I really hope this remake excelled in sales so the company doesn't give up on this series. I confess I think I like this games more than the main ones.

The main ones gave many of the things reused by MD however lol. Including now these models although they're compressed. This game doesn't have to sell for the series to continue btw, it's a slightly improved remake. If anything they'll eventually change strategy, MD will not die, Super surely sold well and they made a single pause till now.

@@Terapagos3000 No, Super didn't sell well, it only sold slightly over 1 million compared to Explorers of Sky/Time/Darkness which sold nearly 6 million copies altogether. Chunsoft implied that Super Mystery Dungeon was going to be the last game. This remake seems to be a test to see if the series is still relevant and people still have an interest in it. If you don't think PMD DX is worth buying, that's fine, but for people that really enjoy the PMD series, the sales of these games matter. If we want the series to continue with new games, this game needs to sell well. I'm buying it because Red/Blue Rescue Team is a great game and I want to support a series I love, especially when the developers are not an extremely wealthy company (like Gamefreak) and actually put effort into their game's stories.

@@AuraKumo104 I really enjoy the pmd series and I think Red/Blue Rescue are great, and still this remake isn't worth it for me. I don't remember the statements about Super or if it was just the "definitive" md followed by a pause, however they already broke that statement as however it could be, statements over successful series are always temporary. You can ask for MD without having to pay for it, to then pay again for the actual new MD... I don't think it would be logical of anyone to consider a remake of that size a matter of decision over a series, but Super not selling much at least makes me understand why they would do a remake

That and it doesn't helpt that the newer PMD were hot garbage. (Forced myself to play through them and boy were they horrendous, they even managed to fuck up the balancing even more) None of them had even close the charm, athmosphere and love of the first two PMD-games. I do hope that the remake has some additional stuff in it, else i'd just grab my old cartridge and play that one again. Not quite a fan of the minimalistic backgrounds in the village, sadly. They looked a bit lazy in the demo.

One thing to consider as to why PMD1 was chosen to be remade: PMD1 is the only game in the series not to be dependent on the dual screen formula. Remember, as you mentioned, Red Rescue Team was released onto the GBA, which was a single screen system, like the Switch. Thus, if they still had the source code available, there's probably more code that could be reused than the other games, making it a cheaper game to test the waters with.

Actually the "unnamed remixer" in the intro is called Own eye. Also the same remixer that is unnamed at the very end of the video. Sad story behind that name, i remember that :c Essentially he got so scared of copyright related things he just deleted himself from the internet. Or rather, created a second channel and now he only posts originals, but he still exists under a new name. He is now called "Skarblown District" I'd attribute the remix to his original name, as he likely doesn't want the association with those old remixes anymore.
@AcousticHarmonia
@AcousticHarmonia 4 года назад
That's not actually the name, at least not the most recent name that content was listed under, though I think that has been one used to refer to them, maybe the original channel. I leave their actual name uncredited, as they deleted all their content out of fear of copyright strikes. They were strictly against reuploading their content, but I did regardless because of how incredible their work is, but leave them as "Unnamed Remixer" as respect toward their wishes not to be linked to their work. Some people have reuploaded their original videos, with full credit to the original creator, which I think is wrong considering they didn't want to be linked to their work anymore. I actually briefly thought about deleting that comment just because I don't like that work being linked to the person who specifically wanted not to be linked to it, not even for it to be reuploaded, but decided not to because of how many have reuploaded it with full credit anyway. cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/562408408490442753/671730620673818624/Untitled.png

I am aware during PMD1 there are some times the screen fades to black and you can see a faint line on a side, but after working on this every chance I got since the announcement of this game, quite frankly I'm tired... Anyway, this is my first shot at discussing something I'm this passionate about, so I'd genuinely like to know how it was received! Thank you for watching, this series is very important to me, so I appreciate you taking the time to hear what I have to say! Edit: PSMD was 2016, not 2015. I got confused with the Europe release date, sorry I better edit this in; I have been absolutely blown away by the reception this video has received. I created this because I wanted to express how I felt about these games to a level of depth that I never have the chance to while I'm streaming or just chatting with somebody. The fact that the passion that I expressed was able to draw that same passion out of so many of you all has been an absolute honor! It's incredible to be able to scroll through the comments, and read passage after passage of people reminiscing about their own personal experiences with PMD, how much they love the games, how it's managed to make a positive impact on their lives, or even just how much this video was able to draw out of them. Every comment like that, I want to be able to address and properly respond to as many as I can, as you can see though there's a LOT, so I apologize if I don't get to yours if it gets lost somewhere within the mix. This has been an incredibly wholesome response as a whole when it comes to the comments here, and it's been fascinating to see just how much PMD has had an affect on everybody taking the time to write those. When I think of some of the coolest things ever associated with this channel, honestly, I'll think of the comments section to this video.

Coming from someone who has had a hard copy of every single Mystery Dungeon game; Starting from Red Rescue Team all the way up to Super Mystery Dungeon; And even having a hard copy of both Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky; Seeing the Mystery Dungeon series come back after so long is such a sight to see. These games tell a story that can rival some of the greatest novels out there. It engages you to keep playing. Pressing on through each challenge to find out what happens next. To overcome the odds of staring down legendaries in battle just to progress that much further away from adversity. To show the complex issues of morality being much more than black and white pick a side type of thing. To show that there is real emotion behind the actions one person can make that can influence another in that complex morality tree. Going back to where it all began can bring both veterans like myself back into the action and at the same time expose a new generation to the unique gameplay and emphasis on storytelling to perhaps bring the series back to new heights.

