I respectfully disagree, raising is definitely fine, but calling on the BTN specifically has a similar EV to raising in this spot. You are 3-betting MP which has an overall strong range in general and MPs flatting range is already ahead of your 3bet range - KQs, KJs, AQ, 66-TT; if this player was a complete fish then thats a different story as we’d like to get in position and isolate. Not saying QJs is a bad 3-bet, but its given you are on the button, against and mp range, the EVs are very close. Especially in today’s game, many players habe a decent understanding of gto opening ranges;
@sanjeesathasivam7794
@sanjeesathasivam7794 5 лет назад
James Evans correction to my comment, I meant to say against the bluffing portion of the 3bet range. Clearly your JJ+ and AQ+ has a higher equity; when you are adding QJs using a merged 3 bet range, you would be behind a good part of MPs flatting range. Hands like suited aces perform better as bluffs against mps range as villain isnt flatting many Ace x hands and your suited aces have higher equity against the flatting range. With a suitedAx you block the nutted part of villains 4 bet range (AA,AK and AQ); with QJs it plays well multiway especially on the button since you will realize your equity much better. As noted, the EVs of raising anf 3 betting qjs on the btn are very close; A typical BTN flatting range is very wide and is intended to flat a lot of hands, simple math on equit realization- if you run it through a solver you will see why- the EV of 3 betting in HJ or CO is more reasonable as you want to take the BTN out and play the hand in position; but on the BTN they dont vary as much as noted in this video which seems to indicate that 3 betting is the clear cut play;

@@jamesevans2507 Imo you should do a bunch of randomizing just because it's a nice hand to have in our calling range and it plays terrible against a 4bet.

But if your EV is high on the BTN with an ADC and UTG had a AQ Why would you fold the a FCI when he could GDI the crocodile all the way to the chicken ranch with 3 hands on a gold fish in the back seat of a 52 coupe?

I think aggression is fine but if you 3-bet qjs then that implies you also 3-bet kqs, aqo, tt, 99, kts, etc. And if you did that the players in the blinds and the raiser would adjust at least live or when they have HUDS.

I stopped watching at the first hand example because it's flat bad to make a move just because you think someone is active. Unless you have 100,000+ against this opponent, you have no way of telling if he's just getting a run of cards. So let's say you 3-bet your hand and the guy does have QQ+ and 4 bets you. You now have to fold your position and your hand never gets to realize any equity. You have a hand that flops well and will gain more equity on the flop most of the time. Take a flop and evaluate your strength. I think this is one of the most underrated skills in poker. Also by 3 betting you are narrowing your range to hands you don't have.

This video could be summarized like so: 3betting is usually profitable. Yeah, it's a useful video, but it's not really breaking news. Calling is not bad on that spot imho: you can float him if the flop is good and that would be more +ev than just stealing his mini raise and going home happy about it. If you hit top pair, you could make money by extracting from his presumable c bet, that's more money than him folding. If you hit a flush draw, you can play the hand aggressively in position, potentially getting two streets worth of value. These cards have imense equity played in position against a loose aggressive player whose effective stack size is 40bb. What about implied odds? I mean, I love 3 betting (my 3bf is high as fuck for my field) but there is more than a way to skin a cat in poker and flat calling is not always gambling or simply a weak move.

Since this is a video made to teach poker can I use this video to breakdown how the guy in the presentation is in the gripsed (no puns) of concepts and not only contradicts himself during the video, he doesn’t generalise enough - and it is my claim that whether you are 3b to mix or totally as an exploit - this is the worst combo. The logic does not hold water CC vs aggro players is the best option because like your presentation master of poker says himself “you don’t hit flops often” or smth like that - the significance of that statement cannot be understated. It makes 3betting there - not good. Not good at all.

I'm 15 minutes in and while his point of most player not 3 betting enough is extremely relevant and a valid point, there hasn't been a single comment about how often villian cold calls your 3 bet. How often should you be C-betting when missing the flop when in position? How often should you be C-betting when 3 betting preflop from the blinds? 3 betting preflop is obviously the correct play in the listed example...proceeding when checked to on a flop of Kd 2C 8H is what I'd like to hear him talk about.

