Just moved away from Vermont (I moved there for school in 2020, then back to Washington a month ago). I can definitely back up what others are saying: Vermont has a shortage of decent, available homes right now, and people moving from out of state or rich people buying up houses for winter homes aren't helping. An interesting note though: Vermont was very affordable for me, and rent seemed very cheap everywhere, but that's because I'm from Seattle. I wouldn't be able to get an apartment here for what my apartment in southern VT was. However, wages are also more where I am, and so even though it might be cheap for you to move out of state, it isn't cheap for native Vermonters. Personally, I couldn't stand the cold or isolation. But that's my personal thing.

@Claudia Macias I've lived here 20 years, you'll be fine. Especially in a place like Burlington which is slightly more diverse than the rest of the state. People don't use the term "flatlander" maliciously, it's kind of a joke tbh. The only place I'd consider avoiding is Rutland area since the heroin epidemic is still big over there (and some of the poor rural places in general). It's unfortunate but as the video said, violent crime is almost non-existent so no need to worry about that, just some druggies.

I moved to Vermont 12-13 years ago. I worked for GE Healthcare. I was hired on in Seattle and one day they came in and said I would work from home and be put on a team in Vermont. Being in my twenties I gave it a shot for my career. Working from home was hard. I now work from home ironically. Things I was shocked by moving here... Taxes. It's difficult to find afforable housing if you cannot buy. The cost of additional education is also expensive. So as much as he touts things here, I'd say be careful. It's really expensive.

Definitely visit a few potential places first or remain able to move around a bit. Hyperbolic RU-vid videos can give you an idea of what is out there but cannot capture the feel of a place. Personally, I think a mid-sized city is a good place to start. Burlington, VT is at the small end of that scale. Montreal is close weather and landscape wise but a good size larger.

The only reason for the influx in 2020 was that Vermont had the highest vaccination rate and lowest covid infections. Vermont is anything but affordable, let alone buying local which is much more expensive. State tax, housing crisis, and laughable to say that most Vermonters are making "more than enough" to sustain living here. In fact, all I keep reading about in the local articles is the struggle to attract and retain young people and families and the crisis it poses for the retired and aging population (oldest state here) as in median age. A great place to live, yes if you're wealthy, retired AND enjoy brutal winters. Let's not forget the ballooning opioid and mental health crisis too....

It is nearly impossible for an honest hard working person to survive by themselves in or near Burlington area because it is so expensive. Its It's ridiculous. After this winter my plan is to camp out all summer, just to save enough to live indoors next winter. I've had to do it in the past. Having lived here for half a decade, I can say that Vermont is a lot more complicated than this video makes it seem. VT is crazy expensive to try to buy a home or rent an apartment right now. When I was living in St. Albans (City, not Town - although the Bay is nice when it’s not overrun with gnats), my rent was on par with NYC prices. No hyperbole. The jobs are also not so lucrative on average, which makes the 802 even more cost-prohibitive. Lovely place, but certainly not everybody’s cup of tea.

@_KITE

@@calvinjohn26 Winters are generally cold, but it really varies year to year. It tends to fall below zero in some parts of the state. I remember experiencing blizzards in Vermont; six years ago, for example, the visibility got so low that I struggled to see my own hands. However, this year, hardly any snow has fallen by comparison. The weather is spring-like, by our standards. As for how much a chef can make, I am not sure. I think it depends on where you work and what you cook. I do not know much about the business side of the culinary world, but I would imagine that a very skilled chef, the sort that does catering for events and such, would make more than a chef at a diner with low foot-traffic.

As a person who has grown up in Vermont, went to college here and still currently lives and works in VT, this video didn't mention that there is an AFFORDABLE housing crisis that we continue to experience all over the State (no rentals available and those that are have hefty prices) as well as an AFFORDABLE child care crisis (wait lists and exorbitant prices) that is also impacting residents here. Yes, there is fiber optic progress here but it hasn't happened very quickly and in many areas, you still cannot get any cell phone service while on the road. I also worked for 4 months in 2020, for the US Census Bureau and Vermont is the SECOND WHITEST state in the Country. The state lacks diversity and there is racism here and white supremacy groups. Also, the public transportation is very limited unless you live in Burlington, otherwise you have to drive everywhere. If you are on a fixed monthly income, you many want to reconsider moving here, it's very expensive.