I can hear from your words that you're really passionate about this series, just like me. I think, however, that if Rescue Team DX will sell enough they'll go first with a "PMD5", instead of straight to a Explorers remake (which can still happen after PMD5). I mean, 2 remakes in a row? Uhm... Also... 2020: Rescue Team DX (15th anniversary of RT in Japan) 2023/2024: PMD5 2027: Explorers remake (20th anniversary of Explorers of Time/Darkness in Japan) I just really, REALLY hope that this remake will sell well. Name sounds partially familiar, haha Yeah, I couldn't believe that this game got announced. I was walking into for first Uni class of the day and went over Serebii to see what was covered in the direct, saw "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Rescue Team DX" was announced, and began looking up details on it in the middle of the lecture... I feel like there's a decent chance of a PMD2 remake, or just something original. If the main series got Gen 4 remakes maybe it would pair well with that. I don't know which I'd be more thrilled to see, a PMD2 remake, or a PMD5, probably the remake honestly, because of how much that impacted me. I definitely wouldn't mind a timeline like that, and really hope it sells well as well. Should probably get my preorder in already. I mean it's not even excellently improved as a remake at all either with the 14 years and console difference, plus those models now are so repetitive regardless. Gates to infinity shouldn't have sold much and they still made Super... I don't think at all they'll dump this series if a remake of the first fails, and I hope they'll not do other remakes anyway, MD doesn't need it. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon is a game that I experienced when I came out for my birthday, having been told about it by the anime special of all things. While the original is clunky and even as a kid I hated the brutal nature of it, the story kept me going, and it pretty much is the reason I know that games can be more than something quick and to the point like Mario or Sonic. So to see that a remake of that game that is probably the most important game I've ever played to my development as a person, gives me joy I cannot even express in words well enough. Though let me say my joy is enough to have made me buy a Switch outright after it's release after at first waiting for it to get cheaper or for a pro model, and to buy it both digitally and physically before release. I want this to succeed, and I'm going to do my part to make it happen.

That's a really neat way to get into it there! For me I remember I received PMD1 as my first game on my first handheld console ever, the DS. @@AcousticHarmonia Pretty sure the epilogue to the main plot should count as part of it. Darkrai does bring the game closer to perfection though, because it explains the biggest plot hole that was bothersome after the credits. Why was Temporal Tower crumbling in the first place? I'm pretty sure Dialga's presence made it impossible to degrade from age. Also, while I respect moral complexity, even in real life there genuinely are some people who are truly just evil. Not everything is black and white, but some things are. Some people just want power without a care for how their selfishness affects others. It was a valuable lesson to learn as a child. I respect the game for having the balls to teach it while still advocating for that usually not being the case with most people. Too many people believe these days that true evil doesn't exist. And that's a very dangerous belief to hold onto.

It's incredible how much the music is able to draw such emotions out, definitely one of the most emotional soundtracks out there The most beautiful covers of those themes I'd argue are from a certain creator who I won't name, as they deleted the content of their channel, and didn't want to be linked to their work anymore out of fear of copyright strikes. I reuploaded their content a while back, and I believe internet video archive did as well, except they uploaded the original videos with full credit to the creator who didn't want to be linked to their work... Their covers of Through The Sea Of Time and Don't Ever Forget are some of the few remixes I'd genuinely call masterpieces. I used part of the former for a little while in this video, didn't with the latter. Would highly recommend this incredible music, but warn it's really emotional ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zQ25_ZJCJVg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jCY0Ov7lu4A.html

Man, the music is such a nostalgia trip. I love Rescue team and Explorers so freaking much. Explorers of Time has a special place in my heart from my childhood. I spent hours upon hours in this game and absolutely explored as much as I could. I remember the final moments where I unlocked Palkia and Dialga - the final legendaries I needed to unlock - and loved the satisfaction of tearing through the dungeons I spent so long in traversing. I hope with all my heart that mystery dungeons gets a renewed love so that another generation of kids enjoys these wonderful set of games.

There's so many dungeons to explore... After my first playthrough of doing all that I could, from then on I only played through the main plot, annually at that. Legendaries like Dialga and Palkia sure made it an interesting time exploring around though. That'd be really awesome if it'd be able to achieve that! I may have to introduce this game to my cousins kids, try to convert them into PMD nerds like me, haha

I only mention the legendaries to indicate the dedication that fans have to exploring this game. I'm the type to do 1 utterly complete play through. After finishing the story and everything it had to offer, I had a well of satisfaction in me, and was content in my experience of it for years. So yeah, we'll see how it goes.

