I can’t thank you enough! Your instructional video is the greatest! For years I have been using a long involved process to transfer my photos from my iPad & iPhone to my external hard drive for storage. (Send photos to Google Drive, download them to my laptop, save them to a file, & finally copy them to my external hard). You have saved me so much time- I really appreciate it. And next time I’ll follow all of your links- I first bought a different flash drive & it didn’t work; I returned it & bought your recommended SanDisk & it worked right out of the box just like you said. I am an amateur photographer & I have hundreds of photos that I want to save & easily move around so I really appreciate your video! 😀
For those with issues connecting more than a pendrive at the same time , important to rename the pendrives, if 2 pendrives has the same name it won't work , seems that it's not detected but actually the issue is that has the same name that the already connected. Also remember that NTFS it's not supported , change into Exfat and solved ( for files more 4GB)
Three years later….. you’ve saved the day once again my friend!!! After all of the tips and tricks I’ve got from your videos your channel has always just been in my suggested videos do to the search algorithm and I just now realized I wasn’t subscribed so boom!!! I am officially subscribed and hitting that notification!!!
My Samsung type c pen drive not showing in my iPad mini 6 with type c. Neither in files section nor somewhere else. Why?? Even though I tried many times
Good solid advice Pete! Just spent about four hours trying to get a FAT32 SD card going. I used the same adapter as you, a sandisk SD32 micro card, sleeved in a full mini-SD casing/adapter. Anker multi USB 3 hub, it’s got a power ‘brick’ with it. The dream of putting an SD card into a usb adapter, then just slotting it into that genuine Apple usb 3 adapter still brought up ‘too much current’ warning. You won’t say it so i will…Apple are at it. My home has £2,000 of Apple kit, they’re doing ok, do i really need a whole chain and a power brick of tech, to use an SD card?! No, it’s a decision. Thanks pete. [EDIT: So the only SD card I could get to work slotted into my Anker brick-powered 7-gang USB (oh, ‘hub’ if you must) was the one formatted in a DR-680 Tascam portable digital recorder. £600 new. That’s an expensive SD formatting unit! My venerable Windows PC with it’s updated SSD primary drive, said all my SD cards were already FAT32, but it seems there’s FAT32 and FAT32. Honestly. With Garageband iOS dropping midi notes when recording even it’s own instruments, it’s testing my faith. I love GB ios, but am forced to use Cubasis 3.3 now- just to make sure the recording or midi track doesn’t butcher my arpeggio and mollicate my triads. You don’t want that ‘appenin’ of a Sunday marnin’, do ee?!]
hi pete, i bought an ipad pro, i download photos from an external ssd to my ipad, i can view them in files app but not in the photos app, any ideas? i tried from an sd card and photos recognizes it and can download them there, but from a hard drive i cant, its very frustrating!
I have a iPad 8gen and I’m try to connect a 4 tb sea gate hard drive to it the hard drive is in xfat format and I have the genuine apple adapter with power added from a lighting cable still not popping up in files the hard drive has iTunes files on it I’m not sure what the problem is ?
I’m using a usb-c to usb which connects straight to my WD passport, there is no additional plug for power. Do you have a suggestion for what to do in this case? Thank you :)
Thank you, this video answered my question and demonstrated what connector I will need. I was concerned the other port on the adapter wasn't a power "hole" but was a camera port or some other "hole" that couldn't allow me to charge while I used my iPad and USB files. This video told me AND showed me so I thank you for that.
Hey I have a quick question! So I recently bought the usb to iPhone adapter and I plugged in the usb flash drive with a bunch of my videos that were exported from my PlayStation right, but when I go to files on my iPhone, the video appears as a JPEG image instead of the full video….. when I plugged in the usb onto my Pc, I see the videos appear in max quality….? Why does this issue apply to me and is there any solution?
Wait so I have to formate my usb to Mac iOS format. But if so, how do I place my file from windows to this usb ?(since the usb will be iOS format ). Help !!!!
