Found an ancient Mora in my grandpas belonings after he sadly passed at 96. I picked it up and remembered when I was a toddler we were driving down a country dirt road at winter, and he suddenly stopped. He had seen the perfect small christmas tree. Got out and said a few bad words as he did not find the handaxe in the trunk. But with the Mora and a pipe, he cut it down, and the tree was given as a present to my parents. Glad to have it with me in my car now, 45 ys later.
Thanks for sharing your story! That's another reason to hate the Moras, taking you back to a better time. I'm sorry to hear of your loss, my grandparents are all with Jesus now and we miss them too. I so appreciate your views, Stay Sharp!!
As to the pipe, not sure.. I had an uncle who saved his sweet tobacco for woods time but this may have been a baton.. In any case, Grampy would be proud! Stay Sharp!!
when i worked with property management as a teen in sweden, we each were given a fresh Morakniv and were told that if we were to break the knife within a week they'd double our pay. When i did what we call "lumpen" ( millitary service ) we were given the classic 2, im pretty at some point i loved that knife more than my family.
There are many knives more expensive than a Mora knife. I respect someone who collects beautiful knives. But if I need a knife that is practical, tough, and reliable, I would choose a Mora knife. In my opinion, when used during military service, camping, or working at a power plant, I prefer materials that can be repaired with a leather belt or a stone. (420HC ~ 440C, 1095)
The sheath is absolutely perfect for swedish winters , drainhole ,no leather that can mold if you have trouble drying it if you are out longer than a few hours and your staying place can not be heated. All a question of what is needed.
Thank you for watching & commenting. I'm sure Swedish winters are great, possibly like Canadian winters..? The scabbard for me has two jobs. Keep the user safe. Keep the knife safe. Big Jobs!! Drying and other maintenance items are for the user..? Also, this style is truly made like an after thought. Stay Sharp!!
@@survivalinstruct0r not quite correct, if you are making the annual reindeer migration in the winter that can take up to a month and going trough rivers you have enough trouble that a leather sheath can be a pain. Older ones had selfmade metal sheaths with drain holes . Leather is nice and good looking but also a pain if it gets drenched in such conditions. Its not an afterthought but a solution to a real life situation. When you finish the day and go to sleep besides the animals ( no house or hotel) and have a sheath thats easy to dry and wiping of and oiling makes more sense than a leather one that takes hours to dry in a warm environment , that you dont have at that time.
I love my Mora for the same reason I love my Smith & Wesson M&P Flipper Pocket knife. Super cheap, heavy duty beater knives that are up to any job, easy to sharpen, and I can give them away, throw them away, lose them, break them and I've got 3 more of each back home to replace them.
I've had the mora classic 2f since I was a kid. Still have it to this day and is by far my favorite blade. I'm in my late 40s now so I've had it at least 40 years.
Thanks for commenting!! I see that you & I share a common problem, how can we ever get another knife with this one taunting us.. Terrible!! Thank you for watching & getting the joke! Stay Sharp!!
Moras are great! The Bushcraft Black is one of the best knives i own. It's amazing. I have a Mora Classic with a leather sheath. It's my EDC knife with my Victorinox Huntsman. 🙂
The bushcraft black is maybe "worse" than the classic.. While I don't own one it seems to be the most Mora one can get. I'd have to start giving knives away if I ever got one.. 😉 Thanks for the comment and getting the joke! Sweet EDC!!
Thx for the vid! My Classic 2 is my fav togeather with bushcraft black. Is that nr 3 you show? would be a perfect arsenal to my backpack for food prepp :)
Thanks for watching! Yes, I am blessed with the #3. I'm of the opinion that the #2 is likely the perfect size. (I can't suggest that the smaller one is perfect since it is against my religion). The bushcraft black is one I'd love to try... BUT.. Hence the "hate". Thank you for commenting, "This is the Way." 🤪
They were on a bit of a popularity hiatus in the US for many years but they’re coming back as more and more people relearn about them. I’ve got my grandpa’s and that led to my owning several different Moras. Now my Scout troop is equipped with them.
bought one when i was 7 or 8, made a duct tape sheath for it and had been using the combo camping, hiking, and canoeing for over 20 years (a few minor fixes to the sheath of course because duct tape) also a fun project is to carve a design into the handle to help with grip
Even at a tender age you were developing a healthy hatred for this knife. Great story! Thank you for sharing it here, for watching & for Staying Sharp all these years!!
Thank you for the kind words, views and getting the joke. Sounds to me like you hate your Mora for a lot or all of the reasons I hate my classic. Stay Sharp!!!