THANK YOU for defending Super's story beginning. Certain story beats wouldn't have nearly the same impact if the beginning was shorter, but anytime I try to explain that, people seem to think I'm making it up, or that it's not as important as I make it out to be. Anyways, I'm really glad they chose Rescue Team to remake. PMD1, while having a good story, music, characters, etc. kinda has issues with it's core gameplay and postgame. A remake is a great way to fix those problems. We don't know if they're changing the postgame or not, but since the remake seems to be built off of Super's base, the gameplay already seems to be much improved. I really love it's new artstyle too. I love how they made the game look like the promotional artwork the series has had since the start. I can't wait to play the full game in March, and I'm glad this series is back.
@AcousticHarmonia
@AcousticHarmonia 4 года назад
Too many people judged Super way too harshly just because of the "slow start", but as you say, it has impacts on the plot later. It develops a bond that becomes genuinely believable, unlike previous cases where it's more like "please believe us these two are close". To be fair, PMD2 did a pretty good job with its partner, not as much as Super, I don't really recall Gates, and PMD1 I feel the partner could have been done much better, that one felt a bit forced to me. And yeah, PMD1 does seem like a good remaking option, ignoring the notes about its potential relevancy that is. It was the starting point for the series, and is already an incredible experience on its own. It would be nice if they fixed stuff with the postgame (like imagine if the starter evolutions get their own portrait arts like how Super got some, I'd love that). The artstyle is really cool, I just worry some people may look at it and decide it's just some strange looking remake of some niche game. Now it's just to wait until March!

@@AcousticHarmonia IMO Super would've been way better received if the text speed was just a little bit faster (or if they let you mash A to skip text boxes.) I really enjoyed my first playthrough, but consecutive playthroughs kind of became a slog because *god dammit I just want to get to the good bits.* Being able to mash A to get through tutorial segments would've helped out a lot. This is kind of true for all the PMD games, but SMD in particular added a lot of new features and thus has more tutorials than usual.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon was my childhood. It helped shape me into who I am: a friendly person who will always try to do the right thing and help people if I am able. As a kid in the Austism spectrum (Auspbergs, specifically) it really helped me understand emotions better. Though I still struggle with watching my mouth today, PMD helped me learn what empathy was at a young age, something I may have struggled to understand otherwise. While empathy isn't super difficult for someone on the spectrum to feel (Studies show autistic people are MORE empathetic than average, mostly due to working harder to understand other people's emotions), it can be hard to understand exactly what empathy is and *especially* why. PMD showed me the why. It gave me a boost to my social skills, and though I may still lack in quite a few areas, I would be much worse off without them. PMD was a gateway to a large community of people who all feel the same way, and I learned from the game that I wasn't alone when I cried, and that it was a good thing to cry.

But unfortunately, I understand that this game isn’t for everyone, and with many major RU-vidrs having never played this game and the generals opinion that I have seen being kind of negative, mostly due to its high price. I can’t say I am too hopeful. I hate to say it, I have been asking for Sky on switch forever. But I can’t blame people who don’t want to buy it, after the sword and shield controversy, combined with the high price tag, a game that will seem short for today’s standard unless they are adding new content... well, I’m buying it and hoping for Sky remake, but I fear those of us with nostalgia won’t be enough.

I am a day one pokemon mystery dungeon player and this game has made my childhood what I remember it to be if I look back, even tho I followed the main series after pmd rescue teams I have replayed it several times on emulators since then and even rebought the game for my old DS. I cannot put in words how much I am in love with the quality of life remake of a game that already is my favourite one of all time. And even tho pmd2 was great, I have to admit that I personally never got connected to the songs and story as much as I was in pmd1. Maybe it has been the guild theme that took the theme from me or the story itself, I just didn't feel the same hopelessness as I did in pmd1 where I was an outcast side by side with my best friend who was ready to devote his life to mine and help me save the world. There is by far no game that made me shed that many tears and I am crying every time I listen to the OST of that game. The series caught me with Red rescue team when I found it among my moms games she had in container of games she forgot about so I grabbed it and played on it. I think it was the very year it came out not that I actually remember how old I was at the time but still pretty young. I played as a Mudkip which I as of this day any new mystery dungeon I always played my very first run as a Mudkip as a sort of tradition of sorts. (I was mad when gates didn't have Mudkip. It broke my tradition. ) The ending made me cry only because I thought it was one of those games where there is nothing after the credits and when you load up the save file it brings you back to the final dungeon. Then when I was 10 I got explorers of sky and played the heck out of it and the ending once again made me cry. I replayed red and sky so many times because I loved the story, I still am replaying sky actually. Still enjoyed gates to infinity but hated that final boss fight, and alas the ending still made me cry. I tried to play new mystery but it was too hard for me when it came out so I got rid of it. But I think I am going to rebuy it all these years later at 21 years old and beat it for once before I buy this remake. Because I enjoy all of them.

After all, I was skeptical of Rescue Team DX when it was announced, and yet, that remake ultimately surprised me with just how much quality, care and effort was put into it. (Seriously, where was that effort with Sword & Shield, GameFreak?!) It made me question myself; was I wrong to view Super Mystery Dungeon so negatively back when it launched? Was I just so biased in favour of Explorers Of Sky that I refused to accept anything else? Am I just so desperate for a potential Explorers remake that I'll kiss whatever butt I have to in order to (hopefully) make it happen?! The answer to all of those questions is... yes.