Pete do you know why files intermittently corrupts when transferring files like photos and videos from ipad to flash drive? When I transfer photos and videos from my ipad mini 5 to my 8gb sandisk flash drive, some of the files that I transfer gets corrupted (can’t open the specific file) OR the photos that i transferred just turned into a complete mess. Atm i don’t use the adapter nor the flash deives ‘cause some files might corrupt again. Do you know why some files get corrupted? Seriously need help!
I don’t know why, but to avoid this I tend to zip up multiple files to one zip file. It seems to avoid many of the corruption issues I see being experienced. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QzC6J8F5W9M.html
Ok thank you so much! I think you should make a video about “how to avoid files getting corrupted while transferring from flash drive to iphone/ipad”. I think it’ll help a lot of people since we’re not the only ones who experience this kind of issue. Anyway, thank you thank you for this solution!
OK still does not work I bought a 128 gb usb drive off amazon and tried every way to get it going. I put the usb drive into the lightning adapter but i guess i have the wrong adapter because mine says HDMI on it :( damn
Hey there! I have some recommendations over on my gear guide here. studiolivetoday.com/gear This one is cheap and reliable - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3Zyb1ISy3wk.html
Hi There, I am having an issue connecting my external hard drive to my 2020 iPad Pro. My external Hard Drive is password protected with Mac Password, it is showing on my Macbook Pro but not on iPad Pro, if you could help my this that would be great! Thanks in Advance.
hey I have a question is it possible to install drivers from a mouse to an ipad pro 4th gen? I have this gaming Bluetooth mouse and wanted to see if it was possible to use it on the ipad. it connects fine but cant install the driver for the customization. its the venus pro mouse btw. I downloaded the driver from their website but don't know how to install it
Hey there. You can use it in standard mode but no, drivers for custom features aren’t supported. This video has more details. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PJCGENM7zj0.html
Great video, but no one ever discusses which portable batteries will work. I have two and neither will work when trying to power a USB drive using the apple adapter. I have also noticed that you must use the larger charging cube that comes with iPad for it to work, you cant use the smaller cube that comes with iPhone. My guess is that the portable battery must put out power thats equal to the larger iPad power cube. Ive tried researching which portable batteries will work for this in order to have a truly portable system, but I’ve yet to find anything. Maybe that would be a good video... testing which portable batteries will work. I’m using an iPad Air 3, got it in 2019.
Yeah right. I might need to do some more testing on this as all the ones I’ve used have worked thus far. I must admit that I usually use a powered usb hub these days. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-54XHAYDvHps.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic it could very well be that one of my portable batteries is to old, but the other one is new, so who knows :) keep creating the videos, I enjoy watching.
Thanks for the response Pete! I guess y question is, do you have any idea why my iOS devices aren’t accessible as a storage device like a portable drive or usb device. I used to be able to access my photos and videos through my pc but now it says that I don’t have the permission to access it.
I have different issue. I’m using this flash drive on iPad Pro 2020. It worked properly and suddenly it shows the drive but doesn’t show the files on it anymore. If you could help I’d be grateful. Thanks
@@candyvanityheals7715 they take off my was working but i dint have time to use it and when i connect it again it dint work im trying fo get some videos
Same thing happened to me. I used my USB for about a week, then one day it stopped showing the files and said error. When I took the USB out it won't even show the USB name anymore 😪
WD My Passport 2TB won't show up on iPad mini or iPad (both up to date with iOS 13.6) using the correct apple adapter, plugged into Canada home outlet using Apple 10w USB Adaptor. USBs showing up fine, just not my WD or an old Seagate. Is it a power source issue? That's all I can think of... thank you!
Hmmm.... sounds like a power issue. Some of those old USB bus powered drives used a bunch of power. A powered USB hub might help? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-54XHAYDvHps.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for the quick response! Just picked up the WD so not sure how much power it pulls. Might be a silly question - but what is the difference between using a powered USB hub versus just plugging into an outlet with a standard lightning charger?