Ahh yes, everyone is moving to Vermont. No wonder the population is decreasing every year. Vermont features a high cost of living, high taxes, high winter costs, and limited job opportunities, not to mention an egregiously overbearing vehicle inspection that occurs yearly which if you're broke you are flat out screwed. This state I once called home for so long is a beautiful place to visit but a horrendous place to live and this video creator clearly does not understand the underlying problems with trying to make a life work in it. This video comes off as stock footage and wikipedia statistics rather than a firsthand account of life in Vermont. Now this won't be the case for everyone, especially if you managed to land what few career jobs there are or are retiring. However, if this is not you, then please save yourself from the trouble. All of the positives of Vermont will amount to absolutely nothing unless you're well enough off. Please heed my warning.

They both have about the same population, 10,000 or less.. The people seem very clickish and unfriendly to newcomers (unless you click with the right people by chance like I did in Huntsville), , but on the avg the people aren't very friendly in either place.

Who is moving to Vermont? I live in Vermont and see people leave all the time. I've got to call BS on this video. Vermont is a beautiful place to visit, but we pay a lot of taxes and the cost o DC living is horrible.

I agree. Absolutely. We are declining in population. Running a business is very tough. Once the tourist season is over. Our volume can dip as far down as 50% in some areas. Not enough locals with expendable income to sustain a healthy economy. Yes, the cost of living is disproportionately high. Rent is down right ridiculous. We can't find staff to fill positions. Because we cannot pay them enough. Young people are leaving for many reasons. It is a beautiful state 💓

We moved here from Florida in 2019, just a few months before Covid hit. I'm originally from New England so I knew what to expect but Vermont has exceeded my expectations. We absolutely LOVE it here. The kids are thriving, the schools are terrific, nature is breathtaking, and the farm-to-table movement is fabulous. We grow veggies but also buy from local farmers, things like maple syrup, grass-fed beef, local potatoes, apples from local orchards, etc. We are never leaving.

@@Cafe1981 this is a very good point. Bc of how the economy is the cost of living to income ratio is way out of whack. Nyc prices in burlington with just a median income of about 53k a year. In comparison little rock ar has a very similar median income but cost of rent is about a third of the price. So its relative. The pay here does not match the cost of living. And the availability isnt there. I dont see how anybody who comes of age is going to be able to stay if they so choose. For me the weather is NOT for me. I hated it even as a little kid. Im moving to mississippi in 2 weeks. Another thing i havent seen anybody mention is in my looking at other states for housing i just realized how old the housing is here. My house was built in 1895 and my grandmothers was built in the 50s. I always considered her house a newer house. But in looking at housing options in mississippi and also in texas and tennessee. An older home or apartment is considered to be built in the 80s or 90s. That was kind of surprising to me just coming from a perspective of such old housing

I wanted peace and quiet and wanted an exit out of the city life. I am in the northeast kingdom so things are very in diff here as opposed to maybe Burlington. I love it here and don't want to leave anytime soon and I live a humble modest life for the most part.

Moved to VT from MI last year. Cost of living seems very comparable unless you are looking to live in Burlington or one of its richer southern "suburbs". Renting costs more than owning right now. Lots of shister landlords and investment firms lording over the rental market. My family bought a fixer-upper because we plan to stay long-term. Absolutely love it here!

@josephschaffer2716
@josephschaffer2716 2 года назад
@@0zeldalink0 I live closer to Burlington, but I can tell you this. Montpelier is a beautiful place, the traffic is nothing compared to Detroit, and the people are generally friendly. Lots more white people, but the culture is laid back and open. Politically, Vermont is kind of purple. Everyone knows Bernie Sanders, but we have a reelected moderate Republican governor. You have your fringe idiots on both sides, but the state is much less polarized. The two parties work together and you can have civil discourse with just about anyone. Vermont is weird, but totally awesome IMO. Glad to be able to raise my daughter here. Winter is colder and snowier than we have had in SE MI for a decade or two, but there are endless winter activities to pursue.

@josephschaffer2716
@josephschaffer2716 2 года назад
@@yousosilly9817 where the hell do you shop?! Peppers are like $2 max and lean beef is like $5/lb at Hannaford. I agree with the rent tho. My wife and I bought a place because the bloated mortgage is less than we were paying for rent a month. If you can find a place, prices are comparable to Michigan. We made more than we should have when we sold our place in Michigan. Bought for more than we should have in Vermont. We know we will lose equity in the short term, but it washes out because we bought high after selling high.

Vermont is not a diverse state racially, nor ethnically. More than 95 out of every 100 persons you will meet in Vermont are white. There are very few blacks ( 1.2% ), Hispanics ( 2.1% ) or Asians (1.6%). There is no indication that these percentages will change over the next 3 decades either. So depending on one's perspective , this could be a plus or a minus. Just wanted to share this info for people thinking of moving to one of the whitest states in the USA.
