Pretty much everything has become purely corporate. There is no art anymore, because being artistic isn't whats best for the bottom line. Maximizing profit margins is all that matters. And that means always following market data and focus groups, instead of letting any of your employees do anything they actually want to. It means manipulating your customers instead of attracting them. And it means never ever taking risks, despite risk being a necessary part of making worthwhile products. Sure, this has been true of the biggest corporations for a long time. But they have become so absurdly huge at this point that they no longer need to pretend they aren't doing it. They are too big to fail, and too big to succeed. The video game industry is the most obvious example of this. Microtransactions are literally anti-game mechanics. Nothing about them is ever fun, and you usually end up having less game after you buy them. They do nothing but make games worse for the players, and only exist for the executives and investors behind the game. They are deliberately sabotaging their own products, and expect us to thank them for it.

I get so frustrated when I meet a new person and find out they play video games... but they only play ONE game. This happened recently with two or three people that I met, one only plays COD and the other only plays Valorant, and the only reason they play is because their friends play it. This is why single player games with stories are a dying breed... people just want to run around the same map in circles and shoot at each other.

While there have been a few diamonds in the rough (e.g., DOOM 2016, BOTW, RDR2, Elden Ring), I have had immensely more fun playing indie games like Stardew Valley, Hades, and Celeste. Roughly, the pinnacle of gaming falls somewhere within the 90's / 2000's range, and its been downhill across several variables for many years now. The problem with games nowadays is the fact that they took challenges away such as completing a game on the hardest difficulty or solving a riddle/puzzle and at the end you'd be rewarded for it, it was unique to you and was a statement/trophy proving you did something others had trouble doing and was respected for, not just that but you felt accomplished for doing it. Nowadays people and devs have gotten lazy and made it where you can just buy it now so overall gaming lacks challenge, purpose and goals to encourage you to play more and motivate others as a result.

Honestly all these videos recently about "oh video games are dying/stagnating/whatever" are just evidence to me of one of the absolute most insidious things that big publishers have done. It's not microtransactions, it's not live services. It's the fact that they get so many gamers to think that they, the AAA groups, are the ONLY game in town. I mean, I sit here, observing all this and watching videos like this one, and I'm constantly baffled. For me, excellent games are the NORM... not the exception. As far as I'm concerned, gaming is absolutely thriving. But, that's because I stopped buying AAA games many years ago. I found Isaac and Spelunky, dove into the world of indies, and never looked back. It's been one amazing game after another, over and over and over again. Some are more well known, such as Enter the Gungeon. Others are far more niche. But there's SO MUCH GOOD out there, and more constantly coming out. And yeah, there's some bad eggs in there, devs that try to take advantage of this side of the industry, but I find that most indie fans are a lot less willing to just eat garbage, so to speak, and will tend to completely flip the heck out if a given developer does something nasty. Whereas most AAA fans will just eat it all up and then ask for more, while complaining about it at the same time. It's not JUST that though. One thing that really, really bugs me is that the AAA guys made ENTIRE GENRES seemingly disappear. Note the word "seemingly" though. It seems to many like it's all FPS games or things with grindy levelling systems like Gotham or... er... more FPS games, but... yeah. "Seems". In reality all the missing genres have been there all along, some absolutely thriving (roguelikes in particular), and innovation everywhere. But you have to, you know, actually BROWSE a bit to find these, whereas the AAA guys come screaming at you and shove their stupid nonsense up your nose without you doing anything at all. Not to mention that most of these games cost waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy less, but give more value. Seeing someone get like 8 hours of buggy, predatory gameplay out of a $60 game that has a lot of MTX in it saddens me, when I'm over here paying like, $8 for something that'll give me 50 hours of non-glitchy gameplay without any of that MTX garbage. Seriously, the whole "gaming is dying" is just an illusion. An illusion that is VERY easy to break through, by just... you know... exploring a bit. The trouble is getting people to actually try that. Though I do notice that more and more ARE doing it as time goes on, which isnt too surprising, considering just how far the AAA side has fallen now.

