People are "home swapping" for their vacation stays rather than booking an Airbnb. This is an obvious disaster waiting to happen.

You shouldn't open your home like this.

You do understand most airbnbs are vacation homes not their personal house.

It sounds nasty. If you know what people do in hotel rooms imagine that happening to your house except that they cleaned up afterwards

Living with my friend for a year turned into a nightmare. Her house doubled as an Airbnb with two constantly occupied rooms by a revolving door of inconsiderate guests. It was a nonstop assault on my senses: noise, theft, disregard for house rules, slamming doors - a symphony of disrespect. The worst? Guests coming in from the street, grabbing food with unwashed hands, leaving me to question hygiene standards. Disgusting doesn't even begin to describe it.

No regulations and possible false charges of theft or damage for lawsuits? No thanks

As a mom of 6 kids, I would happily do some small chores in return for paying a 300sqft hotel room price but getting a full kitchen, 2 bedroom, full Airbnb with a yard and walking distance to the beach. The difference in comfort is statistically significant and naps can actually happen. Home swapping is a no, but Airbnb and verbo are my favorite things about this timeline.

Staying in someone else's home isnt nearly as bad as opening your own home to complete strangers and have strangers staying in your own place. Ewwww. No thank you.

Matt. You say things so out of left field, that you are annoyed or angry about, that it is like my angry deceased father is back for a little visit each weekday. I'm literally shocked that someone doesn't like house swapping or the homey feeling of a bed and breakfast type stay. It is supposed to be more comfortable, less generic or antiseptic than a hotel. The binder is because people quickly discover vacationers will absolutely destroy a home and not think twice about it. I do understand your feeling of not wanting to be responsible for that much cleanup that is included in the price of a hotel room though. Now all I need to hear is you going off about going on a date wearing designer jeans with strategically placed holes in the knees to know that you actually have my dad trapped somewhere and are getting his random crazy ideas for your show. If you do have him, tell him I miss him but not his tirades.

Hotels really stink compared to a nice airbnb, especially with kids. It’s way more affordable in most cases. You can eat and prepare meals for the family for a fraction of the cost of eating out. It’s way more relaxed and pleasant. It often comes with free parking in areas that might normally be $25 bucks a day and has other amenities that hotels charge for like high speed WiFi, pools and hot tubs. We’ve gone to places that even let us use bicycles and golf carts to buzz around the area. And you can often split the cost with friends and relatives.

The main problem with airbnb model is greed. The company started charging too high of fees, and the hosts quickly moved from charging enough to put a little extra money in their pocket for their extra room to trying to make an actual living of being a host. This is where the whole model went south. In early days, it was for solo travelers staying a few nights and very minimal needs beyond a place to lay their head. People who really just needed a place to crash while they went about their scheduled business in the city during the day. That was a perfectly reasonable model, but when it changed over to the Airbnb itself being the vacation destination is when it started to make me nauseous.

Not all air bnbs are like that; some sure, they have a whole list of chores that the house cleaner should do. I just got back from a trip where I stayed at the nicest Airbnb I’ve ever been. My family and I were there for 5 days, and there really was no list of chores; just a couple things like dishes and sweeping but it was optional. The place was super cozy and had everything we needed, the hosts were wonderful, so we didn’t mind cleaning up after ourselves a little. With two little kids running around we felt it was only fair to clean up. The house-swap thing though? No way! That’s just really weird.

We would never house swap, but for decades we’ve used VRBO and other reputable rental companies to find vacation homes when we travel for leisure. Many owners have moved from those homes to other accommodations, and keep the former house solely to make extra income. We have stayed in some that are on several acres of land. We’re from Texas, and travel within the state for vacations, so this type of arrangement seems natural to us.

I've heard my grandmother talk about homeswapping during the 60's and 70s. They were dirt poor and one way to afford a vacation near the sea was to swap homes. However, she did that with a family she 'knew' and it was the same family every time. Grandmother and her family would go to the sea, the other family got to stay between the hills.

sounds like "crashing at a friends place" but for the kind of people that don't have friends.
