Im the opposite, i reckon tuning, refueling and seing a nitro smoking and screaming round is better than just pluggin in and using it, Although i will say that it depends when you want to use it, if i have limited time or am using it in a noise sensitive area then brushless all the way :)
I haven’t had these problems with my savage XL I have an lrp .30 and I’ve been using the same glow plug for 5 years now. Mine will also stay running at idle for ever.
Honestly!!?? You had the same glow plug for 5 years!!?? I don't know how you're managing to do that cos glow plugs naturally degrade and clog up with soot etc after even 4-5 tanks through them!!?? I really struggle to believe you my friend!!?? lol.
@@UpVoltageOverclocking Maybe i am ? Honestly though I'd luv to know your fuel mixes and setups cos 5 years of regular use is incredible for a glow plug my friend! Whatever you're doing it's obviously working so keep doing it cos glow plug failure is a pain! lol
They were slowly going bankrupt, but then they made all there money back, until the Traxxas hobbyco law suit where Traxxas took 65% of hobbyco’s funds because of borrowing ideas, so now hobbyco is for sale and bankrupt again
What I like about traxxas is that they solve problems. 1st X-maxx came out and it had issues. Slipper clutch, diffs etc. 1 year later the 8s V2 came out and it solved all those problems. For the most part, it would have been nice to have a more reliable esc but their warranty is good and fitting a max 6 is a cheap and easy fix!
Kevin Talbot it would be cheap fix kev if truck wasnt so much to begin with i nvr been big hpi fan as im watching your video decide whether buy motor for new ss savage i never used its been sitting on shelf long time lol i do remember traxxas slash for me so simple only bashable vehicle didnt go up to 1000 bux and called tracxs 10 yrs later yes they take back one of 7 thats right 7 velinion escs i have none work but motors i must say very versatile but end day i could get cheap esc for 3500 motor 15 bux and buy. Arrma outcast thatscwhat i did all tracxas suing is buis ruining it for us only reason they keep sending you new escs how bout losi trucks kev way better xxmaxx
Great vid Kev. As with all the RC content you put out, it's gold for consumers wanting to buy anything. Thanks to you I have avoided many future purchase blunders. In addition I have a good idea of what some good cars need to be great. If an RC holds up with you it will outlive me lol! Keep up the awesome work mate!
Got my first savage Probly 18 ish yrs ago. Because of many things you mention in this video I sold my savage and got out of it. Because of you and the Xmaxx I’m hopping to get my xt90 leads soldered on the truck and running today. Also trying the Turnigy 120 duo charger and Turnigy 5500 rapid batteries. Can’t wait! Thx Kev!
I've been doing RC for 30 years, I still prefer my Team Associated MGT and RC10T never gave me the issues your having with the HPI. Never cared for them. I use to be a sponsored racer and usually only ran Losi and Team Associated. I have an Xmaxx and my girlfriend runs a Nero. She never has issues with hers, but everytime the Xmaxx goes out I end up needing a trip the the shop to replace something. Only reason I don't run my old Team Associated stuff is I can't get parts anymore. My MGT rarely breaks and I never had to set readjust the carb, I set it up and it's held it setting great!. Great video's, cheers!
My savage 4.6 has been sat on a shelf for about 2yrs now. Keep meaning to sell it but I have a love/hate relationship with it. Love the look of it though.
I was feeling your pain and frustration throughout the video but that very last couple of seconds when you groaned and faded off the screen had me laughing my ass off! Keep up the work bud, we're all here for you and to some degree we've all been there LOL
I agree with you 100% Kev. My local hobby shop steered me away from HPI a few years ago, too much maintenance. And if wrenching is your thing then nitro is for you but if you just want to have fun and drive you gotta go brushless. Cheers !
aye you trippin i have a nitro hyper 7 with abt $700-$1000 worth of parts and wheels and stuff and i love that thing 4wd. top speed is 89mph was clocked at a drag strip. ofna hyper 7 is a great buggy. jus have to take the time get a nitro hyper 7 not electric.
had a savage x for 13 years now love it and wouldnt swap it for anything cant beat the sound the smell and love fixing it when i break it! nitro or petrol all the way!!
Love the video kev I've still got my ss 4.6 from back in the day it was the best basher haven't run it in a couple years but put some fuel in it she would go for sure
Kevin I absolutely love your videos. They keep me going with my Rc's and keep me so motivated to continue with RC's. I know there are a few down sides to HPI parts and set ups as to there RTR but I must say they are brilliant, Maybe not as good as others but I must say you got to give them some credit. The savages are really difficult and a pain to work on but when the running they run like a bomb and they really know how to take a beating. I have a HPI Savage x4.6 and just got it up and running after they continued the model to get parts in that I needed and I couldn't be more pleased. I know there are lots of other RC's out there that are better but I can't complain about my Savage. It takes a beating, Engine runs perfect and is just so much fun and of course I take care of it - I don't bash it through the ground. Just thought I should give some input but keep up your amazing videos I absolutely love them! Keep well Kevin
The magic number was HPI #87229. Sadly been discontinued but yes, there was something like that back in the day, I guess they didn't sell enough of them to keep making them. I've never seen anyone run these but enough people complained about having no upgrade path even when they were still available.
I don't mind working on mine. I have a Revo 3.3. Like you said, it is easy to work on. I have no issues with the Nitro engine either, probably helps that I've been working on cars for years.
