they didnt upgrade him because he is a NASCAR car, everything he has in him has alot of power, if they were to remove something to try to make him faster, they are basically down grading him. They didnt want to end up messing something up inside the car to where they cant fix it back.
Aaand this is all overriden with Planes 1 and 2. Dusty gets upgraded to go faster. I understand the engine is basically the guts and brain of the car but thats also altered with Dusty’s upgrades. In short, Cars 3 has a bad plot.
Nope there are many cars which are faster than nascars in the real world. They didnt upgrade him because changing performance is not possible in the cars univers otherwise the wealthy lemon cars in Cars 2 could have just upgraded themselves.
Mcqueen in cars 2 could beat storm as he beat a F1 car in a straight race which franseccio can go 220mph and McQueen won. And a young McQueen can go around 225mph as mcqueen was 40 years old in cars 3 rather then 20 in cars 1
I am an automotive technician and I have my own theory of why….when vehicles get older and older or when anything gets older and older they get slower…..So there’s 2 theories for me: they either didn’t have his parts anymore but had every other part of his build and axel rods. Because as technology gets older…certain parts become unavailable. However….we also have to think about the fact that sometimes….if we don’t want to replace the item completely but we don’t have the parts….we can use new parts….not all the time but sometimes we can. So that being said….Lighting’s top speed in Cars 1 was 212 miles per hour if Doc was cheering him on to go faster….his actual top speed if he didn’t want to wreck and was being safe….was 206 miles per hour. As I said before technology is always changing which is why top speed in 3 was 198…..we can notice Lighting after his upgrade because when he and Cruz become friends and are playing around Doc’s track….now Lightning can keep up with Cruz on pavement and be ahead of Cruz when off road….because he got new parts….. So he would have been able to beat Jackson Storm but he didn’t because he let Cruz race the second half to be nice. Not because he couldn’t. That’s my theory. I’m skipping the part about cars being human….because Cars isn’t real but it kind of is because sometimes we can’t get certain parts…..in time or can’t get them at all because they don’t make those parts anymore. But that does make sense for the movie because they have teeth, a tongue, Lightning gets the hiccup…..the only things they can do with themselves is use their horn, stop, go, use their tail hook, raise their ladder, and use their lights…..so when they break down….we might only be able to fix their car body….so that goes with the part that says: sometimes certain parts can’t be made anymore.
I’m certain The Piston Cup has “NASCAR-like” rules to prevent certain upgrades such as 3-wheel brakes, so perhaps you’re right. He’s probably not allowed to use certain types of aftermarket parts (the equivalent of using steroids in sports to “cheat” to win) but I find it difficult to believe they stopped making parts for him. He’s basically a popular, “celebrity” racer in the cars universe so there’s probably a huge market for whatever types of parts his model is, even if his model is older.

