The next Michael Jordan. Many have been tagged up next to carry this title and today’s feature was once in those exact shoes. In the mid to late 90s it seems if you were a shooting guard 6’5 to 6’7, everyone compared and sometimes even expected you to be that and I get it. This was the golden era of basketball competition and Michael Jordan was running away with not only being the best player by far on the court, but who didn’t want a copy of the great marketing tool off the floor that MJ was during his playing days. Stackhouse and others like him were direct successors of the Jordan era, but none of them actually turned out to have careers or impacts quite like many expected. When Jerry Stackhouse was set to enter the NBA in 1995, franchise changer was his expectation. He finished with career averages of 17 points 3 rebounds and 3 assist. If you’ve watch Stackhouse in college and even the years when he was a featured player, you’d know that he could’ve done a lot more in the league and I’m sure he’d agree. As a piston fan I have a lot of love for Stackhouse and Grant Hill. Mainly because they were integral trade pieces for Rip Hamilton and Ben Wallace respectively. As a piston he was tough to root for because he could have 43 one game 8 the next 31 the game after and 5 the game after that. Rip gave you a consistent 15 to 21 every night.

Stack had one dominant season with the Pistons, led the league in points and was 2nd in PPG behind AI. Kind of hard to believe the Sixers sucked so bad with both of them.

Stackhouse was such a small forward that teams would constantly feature him as a shooting guard which fed into his ego and him taking alot of wild shots during the who's the next Mike era. His blackhole reputation smothered alot of other up and coming shooting guards on teams he was on and killed team chemistries throughout his career.But he had a halfway descent career overall

I'm a Heels fan so I saw Stack from early on. His biggest issue, in my opinion, is that he always seemed to think he was better than he actually was. He had a good career but he was never gonna be able to carry a team.

We helped the Pistons through some terrible seasons and helped get them to 50 wins but it was obvious he wasn't gonna help them do better than that. When Joe Dumars traded him to the Wizards for Rip Hamilton, my friends and I were happy. It was a typical Jordan move, trade a young scorer on a rookie deal for Stackhouse because Stack went to UNC.

Jerry Stackhouse was a Dope player Very athletic could finish at the rim with the best of them. but his lack of a consistent outside shot thus he shot a low percentage for his career hindered him along with his lack of play making for others. another stunt on his growth was he would fight some of his teammates if he was not fed the ball or if they spoke up about how he played. salute to Stackhouse he is a very good college basketball coach I look forward to him coaching in the NBA one day. dope content bro.

I remember the 2002 playoffs when he went up against the Celtics and I think the score was 69-66. Very low scoring game and Stackhouse almost hit a prayer off the bank but it was ruled after the buzzer and of course he got traded for Rip.

Facts .also Stackhouse being the 2nd leader in the league in scoring avg29+ ppg2000/2001 season was more of a curse then a gift as his playmaking for his teammates never evolved while his athleticism gradually started to regress he further remained a perimeter blackhole and journeyman .

Now as a long time Dallas Mavericks fan I will say that Stackhouse provided a toughness on a somewhat "soft" team and leadership when needed most, as Dirk was not a vocal leader (he led by his actions). At that point I think he was humbled and was not a big ball hog and knew his role as the sixth man on the team and that served him well. He was a big part of why the Dallas Mavericks ended up in the 2006 finals, but with all the scandals from the refs, they folded and crashed and didn't finish the job. I hate that he could not have won it with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011. He was a fan favorite and that would have been an amazing way to end his career!

Interesting being from Philly, since in those early days AI, not Stack, was the one who had the rep of being selfish. I know a few people who swear that AI being a ball hog was what ran Stack out of the city.

Stackhouse got to the playoffs 3 out 4 years in Detroit. And that was the bump and ground Era. What is true is that Stackhouse needed the ball. And was a Generic MJ clone. But he never got a real chance to grow. Their was seasons in college and the pros that Iverson shot horribly because he was a volume scorer. But as he got just one 3 point shooter in Kyle K his fg percentage went up.

