I’m almost 40 and I started taking TKD as part of my weight loss journey. I’m about to test for red belt, and I’ve definitely increased my flexibility. I wish I had started when I was younger, but I am glad I’m doing it now. (And I did read Brad’s book!)

I am a Master Level Tae Kwon Do/Hapkido Instructor. (pronounced Tae like May) Both of my Instructors have been Korean. I am 68 and it has made an amazing difference in my life. I still teach and train and have amazing flexibility. I am also a singer/songwriter/ author. The school does make a big difference.
@AusESL
@AusESL 2 года назад
Firstly, it’s not pronounced like May. It’s more like the British pronunciation of Mare. Secondly, doesn’t it bother you that you would most likely lose in a fight to a BJJ white belt or a half decent mixed martial artist?
@user-sg8kq7ii3y
@user-sg8kq7ii3y Год назад
@@AusESL You're probably right - a really good Tae Kwon Do person would likely get wrecked by a BJJ practitioner or a high school wrestler. But he's 68 years of age now. So, even if he trained in wrestling or BJJ all of his life, at 68 years of age, what could he do against a younger, stronger opponent? I know guys who were really good wrestlers and football players back in high school, but they're all now in their 50's. They can't do much anymore. Even the ones who are still in good shape, they can't do much. When they go running, they're running so slowly. They get tired fast, and they got all these old injuries to deal with. My point is that age will get us all. Did you see Evander Holyfield and Chuck Liddell in their last fights? Their skills are not even 1/4 of what they once were, and both are not even 60 yet. So even the best MMA fighters and boxers, at 68 years of age, will not be able to do much. I mean, look at some of these old boxers and football players. They're all slurring their words. They got brain damage, and many of them are so beat up that they can barely walk. Age will win over everyone. Age is undefeated.

Crazy T - Same difference in the end. Actually Tae Kwon Do, because of the emphasis on kicks, is akin to Savate. The French System of ‘Art of the Foot. Like it or not.

He explained it in the video, the school was called American karate but they were actually teaching taekwondo with a few other things mixed in such as boxing. That's American style. It's like schools that teach MMA, but they emphasize on grappling jujitsu.

I agree to all you said! I started K at 33, because my son was in it. I practiced for 8 yrs, 1st degree black. It helped build my self confidence so much! I became a single mom, worked in a mostly male occupation, and I was respected, not because of K but because I had learned to respect myself. Recommend it to all young and old.

Would be great to see a recommended warm up / warm down routine for all martial artists : whether it be BJJ / Karate / KungFu / TKD / BOXING. Not all have kicking or require box splits but do have in common a flexibiltiy and conditioning component - all above arts require that you maintain a high degree of freedom of motion for effective kinetics to be maintained.

I was doing MMA with Jiu Jitsu and decided to quit after a silly health scare. I started having odd pain in my throat, by my collar bone. I honestly thought I had a tumor or something. Turns out it's a not uncommon injury due to the mat work. I'd pulled some obscure muscle struggling to dislodge my opponent. I kept up the kickboxing, but had to drop Jiu Jitsu.
@J3unG
@J3unG 2 года назад
Yeh...some fucking guy didn't learn how to apply a choke properly and your windpipe got cranked on. It's not uncommon for a guy to have swelling in that area (soft tissue) after a short time after workout. Pro tip: tap out before the crank gets worse and fucking yell at the guy for trying to break your neck. Training shouldn't involve this shit. Also...the guy doesn't know how to do a choke on a carotid artery. He shouldn't be applying them if he is limited in his training. Throat chokes could kill someone. Unless you're down for that, don't do it and learn how to fucking choke properly.

I quit after Taekwondo after 20 years as my knees can no longer cope. Wasn’t aware my knees are misaligned, arches fall in. Now can’t kneel or squat because of having Chondromalacia patellae. Look after your knees folks 😀

I did Tkd for 14 years and i was always being told how good it is for the health, only what your not told is its dextromental on the joints and muscles ive been told i have arthritis in my kness and my knee cartilage is worn away although i enjoyed training in this art it was kicking in the air and pads which did the damage, if i had known way back in 2004 what i know now i would never had started training in this as both my knees are shot and will never be the same so as ive said many times before if a martial art instructor says its good for your health avoid it as its a shoddy way of getting people to spend there money on false advertising
@jamiearnold1711
@jamiearnold1711 11 месяцев назад
@@MaddogKernanmost knee problems occur due to incorrect stances (knees and toes must be aligned) or poor technique when kicking. Never kick full force into the air because the knee tends to hyper extend. Good karate isn't bad for your knees. Bad karate is.