AcoustucHarmonia I think the original intention of Gates was to focus a lot more on characters rather than story. Due to the time limitations of a game's development cycle, it's very difficult to write a good story for a video game *with* well-developed characters, so a lot of plot-heavy games focus primarily on one or the other. Another good example of a series with a large "characters VS story" division (albeit to a much more extreme degree) is Fire Emblem, of all things--the early games in the franchise, especially the fourth game, are notable for having really good stories, but relatively little character development. (The NES games get away with this because they're NES games, limited cartridge space, blah blah blah, but the SNES games don't have this excuse--rather, most of the characters have little development because the overarching plot is more important.) Even the main characters have very little...character, and (with the exception of Sigurd and maybe Leif) are essentially just kind of there to make the plot move along and use the magical sword to kill the dragon at the end. The post-FE6 games improve character development a little bit via supports, but it wasn't until the ninth game that we got a truly character-centric Fire Emblem game. Not only did they give us an actually interesting protagonist in Ike (who the game kind-of-sort-of implies to have Asperger's/ high-functioning autism, among the myriad other points of *actual protagonist development.*), but also individualized every single character, not just in supports but also via the use of dynamic dialogue (essentially, depending on who lives and dies, the game's in-story dialogue is completely altered. Some of the "X died" dialogue is totally heartbreaking.) so that you care about every single person in the game. (Except Makalov. Fuck Makalov, that prick can go die in a hole.) Your units were no longer just bundles of stats, but actual people who you gave a shit about. Aaaaand it worked. I shamelessly soft-resetted for hours in order to keep everyone alive. Even Makalov, if only so I could watch Marcia chew him out. Unfortunately, the amount of time and money spent writing all those characters led to the game having a pretty basic, albeit well-written plot (slightly better than FE1's) and very poor graphics. In spite of this, though, it's considered one of the best games in the series by a lot of FE fans (and is a fan-favorite among GameCube collectors both due to this and it's rarity) who play it purely because of its characters. (Even IGN couldn't taint its legacy with a shitty review--it has an 8.7/10 on their site, despite them being notorious for review-bombing pretty much any game with a semblance of difficulty around that time.) Gates...*tried* to pull off something similar. Unfortunately, it did a pretty shoddy job of it--the characters are only marginally better than those in Sky (Gates's case is not helped by Sky's Special Episodes, which gave much-needed development from the characters we already knew from the main story.), and there aren't that many non-primary characters with much development worth mentioning. Additionally, you know how I said FE9's plot was simple? Yeah...that was *by Fire Emblem standards.* Things get pretty crazy in that series. 9's still got a decent amount of complexity to it, and almost everything in the plot makes sense (barring a few loose ends that were meant to lead into FE10, but ultimately cut.). It's also fairly well-written, with quite a bit of world-building. It also had an entire sequel to finish telling us whatever FE9 didn't have the runtime to explain. The same cannot be said for the plot of GTI. GTI really loves to pull things out of its ass, use them once or twice, and then never mention it again. Frisms, for instance, were an interesting idea. A way of recording one's own voice so it can be heard again just once? Cool! What will they do with that? Keldeo uses it exactly once to send a message. That's basically all they do. The partner's backstory? They've always been alone, but wished for friends...I wonder what sort of upbringing they had and what their backstory is! Oh wait, it's never mentioned again. Man, these Entercards sure do seem cool. I wonder who invented than, and what their history is! ...It's never really explained. Man, this Kyurem guy sure does hate the world. I wonder what caused him to feel that way...Never explained. How exactly did Munna and company eliminate all the other humans? You guessed it--it's never really explained. GTI tries to be a character-focused story, but because of the limitations of its formula it ends up being a game with an excuse plot and a handful of decently-written characters who aren't strong enough to carry the whole game on their own. PMD just isn't made to be especially character-driven, as GTI proves. That's not to say it can't have good characters (see PMD2, which has...pretty much the entire frickin', guild in Sky), but it shouldn't be made the selling point of the game. PMD is built around the idea of "story first, characters second," and given the nature of Pokemon (namely, the absurd roster size) it's simply not feasible to give *every 'mon* a well-written character. The only reason Sky's characters were so good was because the groundwork was already set by Time and Darkness, and all that really had to be done was the postgame and Special Episodes. In essence: Gates flopped because it sacrificed everything for characters without thinking about what PMD is actually about.

I have a love-hate relationship with gates. It's probably still pretty good as a game, just not in comparison to the other PMD games. The story is kinda eh to me, but not straight up bad eh, but the kind where you can tell they genuinely tried, but didn't quite hit their mark. Music is just as incredible as always, but I only really realized that within the last few years. Super though I absolutely fell in love with, to the point that I was debating in my head for close to a year whether I liked Super or Sky better, and eventually settled on Sky has better story, not by a lot though, Sky developing more characters and a greater world, Super developing a better partner and relationship, and Super has way better music, because every dungeon theme is a jammer

I played the story in super and then lost motivation after that even though I know there's a lot of post-game content in it. In gates, I stumbled across the "Gilded Hall Inner Chamber" (Tyrian Maze Inner Chamber) and that was the best most exciting dungeon, when I didn't even know it had legendaries there.

