What do we really know about mosquitoes? Fredros Okumu catches and studies these disease-carrying insects for a living -- with the hope of crashing their populations. Join Okumu for a tour of the frontlines of mosquito research, as he details some of the unconventional methods his team at the Ifakara Health Institute in Tanzania have developed to target what has been described as the most dangerous animal on earth.

my dad died in USA, state of GA last April from West nile virus. He was 5th of 6th reported by CDC in 2016. He was a healthy man, got sick like the flu then went to meninges and brain within a week and he got acute flaccid paralysis. He had a long 6 months on life support/ventilator and from one mosquito bite he suffered horribly until support removed. He could only nod or blink eyes for communication. It paralyzed him from neck down. He couldn't smile, weak face muscles. Horrible. With West Nile, his motor neurons were destroyed but his sensory remained therefore he could feel touch but couldn't move. Unfortuntely, I do not think there is enough research on West Nile.

I am so proud of this African brother doing such a wonderful work. You can only tell how dangerous this animal is by experiencing them. I can say with boldness that since I relocated I have never fallen sick for 2 days straight. Keep up the good work and please connect if you can.

Fredros Okumu's TED Talk on why he studies the most dangerous animal on Earth, mosquitoes, sheds light on the importance of investing in research to combat malaria. Malaria remains a global health threat, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it disproportionately affects children under five years old. Okumu's work on developing new strategies to control mosquito populations and prevent the spread of malaria is commendable. His focus on innovative and cost-effective solutions, such as using odor-baited traps and mosquito-repelling fabric, shows the importance of approaching complex health challenges with creativity and collaboration. One ethical principle highlighted in this talk is beneficence, or the duty to do good and act in the best interest of others. Okumu's work exemplifies this principle by seeking to improve the health and well-being of people at risk of malaria, particularly those in low-income and marginalized communities. It is inspiring to see researchers like Okumu dedicating their time and expertise to tackling global health challenges and making a positive impact on people's lives.

I'd like to know why these mosquitoes choose those specific locations for breeding? Is it for geological reasons? Ecological reasons? If we find that out, won't scouting the other breeding regions using patterns of similarity be much easier?

I believe am different type . Would like if can be used to find out why am.like this måyb am prone/ resistant

Apparently everyone is more obsessed with the fact that he called mosquitoes animals than what he actually talked about. I think one of his most interesting points was when he pointed out that very few mosquito species out of the total number that exist on earth actually carry diseases, so eliminating them may not completely upset the balance in the ecosystem. Btw mosquitoes are animals. Insects belong to the kingdom animalia.

The mosquito is not an animal, nor is it the most dangerous insect. The protozoa the mosquito carries is the danger. In the northern half of North America the mosquito do not carry Mylar is. Therefore the are not dangerous. Glad you a helping you country.

Mosquitos alone aren't that bad. They're just annoying. It's the diseases they carry that make them so dangerous.

Lions alone aren't that bad, they're just lazy. It's the big teeth and claws they carry that make them so dangerous
@Wheelygonzales
@Wheelygonzales 6 лет назад
Hi I don't see how that is relevant to my comment. Claws, teeth; they're part of what makes a lion a lion. Mosquitos do not need diseases to be mosquitos. And domestic dogs and cats have fairly large teeth and claws and are very capable of seriously injuring a human being, but you can find cats and dogs in millions of homes all over the world.

Don't you think eradicating mosquitoes enhances the human domination over other organisms??
@Nebby-vg6kl
@Nebby-vg6kl 6 лет назад
We as a species have dominated the earth in such a way that all of our actions have global systemic consequences. It's something we can't change. Because of this we have to be stewards of the earth and try to figure out a way for us to exist without destroying our environment. This doesn't necessarily mean that we have to save all species.
@amoghdeshpande505
@amoghdeshpande505 6 лет назад
Nebby1989 If our aim is to save the mankind, why can't we use our knowledge in science and technology in altering the life of human (developing technologies in fields such as Gene alteration, Gene editing, etc) instead of disturbing other species...... So that other organisms develop their own technique to sustain in this world..... According to humanity there should be competition but not domination and bitter fact is that human is dominating.
@Nebby-vg6kl
@Nebby-vg6kl 6 лет назад
We have no choice but to dominate that's just how we have evolved, no one has control over the entirety of the human population. We probably will alter our biology at some point to make us more compatible with the earth but until then we need to try to be stewards.
