS RotF Arcee and ship both in one deluxe package. Maybe shortpack them too, if they’re sure they won’t sell well…
Honestly I would LOVE a studio series version of their ice cream truck form. Heck I had the DOTM version of skids and I loved it despite its flaws! It would be a joy to see figures of the two again, regardless of the history.

Awesome review I got the DOTM skids and Mudflap toys back in 2017 at my first bottom and I still like them. If hasbro ever does release them into studies series thru put have them as the ice cream form but maybe change the heads a bit
I want them so much for SS. If not, well...the only option I see is buy the Devil Savior Scrapper and get this 2 little guys. For me, it will be worth it
When I was a kid, devastator was my favorite character from these movies. I was obsessed with completing the character list from that devastator scene. I had Mudflap and devy from that original ROTF line, and I still remember the day I got skids to complete the scene. I'm still holding out hope for ss versions of these figures after the ss devastator got completed. I'd love to have an updated version of the character and bring back all those nostalgic feelings.
Personally I don't care about the controversy, I would like to see these made into the Studio Series. Lets be honest there were like two decent Bay films at most but that hasn't stopped them from making one of the best toylines Bay fans could have ever dreamed of. Assuming they even plan on completing the entire cast for each film, leaving these two out completely would just be unfair.
I didn't think the twins were racist, but the designs were crap, weren't funny, and frankly they both were just plain stupid. By stupid I mean the twins are dumber than a bag of hammers.
The ice cream truck one was goat from the og rotf mainline, let's think for a moment. If both of them would be released in Studio Series, would they be Deluxe or Core? 🤔
@@just_decibelio4605 If they did an ice cream truck release in Studio Series, I'd be more than fine with them being core class if the combined vehicle mode was deluxe sized and both figures were bundled in one package. I would also still want both of them in deluxe size though, just as standalone figures with their normal alt modes.
Dunno about better (I have the DotM Mudflap), but I think that since they do fall in line with what I call "The Great Shrinkdown of 2011", the DotM versions should at least scale with the rest of Studio Series...if they're the same height as the Studio Series Sideswipe molds.
I loved them as a kid I member one guy in school had the Human Alliance toy and we were stumped on how to transform it. Still a cool character. I think the characteristics on the Twins were meant to be satire in the same way All In the Family and Boondocks were. But people were understandably upset. I do wish we could get some modern toys though
I had no idea the back junk can fold that way, I’ve always kept mine in the hooded configuration (Huffer style). He currently sits in the corner of my closet cuz almost everything is loose and all screws and pins have rusted so no fixing potential exists
I had the mudflap toy and my twin brother had the skids toy. Because "hey, robot twins" and we were like 9 or 10 at the time. I broke mudflap's windshield really easily and I remember being real bumbed about that.
Honestly, I didn't really care too much for the exaggerated personalities of the characters but I did really like the toys because of how much of a challenge it gave me as a kid to transform. I always took really good care of my figures and I'm glad I have the original decos of both skids and mudflap still, but I really wish they would do a studio series set of them to give them updated engineering and articulation just so I could have them for the nostalgia factor of how much I enjoyed them
Personally, I love the alt modes. That's it. The robot mode looks like a car threw up on them and the face, god I hate the face. But the alt mode looks amazing! I would love to have a vaguely similar person have this alt mode, with a completely redesigned face and overhauled personality
I honestly think the color scheme and some parts of the design are pretty good (E.G, the giant left arm). I honestly wish for a design that is a combination of this and the G1 Skids
*I already lost my hope for my two favorite characters to be rereleased. Bought HFTD Tuner Skids and Tuner Mudflap from Mercari. They are a bit shorter than SS Jazz, so personally I feel they scale perfect with Studio Series, wish Skids just didn't crouch down constantly but I actually started loving them more than any of the other figures!
If you want twins in dotm. I suggest reading the dotm book by Allan Dean Foster. It kinda redeems them and makes you feel for them and the book itself is very good (and cheap)
I had no idea people didn't like Skids and Mudflap until the 3rd movie came out cause that's when I got social media... I would love an SS Skids and Mudflap lol
I'm okay with the characters, but I can understand why others aren't thrilled by them. I do own their original deluxe toys as well as the Ice Cream truck (though wished I bought the DOTM toys back then). Do hope one day Hasbro will make Studio Series versions of them at some point, especially with their Ice Cream truck alt mode.

The fact I know very well how people despise the Twins is that one time of FB, in a Transformers group, I posted talking if the designs were very well changed into better portions, they could be like Bayverse G1-like Bumblebee and Cliffjumper, for how small they are. Boi, the many people saying "no" was insane, even if I told abour changing a lot of stuff in them.

I have a random Skids in my box of lesser loved toys, don't remember where I picked him up or when. I would like to get the matching Mudflap, if only to satisfy my completionist nature. And if I ever happen to spot the ice cream truck pair at a price I can afford, I'll snap it up as well. Again, just to say that I've got the whole cast from the movie.
Tbh I member really liking the standard releases of skids and mudflap in ROTF. Don't got them any more tho so maybe I'd have a different perspective now.
I got the dotm deluxe a few days ago with a bulk lot. It scales decently with studio series and is a bit more stable but it's also not great and it's only stable because it's like 40% feet
honestly, if it wasn't a floppy mess he'd be a decent toy. and thew's copy of the earlier version of the mould didn't seem floppy so it doesn't seem that widespread of a problem. also yeah he needs a different head
I actually really liked these two just because I grew up with ROTF. I understand why their hated now that I’m an adult but the vehicle modes are still pretty cool. The only reason I wish they would make them is to make a complete collection of all the ROTF auto bots. However I do not understand why people think they’re racial stereotypes, being young I thought they were just idiots.

I love both Mudflap and Skids ROTF figures, only downsides I have are Skids’ mid-shin joints are loose on mine and Mudflap being a hunch-back; solved by removing the missile storage by unscrewing. Correction: the LOUD majority of people ONLINE thought they were insensitive. Kids at the time; the audience, LOVED them. People online tend to think they’re the only ones that exist as an audience, for every one person that is screaming online, there are thousands who don’t post online, keep to themselves and move on with their lives. Not everyone smacks their comments online, in fact, the extreme minority do.
Would be cool if they made a G1 styled Mudflap so people could have atleast some variant of The Twins even though G1 Skids didnt having a twin. A Legacy "Movie Universe" version of The Twins could've also been a solution to make these 2 in a "G1" type of fashion so they weren't like RotF but had the vehicles and colors of the 2. And possibly also have grapples as accessories as reference to the arms
There’s a Japanese character called Screech who resembles the G1 Skids body type in Bayverse Mudflap colors and goes on adventures across the multiverse with a similarly green counterpart to Skids There’s also the crane truck Decepticon from Cybertron who is the second most prominent user of the Mudflap name after the Bayverse character
We never noticed the "stereotypes" like other folks when we were kids, but we liked the Twins. We had both ROTF Mudflap and Skids toys in the Voyager class versions.
Even if it’s not these characters specifically, I really hope that the general concept of a ice cream truck combiner makes a return in the future! If anything, I want another ice cream truck Autobot!
The only thing I like about movie Skids; it's green. If they could re-release Legacy Skids in movie Skid's and Mudflap's colors I would totally get that.
