I’ve had the exact same wear patterns on mine. 17000 kilometers (10600 miles) in total on my machine, 2 rear tyres consumed. Nice and interesting video.

CanAm doesn't want you to use any other tire but theirs. It's all about money and they try to scare you. I have been using car tires on my Spyder RT for years and have never had a problem. I have had good luck with Bridgestone and Pirelli tires. I have 28,000 on the Pirelli tires and they still look new and I run 80 to 85 mph all the time on the highways here in Texas.

A car tire is stiffer and can affect the handling. I have never had an issue how ever if there is an accident and the manufacturer said it would be ok then that would open them up to a very big law suit. That is why a lot of dealers will not mount car tires on a spyder.
@busyflyin

We just got our Spyder a month or so ago, so I'm new to them. But, I ran car tires on the back of my Goldwing and it's the only way to go on that bike. It's been termed "dark siding". I had fatastic success with car tires.

The problem is over inflation, my book says 17 lbs, I don't get that ware pattern, I have both a 2008 GS and a 2014 STS Spyders, neither tires look like that... the first 11 tires I replaced on my 2008 was because it was so easy and fun to smoke them. Now that I have gotten weary of replacing tires, I ride with out smoking...lol High presume causes the center of the tire to bulge out, thats why the center wares out before the sholders ever contact the road.
@2wrdr
@2wrdr 4 года назад
I've run car tires on 2 wheels several times. Here is the thing for me though. When you do this don't buy some $60 tire. You are already going to save a lot by going to the CT. Go ahead and purchase a high performance car tire like a V rated or at least an H rated tire. You will in return get a better built tire with a little more traction as well. As alway JMO and YMMV literally.
@spyderryder

I have used a cheap tire and did not like it. It came off the spyder. Great comment!
@toddjacobs5660
@toddjacobs5660 5 лет назад
Ive used nothing but a car tire on the wifes Spyder, they work great, CanAm dont want you to know more than they think they know, its a money thing for them....i told Moore Tires in Rockfalls, Illinois to put the hardest compound tire they have that fits the rim of the Spyder is what im looking for, that thing never slipped at all, even on wet pavement, also for people buying their first Spyder, good rule of thumb, 23 psi all 3 tires, worked good for me, tires lasted longest...especially if you use a car tire because they have more steel belts ...

According to the master Can Am tech I take my RT/S to, he said it's because of the steel belts in the tire. If someone runs them down below the wear indicators it could blow out and the spinning steel belts can shred the underside of the spyder.

@rev9fan1
@rev9fan1 6 лет назад
There is a thing called tread wear rating, look for the lowest one, the lower the rating the softer or stickier the tire is. Like you will see some tires say 300AA or 700AA, the 300 had more traction. Hope this helps.

Hi, I agree that the original rear tyre should last a lot longer than you are getting, and at first the idea of fitting a car tyre seems a reasonable choice. However, I have some concerns, bear in mind I live in the UK so laws may be different. Tyres are rated not only for speed but also for weight, impact loading etc. The manufacturer of the vehicle in this case BRP will spend an awful lot of time and money developing a tyre that gives the best 'package' for most users. Some performance tyres may be very sticky and grip very well, but as a result they wear out very fast. Other vehicles may have very hard, long lasting tyres that do not grip so well when driven hard. Also, in the UK fitting a tyre that is not approved for that class of vehicle would void your warranty and your insurance. I am all for saving some cash if we can, but maybe an alignment check might be in order, I see Shaun Smoke who works on Can Am products recommends laser alignment on a regular basis in his vlogs. All the very best and stay safe....
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 6 лет назад
+BonnevilleTB7 thank you for watching. I have had 3 spiders and have put over 100,000 miles on them I understand and agree with everything you said. I have never had an issue with warranty with using a car tire. BRP will not cover any issues with using a non OEM tire. I tire to use a tire that his me everything I need. I do ride on the harder side so I need the tire to have very good dry and wet traction. I need a tire to last more then 10,000 miles. So that is why I use a car tire. Beofre anyone uses a car tire they need to do there on research into what there needs are. Its not an alignment issue is the OEM tire does not have enough plies and the tire grows in height at speed. Thank you for your comment it was a great one.

@spyderryder
@spyderryder 6 лет назад

@robertmanning4675
@robertmanning4675 5 лет назад
Hello, I am planning on getting a spyder, since the shop will not mount a car tire on it who will do it for you? Plus I wonder how much grief I may encounter with the shop when service is requested and they see a car tire on it?. I wonder if they would refuse to work on it at all? (granted I will not make the change until after the warranty period runs out) Any feedback is greatly welcome.
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 5 лет назад
I remove the rear wheel myself and take it to a local shop and they always change it out for me. I have never had a certified BRP shop give me grief about the tire. But that being said if you have an issue like a vibration or something like that they probably won't look at it.

