Follow me on the quest for perfect shoes - part 1.1: Charles Tyrwhitt after 8 months
More about shoe care: • Active shoe care with ...
I used to be a regular customer of Charles Tyrwhitt, spent approx. 1000 Euros last year.
Until I found out about the quality of their shoes... and their "customer service"...
Based on my experiences I have decided never ever to buy Charles Tyrwhitt again - and have never looked back!

The tip is a very specific point of wear when it comes to stiff shoes Just nail on some metal plates and those are more suitable for everyday use.

Metal plates seem indeed a good way to protect the tip. I have yet to try them, next time one of my shoes needs resoling I will consider that.

I can’t take this guy seriously. The shoes aren’t made for the way he’s used them...
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 5 лет назад
Bryan Natividad that would mean they’re not made to be worn once, sometimes maybe twice per week to the office, being treated with good quality products (by Burgol) and being worn more than 7-8 months...
@bryannatividad575

The Mindful Gentleman Im not saying you’re wrong. You did purchase shoes from a shirt garment brand... which hasn’t been around for centuries, but rather over 20 years maybe. If anything, I’d only purchase shirts from CT. Nothing else, you wore the shoes over their capability. They’re great at the shirts, to me, but I’d never get anything else from them with the exception of accessories. It could be great quality, maybe just get the soles fixed back up from someone else.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 5 лет назад
@@bryannatividad575 I think you have a good point there. I agree that CT is good for shirts, etc. - but their shoes are (based on my experiences) of a lower quality than all the other makers in this price range (also the newer companies). What also annoyed me was that, after receiving a faulty pair to start with, the next pair broke some 6-7 weeks after the "warranty" expired. And they showed no sign of goodwill or leniency to somebody who spent roughly 1000 Euros in the past year with them. This is just not a practice that I want to support in a company. Hence I agree that their shirts, etc. are good, their shoes aren't - but I will probably still stay away from them/their shirts because of the way I was treated. Just my personal opinion... :)

Leather soles are not meant to be worn outside on rough surfaces. They are for office wear on carpet. They are meant to be changed into once you get to work otherwise the leather sole will fail as expected in less than a year. Leather soles are one of those luxury things that are not practical in actual use. Most people just put on rubber soles or add a half sole.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
Hi D S - you are absolutely right with what you said about leather soles - and I have kept that in mind. My issue with these shoes is though that I have treated the same way as my other shoes (also with leather soles) and while problems with soles arise sooner or later, the CT shoes showed them MUCH sooner than all other shoes (with leather soles) I have ever owned...

What do you expect? Soles aren't made for a lifetime. Resole them and keep this nice shoe
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
I'm aware that shoes need resoling every now and then. But I never had shoes that needed new soles after such a short time and after such a low number of times I wore them. Even shoes that cost half the amount usually last me much longer. AND the shoemaker I took them to confirmed that their quality is not as high as Shoepassion (which I showed him as well) - while costing almost the same. I'm not saying that they are not nice and I keep them of course - but I won't buy CT again (or recommend them to anyone else for that matter). So my opinion stays the same - I am disappointed with the quality of the shoes and that of the CT service - just my opinion and I dare say my rather reasonable expectation of a shoe from that price segment.

150€ for a pair of shoes should last at least 5years not 8months. Crappy quality indeed

Leather soles do not fare well against most surfaces. From what I can observe in the video, the leather sole appears to be coming apart from regular wear, which is a common occurrence in many shoes with leather soles. This seems especially so because the leather sole is coming apart on the same spot on all your shoes, which indicates that the way you walk wears particularly hard in one area. Considering the above points, it is very unlikely that those shoes are defective.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
Thanks Dennis Cheng for your comment. I agree that the top of the shoes is more prone to wear and tear - in my specific case and in a lot of other people's case. And leather shoes do indeed not fare well against various surfaces. However, I never had problems with shoes and/or soles (leather or otherwise) after such a short time. As a matter of fact I bought a pair from Shoe Passion approx. half a year before the CT shoes and a pair from Bugatti another 6 months prior to that - and with neither of them did I encounter these issues after such a short time. Sooner of later the sole will show wear and tear, no question there, but I took very good care of all these shoes and the CT shoe are the only ones with these problems. And this does not take into account all the other pairs I have bought prior to that (over the years). Shoes that have cost half of what CT is charging have lasted 2-3 times as long (before and wear and tear started to show). In addition, the first pair CT sent me was definitely defective, even CT agreed to that. I also dare to say that the soles of the shoes in the video are defective - wearing shoes on average once per week, treating them with sole oil, applying passive care, etc. etc. and ending up with this result right after the warranty period ended is, at least in my eyes, a defect The shoe maker I brought the shoes to further stated that the Shoe Passion pair (I brought for comparison) would definitely be of a higher quality. So all up I stick with my opinion. For the money CT is charging there are much better alternatives. I also like to stress that this is of course my personal opinion. Others might disagree or might have made other experiences with CT shoes - but I can also judge on what has happened in my case - which led me to no longer being a customer of CT.