I was a Pikachu in Sky (with the name of Liz), my partner was a male Piplup named Shaun and our team was 'Team Light'. Greatest adventure I ever experienced. And yes, the music ALWAYS makes me cry. 😭💔 The first time I played through "the future' part, I was genuinely scared as a player. I was sick to my stomach because it was so depressing. I really wanted out and wanted to find a way to turn things around. Then later when your character HAD to disappear?! Darn it! Cue the water works! 😭😭😭💔And then the amount of twists that followed in PART 2 of the game! Oh my gosh! 😱😭 I got to tell you: it partly shaped my future career. You know what I am now? @@AcousticHarmonia fantasy. I write fantasy style in a contemporary setting. The series I wrote is called "Angel's Blade" (which can be found on Amazon). It is a about a half-angel named Liz Azzimagica. She lost her parents in a fire at age two, was saved by Michael the Archangel, was taken in by her loving uncle and at age 14, discovered she had wings grow in. She then gained a sword that same night: a marble patterned sword that allowed her to control the elements. In her case: water and wind. Liz's friend Lux, a half-angel himself, helped her learn to control and use these powers. And by age 17, she decided to become a hero. The rest of the plot entails how she fights who she perceives as the big threat. But much like our beloved PMD, there is always a twist. Want to know more? 17 minutes in and I cried four times in a row. 😭👌 But I have to disagree with Gates to Infinity. The mainline story is the second best, right after explorers, IMO. Gates has bigger story-events than Rescue Team and because of its controversy, it's more unique than PSMD. As you said, PSMD has the same structure as Explorers, only in another story. That's why PSMD is the worst of them all story-wise. Yeah, the OST is great and the plot-twist isn't that bad, but the game is based on coping old structures and nostalgia, which makes not only PSMD itself less unique, but also explorers, because they're comparable. Also PSMD's main-story ending is the only one, where I didn't get emotional at all, because the fact that the partner is Mew, wasn't only predictable, but way too farfetched. What wasn't predictable is the announcement of Rescue Team DX. Red Rescue Team was the last Pokémon game I've played, before I took a break from Pokémon in general in 2006/2007. I think that's why Gen3 overall is my favorite Generation. However, because of hard times and depressions in 2012, I found my old DS and played it again. Then I found out that there's another PMD, including new Pokémon from Gen4, which was Explorers of Sky. I bought it on Amazon and it was literally the first unknown Pokémon-game I've played since the break I had and my mind and feelings were blown away by its story. Also, the way PMD2 introduced the newer Gen4 Pokémon to me was more charming than the mainline series could ever do. If I would have played Diamond/Perl at first, instead of PMD2, I would care less about the Gen4 Pokémon, because in PMD, they're not only Pokémon with types, abilities and moves, they were personalities with emotions and background-stories. I can't wait for PMD RT DX and I can imagine that there could be new never told stories for some characters in the post-game. But I don't get my hopes too high. Even if it's just the remade PMD1, I'm still glad that they don't give up on PMD that easily. ❤️ Thank you so much for making this video. 😊

My opinions on Gates can't be super valid, because when I consider it unmemorable, I actually genuinely don't remember it. I really didn't like it at all when I first played it on release. But the last few years I've been listening back to the soundtrack, and it really got me thinking "wow, this soundtrack is still the PMD level of quality. Maybe I should have payed more attention". It was like a year ago ish I read a synopsis of the plot to refresh my memory, vaguely remembered some. I still prefer the stories of the other PMD games, and have several problems with Gates, but I can tell they really tried with the story, that there was still plenty of heart and soul poured into it, and that they wanted to try something different, which is commendable. I was planning on doing a playthrough series of all PMD games in order, including Gates so I can actually look at it in this new way I view it rather than my first impressions from years ago. But this remake messes with those plans for what kind of series that'd be, haha. But one day I do want to replay Gates, actually viewing it with respect. Thank you for sharing your opinions, and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

@@AcousticHarmonia Thank you again for answering, I would've never expect it that quickly. And I'm looking forward to your playthrough series. 😊 What makes Gates even more important to me is the fact, that I can identify myself with characters like Gurdurr and Virizion at the beginning, since I've lost my trust in the world, during a bigger depression. This game literally gave me back my hopes to live again. I guess this is what Gates makes so special for me. And I was surprised how they put the actual situation of the real human world into the game. Also, the plot-twist with Munna was the most unexpected and the moment Kyurem literally killed Hydreigon in a cut-scene, is the most shocking thing I've seen in a Pokémon game. 👌

@@Gagafreak92 It sure sounds like it was able to have a deep personal impact then. Mystery Dungeon is honestly the series that I see as most able to do that, to be able to help people and make them feel better off, so hearing a very drastic example like that is really inspiring. The plot had some really unique ideas going for it, with the human world reminding me of 4th wall breaking story integration similar to Undertale or Bravely Default/Second. I remember being a bit shooketh about some of the twists of the plot, but honestly don't remember a whole lot else. But I do look forward to when the day comes around I can hop into it with a fresh perspective.