DANGER! DANGER! WILL ROBINSON! A taller skinnier tire will lead to less cornering stability if I get one I'll put the lowest profile tires I can on it and if you have a problem with your tires it says right on them lower or higher then rated psi will cause tire to not wear right and is dangerous they also have a estimated mileage life if the tire wears out early some thing isn't right and a good tire shop will tell you whats wrong and if everything like the tire pressure is right then they should replace the tire at a discount imo
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 6 лет назад
The tire that BRP puts on tje back of the spyder is very soft and wears very poorly. That is way people install a car tire that can support a lot more weight with a lot less air. I think the rear tire can support 1500 pounds or more so I can drop the air to 22 psi and not be concerned with it not having enough air in the tire. Thank you for watching!

The front tires arent bad at all. I think I got 45,000 out of the front ones. It would be nice if the rear tire was made with the same material and life expectancy is the front!

You CAN and probably should use car tires. Pay attention to size. It could affect your speedo reading and if you're pushing that '10 0ver' thing, you could be ticketed and your speedo shows you're inside the limit. Experience is a great teacher. Buy GOOD tires. How much did you pay for your Spyder? And you can't afford really good, quality tires?????
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 6 лет назад
+John Smith with this size difference in 1 mph off now it was 3 off. I normally get the kuhmo but the shop said they could not get it anymore and I rushed the process a little. I still like this tire more then the factory tire. The ride is better and the traction is better. I got a good deal so under 18,000. With back rest windscreen and shad bags. When its time to replace this tire I will do a little better homework.

They only say you can't run a car tire so you spend more money. It's foolish really. You've been doing it and NO PROBLEMS. If you go with more PLY's you will get less wear but it won't grip the road like a sport tire but I seriously doubt you will slip ANYWHERE.

with the factory tire so close to an automotive tire the only thing you give up with using an automotive tire is maybe a little traction. The positives using a car tire out way the traction you way loss. If i had a two wheeler i dont think i could go to the dark side!

+Coy Hilton a harder compound does not mean less traction. I get a better ride longer life and don't give up and traction with the tires I go with. That being said everyone needs to do there own research. I do thank you for your comments so people can see both sides.
@coyhilton9137

Actually my comment was to help some to understand the tires and why they ware because some don't know why you should I use the recommended air pressure, and in the video it's stated that they use 23 to 26 pounds rather than the 17 pounds that Can Am specs ! So the user is stating that he is over inflating his tires, but says he is not.... frankly, I don't care what tire, nor what pressure is used, I get good ware on my tires...... when I bought my first Spyder for three years I got crap front tire ware on the out side, until I aligned the front end with lasers, that fixed that problem, oh by the way, I didn't get 7000 miles on my front tires until I aligned it. Now they have a machine with lasers to align them.... so it was not a general comment , I was trying to help

Adding a much harder compound you're giving up safety and control. The fact that even you agreed the factory tire has more traction when worn should tell you something. So tell me is your wife's and your safety less important than a few bucks ? There is a reason any sane tire dealer won't install a car tire on a motorcycle, and there is also a reason why a manufacturer recommends a particular tire. I have seen people with car tires, and they were just like you, so proud that they were saving a few bucks on tires, but they slid off the road in curvs, or lost control because their car tires didn't stick to the road like factory tires do. Did you read the part of the manual that says to run 93 to 95 octagon gas in your spyder? Yes it definately makes a difference between 83, and 93 octain, do you cut tjose corners too? If you can't afford to ride safe, I suggest you sell your spyder to someone who can....
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 6 лет назад
+Coy Hilton the main fact I run a car tire is the long jevity. I would have to replace the factory tire every other month. I ride my spyder very hard and have never ever had a traction issue with the rear tire! Thank you for the comment.
@waynegare9854

Our biggest concern should be BRP. They recently tried to force spyder businesses to increase previous inputs from the factory. Any that refused because of bikes left over had their franchise cancelled and cannot even get parts to service the machines they sold during the previous 10-11 years. Montana now has only ONE dealer left apparently. I have purchased 3 spyders and 3 can am 4×4's from a dealer. It was the closest spyder dealer, 55 miles away. Now because of the BRP decision, the closest dealer is 92 miles. What kind of loyalty is this to the small dealers that have been responsible for the big company success? I for one will not buy another BRP product even though my wife and I planned on 2 new spyders next year and another snowmobile this winter. If they have no loyalty to their dealers they sure have none to the consumer either.
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 5 лет назад
This is news I have not heard from anyone. I will ask my dealer about this when I pick the spyder up in the next day or so. I can say in Ohio they have not pulled any BRP products from the dealers!

So according to you why don't we buy softer compound tires for our cars if your worried about your familys safety?
@spyderryder
@spyderryder 5 лет назад
You can but they would not last very long. So they had cool things to the tire to help with wet weather traction and longer life. Being soft is just one part to it.
@etcflyers3760

The Kenda tires are not good, average life is a miserable 9-10k where a good CT will go 35-50k. My last CT went 46k on my reverse trike (not spyder) One key element is to keep the pressure DOWN. 12.5 to 17 on the front does not mean 25psi - 15 is about right and 20-22 on the rear max. And by all means stay away from RF tires as they are unsuitable for all vehicles. The tire on the far left was definitely way way over inflated, middle tire also over inflated this is 99% the rider fault not the tire. Tire expansion is not the issue that only applies when you go over 200 mph. Try tires-easy.com as tire rack is not a good place to buy tires.
