The 'arguing' here is pretty funny in some of the comments. I can tell most folks making comments aren't experts in sports science nor sports performance nor speed & agility balance/coordination. The ladder drills aren't all encompassing and isn't intended to be stand alone as a development tool. In particular with youth athletes, the ladder drills really help with the baseline development of fast-feet frequency, maintaining balance and coordination. It is not the only tool for that purpose however. I'll just say, if you're a soccer player, and you can't effectively do ladder drills, you probably aren't great at dribbling in tight quarters while changing directions between opponents... which require quick and frequent small touches of the ball.

"if you're a soccer player, and you can't effectively do ladder drills, you probably aren't great at dribbling in tight quarters while changing directions between opponents" That is just the point. The correlation between the ladder and athletes isn't that the ladder makes you better at the sport. Being great at the sport will carry over to the ladder more often.

In football in Europe ladders are ABC of agility, you start to do ladders drills at 6 and basically you will never stop until you retire. They helps you in so many ways and as you say even with dribbling because you will get more agility and control of your body. And for the record there are so many different ladders and multiple ladders exercises. This guy probably is more focused on speed than on agility.

thoughts on using speed rope with single leg hops, front and side to side?
@joeschalley3689
@joeschalley3689 2 года назад
Speed rope is a great tool for developing ankle stiffness. It will allow you to transfer energy into the ground exp: sprint and jump. There is not need to master the speed rope. Being proficient is great but after just use it as a warm up.

I finally feel like I'm not alone. Agility ladders do nothing but reinforce bad motor habits. Same thing goes with excessive jump rope. Why would I train my athlete to take so many steps and go no where. True agility is reaction based. These closed skill drills don't affect game ability. So many better options and Chris has the best I've seen!

Yeah ok, tell every wide receiver and running back in the nfl that the ladder doesn’t do shit
@deez9805
@deez9805 2 года назад
No exercise is bad. It’s about how it’s being trained vs what you’re expecting from it, and also the quality of the reps. Football players and basketball players use the exact same footwork patterns for general movement cases at least. Which is what this is good for. Only people who can really utilize this for sport specific shit tho is running backs and receivers. Basketball players too if you’re someone who dribbles a lot. But again it’s about the way you’re using the ladder. The traditional uses for it are all wrong if you think about muscle memory training

What are some other drills would you recommend for kids to help them with agility
@joeschalley3689
@joeschalley3689 2 года назад
I'm not Chris but I have a few suggestions you could try. The first thing you need to understand is closed skill vs open skill training. Closed skill is repeatable and doesn't change in the drill. Imagine a free throw in basketball. No matter what all variables are the same. Open Skill would be the opposite. Look up the mirror drill. That's one of the best open skill drills available. You can easily make adaptations to that concept by making it sport specific. I hope this helps.

@batboy020876

It's maintaining your footwork. And when you're high school college and definitely pro level there's really no patterns that you need to"learn" and it wouldn't take them more than seconds to learn them anyway. It's a great warm-up drill and something that should always be incorporated into your workout every few days for 10 minutes a day. I actually can't believe you said this I agree with most everything you say except this video
@sunminkim299
@sunminkim299 2 года назад
Maintaining your footwork for what? As Chris said, the footwork used in ladder drills has very little to do with actual movements on the court and field.

@batboy020876
@batboy020876 2 года назад
@@sunminkim299 so you're telling me there's no actual footwork in sports why the heck do you think receivers in lineman take up salsa dancing??? Because footwork is extremely important and latter teaches you footwork and helps to maintain your footwork. It's technique and it's knowledge ALL knowledge is universal and is important! Oh here's an idea how about when we get to college, and we can bench press 300 lb does that mean we stop working out? Or just stop benching all together?? No I don't think so. You still live to maintain your physical size and your ability. Thus it's why you continue to work your footwork and that INCLUDES LADDERS!
@sunminkim299
@sunminkim299 2 года назад
@@batboy020876 I've never seen anyone tap their feet that many times while the distance that is actually covered is so short 😂. It neither resembles the kinetics of the steps during the feint motions used by wide receiver nor choppy deceleration steps in sports. In terms of speed, ladder can be effective only if you actually apply good amount of force into the ground and move your mass. It can be a good tool to be used during rehab, low intensity extensive work increase soft tissue tolerance and capacity or a good warm up.

It's really about the age of the athelete. There's nothing better than a ladder to teach foot co-ordination to youth players. Once they become preteens the balance and control should be there so it's time to move on
@batboy020876
@batboy020876 2 года назад
No you still have to maintain your footwork and if you're getting bored the ladder number one you're not doing the technique correctly and you need to up the difficulty level and that's pretty easy to do
@msarek4100
@msarek4100 2 года назад
@@batboy020876 true but it's not about boredom. It's what Chris is saying. The movement has to translate. I have a D1 soccer prospect girl who can destroy the ladder but it doesn't translate to basketball because the movement is based on angles and curls
