Im 20 and taking my lessons currently and a 2 hour lesson is costing me £100. That plus the guarentee that insurance will have me over a barrel because im a new driver and the cost of buying a car and the fuel for it (fuel prices in the south west uk has only now started to decline) all make buying a car a dream and thus lessons pointless. There was a huge increase in people wanting lessons after our lockdown restriction would end which caused insanely long waiting lists and the cost of lessons went from £30 to £50 an hour. Since the south west of england is quite rural, there's not as many instructors around so they can get away with charging higher. Now the waiting list is barely a month and they refuse to lower the prices because (in my opinion) over the past 15 or so years, we've only ever been seeing prices for anything go up as if that's the normal progression. Therefore the stupidly priced lessons don't need to come down because prices coming down is a rarity. The only reason I'm getting my license is because I'm fortunate enough to have a job and for work, I'll occasionally nees to drive to sites.
keep in mind that this is in Finland. I was in the driving school in 2017 and the whole thing costed total like 3000 euros and luckily my parents helped me cuz i didnt have that kind of money
I got my license last year at 30. 2008-2009 would have been when I was supposed to get my permit and license, but my family was broke, so there was no way I was getting a car, nor could we afford to have one of our cars get damaged.
where i live in the uk our fuel cost is £1.45 per litre (mid sized town). Around $1.95. That's very low compared to most cities. During covid it was much higher and still hasn't fully recovered.
Dang i actually cried when i quit my first job. I remember asking to speak with my boss in his office and crying because i didnt feel like i was good enough for all the things he did for me. I offered to continue working and servicing until he found a replacement. We are friends to this day and we pick each others brains about problems that we have with our teams.
Same. The only thing that would change for me if I got my license is I’d have to start running errands but soon I’m actually going to need one so I’ll have to start working towards it soon.
Currently working on getting my learner’s permit (for the second time after i let the last one expire) at 20, and for me it’s as simple as where I live. I don’t really want to be learning to drive around Boston, y’know? They call us Massholes for a reason, shit is scary out here
Same exact situation for me, except 3 years older. I live in Seattle and don't need a car to get around. I can save a lot more money without a car so I'm not looking to get one even after getting a license. Thinking of getting a zipcar membership. I finally got my permit renewed last month and gotta seriously practice this time 😅
As someone who grew up in the Boston area, it can be daunting at first learning to drive there. A lot of people are just aggressive, but as long as you drive defensively you'll be fine. And if you can learn to drive in Boston, you can drive literally anywhere.
Boston was the worst place I've ever driven. So much traffic plus holy shit the tunnels suck. Kept missing exits because it's the only place I've seen exits in tunnels. GPS couldn't tell where the fuck I was.
I’m a senior in HS and finally getting around to it, just bc it has always been easier to take public transit, and I have been busy with school and stuff
i'll never get a car if i don't 1000% need one. even if i can magically one day afford insurance and maintenance expenses, i hate what car companies have done to the US and i will die on the hill of walkable cities and/or a transcontinental railroad.
I’m damn near 20 and don’t have mine. I lived in the city in high school and am in college now so I just don’t need it since the grocery store is 2 blocks from me and I am perfectly comfortable taking the metro (yes even at night, but this is more of a privilege of being a decently large dude) and with money money I save, I can get an Uber or 2 a month and come out way ahead. If I were to get it, i would suddenly have responsibilities I honestly just kinda don’t want, like driving grandparents and little siblings around. Also insurance is hella expensive. This may all be copium and I know I’ll need it eventually, but for now I’m happy to pay the price of being shit on by my friends every one and a while by saving $100s of expenses every month.
surely get the license while you still live near your parents. You still don't need to get a car or use the license until you have to, but if you wait and suddenly have to move for a job or need a car for some reason you'll be beating yourself up.
Didn't get my license until 26. Didn't need it because I live in London so there's plenty of decent public transport. If there's other options to get around then it's a waste of money for most people, particularly when you consider the odds of a crash and cost of insurance at young ages. Various small decisions like this have led to me saving a lot more than others my age so now at 29 I have a small house nearly paid off and a reasonably sized investment account.
as someone who just got my learners at way too old, cars are expensive, taking uber a couple times a month and public transit or cycling everywhere else comes out to be way cheaper than getting a license

