You are conflating two separate things. Poles are not against homosexuals in general, but against an artificial ideology influencing a culture that works and that people like. The other thing is that homosexuality is a sin - according to Catholic people, we are all sinners and this does not mean that they are bad. It's just a sin.

@@lerubenfeld LGBTQIA+ IS an artificial construct. Ironically, this is the biggest enemy of homosexuals in Poland. Things would be different if this neomarxist lobby wasn't present. Relativism all around, changing flags from time to time due to the discovery of some 'new spectra', sick parades, it's just ridiculous. I don't care if someone's gay, queer, transgender - that's not for me to judge in any way and the only thing I can do is to accept them. Of course, there are homophobes in Poland - I won't deny but the problem in all of this is to understand common Polish way of thinking. I am not sure if you noticed but the Polish are people who respect their own privacies - kind of similar to Japanese people. Edit: I also have friends who are gay and they would be lovely parents, and I wish that for them in the future... but marking an LGBTQIA+ label on them, would put them in a lost position from the very beginning. LGBTQIA+ lobbies are associated with the extreme left and neomarxist, they are in the same group as all people who now try to destroy cultural heritages and the whole popculture or those hypocrites who block the roads to stop the utilisation of oil but they do it in the wrong countries.

@@lerubenfeld Look for Iwaszkiewicz: he was a Tsar of polish literature, born in Ukraine in landlords family. He successfully negotiated with the communists. He was part of establishment, gay, venerated by the establishment, had a state funeral with all the honors. Of course, he was a Roman Catholic. There were couple of gays in TV and artistic circles in communist times as well. This is freedom and tolerance Polish way. Where the idea came from that gays should gather together, march, celebrate pride and talk BS stuff? This is some stupid idea, we in Poland do not appreciate. We call it gender ideology and we see connection between those ideas and Marxism. Gender ideology defines discriminated groups based on sexual orientation, which is against what we believe. In Poland gays could be conservative members of society and respected. We don’t need gay movement in our society.

And this is about a country where some of the biggest heroes were openly gay and nobody ever made a problem (Jozef Bem for instance). We never had any laws whatsoever banning or penalising homosexuals (unlike in the UK, Belgium or Germany, to name a few). Poles traditionally are an individualist and freedom loving people, bordering on pure anarchy sometimes, but with a “don’t mess with me and I won’t mess with you” type attitude. Pozdrawiam i szanuję wszystkich, którzy mają szacunek, miłość i zrozumienie do drugiego człowieka 🤗

@@PiotrJaser Kolego, pomijasz kilka kwesti.

We are not homophobic! We just refuse to sorund them with adoration. We also don't bother if someone is homosexual or not, but is he a decent man! Nobody in polish history was prosecuted for beeing gay! There were some prominent people, openly gay in Poland between I and II World War(like Karol Szymanowski). So, we are not homophobic, but we don't like when these, not so normal sexual behavior, is forced on us, and we are forced to adore them for what they like to do with their genitals. That's everybody's privat matter. BTW - the "free form LGBT" town banner was prepared by LGBT activist to ridicule Poland. Polish MP known only for his homosexual orientation (no other qualities) told in the EU parliament, that he was denided to enter certain places because he was gay. When asked by other Polish EU MP to name one, he couldn't name one to verify his claims. On the opposite - in Germany the last person convicted for being gay, left the prison in 90' if I remember correctly. Or UK - prosecuted their homosexuals for centuries, even those great ones like Alan Touring.

