Another interesting thing is the writers taking the idea of "that thing you're scared of is more scared of you than you are of it", something I'm sure most people have heard their parents tell them, and working that into the actual plot of the movie by having the monsters literally be more scared of the human children than the children are of them.

Y'all definitely won't know this beforehand, but during the trash compactor scene, there were two agents searching for traces of human with something that clicks like a geiger counter. When these two saw Sully, they instantly abandoned their jobs to ask for his autograph. What you might not realize is the fact that the geiger counter were clicking wildly when it was directed as Sully, but the agents were too lost in their fangirling that they didn't even notice it (they even turned it off!). I rewatched the movie not too long ago, years after I last rewatched it, and the only reason I noticed this was because I'm studying nuclear engineering, so geiger counter clicks pretty much incites a pavlovian response from me. I wouldn't've been able to discern it otherwise.

Considering that we find out that the CDA knew all along that humans weren't dangerous but they still have geiger counters to detect human stuff, it is entirely possible that all scarers would trip them do to their time in the human world so these agents were actually not worried about it to begin with.

I think so much of it has been from the seeming obsession with sequels upon sequels all to milk popular IPs for toy revenue. Like as much as I crave more monsters inc content, MI was so well rounded and fleshed out that it really doesnt need a sequel. They tried to do something with monsters at work, but I feel that it just takes away from the original movie and thus try my best to forget it exists. I truely wish that the industry as a whole could move back more to producing complete stories in single movies instead of relying on sequels to sell interest.
@sophieamandaleitontoomey9343
This movie is so good that Pixar has desperately tried and failed to recapture it. Unfortunately for them, they’re no longer the creative and daring studio they were when they made this film and they can make the mediocre MU and forgettable monsters at work. He didnt use them all. You can see as Sully is pushing his sleigh out of the cave, he used hardly any of the supplies. I like to think for multiple reasons. 1. He knows Mike couldnt cope with being banished and after he calms down, realises he is going back to monster world and will want to go back too. 2. Doesnt want to take everything from the snowman as he was very helpful, giving shelter and food. 3 He knows how truly capable Mike is on his own.

One brilliant part about the movie often understated is how it disarms the idea of monsters. If you were of the age where you actually believed monsters might be in your closet (like I was when I saw this movie for the first time), seeing that monsters are actually scared of kids and will go away if you no longer get scared is a really encouraging and comforting thought for imaginative kids.

I've been watching Monsters University basically on repeat, and hearing you flesh out Monsters Inc. made me realize a detail I've missed. In M.U Dean Hardscrabble told Sully that his roar wouldn't make a child scream it would make them cry, and in the scene in M.I. when Sully scares the robot and Boo in the simulator, he uses the same face expression and roar, which makes Boo cries from fear and she doesn't scream. I just thought this detail was pretty cool, and that the writers for both movies had a great idea and executed it perfectly. :)

I always got the feeling between his MI personality and being constantly overlooked or nearly forgotten in MU, he probably moved a lot as a kid. That's why he seemed closer with the adults than the kids his own age even in college. Sure you could say it's because he was a nerd, but I feel like part of the reason the factory caught his attention so strongly was the team aspect of it. And if he was moving a lot as a kid, that one goal of becoming a scarer being like the big leagues in their world (they even had trading cards) was what drove him to study so hard. So I like to think he did meet Sully at one point and was excited to see him again only to realize the guy doesn't remember him and he only thought Sully was cool because his dad was, but they learned after moving in together that Sully was jealous of him because he did so much better in school back then. And he still did here in college.

One of my favorite things about this movie is how all of the character designs are multipurpose. Sully and Waternoose genuinely look friendly and comforting when they’re just hanging out or being normal, but get genuinely terrifying when they are trying to be. Randall can be pretty intimidating with his unique set of powers, but his slick and calculated movements also shows his calculating and sleazy side. Mike and a few other “helper” monsters are designed to be otherworldly, but “normal” enough to for us to be able to contrast them with the “scarers”, to show what ordinary monsters look like. Even Celia, who was obviously just designed to make a more feminine looking monster, has the ability to crank up her intimidation factor during her “woman spurned” scene due to her Medusa hair. When I was younger, I was more scared of her in that scene than Randall.

