Thanks for sharing. I’m a bit older (ahem) and I read to keep dementia at bay 😂 and 2)to escape reality 3)entertainment 4)education 5)discovery of self + others 6)because I’m retired and have time now! 7)it’s free! I get all my books from the library 8) and last but not least, my Mom (RIP) was an avid reader and it makes me think of her and carrying on her legacy. Happy 2024 reading!

I read for the following reasons: 1. Helps me think critically. 2. To educate myself. 3. To consider different views since many adults don’t want to do that. 4. I’ve learned so much sh*t about life that has opened up my eyes on so many things.

Reading literally affects your brain differently than watching a t.v. screen or a computer screen. There's a bunch of books on this, but I only have these two oldies: The Plug-In Drug (Marie Winn, 1977), Four Arguments for the Elimination of TV (Jerry Mander, 1978)

Right. I read Four Arguments for the Elimination of TV (Jerry Mander, 1978) way back then in the 20th century. It really stuck with me. I still think about it occasionally. Another one like that is The Disappearance of Childhood by Neil Postman. That one goes even deeper to the difference between text and pictures photographs and moving image media.

@@tickledtodeath0 Oh! That's good to know💫 I got a third of the way through The Disappearance of Childhood a few years ago - thoroughly enjoying it - when the spine fell apart😢 Now I'll make it a priority to replace it soon🪴 - (so I never made it to the part about the effects of TV on one's brain.)

I am a huge reading addict, reading for me, takes me away from life's stresses and when those thoughts in your head are raging at you, to read focusses the mind on the book you are reading, the characters, location and quietens everything. Great video.

Let’s take a moment to applaud Oleg 👏 👏 Those are some clean fucking seams!! I’m not a sewer but my mom sewed my whole life and I watched a lot of sewing shows growing up (I’m also a no-cable-pbs baby). I couldn’t do any of the stuff myself but I’d like to think I know good work when I see it haha

Happy Belated Birthday, bday twin! 🎉 I love to read because I like seeing other people’s perspective of life. I like being in their heads, but also because books have been there for me in my toughest times. I remember being depressed..my days consisted of reading, binge eating and sleeping and nothing else. The Twilight series kept me company during those dark days. I would read and reread them which is why idc how terrible ppl think Twilight is.. it’s a comfort series to me. Now the movies are that to me as well as Harry Potter movies. I plan to reread that series soon!

Happy Birthday! It is interesting that you write this. I have been getting myself to read more, even listen to an audible on my way to work each day so that I can learn and just get inspired. I have noticed that since having kids some of my hobbies are no longer important and so I am getting back into some of them so that I can feel complete. I have set a reading goal for the year and I even started working on a 1000 piece puzzle. These things entertain me in ways that I need.

happy birthday!! 🫶 reading is so unique and special and personal and i lovee the house metaphor, i feel like reading a book is an neverending conversation between the author and each reader and it’s an opportunity to add a unique perspective to an idea etc etc i could go on and on!

This is such a great video! Happy birthday fellow January Queen! You and I watch movies and tv shows on the same way, genuinely not afraid of a spoiler… I agree with all these points, all 10/10 why I read (with the exception of being an actress, lol that’s super niche)! Really enjoyed this. Also I have that exact glass!

A late happy birthday to you! This video truly could not have come at a better time- I just had a really bad experience with my roommate and it was so stressful that I nearly got sick. But watching your video distracted me enough for the bad vibes to drain out of me, and I cannot thank you enough. But here are some of my reasons for reading, in no particular order of greatness: 1. Escapism. Of course, you can't go wrong with a new world. 2. Confrontation through the other. Sometimes it helps to face some of the shite you've been through through reading about other people who have been through that shite. 3. Understanding history! This is a big thing for me now in my degree. There are some books that don't necessarily fit as aesthetic pieces/I don't particularly like them, but reading them allows me to peek inside the minds of people who DID like them. Robinson Crusoe was not my favourite book by ANY means, but the fact that it was a curriculum book for centuries of English boarding schools means that there is value in analysing how they may have been influenced. The same goes for Heart of Darkness by Josef Conrad, my beloathed. 4. Aesthetic joy! This is the biggest, and most unpredictable one. I love a book that makes me think of poetry.