Which is why I ignore most of these people. They complain gaming is in a horrible state, but they don't even bother searching for good games. They just lazily accept any AAA trash that's thrown onto them through marketing. I could stay here recommending great games all day long. I got almost 130 games in my Steam library and most of them were cheap as fuck and are amazingly great. And man, that's because I don't have the money, most of these games are either F2P, really cheap, got for free, or people gave me as gifts. If I had the spare money, I'd have so many more, because there's really a shitton of amazing games out there. So... no, I'm not about to buy this apocalyptic talk of "gaming is dying" either. I don't even buy this talk that lootboxes and bla bla bla is a problem at all. "Oh my god, this game is bad because lootboxes!" don't play it, you don't have to. "But people are normalizing it so every game is now shit because of it", that's false, as already pointed. If people want to be dumb and spend a shitton of money of colored pixels, let them! It's their money, it's their skins, it's their gambling addiction. There are way many more games out there you can play that aren't like that, you aren't entitled to get the game you want the way you want. People should learn to buy the food they like and let other people buy the food they like. Not all food needs to suit to your tastes. Ok, sorry, I got a little carried away xD

@@SirZelean @Zeke Lionhart I can understand the bit about lootboxes and such. Watching these companies prey on people who either cannot resist (addiction issues) or who outright cant see the problem (neurodiverse, or children) is getting real old, real fast. Not to mention people having to watch beloved IPs become corrupted, shambling husks that barely resemble what they once were. Heck, the new "Diablo" is JUST psychological tricks... there's absolutely nothing else to it. That series is likely very, very dead now. There's no way in heck D4... if it ever comes out... will step away from that. And THAT irritates people. Cant blame them. Yeah, as you said, they can avoid buying into it, but they cant avoid the fact that their favorite game series was drenched in slime... sticky slime that will never come off. Aside from that junk though... yeah, it's frustrating to watch people just ignore good games out there. Like, I was watching a video recently that was a retrospective on Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, which is a game that was well known for having incredible writing/story/voice acting, and there's a ton of people in the comments lamenting how "there hasnt been anything like that in so many years, and there probably wont be again because publishers think it's too risky". And I'm sitting here thinking "there's plenty of great stories in games these days! Just get up and go look for things and get out of your comfort zone for once!" but good luck getting THAT through to them. And if they were to just explore Steam and then wait for a Steam sale, they could have a game that's usually like $20 for about $1 instead, since Valve loves doing that. So many good reasons to go check this stuff out, but they just wont do it. And that's not even getting into things like Itch io (where most things have a "pay what you want to support the devs if you'd like") or Humble Bundle. It's easier than ever to get new games, but so many wont even try (or arent even aware). Also good freaking grief RU-vid, cant I even post one comment without a glitch festival happening? aaaaaaaaaagh

If that happened to Diablo 15 years ago, I would be flipping mad. But now I'm all for individual freedom and individual responsibility. It's okay you are mad, but it's not okay to go screeching around and so governmental force to stop companies from doing their games. There ARE people out there who like those types of games, as much as the community wants to victimize them all. Even though are are people out there who are addicted and need help, not everyone belongs to the same basket. And even in favor of those addicted, I don't think banishing these types of games from the planet is a good idea. That's not how addiction works. You don't protect someone who's addicted by removing the source of their addiction. They are dependant, they won't stop being dependant if you do that, they will just move to the next best thing. This practice is not sustainable. They way I believe is right is actually helping these people. Showing them they need help, showing them the way to find help, helping them become stronger and able to avoid being addicted in the first place. This way literally everyone wins, except it's harder than to just scream on the internet about how you think lootboxes are bad and companies are evil (I'm not implying you do that xD). And I don't even think being mad about a franchise is justified. As I said, if I was younger I would be, I understand how it is. But now I see this as just... Pixels in a screen. Sure, I agree about how much of an art games are, how COMPLETELY AMAZING of an experience they are - I wouldn't pursue a game design career if I didn't understand that. But still, being mad about it? There are so many important things to worry about out there, what's the point of being mad about a bunch of pixels on a screen, a bunch of pixels you won't even see anyways because the company screwed up on their making? Diablo Immortal won't change Diablo 1, 2 or 3. If you don't play it, it's like if it never existed. You don't have to waste your precious time thinking about this kind of stuff, you know what I mean? And also, Legacy of Kain is... Chef's kiss! 🤌