@@lilybelden9405 Gates was also my very first game on my first 3DS as birthday present from my parents. The 3DS itself even reminds me a bit of Kyurem, design-wise. I'd say Gates, Rescue Team and Explorers aren't comparable to each other, Rescue Team was the very first, to try out new mechanics and story-elements that never happened that way in a Pokémon game before, Explorers has the theme of sacrifice and Gates has the theme of hope. They're all individually beautiful in their own way. Super on the other hand seemed to be only a fan-service to get more people excited. Unlike Explorers and Gates, the character-development is an empty gap in Super.
@Cdv3_
@Cdv3_ 4 года назад
My personal rankings of the games 4: Super. I do agree with most of your points on why this arguably saved the series, but for me personally, Serene Village went on way too long and the choice to completely abandon most of the characters from there was just odd (after the midway point, Goomy, Pancham, Shelmet, and Deerling get maybe 10 more lines for the rest of the game, including the postgame). If they cut out a little bit of the end of Serene Village, or somehow found a way to make most of the characters not be thrown away halfway through then it would probably be in the top 2 for me lol. Also the second half is way too fast paced once the main story really starts. After a certain Revelation, the rest of the story is blink and you’ll miss it. I’ve always wanted to like this game (it’s even where my profile picture comes from), but after 3 playthroughs, I just simply can’t see what everyone else does in this game. Still, I will say this is by no means a bad game, just one that I personally have too many problems with to truly enjoy. 3: Rescue Team. This is a great starting point for the series, but compared to the later games, it isn’t quite as good, and hasn’t aged that well (any yellow Pokémon looks terrible). The remake looks like it could solve most of these problems though, and depending on how good the remixed songs are, could put the remake at #2. 2: Gates. This is a love-it or hate-it game. You either love the story or hate it. Based on its placement you can guess where I fall under it. For me moments like the major plot twist and arguably the most shocking moment in the whole franchise (that spoilery ice beam scene with Kyurem absolutely left me stunned) just worked for me. Also the soundtrack is flat out perfect. Also Munna might be my single favorite character in the series. 1: Explorers. Duh. There isn’t really anything I can add that hasn’t been said before. This is the perfect PMD game. Amazing video by the way!

Valid points about Super's characters and fast paced story after the twist, to the point that it can be pretty difficult to follow what's even happening a lot of the time. It stood out the most for me though through its portrayal of the partner, which was really incredibly done. Rescue team definitely had its fair share of problems, my biggest one being the relationship between the player and the partner felt kinda forced. "I just met you, have this house, we're besties now". But it did help lay the foundations for the standards of the series going forward, so it's a great way to start the series, both from a developing perspective and a player experience perspective. My biggest problem with Gates was I found the story largely unmemorable, I say that because I actually don't remember most of it, and sometime last year looked up a synopsis and was like "oh yeah, that's what happened. Sounds kinda familiar...?". I had a pretty negative opinion of it for a long time, but over the past couple years I've been listening back to the soundtrack, and have really thought "how did I not pay this much attention to the music before...? This is genuinely masterful". Like I said, I don't remember a lot of Gates, so I look forward to the day when I get the chance to hop back into it with a fresh perspective. PMD2 was an incredible experience. I dunno if I'd call it perfect, but it's pretty darn close. Like I really enjoyed the initial main storyline of it, because it told a story with no truly evil characters, nobody is beyond redemption, and everyone has believable motivations behind their actions, it was spectacular. The postgame plot though I had some problems with, mostly Darkrai. Because up to this point there were no characters evil for the sake of being evil, whereas he was like "aha! I wanted a world of darkness! Isn't that spicy?!" His fate at the end of it was very well done though, pretty poetic in a way. But I think the thing that holds it back from being perfect in my eyes is Darkrai is just evil because they needed somebody evil for the plot. To be fair, it's still honestly my favorite game just in general

AcousticHarmonia Kinda spoilers ahead for anyone reading this comment chain for some reason. Super, for me is a game that I’ve always wanted to like, but haven’t really been able to. I will say that the partner is by far the best out of all four games, and I’ve always been a huge fan of pretty much everything after the Yvetal fight (which itself is just an incredibly annoying boss) up until Dark Matter is defeated. I even love the concept of the ending, and see it as an amazing idea for a twist ending, but i still don’t really understand why it played out as it did (although it could be intentional, since I’m sure the other partners also thought that the player’s reasons for having to leave didn’t make sense either). Also I hate how underused most of the Serene Village characters other than Nuzleaf and Espurr are after the midway point, since they’re barely seen again until the postgame, where they flat out aren’t characters anymore. I honestly would’ve loved the idea of that part of the game if it were either a little shorter, or if the characters weren’t thrown away so quickly.

Regular B Spoilers for GTI ahead I love Gates mainly for it’s story and soundtrack. I’d actually argue that the story is almost as good as Explorers (the stories would absolutely be equally as good if Special Episode 5 didn’t exist). It also had some incredibly shocking, yet well done moments. The two big examples are Munna’s betrayal, which I’d say is the best betrayal in the series, as well as Hydreigon being shattered by Kyurem. That moment left me absolutely stunned the first time I saw it, and I’m still surprised it’s in an official Pokemon game. Also, the soundtrack is absolutely incredible, having my favorite piece of music in any game (One Last Look at Paradise), as well as a ton of really strong songs. For me, GTI’s top 10 songs rank among the strongest in the series, and has very few duds compared to other games. (RT/RTDX has Tiny Woods and most of the Friend Area music. Explorers has the awful remix of Defy the Legends and Aegis Cave. Super has a lot of just boring cutscene music. Gates doesn’t have any major duds.) I’ll admit that the gameplay was bad, with way too many corridors and way too few starters (who range from obscenely overpowered like Axew to fairly weak like Snivy) but it had a ton of ideas that were expanded on for Super and RTDX. The main one that comes to mind is the upgradable moves, which is a cool concept that was held back by being a part of Gates’s gameplay. Overall Gates has problems, and it’s not for everyone, even moreso than other PMD games, but it’s one that I love.