Another question: should we really bet 75% on A74r? This seems a crazy large bet on such an unconnected board, with either bluffs or our value hands. Seeing as this happens so often, wouldn't this reduce our overall average flop bet size, meaning 'betting any 2' surely becomes unprofitable

understanding 3-bet/4-bet ranges against various villain types is key
@jasonhounsell3297
@jasonhounsell3297 5 лет назад
This first hand really depends on a lot more factors. With 40BB effective -- let's say he's got 99 -- how often will he shove 4-bet? How often does he barrel off when he misses? How does he play post flop? How many calling mistakes does he make preflop? If he's a station 3-betting here can go real bad, but if he barrels a lot it's more profitable to call. As I said if he Jams any pair above 5's here then you might as well have 7,2 -- when you 3bet here do you want called or all folds? If you want all folds why would you take a hand with decent equity? Why not take AX that's got a blocker to many his call hands? This is not hard and fast - it really depends on a lot of tendencies as if your opponent never calls worse - your not letting them make any mistakes. They jam a lot hands that beat you and you can't call, and fold their J,10's

When we cap the villain OTT like this, of course the premise holds that xR caps villain OTT because I put it in the filter in there lol. In a tourney i wouldn't even consider 3Betting QJs there. I have reccently gotten out of my comfort zone 3-betting more, but i have found easier to do it in cash games. In tournaments i know how to reshove when short and recognize when i'm probably getting it through. This situation H has 65bb so i can imagine taking an aggressive route, but when you're a middle stack (30-50, might vary depending on tourney) i can't imagine 3-betting say 7/40 of my stack unless i'm pretty sure i have the best hand or it gets through. Guess i need to watch more closely player's tendencies and make the calculations. Obviously being a micro player my 3-bet gets called more often and by more players as well. So reasonable options will be to raise higher or call. When i've got 40 blinds i'm not thinking about raising higher, say 9 bb, so i just call.
@gripsed

More important than having the best hand is whether or not it gets thru. That's why we really want to focus on targetting 20-25% opening ranges with this play.

Great Video and good info. One main takeaway I got was how small the 4bet range/% is especially in this spot. Was interesting to dissect this one spot so thoroughly. My main question is from my experience in tournaments this size I have ran into alot of tight players who will limp/min raise JJs plus so if you 3Bet pre with a hand like QJs your being set up for a bad situation if you dont hit board perfectly. Also this opens the situation for a 4 bet squeeze super light from the blinds occasionally (usually from bad players). I'm speaking from some games I have played in which is the exception to the rule but I gathered that, percentage wise, you will come out ahead enough for this to be profitably implemented more than most players do. Keep up the great content and I look forward to the next video and the rest of the series!

@Nolan Wilson I am referring to specific instances i have experienced in live tournaments with buy ins ranging from around $50-$350. (I believe Alex specified in the Vid that this hand took place in a $150 tourney so similar stakes) It mainly happens at one specific Cardroom I have played at but there are a decent number of players who will "Set Mine" and try to trap with pocket big pairs like this. But buy in wise it is far from Micros and I agree with you but oddly enough I have gotten better play from Micro players, usually deeper in the tourney, than some live players with $100 and up Buy ins. Just a lot of people don't respect the money. Thanks for the reply.

@@DDoz42 the reason you get better play from online players in these spots you mention is the psychological affect on live play. People hate to feel dumb and sometimes in live poker you just have to forget about revealing your holdings and play optimal play even if you are wrong in one specific hand. In online poker I can jam QJ suited in my underwear and never worry about my poker confidantes criticizing me .. when i tell them i won the 3 dollar 180 man tourney on pokerstars i may have made ridiculously bad moves but caught some luck. live play is very diff. Btw i play both styles and prefer live. But hate camera tables because now im feeling way more exposed. Poker can be like football 4th & inches. Make it hero turn over on downs dumbass

Not afraid, but 3 bet does not make sense. I am behind, in most cases. Nice to see if I catch a piece. If I catch a piece, I still may be behind. So you are telling me to get my money in while I am behind? This is a way to bet big, which can lead to wins but also big losses.
@alphabett66
@alphabett66 5 лет назад
It's math. With the betting lead you don't need to hit to win. Since most players play their hands, and fold if they miss, a 3 bet, and Cbet will take the pot down upwards of 70% of the time if you choose the flop cbets intelligently. If you 3 bet and take it down you make 5bb, which is what kings makes on average every time you're delt them. QJs is behind Ace high, but if you c bet 75% of the pot on 952 most people will fold ace high.