When I got my car at 18, it was physically impossible for me to fill the tank for any more than like 44 dollars. Now, 3 years later, it’s like somewhere around 65 bucks for a full tank. It’s crazy, man. Thankfully the lower insurance payments have sort of equaled it out
I think it comes from a generation growing up on iPads and having access to insane technology so early on. I wanted my license at 16 so I can go to a friends house and play games on their Xbox and sneak into rated r movies. Now kids can hop on discord, play Roblox and Fortnite together, and leaving home means they lose a decent internet connection.
02:29 not entirely true, you can group buy gas shares the main issue is if the prices fall hard and they want to restock that holding tank they force you to get your 'shares' from the tank which has happened a couple of times in US
I think the oldest alpha is 2011 minimum, My youngest sibling is in 8th grade (2010) and as far as I can tell they and all the other 8th graders are generally more zoomer than alpha.
I had a bunch of health problems at the end of high school so I didnt get my license then, then I went to uni and was too busy with that, now I'm 25 and still havent gotten it. Finding the time is really annoying when you arent still in school.
I got mine a few days after my 19th birthday (I would’ve had it at 18 but I failed the test the first time lol), I wasn’t in a rush because I didn’t have anything to drive to. I went and got it because I knew I’d have to start driving to college a few months later. I’m sure a lot of other zoomers are in the same boat, there’s no need to drive because of how much of our lives are online. We don’t have to go somewhere to see our friends
I am 22, but it’s multiple things. Car payments being expensive, health insurance, phone, etc. Easier/cheaper to take a bus to work then pay 300-400 a month for a car
I’m a Zoomer with no license, and my whole family is obsessed with cars. I hit driving age during Covid, so it just didn’t feel necessary. Now that I’m in college in a different state, I don’t have the time to get it during my breaks while I’m back home
im 22, got my license when I was 18 b/c I was moving and needed it. If you just don't go out or are ok w/ public transit + the occasional uber ya really don't feel the pressure to. Also like SOMEONE u know has a car and will drive/pick u up
I disagree with the statement of not asking questions after 1 month. If you dont know something its WAY better to ask and be a little embarrassed than to be in the dark.
In Malaysia i got yelled at for asking question within the 1st week because apparently the 2 hour orientation on day 1 was suppose to be enough to cover everything. I quit that job in 3 months cuz the management was garbage
Had to get my license late due to bad hs scheduling. But I really had no desire to get one anyway no where I wanted to go and driving is statistically dangerous
I got my liscense at 22. My twin sister got hers at 17. We fall in the zillenial time frame. She wanted to GTFO of the house as soon as she could and I didn’t see the rush.
@@mr_0n10n5 next year when you are 25 your rates will drop a lot. mine got cut in half. but having an accident might make it tricky as they think you are a high risk driver. but once you are 25 it will help alot
Got my learners when I was 18. Didn’t actually use any of it until very recently (22). Many of my friends have licenses and don’t own a car. Too expensive, especially somewhere like California. The cheat code is electric cars are starting to overcome this. More up front cost but incredibly cheap gas and barely any maintenance .
What I don’t understand is that we have the lowest gas prices in the world. So how come every other country seems to be fine but our prices go up by a dollar and everybody fucking shit themselves
Got my permit and license at 18 only because I was going out of state for school and didn’t want to deal with it. I didn’t start driving till I was 20 and started “commuting” to work (a 5 minute drive) I just never went anywhere as a kid and was lucky enough to be walking distance from my highschool so why would I ever want to drive?
Millenial here - I dont have my license because I live in a big city with great public transport and simply do not need it. I reach my destinations with public transport and bikes and have heavy stuff like water delivered home. Saves a lot of money :)
im 21 still need to get my licence and upgrade from my learners. i have about 80/120 hours started when i was 16 but i dont like going cause my dad is scary :(

I quit a bad job at waffle house with a manager that I never really saw bc I worked 3rd shift. I remain at a "bad" job today bc my manager is great. So not quite tested completely

Genuinely good for you if you enjoy having a car. A lot of people are vocal about living car free/getting their license "late" when the topic comes up because the general public sees it as confusing and even embarrassing. My coworkers tend to pity me when I take the bus home, even though I enjoy the trip. But if you have a dream car and want to ride it until the day you die, then I'm glad you've found something that makes you happy.