For better retention in the sheath first find th point at which the bulge of the handle meets the sheath. Now. With about a one eighth inch drill bit drill through the outer face of the sheath. Next cuta very narrow wedge from the hole to the top. This mod intruduces a bit more springiness to the sheath and somewhat improves retention. This is obviously a permanent alteration so consider carefully before proceeding.
Thanks for watching! This is a good description of a mod that might really help someone to hate this knife even more!! Thanks for the comment and Stay Sharp!!
Thanks for the comment and the keen grasp. Stay tuned as this was a fun one to record & the interactions, like this one, are great! I appreciate your interest and views. Stay Sharp!!
Thank you so much for watching & commenting! We do our best to have fun and enjoy our biases. Most of which are based in the realities of the Atlantic Canadian Wilderness. Stay Sharp!!
My only Mora is a #3 classic. It is sharp, soft and comfortable in any position, warm even in Canadian winter, and so light that it is imperceptibly forgotten. It seems so fragile compared to my other knives, but it is nevertheless towards him that my thoughts and my hand always tend. Than you Stief for this refreshing video.
Hello & thanks for watching! That's a solid set of reasons to hate any knife. So sad to read your experience is similar to mine. Maybe one day I'll lose mine and be free of the curse. I appreciate your comments! Stay Sharp!!
Thanks for watching & you are likely right to be skeptical of the handle. IMHO, rat tangs and thin stock are not for batoning. Your Schrade is likely to be a better choice. Small bits = more success! Thank you for commenting.
The birch handle one is more expensive than the other mora classics because it has laminated steel. If you like the natural wood finish you can just get a mora classic and sand off the red paint, the appearance is almost the same because they both have a birch handle.
yeah .. swede here. I have lots of them. Cut myself in my frozen hand badly in the foret in the winter a few years back.. so when i work in the forest to resupply firewood or recreational i use the mora 612 with the small handguard
Thanks for the comment! For us, Sweden is a long distance but we are told that the forests are very similar with lots of coniferous trees. We hope your injury healed completely and thanks for the Views as well! Stay Sharp!!
One thing I don't like about the mora classics is they don't have handguards and with how sharp moras are and how good they slice I'm always concerned about my grablers getting cut especially if it's wet or my hands are sweaty
You are making a great point. I used the stones to gently take the edge & corner off mine. Still, you are correct. I'm sure we've all seen the models with guards but they are... Less cool. In any case, I appreciate your comments and hope to hear from you again soon.
Thanks for the comment! Sadly & for a lot or even all of the same reasons.. I would likely hate them all equally. The custom no.7 Opinels I modded are also terrible. How are you even going to get a $300 blade when those are what they are?? 😂 Thanks for watching & Stay Sharp!!
Nice sheath but , I have never gotten used to the idea of paying considerably more for a sheath than for the knife it was meant to hold . It's like putting $2,000 worth of rims on your 2004 Nissan . 🇺🇸😎👍
If the analogy was close, I'd agree with you. But putting a $60 classic piece in the $40 scabbard it deserves isn't lipstick on a pig. The classic really doesn't come with a scabbard IMHO. Thanks for watching & a great comment!
@@survivalinstruct0r I don't know where you are but , in my area the Mora Classic can be had brand new for $36 and that custom sheath would be about $50 or more . 😎👍🇺🇸
Trust me, I get it. The economy of Canada is strange. Thanks again for commenting, it makes the channel pop!! I hope you will chime in again as it's always a pleasure to hear from our Bros & Sis' from the South!
Thanks for the comment and watching!! It's hard when you have pieces that good though.. 🤪 How does one choose what to carry? I appreciate your "getting the joke"! Stay Sharp!!
Do you yet have a Stromeg Samekniv 8" knife? It's the knife issued to Norwegian military commandos for wilderness survival. It chops saplings, batons kindling, skins & butchers game, cleans fish and sparks a ferro rod. Between Stromeg, Martiini, Mora and Ontario Old Hickory I can not decide which one is best producer of fixed blade knives. They're all so very good.
I agree with you about the sheath. I'd rather have paid a few dollars more for a combo with the knife and an inexpensive leather sheath or a one-piece polymer sheath like they include with most of their other knives. The plastic sheath included with the Classic just seems cheap. That being said, I'm glad I bought one because it really is a good knife.
Thanks for the comment and watching! No question the scabbard is an "as ran" item. Some people have criticism for the leather one I commissioned but it truly makes the package into art! Stay Sharp!!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! We truly appreciate all of our international audience of adventurers! Love Monty bicycles from your city! Stay Sharp!
Also the Mora classic is great against bears, true story, one morning years ago when i was at a riverbank, just mining my own business..was carving a odin figurin. Suddenly a huge bear appears! He took my Mora and run off, eighter you or the Mora he said..ok take i said! dont have to be rude. ok he said..sorry but i need this in Winter, ok no offense.. ok where cool whit that but could have just asked 😁 true story i swear, bears collecta moras..