@@Cdv3_ yeah the major flaw of it was the Gameplay. Could be actually a Pokemon game that actually could base the character outside the screen IE you. (4th wall). Not only that out of all the partner in the series gates literally care about the MC so much that he/She stood up in front of Kyrem while almost getting stomped to death and willingly give you up because they knew you had another life in the human world. Explorers is a pass here because there's literally nothing to return to. Rescue team you'll eventually go back due from the quote 'I want to stay longer..' and super straight up did the opposite of the 3.

Also, I agree, the next one they make would probably be Time/Darkness/Sky! For Gates to Infinity, you also couldn't choose a gender for neither you or your partner. Your gender being a bit more ambiguous, while your partner was always male. The choice was taken away as to what kind of team you wanted, other than that I liked it! Also, SPMD might've been the end for what we currently know as PMD. That doesn't mean something new can't start! The franchise can be reborn! With PMD 1 and 2 being tests before new stuff is brought in! It gives Spike Chunsoft more time to flesh things out for a brand new game!

I've wanted to do a complete series on PMD on the channel, PMD1-4, giving Gates a new proper chance, but now this release messes with those plans, especially if a PMD2 remake is coming, can't get ahead of myself, haha PMD1DX honestly feels like a breath of fresh air and trying to start the series anew in a way, while recapturing what made the past titles so good. From what I played of the demo (twice lul), it feels like the features and content updates you'd expect of a PMD5, except it's a remake. Ahhh the memories... pmd red rescue and explorers of sky brings back sooo much nostalgia.. the story, the gameplay, surprise monster houses, the music, the art... my god these games had it all. Every once in a while I think about Pmd and Pikmin and wonder why these games never get talked about. Literally hidden gems. Even my friends who played pmd once said the game left an emotional mark in them. I hope the remake reignites the flame to keep the series going ☺️❤️❤️

You did an incredible job on this video, it made me emotional all over again just watching it and definitely earned my sub. Pmd2 was the first game I played on my ds and my first pokemon game as well. I love every game in the series to death and really hope it receives the success and recognition it deserves to help it live on and thrive for years to come. Also I loved the Xenoblade parallel you drew to the dimensional scream (Xenoblade is my favorite game of all time with pmd2 as a close 2nd), I'm guessing you must be as hyped as I am to have 2 of the greatest games ever remastered in 2020!

Honestly I'm thinking I may have to have a "battle" of sorts for remake of the year between PMD1DX and Xenoblade Definitive Edition (I know the FF7 remake is coming out, but I don't have a PS4 to play it on lul) So maybe that'll wind up having to be a future video project, because I honestly don't know which one I'm hyped more for, so it'll be interesting to see how each of them stands out from their originals, with PMD1DX seemingly adding a buncha new stuff, and Xenoblade bringing back cut content, can't wait 👀

You talked a lot about your personal emotional aspects of the series; mainly the story and music. That's what most do. I wish you had spent a little more time talking about the gameplay and the decline of such in subsequent entries. How PMD1 had Friendareas and let you play as any Pokemon even in Town after the Story. The incredibly complex postgame structure would be another point. And how much freedom you had as a player to break the game with powerful abilities that would not return after PMD2, because it's considered too complex or unbalanced nowadays. Not to mention the 99 floor Dungeons and integration of every single legedary to date in a unique way. PMD2 added a Player character driven postgame and sky the episodes. But it lost friend areas and the ability to play as any Pokemon you want in Town. Legendaries were just scattered on random dungeons as long as you had an obsucre item in your inventory. Gates and Super got rid of the standard attack and focused on the usual attacks with limited PP. As a subsequent measure, dungeons got a lot smaller, exploring was toned down and combat was the new focus. You did hit harder but so did the enemy, and thus 1-Hit-Ko's became the norm. That's why the games ended up with you using waaay more revive seeds than in previous games (also the reason they added mini-reviver seeds). Also the camera was way too close to make anything out in a dungeon. And Super had every Pokemon in it yes, but for one made it impossible to have multiple Pokemon of the same species, and also didn't let you Nickname them anymore. And the biggest sin might be that they put a cooldown on a lot of Pokémon so you couldn't use them anytime you want, even post-game. Now Imagine your favourite Pokemon isn't a Starter. That's why the remake of PMD1 is so important to me. I'm incredibly excited to see PMD continue, but also incredibly afraid that they fuck it up with the problems they introduced in the recent games. From the Demo I can tell that they got rid of the standard attack again and that IQ got replaced with other system. I'm really not a fan of this, but they did introduce something to counteract the single biggest flaw of PMD1&2, that leveling was a teadious task. Now the Makhuita Dojo seems to take care of this with the new Tickets.