He's telling you to turn the situation around so your opponent is the one seeing if they can catch a piece, meanwhile if they don't catch you get to win the pot regardless of whether you hit or not. It's more volatile than the other strategy but in poker glory goes to those who gamble!

Thanks for the advice. I think the most important thing is getting a feel, ASAP, of each opponents’ range. Some are so tight that even a small raise indicates a big pair or AK. Against agro players, I agree with you, 3betting here is best. Against tighter players I prefer to just call, and when a lower flop comes, preferably with a straight or flush draw, betting it big.

In conclusion with informations that we have only play here is call ,in my mind.Now I hope to be proven wrong ,and learn something.

Its not my place I am not poker teacher ,and I dont wanna be ,but first thing you need to teach this people who listen to you is that every play (95% of plays) is situational ,and you can have 2 napkins and win. But I dont understand why you have choosen one spot that is clear call ,and .... Everything you told us here is ,in my opinion ,more or less correct ,but make the same video put J3off ,and it will be A+ advice ,you cant 3 bet in this spot ,and thats huge coming from me ,because I have higher % of 3 bets than vpip :) Anyways gl man!

Not saying you are wrong, you are a winning player and backup your strategy with numbers. I do think however QJs is not the BEST hand to 3 bet in this spot, ESPECIALLY against a loose player. With QJs you are crushing his range (example: Q9s), no need to protect as much as it's not a big deal if the big blind comes along. Especially against a fish i would call. If you 3 bet and get 4 bet you hate your life because you can't see a flop with a hand that flops very well. I much prefer to 3 bet hands like A5s, A7s, A8s, A9s, J9s, Q9s, KTs, KQo, ATo. Why these hands and not QJs? Because at least if I get 4 bet I have no problem folding these hands. They don't flop as well and need more protection vs. SB and BB behind. Thx for the video, amazing to have other players views.
@brushbackz1

Does your software take in to account the amount of times the initial raiser flats and calls down with certain ranges or check raises ect or does it just assume they're check folding to all c bets if they called vs fold or raise? Honestly don't know but it seems very relevant to the data set.

You can choose what hands the opponent continues with in the software. So you can get a gameplan vs a tight opponent, vs a loose opponent and anything in between. It's a really great tool flopzilla, and to get the most of it you combine it with your own reads and assumptions about your opponent.

How do you factor in how nitty a player is? When taking this approach wouldn't it be smart to not do this to everyone? If you wanna 3 bet the old lady at the table who has raised twice the whole game be my guest but don't you think its smarter to try to make a hand and work for a double up to these people who only play big hands and take them to the river against a preflop nit?
@gripsed
@gripsed 5 лет назад
To factor in how nitty a player is you adjust the range of hands they would open with or they would continue with. This will give you different numbers but math all the same you can work with. Every situation is unique, and when you plug the numbers in for each one your intuition will grow :)

Thanks for a very interesting video. I'm trying to incorporate more Exploitative techniques into my game, having attempted to approach the game from a 'balanced-range' perspective. However, as the instructor explained we can bet flop with any 2 cards, and how 'what is the guy thinking when he calls the 3-bet out of position', I thought about what I would think in Villain's shoes. He doesn't want to fold his equity, particularly if he knows that suited connectors can over-realise their raw equity. And he can plan to play aggressively on the flop (with a really aggressive check-raise strategy) on boards that favour his range, against an opponent whose c-bet frequency is way too high. So is the strategy actually really player-dependent? Or is this an exploitative move (100% c-bet) that we can use against all but the best players?
