Thank you for sharing this information. I had an infection and went into Prednisone for a couple of days and immediately starting having symptoms like swelling, extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pains, sweating, lack of concentration and increase of appetite. My doctor said that I could stop Prednisone after 4 days and it has been 3 days without it and I still have extreme fatigue, muscle pain and big appetite. I didn’t know I had to taper off from this medicine and I didn’t know all the side effects, I’m kind of surprised my doctor didn’t mentioned it or comment something about my symptoms. I feel better now that I know that my symptoms weren’t just something imagined and they have to be taken seriously. Thank you again Dr. Megan for sharing this information ❤

Thank you for all that you do! I have to take Prednisolone (compounded) for my nickel allergy for allergic reactions (nickel causes my body facial, throat swelling and drop in my BP and chest tightening). I sometimes have to take the Prednisolone for my Asthma. I don't like the side effects at all, but thank goodness it really does saves lives. It makes me moody and causes anxiety and depression (which i don't have otherwise) whenever I've had to take it. Because of this, I have to taper down slowly and I have had low bp before and fatigue from tapering too quickly. There are a lot of people who don't understand and I wish more health professionals would realize, even though it can wreck your body, the cost of not tapering slowly can be much worse. Thank you for posting this video and for your dedication to helping people who need to be understood.

Hello Doc! Excellent advise and tips. I visited my Endocrinologist today and she has reduced my dose from 20 mg daily to 20 mg QOD and 10mg QOD. I am taking Prednisone for severe arthritis. If you have time, I would appreciate your thoughts.

I want off of Prednisone so bad! I just had surgery and have Lupus and can’t sleep. On a reg day I take cbd/thc for sleep and High Blood pressure issues. It does help but I can’t take it while on prescriptions from the surgery. I still feel flu symptoms while on 10mg a day. I’ve told my doc about flu like symptoms and he gave me a pain shot. 🤷‍♀️ maybe I should change docs?

I truly don’t know if I have adrenal insufficiency or normal symptoms of withdrawal. I am taking Acthar gel (corticotropin injection) at a very high dose for almost 2 years. Before this I was in prednisone 60 mg for almost 2 years. I am now lowering my corticotropin injection I feel like a bus has passed me through. I am so tired. Have so much body pain and aches. Headaches and fatigue. Feel like I am sick. I don’t know when would be a time to say ok this is worrisome. I am lowering the dose as prescribed by my doctor.

Dr. Megan! I need your advice DESPERATELY- beginning/middle of December, I was put on 40 mg of prednisone for 5 days for bronchitis and then they dropped me to 25 mg for 2 days and then took me off completely. Ever since I’ve been off the Prednisone, I’ve been having THE worst symptoms. Heart palpitations, feeling freezing cold, red face, nausea, excessive thirst, head feeling weird (I can’t really describe it), etc. symptoms seem to be worse in the evening/night time. I’ve been wearing a heart monitor for the past two weeks and I’ve been to my primary care doctor and the ER twice because of this. They first said it was an allergic reaction to prednisone or I was going through prednisone withdrawal but now they don’t think it’s that. They symptoms aren’t as severe or consistent as they were before but the episodes are definitely still happening. Should I see an endocrinologist now since I don’t seem to be getting answers? I’m so frustrated and I’m honestly terrified. Ever since I came off the prednisone I’ve been having these issues. Never once before did I ever go through any of this.

Yes, I definitely think you need to be seen by an endocrinologist. Your cortisol needs to be throrougky tested.

Hey doc! I am taking 30 mg a day and starting next week I will be on 20 then the week after I will be on 10 and then 5. I have had a ton of the side effects such as acne, weight gain, and food cravings. If I have had a lot of the side effects, am I at more risk for withdrawal. I’ve been on prednisone for about 1 1/2 months. And I had viral meningitis in the beginning of February and was in the hospital for a week. Also do you have a social media I can contact you privately about other personal side effects?

There is nothing that can predict withdrawal reliably. Having lots of side effects may mean you get it or may mean you won’t. It isn’t really related.

Sounds like the cure worse than the condition itself. I'm weaning off of this now after about 3 months, and I'm having issues for sure. Depression and anxiety/balance issues. The I was doing 10-20 pushups in a sitting before, now I can only do 6 - 7 top. The muscle weakness if noticeable.

I was on prednisone for 9 days because I broke out with a bad rash I got a side effect I am worried about I got swelling in my calf I don't think it's a DVT but it's painful heard the medicine causes people to hold sodium and water in the body. I would go get checked out but with the coronavirus out there I don't want to go to the ER and might have to stay in the hospital. I am taking it easy and hoping the swelling will go down. If not I will go after the coronavirus peak to get checked out.

I was stuck on prednisone for 2 years to treat a horrible Rheumatoid Arthritis flare. I was finally able to taper off by going down slowly (1mg) prednisone with the help of cod liver oil and full extract cannabis oil to ease the symptoms.

Hi there:) I’ve taken two days of this stuff (60mg) I’m kinda scared and I just wanna stop it. Considering it’s only been two days, can I just stop it? Or is it better to just take half a dose for the next few days and then stop? Thanks for any info you could provide

+Equinox #1 most important thing: never stop taking it without talking to your doctor. IF you talk to your doctor and make this decision together, then it might be okay to just stop it. I only take 5 mg of prednisone I don't remember how much I used to take before. I been on it since I was 4 years old because my kidneys got sick. Right now only take it for 3 days because the doctor told me so and I'm doing my best to get off of it buy eating healthy and exercising because been dealing with yeast infections

So you take it every other day? That's a good strategy. Eating healthy and exercising are some of the best things you can do to combat those long term side effects!