I can definitely relate to Brad, I started MA/ Martial Arts at 10 years old 1974, I also caught the "Fever" disco craze and had Travolta dance solo from the SNF film down pat, (those knee drops were/are killer), Anyway, my MA training especially the stretching were/ are huge benefits as I have back pain issues, I unfortunately developed AS( Ankolosing Spodylitis/ fused spine) the past few years, After I got married had a kid my MA training took a Big drop, as I didn't have the "full time" to devote to MA training, But I never did nor will "quit" MA, When single I would train several hours in evening, now being married with a kid( not a kid anymore, son is 18 years old now), I "trimmed" my MA training to about 30 or 60 minutes a day 4 days a week or so give or take, Its different for everyone as far as scheduling etc goes. But I still consider MA a huge part of my life, My RA Dr is amazed at how limber and agile I am having AS, Dr has AS patients younger than me (57) in wheelchairs! To be more specific I trained in "Freestyle" Martial Arts which means Free from a set style ... Freestyle Btw Brad the action Martial Arts actor your trying to say is Jean Claude Van Damme Lol, one of my favorites along with Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris etc. Anyway, glad to learn about your Martial Arts history. . Kudos 🙂🙂🙂

I worked in the medical field but am now unfortunately on disability. I tell kids that they are lucky to have the internet because if they have an interest in any subject they can look into it and into careers related to there interest. I started off like yourself and worked many physically demanding jobs and often multiple jobs to take care of my family. My medical work was in the nursing field. If I could go back in time and had known about it I would have loved to have gone to PT school or Massage Therapy. I believe you posting some Martial Arts videos would be a great idea. I went to the kids karate and did the forms at the back again a week ago (@56), and it was such a good work out. I may stick with just doing forms (punches and kicks) or I may even go back to the adults club again. Karate is pretty much children’s daycare these days. As an adult unless you’re content with training with a class mostly filled with other people’s children that seems more like Elementary School PE, it’s not worth the cost. Personally, I actually got more training and exercise from a martial arts inspired class at the gym or an online app. (For far less cost)

I got the sense that the grading and progress in a martial art and the teaching of it and social contacts through it gave him the self confidence to look for the next challenge, learn more, and share it. Well, the thing is that the brain is dependent of the rest of the body, so staying bodily fit helps keep the brain fit, too. Teach children to move a lot, use their bodies and their hands, that is good for theoretical learning, too. Of course Bob and Brad are very smart, the astounding thing is that Brad could ever have had NOT been aware of it. That's the school system in a nutshell!

You two ARE inspiring, not because "if those two can do it I can do it", not at all, but you provide options and encouragement for all levels and reassurance that even we elderly can benefit from training. Then other more fit people can think that those exercises which are difficult for some are easy-peasy for them, and get a kick out of that... and when already older and more frail, you have just your own goals and are not competing anymore, just against your pain and decline and laziness. You ARE a great inspiration with good cheer and generosity! Top job done! Nice interview! Liked it a lot! Thanks to both of you!

I paid thousands dollars to the karate clowns for five years and ditto to yoga teachers for 10 years. In those days they had zero calisthenic knowledge and they set the bar very low...things like roundhouse kick you'll do from day one...or never. Its the length of your muscles and its something you're born with. I knew for sure it wasn't a lack of willpower. A sports doctor explained it to me for free years later. One thing that did help was 'the art of stretching' by Thomas kurz. Isometric stretching will help your kicking

I modified a form to include a 1 lounge and do that daily, followed by 100 suburi in Horse stance. My knees are stronger now even with twisted tibia- a Taichi injury. Before that I couldn’t get up from a chair, my knees were killing me!

TKD, done properly, will help you stay in great shape, but each instructor is different and some are not suited to teaching it as a holistic martial art.

