Why I Say "NO!" To Modern Running Shoes

Modern running shoes are marketed as being able to prevent running injuries and as improving your performance. I look into these two claims and decide whether this is true or not.

I made the switch from the modern running shoe to Vibram FiveFingers in mid 2018. I am sure that minimal shoes are the way forward for me. The ground feel, the ability to move my feet etc. There is no way I can replicate the same in other shoes available in the market. My calf muscles are better defined because of the range of motion they go through on each stride. The arches of my feet too look a lot better defined now. All as a result of letting my feet move and not stay stuffed inside a box of sponge/cushion. I think these shoes have helped me stay injury free and thus enjoy running a lot more

I started running last year with torin 4.5 plush, and now that i think about it i feel like i was just sold something because they were just coming out. After mile 60 i realized that my low arches needed stability because i couldnt complete 1 mile without my arches throbbing intensely, so i got the hoka arahi’s. Now i can go back and forth between the two and actually give my arch that structure it needs without full dependency. Its very nice to have ride options!

I do my easy running in Altra Torin 3 or 4 shoes. I have stayed away from Altra Torin "Plush" models.

I have enjoyed the plush model for the most part, but I can understand what you mean.

as a long time runner using modern running, 4-5 different pairs for specific workout types, I can basically call myself a veteran in the field of shoes. I do believe that modern running shoes are good for a specific purpose, running. not walking, and not long term, everyday wearing. I currently use the Hoka Rincons for recovery, the Salomon Supercross for trail running, the ASICS Evoride for tempos, and the Nike run swift for ground contact. whereas I just use a basic spike for track/speed work. However, when walking I do actually use LEMS barefoot shoes or sometimes FEELGROUNDS which are two companies that do a really good job at making barefoot shoes look normal.

I am a big fan of LEMS. I have not checked out FEELGROUNDS. I will go and do that. Thanks!

As I told in my latest video, I did a 5km PB in my beloved Saucony Endorphin Speed on a loop with sharp corners. Those shoes have a huge stack and are not stable at all so my ankle/shin had to work very hard to compensate. And they have been hurting for 3 days already. They hurt more on the right leg, which makes sense as I was running clock wise

Congrats on the PB, but yes, those shoes are made for running fast straight ahead or with mild cornering. But that is why they are a racing shoe and not necessarily a daily trainer.

love it, but arch support temprorarily? Really? do you need or used arch support? I use some hard insoles to give my foot the proper "behavoir" and I use it with minimalist shoes and love it, I dont like to not use them... but I will try just to give my foot the chance to strenghten itself.. just a couple miles to test...

Great video, like how you showed they do have a purpose but not for everyday. My problem with this the thicker the sole the harder I hit the ground. This is a me only issue I think

I think a lot of people do the same thing. They lack a feeling with the ground when there is so much stack height, so they pound little harder without realizing it.

I work in a running shoe store. I base a lot of my recommendations on the article from Niggs et al. 2015 in BJSM about preffered movement and comfort as the best predictor for injury prevention in shoes. I never sell "stability" shoes to younger people. But a lot of older people, especially women enjoy a more stable ride. Inserts are also very popular. I never sell inserts as a must have, rather as a cruch as you say. Personally I run in neutral shoes, but have recently got a lot of post. tib. issues. Hate having stability shoes/inserts on but right now it seems like the way to rehab the injury according to the available litterature. Most elite runners run most of their mileage in more built up shoes, especially today when high stack carbon plated shoes are abundant. But most also run with spikes at least a couple weeks/year.

@@michaelgohner6031 Yeah, great article. It really confirms my idea that multiple shoes in a rotation is super helpful, as you'll find comfort different every day/run.

I’d rather let my son wear ultraboost but walk bear foot at home. The altra shoes might be good for running, but they’re so ugly that he will be mocked at school.
