Jake McCoy that's why you should never take your car to a shop if you want it to still be running, and save thousands of dolors. I'm sure he didn't strip it. Probably you, or some other nut job before him tightened the bolt too tight. That bolt should only be snug, never tighten it too much. Different shops use the cheapest oil and oil filter to rob you and make you come back sooner. If you don't know how to change oil, which every person with a car should know these basics at the beginning. Always bring your own oil filter and watch them put it on to make sure they do and oil as well. Some scam shops don't even change the oil or filter so take a marker and make a mark on the filter before you take it to get it changed and see if they actually do. Hope this little trick helps out

you want the coldest air possible, it is more dense so in turn it combusts better. the further away from the warm engine the air is sucked in the colder it is. Because the engine bay warms up as you drive your performance would decrease if you sucked in warm air from the engine bay. that's why people install cold air intakes on their vehicles. and it's not manufacturers looking to get more money out of you, they're trying to maximize the performance of your car. just don't drive through water, you're in a car not a boat.
@flackyoue7483
@flackyoue7483 7 лет назад
catch 22, cold air and mileage + horsepower + higher risk or hot air and safer water dispersal at the cost of performance
@jenniferanne4143
@jenniferanne4143 7 лет назад
The air is cooler down there than on top of the engine. Engines run better sucking colder air.

Thank you! I've been searching RU-vid for the better part of 30 minutes trying to find a concise video explaining the dangers of getting water in your air intake and how it can damage an engine. A lot of explanations are people talking about opinions and selling merchandise not talking about the question. Thank you very much for this quick and simple explanation.
@HotNoob

every car ive had, had the air intake on the top just under the hood. What a huge fucking moronic design flaw! i can't believe that any car manufacturer would make such a dumb mistake as to put the intake so low to the ground. just.. WTF
@CazRaX
@CazRaX 8 лет назад
+HotNoob It's a slight performance thing, let's the engine take in cold air from closer to the ground and also makes it easier to get air because of the drag and amount of air moving at that level. Makes sense on the Celica which is a sports car but not on the 300, there it was a stupid decision.
@TrollingSince1991
@TrollingSince1991 8 лет назад
Almost every car has that design, it's just hard to tell because new cars have no space in the engine compartment
@tomhill3907
@tomhill3907 8 лет назад
my old Fiesta had the air intake right behind the headlight so this wouldnt happen, and my current lexus has it tucked at the top of the engine bay about a foot behind the grill. Same case with my corsa but never before have I seen such an idiotic design flaw.. what the hell are they thinking?

@hyzercreek
@hyzercreek 8 лет назад
+Bobby Sauer There are a lot of stupid designs in cars. Take the side-post battery terminal. DUMB!! How dumb to screw a steel bolt into a lead post? Since when is lead a metal that can take a tap and die? Lead is softer than butter for god's sake, those things always strip.
@halaheleu7013
@halaheleu7013 7 лет назад
dont know why you want a air intake so low near a wheel to suck up dust,dirt,gravel,sand and water thought you would only want air for the engine.

There is a filter there for a reason...
@roborovsky6950
@roborovsky6950 7 лет назад
He's annoying and usually speak shit. The resonator box is located there. There is a duct going from the air filter box to the resonator box in the fender ,and from the resonator there is another duct coming up right under the bonnet ,usually near an opening near the headlight. So it works like this : Fresh air gets sucked in the duct , goes to the resonator box , then to the air filter box and then to the intake.

To add on to the other commentators, it's more efficient for the engine due to colder air being more dense. Denser air means more oxygen. More oxygen with fuel in a stroke = more power Depending on the tune of the vehicle and type and age, it varies, but there are differences between summer driving (less dense, hotter air, less oxygen per stroke) and winter driving (my personal favorite - more dense, cold air, more oxygen per stroke). Enjoying your channel, Mr. Kilmer!

So why do some manufacturers design it so low into the engine, Is it not possible to position it in a higher and dryer area?
@undefinablereasoning
@undefinablereasoning 8 лет назад
Probably just an easy way to guarantee cooler air
@Exolesco
@Exolesco 7 лет назад
+undefinablereasoning Pretty much that. If the intake is positioned any higher or closer to the center of the engine then it'll just be sucking in hot air from the engine. This will cause a loss of power and bad mpg.

My intake is positioned so that it sucks air through the crack in the bonnet. Never seen a car in Norway with an intake that low... I dont think it would last many winters here with that.

Hey Scotty, love your videos! I recently bought a car that runs and drives just fine. I recently noticed that water (when its raining) and snow and salt (when its snowing) enter the front through the grill and get into the engine bay. Its not much, but after cleaning the engine bay, I noticed it again a couple of weeks later. What could be causing this? Could the grill be missing a part that normally stops this from happening? Thanks!

Why in the world do they put the intake so low?!
@scottykilmer

race car design, lower air is colder, more efficient for power or for gas mileage. Plus, engineers are often nerds who like messing with such stuff though they have no common sense in the end.

its to suck in colder air which enhances combustion thus increasing a little bit in horsepower. A good way to prevent hydrolocking or blowing your engine is to install a good hydro shield which is about 20 bucks or so, and to install a AEM air bypass valve (40-50$) which eliminates almost all possibility of this happening William Ross Scotty Kilmer

The air filter in the 300C, which uses the 5.7 hemi, is near the top of the engine. I think the person was lying about how deep the water was. Yes it gets its air from the fender well but there are also air paths in front of the headlights and radiator baffle.

If I were a auto manufacture, I would have almost all models have the intake above the radiator or on the side of the radiator to give it the capability to go through floods

I can't think of any good reason for a car to have its air intake so low to the ground. Seems like a huge flaw that could be easily fixed by just having the intake ... anywhere else like behind the grill or something. Why is it designed that way?
@private2809
@private2809 5 лет назад
Colder air near the ground compared to within the engine bay (colder air is better for performance), also more aerodynamic and less expensive (I presume on the expense) than installing a snorkel for every car manufactured, many of which will never experience flood waters.

I bet he just ran it without the spark plugs. That way, the water has somewhere to go without bending the con rods or otherwise being a dick, because it just gets pushed out the holes where the spark plugs were. Almost like a bunch of large syringes.

@eemarko

That's the thing one would do if he wants engine performance to decrease.Hot air is much less oxygen dense than cold air. They have intercoolers with turbo for a reason.I'd just remove intake ducting before air filter, if going offroading once in a while

I learned this lesson the hard way... Drove my '02 Elantra into a shallow puddle when suddenly a pulse of water came down from the hill beside me. Although a mechanic managed to somehow make the engine run again, it started to to consume engine oil like crazy. Turned out it bent a conrod. It's a miracle that it could still run. In the end had to fully overhaul the engine and rebore because the bent rod scratched the cylinder surface.

We once drove our 2008 Corolla through water that was nearly door-handle deep, just for 10 seconds each way (it was a river). Nothing ever happened to the engine, and we drove it for 440,000 miles before selling it to a college student, who still drives it. Not taking my car in deep water anytime soon, but I wonder: do some brands protect their cars better than others? I would contend that Toyota does!
