FILL OUT THIS FORM AND I’LL BUY YOU SCRUBS: forms.gle/FzJjf32E94JMyqDm6
Being a health professional can be really hard. Along with the endless hours of work and study that goes into learning medicine, many young and aspiring health pros are forced to live on shoestring budgets with mounting debt on their shoulders. I’ve been there, I get it. I don’t want any hardworking med students, residents, nurses, or anyone else to struggle with the decision of buying scrubs or paying rent, so I’m purchasing up to $20,000 of scrubs just for you, for free, with no hashtags or marketing gimmicks required. I’m tired of multi-million dollar corporations leveraging free scrubs (which cost them pennies to manufacture) to young healthcare workers in exchange for social media posts and faux-grassroots marketing campaigns. If you need scrubs, fill out this form and I’ll send you whatever scrubs you want, no strings attached.

I just became an instant fan of Dr. Mike. As a female DO, after the crap I saw posted by people degrading our profession because Trump’s Doctor is a “DO” and therefore not a “real doctor” and the disastrous figs DO commercial, it truly brought back memories from when my friends said they’d rather go to Caribbean medical schools which are notorious for low standards and for-profit agenda than to go to a DO school because of stigma. I chose a DO school because I valued holistic medicine and back then, I remember thinking to myself “what an ignorant comment to make about DO profession” and this week just brought back those terrible memories, IDK where those “friends” are now but it’s a sad reality that their words ring true even in the 21st century.

Fun fact: in Italy, DOs and MDs are VERY different, they are absolutely not the same. I find it super interesting that the instance where they had a "stupid male" model, it was as a nurse, the field where males are negatively stereotyped the most. So rather than showing they're not sexist by targeting both males and females, they're doing the opposite by further adding to the negative stereotypes of the most stereotyped groups. @matthewbeland8443
@matthewbeland8443 3 года назад
@@kindnessisalie5411 So you’re about to graduate from high school and go into college? Okay, well here’s the general breakdown about the process of getting into Med school. 1) Bare minimum requirements: prerequisite courses and the MCAT. During your undergraduate education, you need to make sure you take and complete all the courses required for Med school entry (most school require the same courses with some variation. When you get into college/university, your academic advisor can help ensure you take all those classes throughout college). Then, you also need to take the MCAT, which is another standardized test (like SAT and ACT) needed for Med school applications. Of course, it goes without saying that the better your undergrad GPA and MCAT scores are, the better chances you have of being accepted. 2) Clinical exposure/experience during undergrad. Though not all schools require it, it significantly improves your chances if you have prior experience working in a hospital/clinical setting with other healthcare workers. This can include shadowships, volunteer work, or even paid jobs. (My experiences included shadowing doctors in the Emergency department, and being a medical scribe where I was paid to write the medical notes for a doctor as he saw patients throughout the day). Make sure to plan for that. Sometimes you might need to take a gap year after you graduate college do you have the time to gain that experience (I took a gap year so I could scribe). 3) Anything extra that makes you stand out. This can include and research projects you did in undergrad, volunteer, job experiences, extracurricular activities, achievements/rewards, etc. 4) The Medical school Primary application. When you’ve graduated and gathered all that you could from the points I mentioned above, you’ll then create an electronic application packet where you include all of the information above, as well as important documentation, letters of recommendation, and personal statement. This is known as your primary application. You’ll then send this out to all the schools you want to attend. 5) Secondaries and interview. If you meet the minimum requirements, the Med schools will send you a secondary application to fill out. This usually consists of essay questions about why you want to be a doctor, why this school in particular, what are your strengths/weaknesses, etc. keep in mind that EACH medical school will send you a unique secondary, so often students will be completing on average 20+ secondary applications. If the school likes your answers, they will then send you an interview invite, where they try to get to know you as a person. If the interview goes well and they like you, that’s when you’ll receive an acceptance letter. Well, I know that was a long read, but if you got through all of that, I hope it helped explain things a little bit better. One tip I would give if you wish to one day get into Med school, start planning early. A lot of these things I mentioned take time to prepare for, so the sooner you have a plan set (even as yearly as your first year in college) the better and easier your life will be. Again, I hope this helped! Best of luck in your future endeavors!

I had cateract surgery this afternoon and was supported by Med Students. They were lovely and caring and asked questions about my reasons for being there so young etc (May 2018 I had a detached retina and the cateract is due to that, it always comes up) but also answered my questions. Just a simple appreciation comment for them being wonderful and making me feel comfortable during a strange time. ❤️

The advertisement of the female doctor in pink scrubs was disgusting. As women we are constantly having to prove ourselves in the work place that we are more than competent and not that Figs advertisement, especially in male dominated medical specialities. The perpetuation of "women are stupid" and taking advantage of students that are heavily indebted is appalling. This advertisement and their whole philosophy only aims to line their pockets and does not help the people they "claim" to be making these products for. Thank you for your support and bringing attention to this issue. You're our healthcare hero too! ❤

For real, the ad was appalling. I'm shocked at other comment subthreads here where people are defending the company on the grounds that they're pro-BLM. That's all well and good, totally, but I bet if the woman in the ad were also black, those commenters would be singing a different tune. Anyone with any sense should care about how this ad attacks women and DOs in general, there's nothing okay about it. Even with a male and no particular specialty named, it'd be a tacky and condescending and tone-deaf ad.

Are there other ads with men in the same pose (in blue, reading a gynecology book upside down)? They may just be ill advised, and not specifically sexist? Not defending, just trying to get some context

@@birdyfeederz7940 There was no male equivalent that I could see. But even if there was a male alternative of that nature, that also reinforces the narrative that male doctors are not good gynaecologists simply because they are male and do not possess female genitalia? I've seen and heard that stereotype in play too. Both of those scenarios are sexist to both genders, and both wrong. The figs ad just furthers damaging stereotypes in the medical field which we all try so hard to reduce. I hope that's given some more context 😊

Imagine if the greedy, biased jerks who make these adverts had a life-threatening medical emergency at the beach. And the only doctor around was a female D.O. in a bikini. Would they refuse treatment? We all know the answer is a resounding *no.* In such a situation, they'd give anything to get the female D.O. doctor's help. Because deep down, they know very well that she's a fully qualified professional who can save their lives. And that's why sexist people are hypocrites. Dr Mike, thank you for covering this topic, and for all the good that you do.

I really hope I'm not too late to this! I filled out a form for my mom because she can't afford new scrubs. She is bigger lady and wears out the bottoms due to chub rub quite often. I've sewed up her 2 sets at least 3 times each when they have busted on the job. She is currently on a weight loss journey and is down 30 lbs as of now! She started as a nurse only a little while ago, a bit later in life, after having 4 children and is practically a single mom. She is struggling to raise us and often misses out on the essentials so as not to make her children miss out. I really hope this works out for her! :)