Thanks for sharing this amazing & scientific evidence.. People say all the time that they "lost so many Mora's"... Now we know where they all go, bears! I guess, the Mora's are.. "just right". Stay Sharp!!
Not to be picky but a scabbed is for a sword or dagger in definition, a sheath is for a knife even big knifes BUT this is definitely not a hateful video it's definitely a awesome one about why I love Mora knifes and why I own so many of them.
Thanks for the comment and watching!! Scabbard semantics are a great bunny trail & I'm sure we're all going to search it out for now. Good Stuff! Just another reason to hate my Mora.. So much controversy!!! 🤣 Stay Sharp!
I got my first mora when i was 5,still holds to this day. It’s definitely not the best knife for every situation but it performs well for pretty much any tasks. Thank you for a fun video, greetings from Sweden
Thanks for watching!! So glad you got the humor and enjoy your Morakniv as much as we do! Thank you also for commenting, it means a lot. Stay Sharp in Sweden, it's a nation on our list!!
That's a great choice you've made. Thank for watching and entering into the spirit of the video, I hope yours is as infuriating and loathsome as mine!! Stay Sharp!!
Thanks for watching! Thank you as well for the kind comment. My loathing of the Classic is the subject of legend. In the event you have one or acquire one, you will see that they make all others hard to enjoy.. Stay Sharp!!
Mora knives are not so common in Russia, but I took the MORAKNIV Classic No 3. I can’t say that this is the best knife I have seen, but it is definitely worth attention for a hunter. For my needs, I use the FOX knife.(НОЖ ЛИСА) I haven't come across a better one yet.
Thanks for watching all of way in Russia. I'm happy to hear that you are having a great experience. Would you be so kind as to share the URL of the Fox Knife you enjoy? My device is not translating well. Stay Sharp!!
Try BPS Knives, they make good knives and Moras Companion but full tang, carbon steel, sharp spine and blade plus nice 👍 leather sheath for $43 CDN at the door...Amazon.
Thanks for the comment and watching! This sounds like a solid recommendation and they look good. If I buy again, this will be a contender. I appreciate your investment in the discussion! Stay Sharp!!
ture story ! I have got a lot expensive knives but I don't like to use them because are they super steel and ect. always I grab a cheap knife for do something because I know the cheap knife is cheap:D and I dont care if this knife is demaged or loose the shap edge after 5 minutes shaving again ;)
Thank you for the comment and watching!! It seems we share a hate for this knife that runs deep. I hope there is some peace in knowing that you are not alone. Stay Sharp!!
Thanks for watching! I can see why you might think that but @fishercustomleather is very reasonable. Besides, this steel is worthy of a serious scaddard. Thanks for commenting!
I like the mora classic. Its good simple knife but be carefull there are extremely sharp. If you slip a finger on it even slightly by mistake it will cut deep. Anyways its a perfect knife for fine finess tasks like slicing bark off arrow shafts or bow staves. Its cheap too. And its tough enough for camping tasks even battoning thin sticks Yeah sheaths not great but the bush black sheath is absolutely horrible.
Good Day Adventurer! Sharks? That's a story that needs telling I bet! Thanks so much for watching & commenting!! It's an easy knife to hate for the reasons stated & now this one. Great Work!! Stay Sharp!!
@@survivalinstruct0r ... it's my best cutting knife... but not the best for battoning! It is very light, not tiring on the hand; the hand becames too slippery for my taste if wet, greasy or blooded, I opted do to little dots in it with a pyro engraver with a fine point... it improved the grip and looks nice. The sheath is ambidextrous and of good leather, but it must have been treated with some kind of repelent as, despite my greasing, it does not darks! The price was about 4 or 5 times of the regular Mora (about 80 $ in my country a few years ago) And it is a small model... 4 inch blade... yours seems bigger but it might be the optics effect on the camera. Thanks for sharing your experince and knowledge... stay well!
This made me look into steel and I discovered the god of modern metallurgy Robert Forester Mushet. Very sad story, he perfected the first process of mass producing steel, vastly improved railways and created tool steel/high speed steel along with other things (he knew that he'd make himself and his "partner" Bessemer rich) but his dream wasn't fulfilled and others made a fortune on his inventions.
Thanks for watching & self reporting that inspiration was found. Our goals are to make content that is not entirely derivitive.. Haha but we hope to inspire. Stay Sharp!!