Even though I am an advocate of same-sex marriage or the adoption of children by homosexual couples, many of the demands presented by the LGBT community in Poland are unacceptable to me. The main example may be limiting freedom of speech. We already have a stupid provision in Poland about defending religious feelings. Protection against "hate speech" or "protection of feelings" is not an option in any case. Another example of an area where I completely disagree with the LGBT community is education and medicine. The LGBT community, just like some conservative or nationalist communities, tries to impose its top-down program of teaching and raising children. I am a supporter of the greatest possible flexibility and decentralization of education. Anyone who tries to impose one correct way of interpreting the world is a threat to me (sometimes even existential). When it comes to medicine, I am simply against promoting hormone therapy as safe and proven. According to the current state of knowledge, these therapies are not safe and proven. Despite this, LGBT communities promote them as something necessary because children commit suicide. This is simple emotional blackmail on doctors who currently have nothing else to approve (especially in the USA, I suspect in Canada too). In addition, of course, there is the phenomenon of cancel culture, which generally occurs in highly ideological environments. There is even a joke in Poland that "the left/right gets stronger through division." It is, of course, about an internal fight for the purity of views. I could write something else about post-modernist philosophy, which I don't agree with, but I don't think there's a need. The general point is that even if such demands as marriage or adoption are perfectly fine, they are mixed with a lot of other demands. If you do not agree with limiting freedom of speech or raising children according to imposed patterns, you become homophobes, fascists, nazis, etc. Maybe it would be easier for the entire LGBT community to fight for marriage or adoption, for example, if they did not divide the world into the good ones (those who are with them). ) and the bad ones who disagree with them on anything.

The only requirement was basically 'leave us alone', i.e. be a minority in your private getto and do whatever you want there. AFAIK there never was stringent hunt for homosexuals in PL; no case of an Oscar Wilde or an Alan Turing persecution by the state. Just like there never was a Dreyfus affair in free Poland. This all changed with pride parades and the West (who historically persecuted Jews, gays, blacks etc.) starting to tell us we're not modern/civilized/democratic unless we get ecstatic about minorities living contrary to the way majority lives. And in Poland, we payed with blood for many, many generations to ensure the majority can be free to live the way their ancestors did. Thank God this issue evolves. The Pope basically closed it. I think the title question has it backwards. Gay marriage was legalized in Canada in 2005 (according to Google at least), and it was apparently one of the 1st countries worldwide to do it. Pretty much E V E R. So a more pertinent question might be why is the modern west so open to the idea. That's the anomaly in the face of the rest of the world AND history.

You confuse "phobic" with the lact of active promotion. Since Poles do not openly and formally promote LGBTQ, then they must hate them. It is a nonse, just take a deep breath and think about it. Promotion of LGBT in the West is partially a result of their not that distant hatered and persecution. Now "Westerners" try to repent for their past and compensate this by supporting LGBT. It is also widely believed that many people deep down still hate them and they must ba actively fought against and reedcuated. Poland does not have a history of persecution of this community, people do not feel like they owe anythign to them and there is no former hatedred to fight with. Yet, looking from Western perspective (like yours), not seeing this active support for LGBT is interpreded by the lenses of your culture. Poles are still stuck in the past, and the in the past everbody hated LGBT, hence they must hate them now. Oh well! Poland was always presented in the West as a backward country. In the past it was used to justify military, imperial expansion and conquest, now it is only about culture. From out stand point it is much better. We will get through this.

As a Polish person, the comments here make me weep. Never met this many active homophobes in my day to day life though, so I guess they just appear loud online. But they do touch on one very real thing: your way of thinking about the history of homophobia is totally Western, the idea that people are against it because they think it's sinful or something. Our catholicism is more symbolic, you know, it's not that deep. The only governments that actually prosecuted gays around these lands were the Germans and then the communists. In reality, the average homophobe here think about everything queer as a sort of fetish - most people have some, I had a cousin who liked feet, whatever, just don't talk about it in front of kids-kinda-thing. My dad, an older conservative guy, was quite excited to meet a drag queen irl, but I know he would lose his mind if she performed for children. Thankfully, normalization of gay couples in certain media made this approach go away in a large group of population, and especially the youth, so I remain hopeful. It's similar with sexism. Women who stay in the kitchen, cannot own bank accounts, only dream of marriage - that is a Western thing. Here it was just impossible, too many constant wars and occupations where men disappeared (died, imprisoned, deported to Syberia etc.) Or they came back from wars, but with no limbs and alcoholic. Average woman worked hard everyday. Even those who could afford not to work would usually do things. In the XIX century, women from bigger cities owned businesses, opened schools, museums, wrote bestselling books, created renowned art, made scientific discoveries, engaged in fights against the occupiers... And yet when Westerners talk about our gender situation, they apply their own, very different history of "gender roles in society" and then they don't understand what's going on. We need wise anthropologists, sociologists etc. to analyze the cultural systems of oppression in a way that makes sense specifically for Poland, as I'm afraid without it, we won't find solutions.