Happy birthday, Ana! I read for distraction, enlightenment, comfort, excitement, ye olde vicariously living through fictional (or real people). I may watch movies for the same reasons, but the cognitive processes that are required to comprehend and enjoy a book vs a film yield (subtly) different experiences and evaluations on those texts. Some stories may make a more positive impression on you if you listen to them vs read them; other stories or concepts make more of an impact via audio + visuals.

Hi Ana, Happy Birthday, and Many, many more ! I started reading to escape. I was always a shy, nervous kid. When I was in grade school we had a teacher who would read a chapter a day of Hugh Lofting's "Doctor Doolittle", I loved hearing her voice ,and the wonderful story that she also enjoyed. As a young girl I started reading the Gothic Romances, such as Jayne Eyre,Wuthering Heights, Rebecca, etc. I would fantasize that I was a part of whatever novel I was reading at the time. My books were my protector of sorts, they would take me away into the world of the protagonist, and a whole new atmosphere, and environment. Now, I read for entertainment. I love to hear from other readers, what their favorite books are! It helps me decide what to read next ! By the way, You are so brave to be an actress ! I could never Put myself "Out There" in front of people ! Wishing you success in your Acting career ! Happiness, Cindy🌻

i love to read because it challenges me (to visualize, to think through concepts, to empathize with people i may have a hard time understanding at first, also to focus on words on a page lmao), because literature is a source of beauty and comfort for me, and because it helps me develop tools with which to interpret the world and the people in it (i feel like we're all part of a conversation that stretches back for millennia, and reading is like getting context for it, almost like turning back the clock and hearing a snippet from the conversation that happened before you even entered the room) thank you for this lovely video :)

Your final reason is eye-opening! I read for a similar reason-to gain empathy, basically lol because I feel I need more empathy!!!!! I also read because sometimes books are the only “people” in my life who get me, if you know what I mean. And reading is relaxing. It depends on what you read but reading can be a very “treat yourself” activity. It’s an intimate activity that brings me closer to others and myself

i feel the same way about connecting more with books than TV or movies!! i’m so engaged with the books that i read but i lose interest so fast in a show or movie. i think it has a lot to do with the focus that you have to have while reading and the imagination aspect of it like you mentioned! loved this video :)

One of the reasons I read so much is that I find it very soothing & relaxing, regardless of the contents of the book. It forces my mind, which is normally all over the place, to slow down and focus. I've used books to keep calm ever since I was a kiddo, when you wouldn't catch me ANYWHERE without a book. I've started doing that again now that I'm in college, bringing books with me everywhere even if I don't think I'll get the chance to read them, and it really does make me feel better about life to at least have the option to read at any given moment.

I gather what you're saying is you feel close to the author, a closeness you can't get easily with a live body. I am a sensual reader, I feel soothed by the rhythms of the writing. In the past I would feel bad after putting the book down, totally bored, tortured. But these days it's not that bad. I think it's necessary to have a plan b and mine is guitar, for when you are tired of reading, though I love writing and drawing too. I am also a very good actor and currently have the world fooled I'm sane, lol.

i definitely started reading as a kid as a form of escapsim, reading felt like something that was completely mine, rather than tv that was shared with family and almost always accomapanied with irl family drama going on the background lol i could read a book and know that it was all completely mine inside my own head - then i think somewhere along the way reading became a way of appreciating language and all the crazy things it can do

I'm almost fifty now. When I read anything, these days, I ask myself: Can I live without it? Usually I can. I realize when I reread my favorites, that they are pointing to something which supercedes them, or which I had apprehended whether wrongly or correctly to have done so. What I want is something scriptural, true. Ecstatically true. Rare. Exceptional, universal. Paradoxical. Pure. Vivid. Indispensable. Quarky.