@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 5 лет назад
Jakub Rosiecki personally I like Shoepassion. Similar price to CT but better quality. Not sure though whether they’re available where you’re from. I also heard good things about Loake (a bit up in price from CT), never tried them though. Meermin a reasonably priced but I wasn’t convinced with the quality, the shipping is the highest I’ve ever seen and if they send you a faulty pair (as they’ve done with me) you can pay the shipping back as well. So definitely not Meermin!

The Mindful Gentleman thanks but Shoepassion is slightly too expensive for me. I’m looking for shoes at around £130. Do you know of shoe embassy? I’m considering buying their Churchill shoe in chocolate. A second opinion would be greatly appreciated :)

I think you are completely wrong about CT shoes. I have a couple of shoes from them and they have served me well. Yours might be an exception. CT isn’t as bad as you portray them. Check how you used them. Did go cricket playing with the shoes.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
No cricket. I wore them once, rarely twice a week to the office. I further stored them in a specific shoe rack, always had shoe spanners in them, treated them with special sole oil and took all the necessary precautions. ALSO: I am not saying nobody should but CT - I only stated that I, personally, have decided not to do that anymore. If you have good experiences with them I'm honestly happy for you. But I made the experiences I've described in the video. I also first received a damaged pair at first before I got the second pair - which I have sent back to CT and their answer was that there is nothing wrong with the shoes. Both pairs could of course be n exception but that is not what CT's answer would indicate. A local shoemaker also commented that the CT shoes were not of the same quality than the (similarly priced) shoes from Shoepassion I've showed him. Overall: this is my personal opinion based on the experiences I've made - nothing mor and nothing less.

Are these GY welted or Blake stitched? I would tend to avoid cheaper shoes with leather soles as the soles will be inferior quality and there isn’t much value in resoling. I bought a pair of CT’s Keybridge Loafers in their clearance recently and wasn’t terribly impressed even for the low price I paid for them. I have bought a few pairs of their casual shoes and the quality seems highly variable. I bought a pair of penny loafer / deck shoes which are excellent quality but another pair of deck shoes I bought from them was much lower quality. If you are going to buy shoes from CT, look out for their ‘Lasted in England’ shoes in their Clearance section - they are made by Barker and are a bargain when reduced.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
They say goodyear welted but... I was thinking exactly what you said - to try their "made in England" line... On the other hand, there are so many other good shoe brands... I like Shoepassion for example and am keen to try other brands - so I'm grateful for any suggestions!

Charles Tyrwhitt is a shirt maker. you go for them for dress shirts not shoes, hence why you have such a bad experience with their shoes. Also since some people here brought up leather soles. Don't get leather soles for shoes under 300 dollars. Its not worth it unless its a Meermin. You will want to replace the sole of a shoe (if you wear it everyday) once every 1 to 2 years (of course this depends on the quality of the shoe, I am mainly talking about shoes that cost less than 400 dollars), and sole replacement costs between 100 to 200 dollars. So if your shoe only cost the same price as the sole replacement, its not worth it unless you really love the shoe and it have sentimental value. You might as well buy a new pair every one to two years. The good news is, if your cobbler is good at sole replacement, sometimes the new sole will last longer and is better than factory original.

there is a seriously worn area on the outer part of the shoe very visible.the stitching is also gone...this shoe has been subject to abuse.how about the other shoe?i have a 8 year old pair of these and they are super tough.i cant imagine what caused that kind of wear.
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 3 года назад
As mentioned before. I have taken very good care of the shoes, sole oil, wearing them max once a week, shoe spanners, etc., etc. The other shoe is not quite as bad but also damaged. I have never had this kind of problem in my entire life, and I take pride in taking good care of may shoes. The shoe maker I took them to told me that this is not the type of quality that I usually bring him (e.g. from Shoepassion). I thought I did get a "sunday pair", but then the first pair I received was already damaged and the next pair didn't even last 8 months. CT said there is nothing wrong with the shoes, they just need resoling... Anyway - this is how they looked like after taking good care. CT refused to take further steps. So I chose not to buy from them again. I must say though, that I do still like their shirts.