It seems that everyone just remembers it for being very funny and the emotional scenes (which are valid as those parts are amazing as well) but the writing itself and the characters are so, so solid. Everything makes sense and all partes intertwine with each other, it’s so clever. Waternoose is a perfect example of how to do a realistic twist villain! The opening sequence with the doors also serves to set the tone of the movie. Originally, it just opened with the beginning of the movie, the scare stimulator, but Pixar felt it was too dark. Colorful drawings of doors bouncing around to an upbeat instrumental song does a lot to soften how scary the scare simulator starts out.

Also a nice detail I didn't notice until several watches is that Roz is so up tight about Mike filing his paperwork because she's handling it all. It's a funny bit when Roz slams the shutter on Mike's hands, but it also subtly hints that when Mike asks for a door Randall was using, Roz is checking her records (which are probably very strictly detailed) right then and there to find out why Randall had a door when he shouldn't even be using it, especially in the off-hours. It also explains the running joke about her asking if Mike filed his paperwork on time or correctly: she needs him to do his job right so she can do hers right. It barely adds to anything, but it's a great detail that I just wanted to share.

That's the excuse the directors came up with after university came out. They know that for the first movie, they wanted to be that they knew each other for that long, but has since been changed after many rewrites for university where they decided that they met in college, even with that comment in the first movie. The excuse is the best excuse you can come up with to save it and make the continuity make sence. (Though there is a graduation photo in their living room. And we know for sure that they didn't graduate from college as they were expelled)

Monsters Incorporated is a timeless masterpiece. One thing that always stuck with me was the soundtrack, it is perfect. It's impressive that Monsters Incorporated was Pixar's first big hit, and the following year in 2004 they released Finding Nemo, which is debatably better. From 1999 to 2005 Pixar was killing it with classic after classic. I feel very lucky to have grown up as a kid watching Pixar movies and even enjoy them as an adult. I never understood all the adult aspects and themes that are apart of Pixar films, and that is why Pixar movies are so special because children, teens & adults can all appreciate each movie in their own way.

@jvalley8897

I think what sets the burp joke apart from anything seen in the Despicable Me or Shrek movies is that the burp joke is cathartic. It's not setting up the character at the beginning of the movie or thrown in to get the kiddies to giggle every 15 mins. It comes at the end of the movie as a mirror of how the movie started. Not only are we happy that the monsters don't have to scare the kids anymore, Mike now gets the spotlight (literally! ) and is able to show his skills off in the best way possible. I think there is also something even funnier about it since he tries his best to get the kid to laugh with slightly higher-brow stand-up but in the end has to resort to amplified burps.😂 The joke has layers! Like ogres!

One thing I appreciate about this movie more than any other media that has "the human world but "insert property" is different" is how grounded the story was. Too many movies like that make a world where your supposed to feel immersed into it, but throw you into wonderland because they need to bash over your head that it's animated in a world that's clearly different. Waternoose is a businessman, and he sees children as a resource. He recognizes the growing population and the limits of his workers doing one-off scares, but finds out that he could abuse that resource artificially to produce more in a day than his best of the best could make in a month. He's a businessman down to the fact that he disassociates feelings and pain over profit and helping the modern world, even to the point of getting rid of anything that will stop or slow him down. Don't even get me started on why the rest of the plot is so good in that regard.

Totally agree. Waternoose was also impiled to get the CDA to also arrest Randall when he tried to frame Mike and Sully for the crime. Yes who is the mastermind and who’s idea it was is debatable by fans. What also makes Randall and Waternoose unique is despite working together they had different motives. Randall’s motives were more selfish because he only wanted to be number one in the scare records and Waternooose wanted to save the company from being bankrupt and I do think he did regret his actions when he heard of Sully’s idea of using laugher for power.

