That example is precisely one of the most inappropriate lines in the series, as Ami/Sailor Mercury is described as a sweet girl in Japanese and would never speak rudely. In this case, I feel that the attempt to Americanize her lines did not fit her because she is not the kind of person to speak in ingenious ways.

I'm just pointing out something that I find problematic, as that gives freedom to write whatever a company wants with disregard to characterization. If you excuse, then you can excuse if Ami had used a religious line mentioning God, Allah or any other deity, for exemple.
@@harukamoti It's simply a product of the 90s and children's animation back then. We've got the Viz dub now which is faithful so we can appreciate what the DiC and Cloverway dubs are for laughs now. I'm not even speaking out of nostalgia, I just think it's funny especially considering it's Ami who says it lol.
@@harukamoti It was accurate for the times, they had to make it relatable to the audience (Americans); thus the root dying phrase and though anime had a decent presence in the 90's (toonami/adult swim/G4tech tv) it went way mainstream in the 2000's. The consumption increased and with the demand they were better funded for translators and voice actors. Though Amy was supposed to be soft and kind she could be just as fierce as any of the other scouts. No one remains a placid lake once a rock is dropped in it. Just my opinion.

No! Hate it! Hate it! It's full of censorship, and Fisheye is not a girl! Viz stays true to the original Japanese, and I want to be respectful to the Japanese. Okay I admit, the Ghost Stories Dub sounds much better than the original Japanese.

The thing I rarely see people talk about is that Sailor moon is such a weird and goofy show, this kind of delivery enhances the quality for me. At no point do these voice lines feel out of place, even the infamous "He is tuxedo mask, I don't believe it" feels consistent with who these characters are. It's a show where a highschool girl has a sassy talking cat and fights monsters in a miniskirt. Also she's princess of the moon. ALSO her daughter from the future comes, brainwashes her adopted family and her love interest is a pegasus. It's cool if you like the other versions, but I just can't get into a show that's this goofy and also takes itself too seriously. The camp and cheesiness are what make the show and characters so lovable and memorable for me.
Indeed. It's clearly meant to be funny. I think the biggest problem people have is when they change facts and plot details. But amusingly enough when they change stuff that can make things even funnier in some cases. The humor is what got me hooked for sure. And it's really funny regardless of which dub you watch.
But Sailor Moon doesn't take itself too seriously, just as seriously as it needs to. Just because you find the premise of this obvious fantasy series "goofy" doesn't mean that everything in the series has to be treated the way you perceive it. The premise is one thing. The tone it follows is another. This is like watching Batman and saying that you can’t take it seriously because the hero dresses like a bat to scare criminals. If you "just can't get into a show" like Sailor Moon treating its subject matter sincerely when it needs to, then you haven't learned to suspend your disbelief. If there's one thing that the Japanese are good at, it's making a series of this nature completely ridiculous without being self-aware. You "rarely see people talk about" that because it's just the status quo for this kind of program, so they just accept it and move on. If the show did what you suggest, then there'd be no balance between the comedy and drama. I mean, how does a high school girl fighting monsters in a miniskirt make her reacting to the revelation of her love interest’s identity like a robot feel “consistent” with who the character is? Those two things have literally nothing to do with each other.
It wasn’t supposed to be a comedy anime though….this dub showcased how they clearly didn’t take this seriously. Despite your opinion the story of Sailor Moon is in fact supposed to serious and even tragic at times…. The takeaway isn’t supposed to be Looney Tunes in mahou shoujo form.
The thing is, the original was plenty unserious, and very serious when it needed to be. And it was intentional. The original dub was unintentionally funny at times, many times, due to poor quality control (most of these are just bad writing and bad readings of bad writing from BLIND FIRST TAKES). That in no way makes it better. It just gives us more to laugh at. But it the original weren't so good and so revered, that first dub wouldn't have happened. And if the first dub weren't shit, the second dub wouldn't have happened.

They had the Japanese scripts translated literally, but as one of the voice actors sort of said, there were a lot of things that they couldn't do on American television at the time. As for how "The takeaway isn’t supposed to be Looney Tunes in mahou shoujo form," this dub was geared towards American kids at a time when shows like Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs were enjoying great success, so DiC probably figured that including a brand of humor that said audience was familiar with would prevent them from being alienated from this Japanese show. Not to mention, some of the first magical girl shows featured Looney Tunes-esque humor. Context matters.
Because the VIZ dub doesn't censor anything, it kept all the scenes without editing, the beautiful original music, and Neptune and Uranus are not cousins, that's what makes it better.
I know the Viz dub hasn't edited anything out or changed important story arcs but the voice actors have little to no personality. I looove the voice actors from the original English dub, so funny!