Hi doctor, I need advice please. My dad (73 years old) has been on Prednisone for over 2 months for a condition called Idiopathic Trombocytopenia (ITP). His doctor gave him a taper off plan, which he has followed to the t, but he is having awful withdrawal symptoms now. He took his last Prednisone dosage on Christmas day. Some of his side effects are lightheadedness, shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness, joint pain and headaches. The worst side effect is the lightheadedness. When he gets up from bed or chair, he needs to stand still for a period of time and then he can proceed walking. Is this normal at all? He needs to go back to see his Haematologist on the 9th of Jan. for a check-up. Your input will be highly appreciated. Thank you😊

I have ITP, too! What you described sounds like typical withdrawal syndrome or maybe even adrenal insufficiency. He needs to be seen, and sooner than 1/9/20. He can’t go on like this. It could even be potentially life threatening if this is secondary adrenal insufficiency. My recommendation is to contact his doctor ASAP. He should not still be feeling this way this long after stopping.

Used to be in xanax cuz I was giving it for back pain and panic attacks later when was off it had a seizure

Yes, going "cold turkey" off Xanax can be as bad as going off prednisone cold turkey. It can definitely cause seizures if not slowly withdrawn. I'm sorry you had to go through that!

I was given Prednisone 20mg twice a day for 15 days and when I finished it off I got really bad acne on my face, chest, and back. My stomach feels big and looks a bit big. My face sometimes swells up from the neck and cheeks. I sweat and have hot flashes at night. I also urinate a lot during the night. I have some back muscle pain too. Why is this?

Much of that sounds like prednisone side effects. If this is all new since you stopped prednisone, you should definitely tell your doctor. That sounds miserable!

Hi i was on predislone 30mg for a week from 10june, 20mg for week, 10mg for week then 5mg for week. I had to start again after 50days. 25mg for 2weeks again then 12mg for a week. It was the worst period of life. I had a concussion as well During that period so I wasn't sure what's causing problems. Muscle pain in whole body, sleep disturbance, headaches, mental problems. Im still struggling with fast heartbeat, fatigue nd headaches nd mental issues. Its been nearly 1.5month

+Sohbit Jhand it really is very individual when you recover. Some people it’s within a few weeks, and other is can take up to a year or more. But sometimes you can’t recover on your own and need more support like in adrenal insufficiency.

@@PrednisonePharmacist I have autism and I have all sortsa weird obsessions, including Unix, airplanes, cooking, nutrition, blood sugar anomalies, and the effects of ketogenic diets. Since watching a video about TGN1412 (a drug trial disaster after which multiple grams of corticoid were used to suppress cytokine release syndrome - one of the pts interviewed by Real Stories reports that on waking from his MODS coma he felt "really hungry") I'm fascinated by the effects of supraphysiological corticoid, because it saved 6 now-famous lives in 2006.

@@PrednisonePharmacist I have white stretch marks all over my body, history of severe obesity (stopped counting at 140kg), mood swings, bunch of weird stress symptoms. Right now I'm 90kg at 175cm. I'm 19. My glucose homeostasis is excellent but only by virtue of a strict ketogenic diet, and I have a beer belly par excellence. I am still hair trigger on my stress response. Never taken antiinflammatory steroids in my life. My healing from injuries is good but not perfect. Should I be examined for Cushingism, or for PTSD because I have hair trigger stress? My sleep quality is actually ok which would rule out both.

Seems like advising people with secondary AI to go back on prednisone because of withdrawal symptoms is irresponsible, given that the adrenals can always recover if it's *only* secondary, and given that longterm steroid use has such negative and often irreversible consequences for nearly every system of the body. I would rather suffer through the withdrawal than resign myself to permanently ruining my body and mind.

+Hilary hello! I completely and wholeheartedly agree that every person must decide their own benefit and risk calculation: which for them is the worst and avoiding that. That’s why I make these videos, so people have enough information to make their decision. Withdrawal is such a tricky subject. It’s super tough to diagnose whether it is just withdrawal or whether it is full blown adrenal insufficiency. If it is AI, then it can be extremely life threatening and critical. For some people who “only” have withdrawal, toughing it out is a miserable option that may be preferable as you say than the other side effects. But true AI is not something that can be just toughed out. AI is not just withdrawal and It must be treated with replacement hormones like prednisone or hydrocortisone. Or people can die of adrenal crisis. Check out the article I cited for more scientific support.

@@PrednisonePharmacist Primary AI cannot be overcome, but secondary AI from steroids can be (slowly, carefully) overcome. I just think it's important that people know the difference. If you don't need to be on prednisone anymore and you have secondary AI, tapering will be hell, and you need to do it safely under medical supervision, but your adrenals do recover.

@@simonstones1918 Are you working with an endocrinologist to monitor your adrenal recovery? Again, if it's secondary AI from prednisone they recover. It can take a long time of very slow tapering though, up to two years according to my endocrinologist.

@@plume__ hi Hilary….yes I am working with an endo….not that he does much tho. Just asks me if I’m ok. No guidance really. I’ve tapered off the Pred now but I’ve been feeling rough since I stopped just after Xmas. Really rocky times….