47:23 I love how Celia uses the scare record against Randall. What was once his main motivation becomes a mere inconvenience to him now that the truth is all revealed. Contrast that with the scene where he overtakes Sulley for a few seconds, it's like night and day. 37:09 And my mind is blown after all these years about Mr Waternoose knowing that was Boo in that costume all along! He brought up the scare demonstration in that moment, because he WANTED Mike and Sulley to bring Boo straight to him, and it worked like a charm! He ignored what Sully was trying to tell him in that scene because he WANTED Sulley's roar to scare Boo and get her to reveal herself in a way that wouldn't imply he already knew she was there, which would ruin the plan! Why else would Randall have been there, ready to open the banishment door?! He set the trap in plain sight using an organic conversation with Sulley from earlier that was genuine, and was also set up organically by the terrible recruits at the beginning! He switched intentions right in front of us and we had no idea! Then Mike and Sulley trap him in the same place that he trapped them! That's genius storytelling!!!🤯🤯🤯

would like to point out that on the scene where waternoose pretends not to recognize boo as a human in disguise, he's also surrounded by the kid cleanup agency. if he were to bring attention to the human being there, it could ruin his company's image and possibly even get it shut down due to health concerns - not to mention that with such a close eye kept on the company he wouldn't have been able to continue his real plan. in that moment it was in his best interest to feign ignorance until the safety check up was over in order to solve the problem later on himself.

The teaser trailer can be said that it's not cannon as it's just a teaser. But there is one thing they missed out on that will completely throw off everything. A very small detail that the directors may jave forgotten about or not realise. In Mike's and sullys apartment where they were trying to avoid boo, there is a graduation photo of them. Amazing review, the only thing I kinda disagree on is the thought that tons of movies ripped off the idea that "the villain being recorded about their true nature without their knowledge" is specifically from Monsters Inc. It's actually a fairly common trope that existed way before MI. Not downplaying the scene in the slightest (execution of the trope was still excellent) but it's not something MI invented and they shouldn't be fully credited for the idea itself. Another reimagining I had of the fourth grade line was that Mike essentially said "you've been jealous of me before we even met." Obviously that was not the original intention behind the line but I just thought it was an alternate, nifty solution in a retrospective meaning. Like I said, awesome review. There were things I hadn't thought of at all that you brought up that made me appreciate it even more than I already did.

One of the things I love about monster's university and monsters ink is Mike's whole arc and how if you watch them in chronological order he does actually get his dream in the end, only instead of scaring he makes kids laugh. And what makes it perfect is this small detail in MU when Mike goes to the human world the kid laughs at him which at the time is devastating to him because it shows he's not cut out to scare, but he is however perfect to make kids laugh which makes that one moment perfect foreshadowing for the end of Monsters Inc and how Mike does achieve his dream in the end, it's just not exactly how he wanted it to be. Which is exactly what his entire arc, and MU as a whole, is about and I love how that theme still ties perfectly into his character even in the first movie.

Sulley is my personal favourite due to being the ‘scariest monster’ yet being the least monstrous character at heart but Mike is still equally awesome because you’re lead to believe that he’s quite annoying and dependent on Sulley but he just wanted to achieve what they’ve spent their lives working towards and in the last 20 minutes of the film he saves Sulley from Randall, exposes Waternoose as a villain, becomes the best employee at making kids laugh and fixes the door for Sulley to see Boo again. Monsters university helped me to not have high expectations as a disabled person. Too many movies were made where the moral is always about how you jave to keep going and try hard to get what you want and your dream will come true. Some people are just built different and can't do things no matter how hard they try or now much you want it. A blind person can't be a race car driver no mater how hard they try. I think ratatouille kinda has that hidden message too. "Anyone can cook". Doesn't mean that every can or should cook or have the talent to do it. It just means that the talent can come from anyone but not EVERYONE.

Besides disabilities, this can also be related literally to students picking a course of studies that they realize is not the right thing for them. This movie actually came just at the right time in my life when I started a course of studies that I realized was not the right thing for me, and chose a different course of studies that suited me much better and that I was successful in.