@@survivalinstruct0r Thanks for the great review. Life-long mora user here. As much as I love the classic mora, there are good reasons not to put too much trust in the original plastic sheath. Doesn’t take a lot of jostling around to knock the blade loose, and then it’ll just slip or you may cut yourself reaching for it because the metal part of the handle ends up balancing on the plastic rim. Worst part is if that happens because you were sliding, slipping, jumping or taking a fall. I’ve lost a fair amount of moras in my time to those sheaths - so I began making my own a long time ago. Sometimes I’ll remove the belt attachment bit and use the closed tube as an insert in a leather sheath, with a proper flap or strap to lock it on place. That way I get the benefit of a sheath that I can trust and I get to still keep the blade dry and protected in rainy or wet conditions so it doesnt rust. Not too keen on stainless … :)
Personally I really enjoy the polymer sheaths. They do not get saturated in wet weather and have have a generous drain hole to boot. You can clip the sheath onto your belt or backpack with no fuss and with confidence. I own 10 mora''s and I would buy every single one of them again if I had to and I would buy every knife I don't have from them if I had the budget.
If the sheath is the issue make a new one…hey you can even buy a new one! The one it comes with is basically for shipping! You pay for the knife…if you want knife and sheath then pay more! Simple! Not a reason hate on a knife!
Thanks for watching! You are very right, the mic I have is good, but it ain't great. One take wonder! I appreciate your comment. Might be time for a Patreon..
I dont even have one (yet) , and i hate this thing !!! Why???? I just realized ive spent hundreds of dollars on knives that i thought i needed and know my eyes been opened up to mmmmm, ya i could have saved money and TIME ! Time i could habe been learning more skills!! Thanks!! Made me laugh!
So sorry for your situation. These blades are infuriating! You're adding to our misery by showing us all other, good reasons, to hate The Moras!! Thanks for watching & commenting!! Stay Sharp!!
Why do I hate (ok just really dislike) videos that I can barely hear with my volume up at max. I really like youtubes with good volumes that let me hear as well as watch. This one just aint there.
Thanks for the comment! Sound quality is an issue in the field, no argument there. We're looking at mics and once our supporters base reaches the level to invest, we'll all benefit. Thank you for watching! Stay Sharp!!
@@survivalinstruct0r A response like that deserves an extra 👍. I sometimes extrapolate on the forgotten manskill of meekness. It's antithetical to ego. Noteable examples are few. They include Master Yoda and Kwai Chang Cain (Kung Fu). The illustration of meekness is the sheathed sword carried by one who knows how to use it well, but never seeks out to show off or advertise that ability. Your comment has evidence of that rare quality. Long days and pleasant nights to you.
Wow. I would never have expected to receive high praise of this substantive magnitude via this medium. I appreciate your comments in whatever form they take & this one, I hope to live up to.
Carpenters knife no 1, i have a hatelove to the mora😊, best knife to use för carving ,as the classic was made for.. yours a little big in their line up. Good you didnt do as other rewiews..im just gonna bash the shit out of this, lets se if we can split the log whith this!...omg..its a Carpenters knife, as a Swede ive use moras for thi..i mean ive heard people doing this 😎and its not a Concrete blender either..
Thanks for the comment and watching! You're hate is much broader than mine even so you likely have broader experience.. Why Mora?! Why are you doing this? Subscribe?? Stay Sharp!!
That is quite misleading statement you made in the title of the video. It will turn people away from buying the Mora classic because not everyone will watch the video and just assume the knife is no good. On a side note, you can buy bushcraft 3V knife for $100. It's called Benchmade puukko. Pretty lame you were not aware of it since it's been around for a few years now.
I hate it as much as my opinel n10, and I'm French, way too affordable, too sharp, too easy to maintain.... Really a bad combo, for like 30€ you can have those two, how can I justify buying new knives.... 😉
I am happy to hear that you are taking solace, knowing that others hate those brands as much as you do. Opinels are so lite and customizable!! Loath!! Thanks for the comment and watching, Stay Sharp!!
exactly. luckily, the survivalist gang will cook up a likely scenario where you have to cut open an helicopter door then fight a horde of zombies then fell a 100' high tree with just your knife. that will justify a 2lb sharpened crowbar. aNd iT's fUlL tAnG
The key Mora issue is this: SS or CS? My advice: CS. Both will create sparks, so that is not an issue. SS will certainly stay shiny, longer whereas, no matter how well you treat it CS, will acquire a patina. However, my knives are for use not appearance. My advice, as said, go CS. The reason is that despite all your good intentions the time will come, in the wild, when you have to use your knife as a pry bar. At worst CS will bend, whereas SS will snap. Moreover the more 'supersteel' it is, the greater the chances of it snapping. A snapped knife in the wilderness is about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.
Thanks for watching & sharing this wisdom as a comment! Saying I agree with truth like this is redundantly redundant.. I hope you see what I did there and Stay Sharp!!