He’s a famous race car so they would have to have his parts but also think of this way….these cars are sort of human…I mean all of the vehicles have doors but they never open, everyone has teeth and a tongue, of course they can talk…including Red because we see Red talking to a reporter, crying and laughing in the first movie. He’s also very alert as well for someone who doesn’t talk much. Lightning gets the hiccups and Mater knows what ice-cream is and what pistachios taste like…so they couldn’t upgrade them because inside is not only parts but also human organs and parts….however they do break down which normally cars and trucks and buses don’t break down that easily….but we have seen McQueen and Doc crash and we have heard that Sally was broken down and Doc fixed her and we have seen Otis break down before…but they got fixed. Only thing is though is that like you said: they probably have to follow certain rules. Especially the racers and Miss Fritter and Mater….and Red for that matter. Go too fast and now that’s cheating…ish. Go too fast and you could crash or do your job wrong or cause a serious accident.
I hate that fucking series. Like they kinda fucked up the perfect way to give justice to Doc's career by having McQueen win instead of replacing him with Cruz (I don't give a shit about her gender, that would've sucked either way), but we still have a good ending for McQueen's character arc and aswell as Cruz's arc. BUT THEN CARS ON THE ROAD JUST TAKES IT AND TAKES A MASSIVE FUCKING TURD ON THOSE CHARACTER ARCS, EVEN MATER'S CHARACTER ARC IN CARS 2!
Lighting may not have gotten an upgrade because he was getting older, it could be that the new model that storm was had it’s own separate upgrades and engine and there were no upgrades for a old model car like McQueen. Also lighting was getting old in total, he would be in his early - mid 40’s during the movie and that’s when most professional athletes do start slowing down and retiring except for a few that continue playing. Besides storm basically had the exact same mindset and personality as McQueen did during the first movie.
Lack of good plot. Would’ve been empowering if Lightning retired in his own terms and retired after winning. They didn’t give Justice to Doc’s career. McQueen should’ve prove them that what they did to Doc was wrong. Like Doc Hudson, they didn’t even give McQueen full chance to show that he still got more gas left in the tank.
Here's my favorite theory, In real NASCAR cars you can't upgrade the car to make it faster, that's one of the main rules of NASCAR. So basically he is stuck like this.
Jackson is built with Lightweight Materials and has an Electric Motor to boost performance so even if Lightning could without replacing his entire body with a new one, the modifications would be limited.
Simple answer: The plot. Jackson Storm's speed is 214mph Lightning's speed was 212mph in Cars (2006) Only 2 miles behind Jackson, and if you pay attention Jackson only runs at 207mph each race, as you can see when Cruz is calling out his speed in the final race. Which means Lightning could pass him and beat him in a race easily, but Disney had to screw that up. Lightning's speed is 198mph in Cars 3 (Apparently because he's old) Which doesn't make much sense because Doc Hudson can still race the same way he did in Thomasville. So Lightning's age doesn't matter, especially since his parts were repaired. Lightning would've cooked Storm in Florida. But blame Disney.
Okay i have a major argument. Dusty in Planes upgraded himself 2 times in first movie (once on the beginning, second one After almost drowning) and we know it’s the same universe. So why McQueen couldn’t do that ? That just ducking up with fans right now, or making another character a main one couse everyone now thinks that men are weak or something. Like I get it we are equal as humans but that’s not an argument to ruin a whole movie just because we can. Dusty and McQueen are different vehicles in different races. Planes can upgrade as much as they want. Cars can do so too but in McQueen's case, he's literally built like a NASCAR car. Further upgrades will downgrade him pretty much, lol.

I think many are missing the point as to what kind of car McQueen is. He’s a stock car from 06 and if I’m not mistaken stock cars are not allowed to be taken to the track with modifications or anything of that matter. He by the book had to race as is. And he, much like real cars, is only as good as the technology was back when he was first manufactured
I think getting an upgrade would make things too easy. Also, if Lightning got a ton of upgrades, that would drastically change the driving dynamic of him. Although it could be possible that they could get away with removing the restrictor plate on the engine which already makes 750hp which is 200 more than what today’s NASCARs make on superspeedways. But upgrading would probably be a rule violation. The thing about that is Lightning McQueen is a previous generation racer going against the latest gen, but in this case it’s more like a comparison between gen 4 NASCARs and today’s NASCARs with the lighter centerlock wheels, 6 speed sequential trans, etc. In a nutshell, an upgrade would be too easy, probably isn’t plausible, and would probably be a rule violation.

Same theory for cars here they dont want to upgrade the cars to keep it simple for the kids that lightning doc got older the The King crashed into his last race while retirement that means he also got older same with lightning he got older in cars 3. something i noticed, was that in one part of the los angeles 500 race, mcqueen was going just as fast as storm so he probably went at least faster than 200mph. also im talking about the part after storm said enjoy your retirement