Huh. I have gay friends in here. Found out about this by accident, by a phrase "with my man/woman" in a context. I didn't care and I don't care, it's their business. We joke about it quite often (oh, the brutal gay humour, I love it) though, we meet together as a pack if friends, nobody has problems with kissing etc. Never seen them mistreated in public. Historically - yeah, it was a "sin" but nobody cared. No anti-gay laws in history! Poland just didn't give a F. because we had more important stuff to do, like wars, economy and independence. Gay or not, straight or not - you must do something useful, otherwise you are a problem. When I asked my friends about being mistreated - they usually say that it was hard in the past and now it's ok. Family reaction? Mostly grieving over... Not having biological grandchildren, the clan going further. But they grew to accept it, through a grieving process. Yes, it's harder in villages still, because of Catholic beliefs. They told me often "gay bit not queer" and that LGBT messed it up for them here. Previously they were "slowly becoming a part of society" (Biedroń, for example), almost every small city had its "famous flamboyant gay". LGBT burst in, all guns blazing, demanding but not becoming, doing lots of fuzz but none of the work. They had to explain to people that they are "normal gays" and were accepted. Those are their words and their stories. But I also remember getting the crap beaten out of me by skinheads, because I a metalhead with long hair. Like one of my gay friends said "I was gay, you were a metalhead, we both got our share of hatred in the 90s". Yes, because it was such era and you had to be there to understand it now. In Poland there are quite a lot if lesbian, gay and bi people who do not identify with LGBT because they do not address being gay or explain it in the proper way. And that is not an aberration. They have the right for their opinion and who or how they should be represented.

You hit the nail on the head with this comment. A good many gay men and lesbians say genderqueer activists, many of them heterosexual k-in-k-sters, who have hijacked the movement and now call the tune are homophobic, intolerant, misogynist, arrogant and deeply regressive. It's a good job we live in an era of the Internet and instant communication where "comparing notes" is so easy. Sadly, so many pple are at a loss to know exactly what's going on. E.g., the great blokes of the Gay Men's Network say teachers should read more poetry to children instead of robbing children of the innocence of childhood during the "drag queen story hour" sessions run by self-appointed LGBTQIA 'educators'.

I would like to remind you that every society/nation has its own rules because of history. Poland has roots in Catholicism and overall Christianity and being a part of LGBTQ is marked as a sin (yea it literally written in Bible about homosexuals and not literally but in some ways about trans) but that doesnt mean humans aren’t equal… We need to love each other. Negative opinion about homosexuals etc is popular in smaller towns and villages. Usually the people from big cities are more into it, they want to be like the west. They discuss more about things like this and not as much as they should about helping people what makes people angry and makes left-wing parties look stupid in the eyes of Poles. However, we as a nation are somewhere in the middle and I like that. You have past connected to Canada and USA where everything has different rules. Its a whole different world. Why is it necessary to change others to your way? Homophobic or not, gay or not we all should be able live happily, but its necessary to remember we are not from one culture. We all are people but from different backgrounds, so please do not approve cancel culture and remarking ones as perverts and idiots.

In the Bible it's also written that a woman having her period or a man having a discharge at night in bed is a sin and that in such a case they should go to the desert and live in isolation for some time. The bible is not the word of God but ancient Jewish community law, written by ignorants. Jesus said if you just desire a woman that's already a sin. He meant that you cannot escape sin. We are not less sinful than homosexuals, just because we have heterosexual desire.

If you claim otherwise, give an example of a sentence for homosexuality or the law that mentions criminality in an earlier period, and the fact that the law on no criminal record was introduced in 1932 does not mean that it was different earlier.
