No that they actually COULD fire you for. In Japan they can't fire you for being bad at your job, so they promote you to a no work role but also it is specifically no interaction, like secretive, so they give you a piece of paper to sign per day. Now they can say the paper is business sensitive so you can't talk to other colleagues that aren't cleared to know about the paper. So then if you want to interact with anyone you're now breaching the contract and you can be immediately fired without pay. Or you can refuse the "promotion" which also gives them the ability to fire you without pay because you're not allowed to refuse "reasonable requirements" (which is basically anything that isn't asking you to commit a crime or have your body violated)

They would lock you in there if they were a black company. What're you gonna do, sue them? They can always sue you back for defamation.

Unless managment gives you a room in another building with no people, or people you don't know who are afraid of management being mad at them next. We're still talking about this happening in Japan, right? There's a reason such tactics don't exist in the rest of the world. Watched an anime a while ago where exactly the same thing happened. The guy was transferred (demoted) to a newly created positon with no coworkers, and his room was repurposed construction box placed in the parking lot. No one to talk to out there.

I’m all for Japan wanting to keep their culture intact. The other things, sure, but even then there are countries where women are truly treated as property, and while any sexism is bad, Japan isn’t anywhere near the really bad ones.

@@PurriahI mean “keeping culture intact” is different from treating all non-natives as outsiders (even those who’ve lived in japan for over a decade) as well as being quick to label them as dangerous criminals because they jaywalked once or had a party in their apartment that lasted a bit too late and having them deported. Japan also has a serious justice system problem if you look at their detective culture. Extremely high case solve rates are expected and so its common for detectives to just arrest and basically torture anyone close to the case (with a special prevalence of non-natives since the inherent xenophobia means their is less resistance to poor treatment/ false charges) which results in lots of false charges especially victims of crimes being charged with doing the crime.