Theory 2/3 is dumb, but theory is a theory. Theory 1 is true. As google says, “the actual reason is, because there wouldn't be a ton of plot if that was the solution the creators went for. It also wouldn't create the plot they were going for, which was Lightning trying to keep up with The Youth, realizing and accepting he couldn't, and passing the baton to the next generation.” That means, he could beat everyone of them, but because of the creator, wanted a better plot, and not McL just beating everyone, they thought giving the race number up, to the new racer, gives a better plot. So I think McL could definitely defeat them all, he just needed, better creators story writing. watch "Cars 3 Deleted Scene - "The Storm Is Over"" McL, actually wins against storm, so basically, it proves, lighting could beat them all in the end.
It’s wasn’t even a trilogy for Lightning, it was just a duology which is Cars 1 and Cars 3 as Cars 2 serves more as a spinoff and as someone else in the comments said, Dusty from Planes got two upgrades which is the same world canonically. Cruz got a upgrade as well towards the end of the movie as her rear looked a lot more like the other gen cars. There was no excuse for Lighting to not have gotten an upgrade. This was mainly due to poor writing. It feels like they still owe us another movie as it only felt like a duology and not a trilogy and the whole retirement thing is bs as Lightning never learns and still continues to race at the end of the movie. The new hypercars should have had a different race instead of competing in the same race as the NASCARs like lightning.
His body is too old to go faster than he was in his prime, its like the organs theory, when cars get older they cannot go as fast as they was in their earlier years, and that now Mcqueen is an adult car.
Upgrade is possible from his engine not whole body ) for example you know that in cars 2 some bad cars blast other cars engine if car engine are blast then it's just a crush so the upgration was possible
Just saying in cars 2 when the one agent is being interrogated and he says "i can change an engine block" which should mean that he can replace the whole engine because to replace an engine block means removing the whole engine and if you can replace that important of a piece you should be able to put a better engine in also storms style or type car would be in a different class of racing
An idea i came up with is that yes McQueen could get a small upgrade as he is at a major disadvantage on the field at the end. However im thinking because his body, like his organs and stuff is not strong enough to handle going close to 220 like in cars 2. So i think mechanically he could but at the risk of harming him otherwise
lets just say that the Cars in this universe drop in performance really fast. So if McQueen wanted to get faster/go as fast as his young days, he would need to have basically his entire body replaced (A full body transplant for a human). Maybe not just his engine was subpar, his axle, fluid chambers, pumps, radiators, heck maybe even his chassis is too outdated to handle faster speeds, so he would lose traction and control if he tried to go faster. We can also put in metal fatigue on vital structural parts, so if he wanted to get faster? He doesn't need a few upgrades, he needs to get a total overhaul. Basically in the racing world, his current body is as good as a totaled car and trying to fix it would be basically giving birth to a new Car.

XR is correct, They *can* open their doors. they're revealed to have interiors, as seen in Cars 2 when one of the cars has their eyes on the headlights rather than the windshields and you can see inside the car. also, when various cars are damaged throughout the trilogy, their doors can be seen partially ajar from being bent/broken off.
I think about it like this: If you have a fully functional heart, but there's a donor with an even healthier heart, you wouldn't get the organ transplant It's like that, Lightning is fine how he is, he's not in need of an upgrade Edit: Nvm, if the rich one didn't upgrade, then it's not possible lol

He didn't get and upgrade because the difference between piston cup race and the world grand prix is that Nascar cannot get and upgrade it's part of the Nascar rule and the world grand prix your allowed to upgrade just for better grip and handline through tough terrains on the road
It could be because his body probably wouldn’t be made to handle the engine. But that could be debunked because of Cruz. So my only theory is that it would be illegal to upgrade yourself and your engine.
I think its simple. Just like real life, you can only upgrade a car so much. Its exactly why in GT racing, teams will upgrade to a completely new model every so many years. Eventually new parts just arent compatible with older designs. I use GT as my example since McQueen is based off a corvette. A C6 is awesome buy even in its best state, it cant compete against the newer C8s.
I have one argument in Tokyo mater they did get upgraded so why can’t McQueen because it could help with airflow,aerodynamics,downforce and boost from cars1 from the tuners he had nos and snot rod had a clear customised supercharger.We humans can’t input ai technology inside us to make us better so why would cars be able to and in cars 1 didn’t doc preform surgery or smth on the police man sorry I forgot his name so if the cars have organs why can’t he just get surgery?
The planes movie is where dusty if i get his name right dusty got an ugrade he was faster then his old self so it took place in same universe right so that means if planes can get upgrade so can cars.
If McQueen is slow because he is old. then in cars1, doc hudson shouldn't have been able to 'practice' in the radiator springs dirt loop because he's going to 'die of old age' in a few years before cars2. Look at dinoco's King, he retired in a better way than McQueen with his midlife crisis. Also, Jackson storm and the "new gens" should've raced against lewis hamilton and jeff gorvette in GT racing rather than McQueen with those specs

how are rocket boosters not cheating in a piston cup race? the cars 2 race I get, because that was a world-class race (any type of vehicle, any type of propulsion, any type of equipment to win it) but I would think there would be rules against that in piston cups
If McQueen got the upgrade from Cars 2 we would had a chance to beat Storm because in Cars 2 McQueen beat Franchesco because McQueens Maximum speed is about 249MPH but when they went home he went back back from this old stock style...if McQueen kept thr style it would be a different story in Cars 3

It wasn't a upgrade, we just saw her get a wing and next gen racers are built with bodies, aerodynamics and powertrain that are about insane performance which you can see they have Teardrop shape bodies, Teardrop shape plays a big part in speed & performance.