Hi. I can view the files on my hard drive but can’t write. It’s showing up as ‘read only’ do you know anything I can try I have an iPad Pro generation 4 12.9. Thanks
@@PeteJohnsMusic I'll have another look. I thought it must have been because i could read from it. I bought a new hard drive and have the same issue. They're 2tb
I've reformatted the new drive as exfat and it looks like it's ok for writing. I'm just transferring my data from the old drive and I'll test out editing. Thanks very much. This is my first ipad.
using an unpowered adapter and a 8gb “crucial” thumb drive, it is recognized and works perfectly for about one minute before being declared an unsupported accessory and is rejected. any ideas?
But sometimes it working but sometimes not Sometimes usb lightining or only have blue light I am sure everything is connect good but sowftware sometimes acsept and somethimes not
Yes, I was wondering how you got to the screen in frame 2:12 ..?? The same screen that on the left under browse locations shows you when your drive comes up. I really appreciate it!
@@PeteJohnsMusic This was also the problem I was having....how you got from the Home Screen to the screen that showed the USB files on it. I found an iPad user guide online and their first step was “open the files app”. 😁
Need help. My USB flashdrive is a FAT32 and I have music files on the flashdrive I'm trying to play on my Ipad Generation 5 with 14.2 update. None of my music will play. The file will open up but nothing is playing. Is' there any type of media player that needs to be used or any app that needs to be used to play the music?
Hi, I’m trying to open my photos from Seagate hard drive to my iPhone. I’ve bought Apple lighting adapter and it’s not working. You’ve mentioned about converting the hard drive file, can you explain more on this. Thanks.
Hey I have an iPhone 11 with way too many photos I’m trying to transfer them onto a USB, using the lighting to USB a camera cord but my USB stopped coming up on my phone and it’s a hassle, apparently iPhone 11s can’t take USB 3 Any help with this? Would the cord your currently using with extra power work better?
Hi I have followed all of the advice that you recommended and bought all the same devices that you have. I have a seagate 1T and I had someone format it with exFAT as you said. The first time I connected to my iPad it worked perfectly and I found all my info. The next time I plugged it all in it only shows when I remove the device briefly. So I recognises it but won’t show it in the options. I’m not sure what to do next.
That’s a strange one? Have you tested other drives to see if it’s the setup or the drive that’s causing issues? You can also ask the other awesome creators over at the Create Record Release Facebook group. createrecordreleaae.com
It’s a sea gate T1 expansion hard drive. Should that make a difference. It works when I plug in my iXpand USB’s. Strange I could see everything the first time I put it in. I have 2 of them and it has happened to both. So it must be something to do with the hard drive.
I was excited after seeing this video to have found a solution to my file transfer problem. Files backed up onto my Seagate 1.5 TB flash drive from my MacBook Pro. I bought the USB to lightning with external power adapter as recommended in this video. OEM from Apple. When I plugged in the flash drive it started to read, the LED light lit up, but then it crapped out. Light went out. Drive tried again, and again, and again But, ultimately, device would not load onto iPad. iPad is running iOS 15. Seems external power adaptor solution does not work with some or all Seagate external flash drives. Beware.
Hey there. You can, but the transfer rate isn't super quick to be honest. I tend to use WiFi drive options to transfer larger files. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FVWVlGtK4rY.html
Ok so I can’t really figure this out... I bought an HDD 1TB Western Digital 2.5” External Drive yesterday. It works perfectly on my Windows PC. At first it didn’t show up at all on my iPad, so I formatted it and it worked! But then I plugged it into my Windows PC again, which also went well. But ever since then I could never make it work on my iPad again! It no longer shows up on it at all! The drive is definitely working, the little light turns on when I plug it. Also it has definitely worked on my iPad so it must be compatible... The only thing that might be what’s causing the issue here according to your video is maybe power? I don’t have an adapter to help me power the iPad while the drive is plugged in. But then why did it work the first time? And I’ve also seen other people get a little pop up of a message when they plug their device that tells them they need power. I never got that message. I really hope that’s what’s causing the issue as in my country these adapters are like 90$ which is the same amount I paid for the drive itself... I’ll buy one, I guess I have to, but if it doesn’t work that way either I’m screwed!
