WHY METAL MOVES AND BENDS WHEN YOU WELD IT. 

I literally just spent most of my day searching and searching as to why my squares were not “squaring” up at the end. Didn’t find jack anywhere until 11 o’clock at night. Much appreciated man gonna tackle the project and hopefully get it right tomorrow!

Very well done. We do a lot of large and heavy stainless weldments. That stuff is much worse for weld pull than say A36 or other mild steel. In some cases they give us what they call weld maps showing the process or sequences to use to reduce the pull as much as possible. Very good video and you are spot on with your thinking and explaining.

Yep, I still get caught out occasionally, I tend to go for the fast tacking up thing as you described, sometimes I'll tack one side up and then weld the opposite side and this pulls it square but I started doing that for some jobs after I got my bandsaw which cuts 90° and 45° dead on so the material butts up square.But I still keep checking for square as I go, that way, if its pulled, I usually only have one weld to cut out.

Thanks for this video Matt, like in all of your videos, you always give good sound practical advice. I'm particularly interested in distortion control, as I have been asked to weld / make up a big pair of gates and obviously want to do a good job. - I know there could be much more work to come my way if I do.

Good information, thank you. Are there any tricks for welding a panel on a car (not clamped to table). Any suggestions on how to keep panels from warping? I"m just learning how to weld and found my first practice piece warped all to heck. Thanks

Super smart man. Thank you for the tips, as this has been a major pain in my asshole while trying to weld up an up pipe for my turbo. .060 stainless 3” tubing, tons of pie cuts, super hard to find a way to clamp the pieces. It’s been a nightmare for a newb like me...

Usually I just angle it a bit more so when it contracts it shrinks into the proper shape :/

Yes about the weld maps, you are correct for us this is a drawing where the individual welds are numbered for the welding sequence. Not totally sure about any software for making these calculations. I believe they mostly are from mistakes and experience. The engineers collect the information and put the instructions on the drawings because the parts could be welded by different persons or a new person. Usually if you follow the drawings even for the first time you weld up one it always works out good. These are usually for recurring jobs like two or three a year but not high volume. Can a spring be bent using a welder and thus be reshaped? What way will it bend? I am guessing it will bend toward the bead side. But will it still act as a spring?

In theory if you clamp it so tight that it dont move the weld would be damaged or crack as it shrinks

Don't you do the fillet weld last cause it has most pull?