Stack house from 1999-00 season to 2002-2003 season was a top scorer. Kinda of a streaker shooter but that 2001 season he was putting up big scoring nights constantly

Work on your weakness in the off-season. Great athleticism that would work in a up tempo offense but his mid range game and shooting should’ve been better. Leadership is the other issue.

He also complained I think it was in Slam magazine at the time about playing with prime Grant Hill in Detroit which is crazy because Grant was unselfish. But it was more so because Grant was Point Forward he had the ball the most because he set everybody up. But Stackhouse was seeing it as ball dominant.

Great Video. Stack was a very good player. Limited handles, singled minded focused on scoring..never real made others better. He would have been a great 6th man. One of his biggest Stunts was going after Vince in the 00 Dunk contest. Appreciate this one

I'm a Sixers fan and loved Stackhouse first 2 years in the league. It was like... Finally we got a guy who's gonna grow into a star. Imagine if they could have made it work with him and Iverson. I don't know about stunted growth... The dude had a hell of a career.... Played for a second and a half and I think he won 6th man at least once.

I still remember him fondly from his time coming off the bench with the Mavs. Definitely provided some great scoring at times. I remember being really sad when Dallas got rid of Nick Van Exel (another guy people forget), but Stackhouse performed admirably in a limited role or had to start.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. In the 1995 Draft, having lost Clyde Drexler, and with a HUGE need for a Prime Time 2 Guard, I wanted SO badly for the Blazers to be able to trade up to get Jerry Stackhouse, "The Next Michael Jordan." Keep in mind my birth year, to show why I was so WAY off.

I remember thinking when I was a kid that Penny and Grant Hill were going to be Jordan like, and who knows if injuries hadn't shortened their careers. I never felt that way about Stack though. He was great in college and fun to watch his rookie year. I thought Sheed was going to be better when they turned pro together and he proved me right. That was a dope draft class!

Saying Stack was traded for pennies isn’t accurate at all. Theo Ratliff wasn’t exactly a scrub. Went on to be an All-Star, led the league in blocks 3 times and was a 2 time All-Defensive 2nd Team selection.

Stack would have been better if put at SF honestly. but Philly made the mistake drafting AI, they should have known that Stack and AI wouldnt be able to coexist. they should have drafted a player like Ray Allen or Shareef Abdur-Rahim or Marcus Camby. honestly, i would have traded #1 pick for Rasheed Wallace and reunited Stack and Sheed. Imagine what the Sixers could have built around Stack with the draft picks they had in 96 and 97. 95 got Stack, 96 get Camby, 97 get Van Horn? Philly could have built around Stack, they chose not to. When teams make a decision, it changes the fortunes for themselves and the player.

Saw this dude at my daughters graduation at Syracuse a year ago. Turns out his daughter went to Cuse. I saw him walking down the street near the stadium where the graduation was held and did a double take. Couldn't believe it!

I agree that he still had a good NBA Career. Any dude that has an NBA Career in double digits must have been doing something right? I guess maybe more was expected but to compare anybody to MJ 23 is just unfair. I did not know he was coaching at Vanderbilt, I bet you he'll be a good Coach.

Stack was the answer on a NBA Live trivia question for who had the lowest shooting percentage of starters that shot so many baskets. He played so bad after MJ retired, just so inconsistent.and didn't make anyone better.

This was definitely a fair representation of Stackhouse. I was one of those fans who was too young as a fan to understand that Stackhouse wouldn't be able to carry a team any distance. Apart from what was mentioned above, he was also a "meh" defender. So in the end, you were left with an NBA player who didn't really understand how you deliver in an NBA context.

He’s had NBA Players like Scottie Pippen Jr., Kenyon Martin Jr., & Darius Garland but how will his playing days mesh with his coaching style with Top 50 High School Recruits who like him have aspirations of going to the NBA??