Hey kev, i really enjoy your videos. Keep it up man! I really enjoy seeing the nitro vids and i think others do to. Maybe its time for a new nitro basher??? *cough* tmaxx *cough*
Hey Kevin love your videos. I also have a savage xl but it is a brushless version, all upgraded. FLM Chassis and Gear Boxes, i run the losi lst shocks on it. Also have some alum. I run GPM Racing Drive Adaptors on mine. The tolerances on them are spot on right at 17mm. Part number is SAX1010. Also have a x-maxx and pretty much copied your build to a tee. Thing is an absolute BEAST!
I agree Kev, I stuffed around with Nitro for years, spent more time fixing it than racing it, then my wife bought me this thing called a XMAXX.... never looked back!!!!!!
That was 'shear' joy to watch! You should change your company name Kevin. Hmmmm..... Talbot Engineering Services.... nah, maybe Club Hammer...... or Club Hummer? I know, Kev's Knuckle Bashers!
Nitro HPI got me out of r/c as well. Maybe it was HPI, as I also had a 1/18th monster truck that died after 3 uses. I sold all my r/c stuff. Just got back in with the traxxas trx-4 in October and have to say it's easy to work on and LIPO batteries are amazing.
Still have my Hpi Savage SS, the only issue I experienced with failure is the rear diff after a landing a jump on power(full throttle) . Also running Lrp.32 motor. My complaint about this truck is its not easy to work on with the tvp style chassis.
I’ve had all these problems with the savages I’ve owned. I persevered for so long I too gave up with r/c. So many time consuming things. Bought an hpi baja 5b. For fun and run time the thing is awesome but I havent even fixed that for years lol.
I know this is late, but doubling the springs lowers the load on the shock body. As the springs will take the brunt of the compression force. Rebound doesnt matter as its linear and wont shock the damper.
Hi kevin luv ur videos and i like it when u have big love for the rc toys !! my question is ! I have the savage xl but i am tired of the petrol and always get off and then have to walk to the savage restart again and again again grrrrr!!!!! i would like it to make it electric !!! So what parts i need to buy ? i was looking for a compleet kit but nothing yeah for the battery !! what electric motor battery and more stuff !! and that's not to expensive !!! then i better off to buy the x-maxx and put the savage on fire !!! thx kevin hope u got the time and response
I love my savage octane. Ive had mine for a few years and the only issue i've ever had was servos going bad, which was exapected. I guess im one of the lucky ones.
It's the nature of nitro beast. Maintenance is key. However, I agree, if a person does not enjoy wrenching, nitro is not for them. Remember, if you run a nitro and shelf it for weeks, months, or longer without proper tlc, you get what you ask for.
I have one of these do brushless conversion it was my first and only car and the mess if I could find cheap motor and esc to go in it would be going in must be able to make motor mount any suggestions on cheap motor and esc you would need to run to keep same power
Reminds me of my savage 21 from way back when, 15 years ago now? I loved it but i was always repairing it, i remember shredding a spur gear every time i took it out :D Probably my fault...it was my first hobby RC car. But it felt like i was always sat there trying to start the thing, then when i finally got it going it would flip over and cut out again...I sold it after a year or so. All these years later I'm thinking of getting back into RC and getting another truck, but i'd probably go electric this time round.
I completely understand your frustration and the points you made about the nitro savage. I have two brushless savage XL's and they're GREAT!!!! However, you must put some money into them to get em where they should've been from HPI. Now, if you are willing to put that much into them youd be extremely happy with the savage.( brushless version that is) Kevin, yes they are a pain to work on and my Xmaxx is a lot easier to maintain. My redcat rampage XTE is even easier than the Xmaxx to be honest. Excellent video! It wasnt as Hilarious to me as it was to others simply because I've been in your shoes. I threw one across the yard once and shot it with a 12 gauge! I felt a lot better. Lol lol
Glad I am not the only one with a HPI Savage sitting on the shelf with a wheel stuck on and bent shafts and a fussy nitro motor I have a big 8cc CEN motor and Kawasaki Quad body and stunt Steve pilot which I will resurrect one day.
On my savage SS I've never had one diff issue and I run modded picco and a modded nova rossi REX. I have a few videos of them on my channel. Also you can get the integy wheel wideners with 17 mm hex. That's what I have and it makes it more stable plus you ditch those little nuts. I do agree tho I always think I'm gona take out my nitro than I think I need gas I need charge the nihm I need to charge glow plug driver I need to charge roto start. I started with nitro and love the way they sound and I will keep them around but nowdays lipos and brushless is way easier.
If you grew up running RC’s from Toys R Us then I can see why you like electric RC but a hobby is building ,creating, tinkering, and enjoying which is why Nitro will never die I love my 5.9 & 4.6 savage and my losi lst2 I will never go lipo I will burn dinosaurs forever
I have an HPI Trophy Truggy 4.6 and seriously it's the best nitro for working on easily everything is easy to access and it's super powerful. Yeah the Savages are nightmares to work on I'll agree with you there. If you're looking for a nitro that is good fun and easy to work on go with any HPI except the Savage range.
Skunkdog Gro That would be the last one I would ever recommend !!, owners had untold issues from the day of release, there is only one to get, Losi 5ive T.👍😀
I have my HPI savage xl 5.9 and it’s completely stock, what are all the upgrades you did to yours? I’d like to bulletproof mine, just make mine nice again
