Unfortunately mate. Yes you do have to hand your license to the police when you’re in a car driving or “travelling “ 🤦♀️. You actually agree to that when you get your license.
Blake Dean I’m pretty sure it’s printed on the back of the license as well. It’s been the law for so long. I think people may be confused with laws of Australia and America and how they differ. In America you don’t have to identify yourself. In Australia you do. You agreed when you signed for your license. This is why you should read everything before you sign.
And in Australia having a license is a privilege not a right. And with that privilege comes responsibility. In this situation, your responsibility was to identify yourself with your license. Just a little FYI. I am in no way ok with police abusing powers and not being as decent and respectful as they want the person they are speaking with to be. And I do respect the officers that do their job. And do it well. Within all situations they are trained to do.

They set him up the owner was told the vehicle was ready to be recovered from the impound. They set up this under cover on the street near the vehicles registered premises. They just wanted to i.d him.

Court date keeps gettin delayed. The cop is a liar his statement is way different to the video. Can't wait to embarrass him in court. All for a $110 fine
Just remember when the cops decide on your court date, cancel out at the last minute, and do this 2 or 3 times. Invent a couple of emergencies , tell the court bailiff .......
You just had to ask him under what 'law' he was detaining you. Once it was established there was no law, it is an unlawful detention. Maybe even got him to read the paper you served about police powers.

It seems to be the main job of the police these days to make peopled lives more difficult. A bit of push back is healthy. Police are always out to create trouble where none exists. If they want respect they can earn it now.

Should have asked him to prove that he is a Victorian Police Officer and not someone who works for a overseas company. Impersonation of a Victorian Police Officer is a minimum 2 year jail sentence.

Thats how a lot of disputes are sorted out in the country...a couple of drinks down the pub with mates, the way it should be. And a game of pool to settle any loose ends.
Police take the mostly easiest Jobs, they dont want to go risk there lives for serious offenders and attacks, look at all the illegal motorbike riders on the road and late at night, they have dirt bike police, do they ever go get them? never they let them run a muck, primarily due not being able to get money from them and there not worth the chase as you cant get blood from a stone, they would rather book you for 5 ks over the speed limit, a mobile phone, or no seat belt, they have no interest in people who dont have any money on them, hence saying that, Police are still needed in our community if we need them.
He did well as I always thought you had to present your license on demand if driving at least in NSW. That's one reason why I like being a passenger or a pedestrian: in which case I demand that they arrest me before I will ever reveal my identity! :-)
the thing that gets me about police is they pull people over and stop on freeways, then the speed drops to from 100 to 40 which is a hazard, after what happened with those police that got hit they should learn from it and just get off at the next exit

Fairs, fair. A broken window! The alarm on the licence plate showed the driver was suspended. The Office wasn't to know if the drive was the owner or had just stolen the vehicle. How would you feel if your vehicle was stolen and your watching these videos and discover the sh1t who stole your car, was stopped by the Police and let go. You would be dirty from here to Sunday. Respect goes two ways. Everyone is under extreme stress with lockdowns. Maybe if we all complied when approached by the Police, they wouldn't be in everyone's face as much.
basically the car could be stolen, broken window etc , was it reported stolen > no. i do understand the cops concern and also if it was stolen and they ignored it , . getting weird and confusing , im all for rights too, and suspicious policing, we have seen the bad apples upsetting the cart and being ass oles .
There was no reason to suspect it could be stolen. It just got picked up from impound by the unlicensed owner hence why they pulled it over. They were waiting across the road.

Never talk to the police don't even acknowledge they exist know your rights remain silent only talk to a lawyer or solicitor if you are arrested there's nothing you can do but remain silent at all times i know its hard not to talk but be strong remain silent good luck out there.
if they arrest the only person you speak to is the custody searg. to confirm your name any police officer who arrests you does not need your name then and there and only to confirm your medical status if you need prescribed stuff otherwise they stich you up for all sorts of other charges
They have some how managed to blur photos when someone records the vicpol lanyard I’ve seen it multiple times not in person but on film so it has to argue that they have some sort of blur plastic that stops the id from being recorded
so you have to prove your innocence even though a crime was never claimed to have been committed other than the owner of this vehicle has no licence? It was the cops duty to investigate further before confronting you with alligations.
Well you do have to provide as a minimum your name and address under the road safety act, you could have just provided that. I think from memory its 7 days to provide your license to a police station after that?

You are driving a vehicle on a road, they can ask for your license to identify a driver. Don't say "'I'm travelling", you know it's clearly a way to be a smartass.

I would think after approaching the vehicle and visually seeing that the person behind the wheel does not match the description of the driver with the suspended licence, anything after that seems to me as harassment and fishing. from what the guy was saying it came across as they knew they were going to pull the vehicle over before even getting into it hence why the owner didn't. this all seems sus just from the officers behaviour and what his saying. The officer clearly new why the window was broken, out of all the reasons he narrows it down refusal to id made it sound like it was justified to break the window. he later says they are up and down this road all day, i'm going to safely assume they are pulling vehicles over, that being said all 3 officer failed to protect the public and became super spreaders by neglecting to wear fresh gloves let alone any at all while handling this guys Id. makes you wonder how mystery ccpviruse cases are popping up ay.

The police pulled you over for a valid reason, and you want your 15 minutes. I have read through the comments and am disheartened of the number of comments that were in support of you. You were the one who kicked up a dickens when all you had to do was hand over your license, he would have confirmed that you are not the registered owner and you would have been on your way. Stuff like this is rife in America but to see it happening in Australia makes me ashamed.