Immediate update for anyone who might have a similar issue: I just bought the iStyle iPad Pro Adapter, used it to connect both the Drive and the charger to my iPad, and everything is working freakin’ flawlessly!!! Jeeeeez this guy saved my life (THANK YOU IF YOU’RE READING THIS). Turns our all I needed was power! The adapter is awesome on its own too, it has an entrance for a micro SD card which I didn’t even know was available for an iPad, as well as a regular SD card! It has a USB A port, a USB C port, even a port for headphones and an HDMI port! I didn’t even know I needed any of this, but I am SO glad I have it! Good luck anyone who may be experiencing a similar issue!
People repeat the same few hints, but it isn’t working. Windows, Linux, no problem. iPadOS, problem. It worked on my previous iPad pro, same drive, no changes. That iPad bricked trying to upgrade from 15.7.x to 16. But it worked with this NVME drive in a USB-C enclosure. I’d seriously love a different, working system: put lipstick on a pig and it’s still a pig.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Hi, thanks: first thing I tried was borrowing a working, powered USB hub. FAIL! That was a disappointment, especially as my still working drive is usable everywhere except my new iPad pro! I formatted it exfat previously just so it would, and did, work on my previous iPad Pro-the one that bricked during upgrade. So I’m not sure if it’s iPadOS >= 16 or iPad pro > 12.9” v.2 where the company in its marketing wisdom de-enabled the use. Or maybe the iPad pro is broken that way? It did work, it should continue to work, it does not. Pigs && lipstick…. 🐷🐖🐽
Hiya, i have a SanDisk Ultra Flair 150MB/s USB 3.0 Flash Drive - 128G and have currently used it on a laptop on windows 10 to download photos and videos, would this USB still be compatible with the IOS on my iPhone to be able to transfers photos to and from the iPhone on to the same USB using the Apple adapter used in the video?
Its less than ideal, but I tend to use cloud and wireless transfers more often these days though. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FVWVlGtK4rY.html
I found the root of my problem, The apadter worked when I used a usb flashdrive, the problem is my HArdrive itself. I tried formatting to Exfat but still it doesnt show up on my ios device
Still won’t connect! I have a real apple adapter...it was just working a week ago! Idk what happened please help I am trying to connect my homder voice recorder to it.
I bought myself a "Y-Disk" flashdrive with a USB on one end and lightening connector on the other. When I first got it. it worked a treat but now for some reason it wont connect or let me reformat it. The trouble started when It suddenly became "write protected" which I didn't activate myself, then it just stopped connecting and saying it needs formatting. Any ideas? I've tried to reformat it on win7 & windows vista but maybe it will only work on win10? which I don't have. I suspect not... it's probably just F###ed but before I smash to bits with a hammer I thought I'd see if anyone has a fix for this? Cheers.
Yeah interesting! Not sure sorry as I haven’t used one of these. Unfortunately any of these third party devices often don’t survive long, especially when there are iOS updates.
Correct! It provides enough power for most drives as I mentioned in the video. And you don’t need a proprietary Apple adapter as you can just use any USB-C adapter.
Hi.. I have a 2015 WD Element (1TB) but unable to use it with iPad Pro 2020. It is not detecting despite of many efforts. Kindly suggest what to do ...
Hi. I have my Kingston 32GB thumb drive (complemented with Samsung USB to Type C converter) inserted to my iPad Air 4 but it doesn't work (although the "unlock iPad to use the accessory popped out in the notification) File system has been formatted to exFAT, everything checked, too bad it's still not working. It's strange that other video tutorial with the same device and same adapter works, but mine doesn't. Do you have any idea about this?
Do you think you can use an Ethernet to USB adaptor WITH the USB hub to get wired internet for your IPad, while using the HDD as shown in your vid? Ethernet to Lightening adaptors are super expensive so this would be great if it works.
A little of both. Mostly it’s my experience. I don’t use genuine Apple stuff for everything, but for USB adapters I simply haven’t found anything that works as reliably as the genuine Apple Lightning to USB 3 adapter
How many videos do you want to make that pretend to address the problem. I have a genuine apple powered dongle which no longer works after an IOS update. I have to watch a dozen videos whose solution is to use an official apple powered dongle…..it took a genius to show me that it works without doing anything if you dont have a problem in the first place. Thanks for zero.