That's definitely an interesting take on it. I typically don't focus on the gameplay a whole lot when it comes to PMD games, with them in my view existing almost completely for the story and music. The gameplay never especially hooked me in, and I'm usually playing through PMD games just to experience the story and music again, haha And I actually had no idea that Super still made Pokemon unavailable from time to time during the postgame, because I saw how many missions there were in postgame and were like "nope, not happening"

While I agree with you on Blue's postgame and its very powerful integration of legendaries inside dungeons with character and personality (which is one of the reasons Blue is still the best game for me to date), I can't let you say that Super's gameplay is inferior or dumb man! Actually Super's is a huge improvement. It is the mystery dungeon game that is the most faithful to it's origins: Shiren the Wanderer, the first mystery dungeon. This is where wands and insane difficulty come from, where actually dying was part of the gameplay, as you unlocked new parts of the story by dying. Gameplay in Super is entirely focused on items. They got rid of the A Attack to force you to use moves, not only because they level up the more you use them but also to make you think about how to properly carry and use elixirs (or I don't know if you rather call them ether in English? I play in French). Same for hunger. And same for wands: ennemies do great damage and have large amounts of HP to force you to rely on HP increasing Oran Berries and possibilities offered by wands; you are rarely supposed to spam ennemies with moves and rely on reviver seeds, else you'll better have a bag full of reviver seeds; you have to use your items strategically! Also in Super they did a ton of not-immediately-noticeable additions that really made me think that they put a particular attention to this game: sometimes you'll see ennemies stay in a room to attack you from a distance the moment you step inside: you can only counter this by using a wand that makes you warp etc; sometimes ennemies form little teams that always stay together to submerge you with powerful moves at sight, I even noticed what looked like a mom and her child, something like a Rhydon that stayed with a Rhyhorn. You may even have noticed a herd of Ledyba, 4 ones sleeping on a square next to each other! All those tiny additions among others really showed to me that they tried hard to make meaningful and challenging dungeons. I agree with you on the zoomed in camera, but I don't hate it completely: I think Gates has one of the best dungeon designs among all games, and that's in part thanks to the zoom, associated with the very nice assets that are scattered in halls and rooms. I never though I would see animated WATERFALLS right inside of a dungeon (and I'm not referring to the anecdotal outside parts of some dungeons, this is the real layout of the dungeon across floors), along with crevices, tree stumps, fallen leaves everywhere... Too bad they partially reverted to more traditional square rooms for most of Super and that we only can see such complex layouts in an handful of dungeons: Path of Fallen Leaves for example, my favorite :D, a 40ish floors long one, and actually many postgame ones are above 20F long, I don't think that overall dungeons are smaller. But you are right, I miss multiple exciting 99F dungeons like Silver Trench or Western Cave. Actually what was undoubtedly better about dungeons, and what I miss the most in Blue and Sky, is how dungeons used to change as we climbed them. I loved how Magma Cavern was looking more and more dangerous the deeper we went in, with new Pokemon that weren't on the previous stairs whereas in Super and Gates the layout never change inside of a dungeon (apart from Destiny Tower). It really gave a sense of progression and personality to a dungeon; and Magma Cavern is a radical example! In simpler ones we could see patch of water start to appear from some floors, changes in tiles, in layout, in music, in... WEATHER! What did they do to weather? It barely changes in Super and Gates, when it is not ability induced. I am so sad they got rid of Snowy and Foggy weathers, and they won't return in DX it seems. But what gets me very excited is that Mt Blaze or Mt Thunder Peaks have different music, meaning that they'll HAVE to include the save point/separation between peaks and bottoms. They also seem to really care about staying faithful to the original design-wise (they reproduced many tiny details of Blue/Red and the glimpse of layouts I could see thanks to the dojo are promising): so I am hopeful they will bring back the dungeons changing as we climb! Can't wait for March ;)

there's a profound joy in playing a DS game and not a 3DS one. for sure if you get your hands on it you should give it a go! your perspective and whole energy feels pretty wholesome, especially if you're making half an hour long videos, or more a love letter to a game that your child self is so happy to play. I firmly believe video games can be incredibly therapeutic and grounding, even healing. PMD was that game for me. so you keep being you, keep that fire going. if not for you in the future and for you now, for your twelve year old self, you know? I appreciate you

The reusage of tunes or measures is called a Leitmotif. It's actually a pretty smart thing to do in games such as these, because a subtle use of leitmotif can key you into certain moods, or remind you of situations the leitmotif was played for, or compare and contrast others. For example, one of the most used in PMD2 (Explorers), the Time theme, is first present in the Time Gear song (also known as Lights over Fogbound Lake), but is also present in Through the Sea of Time, and comes to a head in Temporal Tower and Dialga's Fight to the Finish. In those instances, the reusage of that leitmotif is used in TT and DFttF to signify two things: what the main focus is (fighting to stop time from ceasing), and to remind you of WHY you fight (the beautiful sights at the top of the lake, the flight over the sea - both things done with your Partner). The PMD series is full of leitmotifs, showing the love and attention that went into the audio. It's very good at evoking memories because it makes these simple tunes a core part of the situations going into them and situations moving forward with associations.