Honestly, my two most favorite games, Terraria and Hollow Knight kind of show how much the Indie scene is picking up the pieces from Triple A games to make something amazing. No paid for DLC. You pay for the game and you get a finished product. Developers even continue to release more content for the games regardless if it is profitable or not because gaming is seen as an art and nothing less. Ugh, this topic has been talked to death. We get it, microtransactions bad. But although it may play a part in why games aren't fun anymore, it's not the main reason. Firstly, before I give me reason for why I think modern games suck, I'd like to quickly address that the microtransaction issue is something that primarily plagues live service games. Most AAA single player games do not have microtransactions. The problem with modern gaming is that AAA developers are too focused on trying to bring you an "experience". They have these beautiful graphics, enriching stories, cinematic combat and gameplay. In other words, they're trying too hard to be movies. Games aren't supposed to be movies. They're supposed to be fun and exciting with deep gameplay mechanics. AAA games no longer strive to be fun. They strive to be accessible and to appeal to the widest possible market. People hate me when I say this, but for lack of a better word "normies". That's who game companies are trying to appeal to. They can't be too complex, they have to have a million different accessibility options to make the game easier, that makes easy mode look like dark souls. And they have to make everything super politically correct and woke so they get high critic scores. But most importantly, it has to be familiar to the audience they're marketing to. If it's too outside the norm, then they won't like it.

But they are making them less enjoyable. The issue is the lack of variety, deep mechnics, and engaging story. If the game is missing 2 of these things and are filled with microtrans actions and grind. It will lose favor. Microtrans action and grind arent the issue they just make the expreince worse on games that are already not that good.

I recently quit Asphalt 9 after 3 years. In the past, it was the one live service game I decided to go for since I like racing games and being a mobile game, it runs even better on the Windows port which is surprisngly active with multiplayer action as good if not better than even the newest Need for Speed or Forza. I paid for the season passes for a couple years and spent hours grinding "to get my money's worth". Slowly, but surely, the monetization started to become more aggressive, players paying more and getting less with every update. It opened my eyes to just how these business decisions slowly turn the screws on their customers to monitor their change in profits that much more closely and wonder just how it affects other games I simply don't put my time or money into. I only buy games as is usually. DLC is tricky because it can be a complete turnoff for a game, or be good enough that you buy a whole console (Kazuya main in Tekken since 2006, bought a Switch when they put him in Smash in 2021 and legit 90% of my total Switch usage is just for that). TL;DR This'll only get worse for some games depending on the developer and publisher team. If everyone in the world stopped pre-ordering, that'd be good first step

That's exactly what is, imo. It's not that gaming suddenly became trash, it's the many gamers are older, with less time and are much more discriminating with what kind of gaming experience they want. There were definitely alot of great games back in the day, but also a ton of garbage, it's just the we either remember that garbage with nostalgia or just remember the games that were actually great. There's plenty of games out there, enough for any taste but you need to research and look for them, the AAA space is gonna chase the money first and foremost cuz many of them cost a hundred million or more in production and marketing and they need to get that ROI, it's just business sense, like it or not.

The saddest part is that microtransactions on cosmetics isn’t the worst, because at least they don’t hurt the balance or the game play. @ShinjiIkari007
@ShinjiIkari007 Год назад
Very simple reason. Modern AAA games are spending more money on marketing & paid reviews than the actual development of the game. And even in the development they focus on all the wrong things like they spend millions of dollars just on things like graphics rather than focusing on making the gameplay fun & having a unique concept to sell the game. They are inflating their budget & cuz of that they can't take risks cuz if the game flops it would be a huge loss. Like the entire studio can shut down in some cases due to it. So they copy tried & tested formula, make generic games, don't take risks & put microtransactions so that even if the game flops they can breakeven. Gaming is dead. It's not about fun & creativity anymore. Its not about providing value anymore. Everyone's just making the same shit & consumers keep buying the same shit over & over again.