The reason why red carpet is being rolled out for them. It is not for the goodlooking people inside the limo, it is for their shoes ^.^

You shouldn't go crazy with the sole oil. Most people use it wrongly and damage their shoes. It really is not absolutely required and if you wish to use it in order to extend the life span of the soles, I hope you haven't used it more than once in that time!
@tacticoolgent1784

Bro, that's a wear point on your shoes. Granted, prob not the highest quality soles for that price, but you did get 30 plus wears from them. I only buy Charles Tyrwhitt shirts for work. For the price, best I've seen. Back to your shoes, you wore them out and expected another pair, dang, entitled much?
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 5 лет назад
I received a faulty pair to start with. Next I received a pair that despite being treated very well (and not having been worn that much) got damaged faster than any other shoes I have ever owned... So, whatever I expected I did not get from CT...

I've already explained many times: wearing them once per week, taking all the necessary precautions, taking very good care, etc. should not result in this. And has never lead to this with other brands (which was backed by my cobbler), so in my opinion and in the opinion of the cobbler who has looked at them they were faulty, not just worn.

What the hell. This guy needs to get his facts right. A leather sole is not designed to have that much use. Those soles are torn to shreds. He probably used them in wet weather. Go and learn More about shies before saying stuff like this
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
Ethanmusic2001 Read what I answered to the other comments. I said it time and again that I treated the shoes/soles with the utmost care. I know how to treat shoes and soles. If I had not treated them well I would deserve nothing less than what happened to the shoes - and would not have mase this video. But I took all precautions and yet the soles looked as they did - which has NEVER happened to any of pair I’ve ever owned.

perhaps a lack of knowledge! not liking a product by charles tyrwhitt fine but to put that in the title like all their items are shit is disrespectfull i own shirts v necks and cardigans from CT and they are excellent products for a decent price plus did you even do knowledge on where to buy shoes? CT is not famous for shoes you shouldve looked at places like meerin loakes allan edmunds etc
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 2 года назад
I did not say that all their items are bad, I am presenting my experiences with CT shoes. My shoemaker has confirmed that the quality is not to the standard he usually sees from me, while the price for the CT and the other shoes I brought in are is in the same ballpark. So less quality for same money. My main concern though was the way CT acted to me as a very good customer. I gave them plenty of opportunity to rectify the matter but according to them it was ok that shoes that I wore maybe one a week (maximum) and took good care of looked liked that after not even 9 months. It is up to every one now to make up their mind - I have made mine, as stated in the title.

Well my friend I can understand your point of view.. Unfortunately you made the mistake of overseeing the brands intention. Charles Tyrwhitt is a shirt maker and just like all companies they started with shirts and make the best damn shirts for the price. If you want an amzing shirt that will last for decades you wont go to CT either. You will go to ETON or a Tailor. I am not saying that you have to live with the bad quality of their shoes but the launch of an entire fashion line ( Shoes in this case ) is typical for brands like CT. You need to be able to compete with the rest. Buy your shirts and Knitwear , highly recommended by me , at CT , or maybe even a tie , items that they craft well! Shoes are an art and it is damn hard to make a really good shoe , especially with the material that you have shown.. Clarks and many more will provide and satisfy you with the quality you need, for the price. Keep beeing a customer at CT , but learn from the mistake that the shoes are just not crafted well. Thank you for the tip , actually wanted to buy chelseas at CT but will not do so then. Never the less it is a great store for shirts and knitwear! Have a good one Cheers
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 6 лет назад
Thank you for your reply! I agree that CT makes decent shirts for the price but I found not only the quality of their shoes terrible but also their "customer service" and that applies regardless of the type of product. Also, if they charge 150 bucks for shoes that last not even as long as cheap discounter shoes I don't agree with their business model. So I guess I COULD keep buying CT shirts an knitwear BUT for me (personally) I do not like doing business with companies like that - but that's of course something everybody should decide for themselves. But again, I appreciate your comment and am always grateful and open to new (brand) suggestions! :)

That's normal wear! Is that your first pair of shoes ever with leather soles? Sorry, can't take you seriously!
@themindfulgentleman121
@themindfulgentleman121 3 года назад
Normal wear and tear would not cause this kind of damage after approx. 8 or so months during which they have been used max. once per week (mostly indoors) and have been very well taken care of. They have not been my first (or last) pair of shoes with leather soles. I am well aware of the special requirements leather soles bring with them - so I took every precaution (incl. but not limited to special leather oil). And whether you take it seriously or not does not change the facts outlined in the video and in my replies here. Bad quality is bad quality - and this was also backed by the shoemaker I have taken them to and who knows me and how I treat my shoes.