So about the old people in your Tae Kwon Do class you ran, HOW exactly did their kicking improve? By what mechanism? Is it because body cells regenerate every three months or whatever and given time, if you stretch out muscle fibres, that will make them longer? Could they theoretically have (if they kept on training and despite their age) achieved the splits?

I remember aikido, I shook a relatives hand and the next thing I know im staring at the ceiling. Lol. I broke a few legs with judo.Just remember everybody's body deteriorates at different rates. Not everybody has to retire from marital arts.

Concerned about negative effects of training ? Try Wing Chun or FilipinoMartial Arts less high kicking more hands and very practical

Did karate for 6 years, quit from a knee injury (I got kicked in the knee in a poor quality competition, end of ACL). It consumes a lot of time, and after life changed never went back to it... Happy to have done it, happy to have stopped too.

I really like your videos and subscribe but what was the purpose of this one. I do not see how this has much to do with physical therapy. Did you quit because you thought the movement’s were injuring you? Is there a right way or wrong way to do martial arts? Or should you just not do them at all? Again your videos are great would really like to see your video on how to practice martial arts safely if you think you can do it safely

I know now why I love your channel sooo much. Started PT school at 34 after about 10 years at an office job. Told at orientation they changed it from master’s degree to doctorate. Ugh. Baby born week two (not good for the anatomy grade). Started Okinawan karate (not fake TKD “karate” 😉) at age 11 and now at 47, 6 th degree black belt. PT school is hard but if I did it so can others. But I think it’s much more difficult to get in now and expensive. Just spoke with someone about to start and tuition is estimated at $120,000. It was nowhere near that for me.

Aikido takes years of training to be able to apply it in real life situations. Better to teach them to kick someone in the balls and run.

I trained TKD for 20 plus years and now at 56 my hips are a mess. Other martial arts may be less damaging. Tae Kwon Do emphasizes high kicks and this can lead students to use extreme stretching routines. I wish I had a physical therapist in my class to help with correct stretching techniques. We used to do butterfly stretches with another student standing on our knees. This kind of thing may work when you are young, but you will see the error as you age.

Please correct the title. Karate is not TKD. Its not even close. Modern boxing comes from Karate in Okinawa. Tae kwon do is Korean and significantly less effective in a non armed fight. It can be modified and work great, buts there's probably 10 to 1 kickboxing or mma champions who used karate compared to tae kwon do.

It depends on when you studied. Taekwondo as a name was made 11 April 1955; when it started it was doing Shotokan Kata Pyung Ahn (Pinan = Heian) from 1955 to 1967 when they created new forms called the Palgwe (palgwae) from 1967 to 1971 then in further modification to the Palgwe they created Taegeuk, which has been the standard since 1971.

@@kevionrogers2605 time is irrelevant... Two different countries of origin, the stance and footwork is different. One is 90% kicks and the other is more 50/50 hand/leg attacks. All you gotta do is watch white belt katas (idk what its called in Korean) but its like saying judo and wrestling is the same thing.

@@arizonatea3734 Judo and wrestling is different story though I've done both & I'm a Judo coach at a Gracie Barra academy, and an assistant wrestling coach at a high school. I have black belts in Goju Ryu, Kyokushin, and Taekwondo. I know the history of Taekwondo, because my family has been practicing it since the 1950s when my grandfather served in Korean War. The Taekwondo he learned was called Korean Karate the original nine Kwans that established Taekwondo were all Karate Dojo; as I already stated above they started with karate forms before inventing new forms regardless how it evolved its origins is karate. The other forms they claim influenced Taekwondo they never list any teachers, schools, nor forms from those systems. Also they really don't have different countries of origin, because Korea was a Japanese colony when karate was introduced to Korea through the school systems physical education curriculum. Karate as a word was created in 1905. The first documented use of a homophone of the logogram pronounced kara by replacing the Chinese character meaning "Tang Dynasty" with the character meaning "empty" took place in Karate Kumite written in August 1905 by Chōmo Hanashiro (1869-1945). In 1906, after the Russo-Japanese War, Korea was declared a Japanese protectorate; in 1910, it became a colony of Japan, remaining a Japanese possession until the end of the Pacific War in 1945.
