Fun fact: This is actually our first movie black superhero. Not black panther…it was Meteor man!! We need to give Robert Townsend his flowers for creating this.
Fun fact: Meteor Man actually got a 6-issue series produced by Marvel Comics that was released around the same time. So technically, this was a Black Marvel character movie that predates both Blade and Black Panther.
Robert Townsend is one of the main reasons why I work in film. He's severely underrated, not appreciated enough in Hollywood. Thanks for giving him his flowers 💐
What's cool is Meteor Man is technically a Marvel character too. There was a short comic run after the movie that takes place after the events of the movie. He even met Spider-Man.
I saw this movie in theaters when it came out & i also rented the DVD from Netflix before it became a streaming service. Robert Townsend said he received criticism for this movie because people asked him why did he choose to do a silly movie after The Five Heartbeats. He said he wanted to show his versatility. Here comes the fun fact: Roy Fegan’s son Roshon Fegan is an actor as well. He was on the Disney show Shake It Up, Greenleaf & The Bobby Debarge story. Next week’s review is Woo. 0:05
Roshun looks nothing like his dad. I would have never known. As talented as Robert is and all the classics he's created, he's still stayed under the radar compared to the Wayans and other directors.
@@forthenostalgia- I was just saying to my dad the other day that I wish that Robert Townsend had received more support. He put out some really good films that had great messages behind them. Have you ever seen Hollywood Shuffle? It’s another movie that uses a little bit of comedy but he addresses some really good themes. It’s one of my favorite movies that he made.
James Gunn says one of the ways that his movies stay under budget and don't have reshoots is because he always works with some people who he's worked with before. He knows they'll get the job done on time. So directors of low budget movies probably do the same.
The scene where Jeff turns that empty lot into a giant vegetable garden brought tears to my eyes even as a kid because with all the powers that so many other superheroes have, none of them were feeding people. Damnit man, my eyes watered up typing this. I can still hear the music in the background. Also, him being hit by the meteor scared me as an 8 year old.
@Omni20One especially with the background radio talking about how much help he was doing for the community. And when the garden was ripe the Bloods and Crips who he got to call a truce, help pick and distribute the items.
It was cool to see his range of powers. But now looking at it I think that garden took ALOT out of him. He started having issues shortly afterward with it.
This was an underrated gem growing up. As a kid and a black kid at that, this really made me think I could be a superhero and that other black people in my community were too. I love this film. Need to find that "creative" way to find it since they don't want to stream it on platforms like it should be.
I remember seeing this movie with my mom, my dad and my brother back in 93 beautiful memories and a slew full of legendary characters. May they all rest in peace for those who are now in heaven
Regardless of them not using the right name, and you having to double check before correcting them, this theory is mind-blowing. Bullying pushed to villianism. Wow.
I feel that Robert Townsend in general is criminally underrated…he definitely helped pave the way for future black filmmakers. I always thought he was funny…
Meteor Man:underrated movie that definitely deserves a sequel……gotta get the dvd comic and soundtrack……RIP James Earl Jones Tiny Lister and Robert Guillame…….
I think what stuck out to me the most in this movie watching as an adult was the fact that he casted actual kids to be in the gang,,, it was extreme but kinda poetic.
@@dupe8187 I finally bought it on “Mercari;” I saw a couple on eBay, but, the seller I originally purchased from was scamming people buy not sending the dvd after it claimed to be “shipped.”
This movie and The Five Heartbeats are why I had a crush on Robert Townsend when I was a kid. Me and my brother would quote it all the time. It's crazy to see all the actors my young mind recognized as the "normal" faces in Black cinema without knowing who the star themselves was.
Wow, I never knew about this movie. I grew up watching the DCOM movie Up, Up and Away, about a kid born into a superhero family who doesn’t have any powers. Meteor Man played his dad!
This movie is my favorite, like WOW!! I’m so glad someone else loves it, too! Even Michael Jackson has a song on the soundtrack. Soo many legends in one film.
I loved this movie growing up! Robert Townsend was a super hero for real! From Metero Man and up up and away! And the soundtrack is fire! I love the song “It’s for you” by Shanice!
Fun fact, although Robert Townsends character was supposed to be from DC, most of the movie was filmed in Baltimore's Reservoir Hill neighborhood, so many black acting legends in one place, RIP James Earl Jones.
I loved this movie when I first saw it as a kid. It scared me a bit but I loved it. I loved how the outcast wound up saving everyone and that the community stood up for him and embraced him at the end.
I'm SO happy you did this review! This and Ghostbusters 1 & 2 were the only films me, my sister and nephew would watch over and over, know all the words and act it out. I own them all and still watch them to this day, play them for my children even used them as themes for their birthday parties. Love it! ❤️
Truly, a classic movie I loved it remember watching it when I was a kid. You have a lot of heavy Hollywood actors in there which is also the reason why it made it a class a movie and yes, they should play that over and over on HBO or Showtime, but I have not seen that movie in years. Maybe because of Cosby, I don’t know.
I LOVE this film,a true classic indeed,I have this movie on dvd, which i bought from a local pawn shop for $ 1.00.Don't dare-SLEEP-on the pawn shops. LOL. They most definitely don't make black films like this any more, but,I wish they would. Good movie review on a classic film, keep'em coming-PLEASE. Hope you do a review of-FIRST-SUNDAY-bought an extra copy from a local thrift store for $ 1.00.
Im from India, I watched this movie as a kid on tv. My take on why this movie is hardly talked about is bcos of the "exposure" factor....specifically with the lead Robert Townsend(no disrespect to Mr.Townseend intended, he deserves his flowers) .He was just not someone that was recognised globally. I use the word exposure pertaining to 'word of mouth' not official marketing done by the studio or movie distributers. Even as a kid, even though I appreciated this movie as a Indian, I wasn't blown away by it bcos I had never seen Robert Townsend in anything that I could remember & I knew who James Earl jones was when I watched it then & even recognised many other actors faces in the movie even though I didn't know their names back then but not Robert....& I think this had a factor with it's unpopularity.A weird example I can give you is that I remember the black superhero movie "Blankman" more than I remember this movie & I believe it's bcos of the casting cos even though the movie did not have Global "black superstar actors" it still had "black star actors' whose "faces" were recognised globally & kept getting recognised further with their future body of work which kept them or made them more relevant on the global entertainment sphere. Love from India, I enjoyed the video...bought back good memories of watching movies on cable tv as a kid. Take care
Robert Townsend really is a good brother. he helped out brother David Ruffin of the 5 heartbeats when he was at his worst, thank you 4 this video I loved watching this growing up
I believe you would enjoy reviewing this movie: UNINVITED GUEST, staring Mari Morrow, Mekhi Phifer, Mel Jackson, Malinda Williams & Kim Fields. All I'm gonna say is "it's a twist within a twist within a twist".
One of the things I really remembered about this movie is that it’s so CROWDED. Every scene has like thousands of people in it and it just makes many of the scenes feel overwhelming for me LOL. So many people and celebrity cameos that don’t have any lines. It’s frustrating and triggering and makes me hella anxious hahaha 😂
I swear I hate the fact that Meteor Man is not streaming anywhere but I’m also glad I have the VHS and DVD And lol an actress everyone loves to hate was too easy I know what’s coming next…
Yo! I totally forgot about this movie. Thanks for sharing. They used to show it all the time, then it vanished. Looking back at the anti-drug, andri-crime messaging, we can imagine why - smh. So many gems in this movie. Hearing the voice of Vader ask "you down with O.P.P.?" is a moment 😂