@Sailor Moon Yeah and then they complain about the sensitivity, which I am glad they did as a child. We should be grateful for what they did for us in the 90s. But no people complain. I mean Serena favourite line "He is Tuxedo Mask I don't believe it!" In that robot voice is so funny.
While the censer committee did make a lot of changes in the 90s (such as changing the gender of some characters and making Uranus and Neptune cousins for example) this show was what introduced a lot of people to anime in the first place so it holds a special place in out heart in regards to entertainment. Even though the newer released series is more true to the original material i still seek out this version for the nostalgia.
@@TheManaTree777 In this case, I actually do think the censorship was for the best. Many people forget just how strict western TV was with not airing any LGBTQ+ content back then. I'd argue that if the DiC dub hadn't made the changes that it did, Sailor Moon would've never reached American television like it did, and thus many children in the US in the 90s and early 2000s would've never been able to see it, or gotten into anime at all. I think this was definitely a case where sacrifices needed to be made due to the era. Could they have done literally anything but make Neptune and Uranus cousins? Yes. But at the end of the day I guess everything worked out anyways.
@@celty_6835 seeing how strict was the U.S. used to handle shows like Sailor Moon actually makes more amazed by the fact that the Latin American Spanish dub for Sailor Moon was very faithful to the Japanese original, even keeping Haruka and Michiru's relationship intact, and that dub was made in the late 90s.
I do love both main English dubs- ViZ because it’s actually more faithful to the Japanese dub (and they actually gave us a dub of the original fifth season); and DiC because of its absolute absurdity with what kinds of lines were written. 😂

@@DarkOverlord96 Yes, because it wasn't even very good censorship. Nevermind that it was done at the request of the network and the FCC, not because they just felt like it. Standards and Practices have strict rules on the content allowed for certain intended age ranges and/or time slots.

DiC and Cloverway may be cheesy and have censorship issues, but you can tell the people who worked on it had a lot of fun and creativity. Viz on the other hand is just one note, trying to be accurate to the original as possible that it feels very bland, especially with the direct translations from Japanese to English that do not work. I’d watch the subs for the original experience over Viz, and DiC/CW for a good laugh/to have fun.
Not having hammy ridiculous lines isn’t being bland at all,the acting is solid and can be taken seriously unlike these cheesy dubs that aged like milk. A dub that is far above average is far better than two mediocre dubs that are carried by nostalgia.
@@Cr102y I can't take the high-pitch delivery of Sareena/Usagi seriously in that Viz dub. It hurts my ear. It's also kind of cringe to hear American people pronouncing Japanese names when the characters themselves look American or European. Doesn't sound natural. I preferred the 90s giving characters English names. But that's just me. Better to watch the original Sub if you want a faithful adaptation, imo. Maybe it's nostalgia, maybe not, but DiC/Clover dubs are still very fun to watch.
Idk if you all remember the specific lineup of toonamis shows back in the 90s because they did change. BUT I started watching sailor moon after school and always had to wait until thunder cats was done before sailor moon came on. It was nice because right after I would watch dragonball z and that entire time period was just an awesome time to be a kid.
It would have been so awesome if they had made a separate uncensored dub with these actors. I have listened to the new dub here and there and hate it. I watch Sailor Moon with subs.
But one point out of how many classic 90's lines and unique voices. This show was supposed to be humor and serious, but if the funny isn't funny to some they won't enjoy the show as fully. It'd be like a pepperoni and cheese pizza without the cheese, just sauce, pepperoni and dough. Doesn't sound appealing to me. Just my opinion though.
I will always prefer the Dic dub for my English version as well. This is one of the instances where I like both dubbed and subbed versions, but you can't get me to watch Viz's version. I checked it out briefly but the voices they chose sounded way too much alike and bland. I don't know how anyone can tell the girls apart without seeing mouth flaps.
You should give the Viz dub another chance. Most of the voice actors do a much better job than you’re saying and make certain scenes absolutely hilarious imo.
@@meerkat6684 I get that, but you can’t call the entire Viz dub’s voice performances bland without actually watching all of it. Usagi, Rei, Ami, etc. all have distinct voices from one another and do not sound the same like you said.

I think the Viz dub is the best thing to ever happen to Sailor Moon, but GOD do I love the original Hawk's Eye, Tiger's Eye, and especially Professor Tomoe. I still look up the old versions sometimes just to hear him, even though most of it is so bad 🤣

I miss this dub. I wish I could find it on an official release, but I keep finding the re-dub, which removed Luna's British accent, which is a crime against humanity, dignity, and all life on Earth.
My dudes, both have actual full band orchestras at cons to recreate the music. As evidenced by Roland's book, they had the budget in the 90s to hire actual musicians and actual orchestra members to record the music. Meanwhile the original bgm literally has midi file style synth pianos and violins.

The Japanese version is a soaring comet in the sky. DIC was a soaring comet that aimed for the stars, missed and fell to Earth like a spectacular meteor. VIZ just took a picture of the soaring comet and hung it on the wall.
I wasn't the target audience for this show, I was more interested in watching dragonball BUT it only came on TV on Saturday morning super early and I never woke up early enough, I always missed it. So, oddly enough , during the weekdays ,before school, they would air re runs of Sailor Moon every morning. So being so hungry for anything anime , I would watch Sailor Moon, and I really liked it. Looking back, I really loved the voice acting , they could be so dramatic and convincingly serious, but also very funny. So I became sorta a sailor moon fan and loved the series, just never really told anyone cuz none of my friends watched it, and I didn't know much girls that were into anime and the one girl I met at school that did like anime, she watched dragon ball 😂😂
